Although it is clear that i-frame approaches cannot stand alone, the impact of s-frame changes can plateau. Combinations of these approaches may best reflect what we know about behavior and how to support behavioral change. Interactions between i-frame and s-frame thinking are explored here using two examples: alcohol consumption and meat consumption.

In 2010, we proposed a personal factor classification which was published in this journal. Since then, the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the biopsychosocial model were increasingly incorporated into the German Social Law Code for participation and rehabilitation, implying that personal factors are indispensable for individual assessments. For the present study, we aimed to come up with an updated version of the personal factors classification based on current research. To achieve this goal, we employed a qualitative approach to re-examine the basic structure, consistency, and selection of categories in the classification from our 2010 study, to amend and supplement the categories to reflect best practice personal factor classifications. Our findings indicate that the basic structure remained largely unchanged, with relatively minor changes, including the deletion of 5 categories from our 2010 classification, 10 categories revised in format or content, and 13 new categories. We believe our revised classification to be useful for supporting users in systematically, comprehensively, and transparently reporting influences on specific aspects of individuals’ life and living background on their functioning and participation, thus facilitating an equitable allocation of disability benefits.

Tomography produces complex volumetric datasets containing the entire internal structure and density of an object in three dimensions (3D). Interpreting volumetric data requires 3D visualization but needs specialized software distinguishable from more familiar tools used in animation for 3D surface data. This tutorial reviews 3D visualization techniques for volumetric data using the open-source tomviz software package. A suite of tools including two-dimensional (2D) slices, surface contours, and full volume rendering provide quantitative and qualitative analysis of volumetric information. The principles outlined here are applicable to a wide range of 3D tomography techniques and can be applied to volumetric datasets beyond materials characterization.

Conservation of the high seas marine environment poses a significant challenge to policy-makers and managers. Marine conservation efforts are often hindered by the lack of data and the difficulties in addressing multiple, and typically conflicting uses. The majority of extant Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are in coastal or tropical regions within national jurisdiction. Conservation of high seas MPAs has emerged on the international agenda as a critical issue requiring the application of novel approaches, international cooperation and political will. Knowledge and understanding of the marine environment and data on marine biodiversity are all typically limited for the high seas, and the use of surrogates to assist in the identification of areas of high conservation value is one possible mechanism to address and potentially overcome these limitations. Drawing upon a database spanning more than 20 years and containing approximately 140 000 records of seabird sightings at sea, this study assesses the potential use of seabirds as surrogates for marine biodiversity in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean. At-sea ranges, species diversity and the distributions of endangered species may be appropriate selectors or filters to identify areas with high conservation values. Integrating policy with science provides an appropriate mechanism to identify and prioritise MPAs in the Southern Ocean.

Self-assembled monolayers of fluorinated thiols have been used as a means of surface conditioning to modify the work function of polycrystalline, wide-gap, chalcopyrite thin films. The molecular dipole, characteristic of such polar molecules, could be transferred to the surface of the semiconductor. Self-arrangement and orientation of the molecules upon adsorption ensured a net dipole contribution that was observed by means of ultra-violet photoemission spectroscopy. Such an approach offers a simple way for interface engineering, with a potential impact on the design of compound-specific band alignments of chalcopyrite-based devices. Molecular mechanics calculations of the expected molecular geometries complemented this work.

The speed of travelling azimuthal waves on Taylor vortices in a circular Couette system (with the inner cylinder rotating and the outer cylinder at rest) has been determined in laboratory experiments conducted as a function of Reynolds number R, radius ratio of the cylinders η, average axial wavelength $\overline{\lambda}$, number of waves m1 and the aspect ratio Γ (the ratio of the fluid height to the gap between the cylinders). Wave speeds have also been determined numerically for axially periodic flows in infinite-length cylinders by solving the Navier-Stokes equation with a pseudospectral technique where each Taylor-vortex pair is represented with 32 axial modes, 32 azimuthal modes (in an azimuthal angle of 2π/m1) and 33 radial modes. Above the onset of wavy-vortex flow the wave speed for a given η decreases with increasing R until it reaches a plateau that persists for some range in R. In the radius-ratio range examined in our experiments we find that the wave speed in the plateau region increases monotonically from 0.14Ω at η = 0.630 to 0.45Ω at η = 0.950 (where the wave speed is expressed in terms of the rotation frequency Ω of the inner cylinder). There is a much weaker dependence of the wave speed on $\overline{\lambda}$, m1 and Γ. For three sets of parameter values (R, $\overline{\lambda}$, η and m1) the wave speeds have been measured, extrapolated to infinite aspect ratio, and compared with the numerically computed values. For each of these three cases the agreement is within 0.1 %.

Controlled defects were created on DNA linked 2-D colloidal photonic crystals using a Nd:YAG pulsed laser. The 2-D photonic crystals were self-assembled using 1.8 μm polystyrene (PS) microspheres on functionalized glass substrates. To synthesize the hexagonal close packed crystalline samples, both substrate and particles attached single-strand DNA, sequence A on the substrate and sequence B on the particles. The DNA was hybridized using the DNA linker with complementary single-strand A’B’ that anchored the particles to the substrate during self-assembly. The 532 nm second harmonic wavelength beam of the pulsed Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) with a pulse width of 10 ns was used for the removal of individual colloidal particles from the self assembled photonic crystals. In the present tests, the diameter of the laser beam was optically reduced from 7 mm to about 1.8 μm. Controlled line defects and geometrical shapes (e.g., hexagonal and triangle) were created in the 2D arrays in an aqueous medium.
Investigation on Morphology and Microstructure of the SALD SiC

In this work, the deposition of silicon carbide lines using a tetramethylsilane (TMS) precursor was investigated. Effects of target temperatures on the morphology and crystal structure of the deposits were examined. It was found that the morphology of the SALD SiC depends strongly on the target temperature. The contour of the cross section of the SiC deposits changes from a triangle to trapezoid to volcano shape and the surface morphology of the deposited lines changes from smooth to rough to porous as the target temperature increases. A critical target temperature was found to be about 700°C to initiate deposition of SiC under the current experimental configurations. X-ray diffraction analyses show that the SALD SiC formed at 1000°C contains both crystalline and amorphous phases. The results are briefly discussed.

In this paper, the Selective Area Laser Deposition (SALD) technique was used to deposit silicon nitride material from the gas phase. Tetramethylsilane (TMS) and ammonia were chosen as precursors for silicon and nitrogen respectively. Effects of processing temperatures and gas ratios of TMS to total pressure (PTMS + PNH3) on the relative amounts of silicon nitride and the growth kinetics were studied. Further, surface morphology and electrical properties of the deposits were also examined. It is found that the as-deposited materials are mainly composed of amorphous phases and the heat-treated samples (at 1500°C for 8hrs) consist of α-Si 3N4, α-SiC and β-SiC. The amount of αz-Si3N4 decreases with the increase of the TMS pressure. The volume growth rate of deposits also increases with the TMS pressure. The apparent activation energy for these processes is estimated as 1 OOkJ/mol.
X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy from H-Passivated Porous Si and Oxidized Si Nanocrystals

Quantum confinement in nanoscale Si structures is widely believed to be responsible for the visible luminescence observed from anodically etched porous silicon (por-Si), but little is known about the actual size or shape of these structures. Extended x-ray absorption fine structure data from a wide variety of por-Si samples show significantly reduced average Si coordination numbers due to the sizable contribution of surface-coordinated H. (The H/Si ratios, as large as 1.2, were independently confirmed by ir-absorption and α-recoil measurements.) The Si coordinations imply very large surface/volume ratios, enabling the average Si structures to be identified as crystalline particles (not wires) whose dimensions are typically <15 Å. Comparison of the size-dependent peak luminescence energies with those of oxidized Si nanocrystals, whose shapes are known, shows remarkable agreement. Furthermore, near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure measurements of the nanocrystals shows the outer oxide and interfacial suboxide layers to be constant over a wide range of nanocrystal sizes. The combination of these results effectively rules out surface species as being responsible for the observed visible luminescence in por-Si, and strongly supports quantum confinement as the dominant mechanism occurring in Si particles which are substantially smaller than previously reported or proposed.
