This article is a clinical guide which discusses the “state-of-the-art” usage of the classic monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) antidepressants (phenelzine, tranylcypromine, and isocarboxazid) in modern psychiatric practice. The guide is for all clinicians, including those who may not be experienced MAOI prescribers. It discusses indications, drug-drug interactions, side-effect management, and the safety of various augmentation strategies. There is a clear and broad consensus (more than 70 international expert endorsers), based on 6 decades of experience, for the recommendations herein exposited. They are based on empirical evidence and expert opinion—this guide is presented as a new specialist-consensus standard. The guide provides practical clinical advice, and is the basis for the rational use of these drugs, particularly because it improves and updates knowledge, and corrects the various misconceptions that have hitherto been prominent in the literature, partly due to insufficient knowledge of pharmacology. The guide suggests that MAOIs should always be considered in cases of treatment-resistant depression (including those melancholic in nature), and prior to electroconvulsive therapy—while taking into account of patient preference. In selected cases, they may be considered earlier in the treatment algorithm than has previously been customary, and should not be regarded as drugs of last resort; they may prove decisively effective when many other treatments have failed. The guide clarifies key points on the concomitant use of incorrectly proscribed drugs such as methylphenidate and some tricyclic antidepressants. It also illustrates the straightforward “bridging” methods that may be used to transition simply and safely from other antidepressants to MAOIs.

Whether monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twins differ from each other in a variety of phenotypes is important for genetic twin modeling and for inferences made from twin studies in general. We analyzed whether there were differences in individual, maternal and paternal education between MZ and DZ twins in a large pooled dataset. Information was gathered on individual education for 218,362 adult twins from 27 twin cohorts (53% females; 39% MZ twins), and on maternal and paternal education for 147,315 and 143,056 twins respectively, from 28 twin cohorts (52% females; 38% MZ twins). Together, we had information on individual or parental education from 42 twin cohorts representing 19 countries. The original education classifications were transformed to education years and analyzed using linear regression models. Overall, MZ males had 0.26 (95% CI [0.21, 0.31]) years and MZ females 0.17 (95% CI [0.12, 0.21]) years longer education than DZ twins. The zygosity difference became smaller in more recent birth cohorts for both males and females. Parental education was somewhat longer for fathers of DZ twins in cohorts born in 1990–1999 (0.16 years, 95% CI [0.08, 0.25]) and 2000 or later (0.11 years, 95% CI [0.00, 0.22]), compared with fathers of MZ twins. The results show that the years of both individual and parental education are largely similar in MZ and DZ twins. We suggest that the socio-economic differences between MZ and DZ twins are so small that inferences based upon genetic modeling of twin data are not affected.

Field experiments were conducted to determine factors that predispose winter wheat to injury by sulfonylurea herbicides. Wheat was injured occasionally when herbicides were applied postemergence in November or when tank mixed with malathion. CGA 131036 at 28 or 56 g ha-1 was less injurious than chlorsulfuron or DPX-G8311 at 26 or 53 g ha-1, and preemergence treatments of chlorsulfuron and DPX-G8311 were less injurious than preplant incorporated or postemergence treatments. Wheat growth stage, minimum post-treatment daily temperature, and summed diurnal temperature fluctuations after treatment and after first post-treatment rainfall were correlated with wheat injury. Grazing and cultivar selection did not affect injury.

A survey conducted to determine the distribution of red horned poppy in western Oklahoma identified infestations in 14 Oklahoma and 3 Texas counties. Soil pH from infested fields ranged from 7.0 to 8.5. Red horned poppy grew as an annual, germinating in fall, spring, or summer. Plants that emerged in the fall survived −25 C, flowered in April and produced mature seed in June. Plants that emerged in April, flowered in June and produced mature seed in July. Corolla color varied from red to yellow with time of anthesis.

Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the tolerance of 79 winter wheat cultivars to cyanazine, BAY SMY 1500, and metribuzin. When known, the pedigree of the more cyanazineand BAY SMY 1500-tolerant hard red winter cultivars included ‘Hope’ and/or ‘Cheyenne’ parentage. However, the cultivars more sensitive to BAY SMY 1500, notably those with ‘Vona’ parentage, were not consistently sensitive to cyanazine. Visible injury on the hard red and soft red winter cultivars did not consistently indicate yield reductions. The soft red winter cultivars, compared to the hard red winter cultivars, were generally more sensitive to cyanazine than BAY SMY 1500.

In North America, terrestrial records of biodiversity and climate change that span Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS) 5 are rare. Where found, they provide insight into how the coupling of the ocean–atmosphere system is manifested in biotic and environmental records and how the biosphere responds to climate change. In 2010–2011, construction at Ziegler Reservoir near Snowmass Village, Colorado (USA) revealed a nearly continuous, lacustrine/wetland sedimentary sequence that preserved evidence of past plant communities between ~140 and 55 ka, including all of MIS 5. At an elevation of 2705 m, the Ziegler Reservoir fossil site also contained thousands of well-preserved bones of late Pleistocene megafauna, including mastodons, mammoths, ground sloths, horses, camels, deer, bison, black bear, coyotes, and bighorn sheep. In addition, the site contained more than 26,000 bones from at least 30 species of small animals including salamanders, otters, muskrats, minks, rabbits, beavers, frogs, lizards, snakes, fish, and birds. The combination of macro- and micro-vertebrates, invertebrates, terrestrial and aquatic plant macrofossils, a detailed pollen record, and a robust, directly dated stratigraphic framework shows that high-elevation ecosystems in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado are climatically sensitive and varied dramatically throughout MIS 5.

Summary
Introduction
Elucidating the mechanisms underlying the formation of structure and form is one of the great challenges in developmental biology. From an initial, seemingly spatially uniform mass of cells, emerge the spectacular patterns that characterise the animal kingdom – butterfly wing patterns, animal coat markings, skeletal structures, skin organs, horns etc. (Figure 9.1). Although genes obviously play a key role, the study of genetics alone does not tell us why certain genes are switched on or off in specific places and how the properties they impart to cells result in the highly coordinated emergence of pattern and form. Modern genomics has revealed remarkable molecular similarity among different animal species. Specifically, biological diversity typically emerges from differences in regulatory DNA rather than detailed protein coding sequences. This implicit universality highlights that many aspects of animal development can be understood from studies of exemplar species such as fruit flies and zebrafish while also motivating theoretical studies to explore and understand the underlying common mechanisms beyond a simply descriptive level.
However, when Alan Turing wrote his seminal paper, ‘The chemical basis of morphogenesis’ (Turing, 1952), such observations were many decades away. At that time biology was following a very traditional classification route of list-making activities. Indeed, there was very little theory regarding development other than D'Arcy Thompson's classic 1917 work (see Thompson, 1992, for the abridged version) exploring how biological forms arose, though even this was still very much at the descriptive rather than the mechanistic level.
Undeterred, Turing started exploring the question of how developmental systems might undertake symmetry-breaking and thus create and amplify structure from seeming uniformity. For example, if one looks at a cross-section of a tree trunk, it has circular symmetry which is broken when a branch starts to grow outwards. Turing proposed an underlying mechanism explaining how asymmetric structure could emerge dynamically, without innate hardwiring. In particular, he described how a symmetric pattern, for instance of a growth hormone, could break up so that more hormone was concentrated on one part of the circle, thus inducing extra growth there.
In order to achieve such behaviour Turing came up with a truly ingenious theory. He considered a system of chemicals reacting with each other and assumed that in the well-mixed case (no spatial heterogeneities) this system exhibited an equilibrium (steady) state which was stable.

A trend toward greater body size in dizygotic (DZ) than in monozygotic (MZ) twins has been suggested by some but not all studies, and this difference may also vary by age. We analyzed zygosity differences in mean values and variances of height and body mass index (BMI) among male and female twins from infancy to old age. Data were derived from an international database of 54 twin cohorts participating in the COllaborative project of Development of Anthropometrical measures in Twins (CODATwins), and included 842,951 height and BMI measurements from twins aged 1 to 102 years. The results showed that DZ twins were consistently taller than MZ twins, with differences of up to 2.0 cm in childhood and adolescence and up to 0.9 cm in adulthood. Similarly, a greater mean BMI of up to 0.3 kg/m2 in childhood and adolescence and up to 0.2 kg/m2 in adulthood was observed in DZ twins, although the pattern was less consistent. DZ twins presented up to 1.7% greater height and 1.9% greater BMI than MZ twins; these percentage differences were largest in middle and late childhood and decreased with age in both sexes. The variance of height was similar in MZ and DZ twins at most ages. In contrast, the variance of BMI was significantly higher in DZ than in MZ twins, particularly in childhood. In conclusion, DZ twins were generally taller and had greater BMI than MZ twins, but the differences decreased with age in both sexes.

For over 100 years, the genetics of human anthropometric traits has attracted scientific interest. In particular, height and body mass index (BMI, calculated as kg/m2) have been under intensive genetic research. However, it is still largely unknown whether and how heritability estimates vary between human populations. Opportunities to address this question have increased recently because of the establishment of many new twin cohorts and the increasing accumulation of data in established twin cohorts. We started a new research project to analyze systematically (1) the variation of heritability estimates of height, BMI and their trajectories over the life course between birth cohorts, ethnicities and countries, and (2) to study the effects of birth-related factors, education and smoking on these anthropometric traits and whether these effects vary between twin cohorts. We identified 67 twin projects, including both monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twins, using various sources. We asked for individual level data on height and weight including repeated measurements, birth related traits, background variables, education and smoking. By the end of 2014, 48 projects participated. Together, we have 893,458 height and weight measures (52% females) from 434,723 twin individuals, including 201,192 complete twin pairs (40% monozygotic, 40% same-sex dizygotic and 20% opposite-sex dizygotic) representing 22 countries. This project demonstrates that large-scale international twin studies are feasible and can promote the use of existing data for novel research purposes.

Summary
Eye muscle surgery is performed to correct strabismus, which is any horizontal, vertical, or torsional misalignment of the eyes that affects both children and adults. The disease can be congenital, acquired, restrictive, or paralytic. The purpose of surgery is to restore the eyes to their normal, anatomical position; to maximize the potential for binocularity; and, in some cases, to eliminate diplopia. Either one or multiple muscles may be involved in the operation and bilateral procedures are common. In cooperative children and adults, a postoperative adjustment of the muscle position may be performed once the effects of anesthesia have dissipated.
Strabismus surgery is most often performed under general anesthesia, though local anesthesia and even topical anesthesia can be used in adults.
Usual postoperative course
Expected postoperative hospital stay
Most strabismus surgery is performed on an outpatient basis. Hospitalization is unusual.
Operative mortality
Related to anesthesia. The incidence of malignant hyperthermia may be slightly higher in strabismus patients than in the general population.
Special monitoring required
None necessary.
Patient activity and positioning
For 2 weeks, patients are advised to avoid swimming and other activities that may introduce contaminated material into their eyes. Young children should be properly supervised and discouraged from rubbing their eyes. Dressings are usually unnecessary.
Alimentation
Oral intake should be resumed gradually, since nausea and vomiting are common after strabismus surgery, especially in children.
Antibiotic coverage
Topical antibiotic or antibiotic/steroid combination drops may be used optionally.

Heteroepitaxial films of aluminum bicrystals grown on silicon provide a model system in which to study plasticity in polycrystalline metal thin films. For the bicrystal films, dislocations are confined to move on two different slip plane orientations because of the orientation of the crystals on the substrate. In-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations during thermal cycling have shown two threshold temperatures for dislocation motion on cooling. A simple model uses the resolved shear stress on the possible slip planes to explain the TEM observations. Mechanisms responsible for the dislocation behavior are studied in-situ during thermal cycling between room temperature and 450°C with x-ray diffraction. The strains are determined using a sin2(Ψ) analysis at each temperature. Direct comparisons are made between the TEM observations, the model and x-ray diffraction results.

The profitable management of milk production in relation to quota would be greatly aided by an ability to predict responses in milk constituent output to changes in feeding. One pre-requisite for doing so is a knowledge of substitution rates between feeds. The trials described here were the first in a series to aid the development of a mathematical model embracing the inter-relationships between forage quality and type, concentrate level and type, and milk outputs. The objective was to explore further the impact of silage type and quality and a wide range of concentrate level on substitution rate and milk constituent output.
