Palaeoenvironmental data indicate that the climate of south-western Madagascar has changed repeatedly over the past millennium. Combined with socio-political challenges such as warfare and slave raiding, communities continually had to mitigate against risk. Here, the authors apply social network analysis to pottery assemblages from sites on the Velondriake coast to identify intercommunity connectivity and changes over time. The results indicate both continuity of densely connected networks and change in their spatial extent and structure. These network shifts coincided with periods of socio-political and environmental perturbation attested in palaeoclimate data and oral histories. Communities responded to socio-political and environmental risk by reconfiguring social connections and migrating to areas of greater resource availability or political security.

Alterations of the gut microbiome have been associated with obesity and metabolic disorders. The gut microbiota can be influenced by the intake of dietary fibres with prebiotic properties, such as inulin-type fructans. The present study tested the hypothesis that obese individuals subjected for 12 weeks to an inulin-enriched v. inulin-poor diet have differential faecal fermentation patterns. The fermentation of cellulose and inulin hydrolysates of six different inulin-rich and inulin-poor vegetables of both groups was analysed in vitro on faecal inocula. The results showed that the microbiota from obese patients who received a fructan-rich diet for 3 weeks produces more gas and total SCFA compared with the microbiota taken from the same individuals before the treatment. Obese individuals fed with a low-fructan diet produce less gas and less SCFA compared with the treated group. The present study highlighted profound changes in microbiota fermentation capacity obtained by prebiotic intervention in obese individuals, which favours the production of specific bioactive metabolites.

The illegal killing and taking of wild birds remains a major threat on a global scale. However, there are few quantitative data on the species affected and countries involved. We quantified the scale and scope of this issue in Northern and Central Europe and the Caucasus, using a diverse range of data sources and incorporating expert knowledge. The issue was reported to be widespread across the region and affects almost all countries/territories assessed. We estimated that 0.4–2.1 million birds per year may be killed/taken illegally in the region. The highest estimate of illegal killing in the region was for Azerbaijan (0.2-1.0 million birds per year). Out of the 20 worst locations identified, 13 were located in the Caucasus. Birds were reported to be illegally killed/taken primarily for sport and food in the Caucasus and for sport and predator/pest control in both Northern and Central Europe. All of the 28 countries assessed are parties to the Bern Convention and 19 are also European Union Member States. There are specific initiatives under both these policy instruments to tackle this threat, yet our data showed that illegal killing and taking is still occurring and is not restricted to Mediterranean European countries. Markedly increased effort is required to ensure that existing legislation is adequately implemented and complied with/enforced on the ground. Our study also highlighted the paucity of data on illegal killing and taking of birds in the region. It is a priority, identified by relevant initiatives under the Bern Convention and the European Union, to implement systematic monitoring of illegal killing and taking and to collate robust data, allowing stakeholders to set priorities, track trends and monitor the effectiveness of responses.

Reunion Island in the south-west Indian Ocean once had significant nesting populations of marine turtles but they declined rapidly after human colonization. In 1996, after regular sightings of turtles offshore, an aerial survey programme was initiated to monitor the occurrence of marine turtles and their distribution along the west coast of the island. Between 1998 and 2008, along a 30-km coastline transect between Saint Leu and Saint Paul, a total of 1,845 marine turtle sightings were recorded during 146 flights with an ultralight aircraft. The mean number of turtle sightings per survey increased significantly between 1998 and 2008, and a variety of sizes were recorded throughout the year. Marine turtles were found over coral reef zones and on the outer reef slopes. Spatial distribution may be linked to the topography and substrate of the bottom, which determine the availability of food and shelter. The marine protected area located off Saint Paul seems to have benefited marine turtles as they frequent this area more than other regions on the west coast. These results are encouraging for local organizations working for the conservation of marine turtles on Reunion Island.

The study's purpose was to estimate the potential economic benefit of the optimization of postanesthesia care units (PACUs). A simulation model was designed and used to test the economic impact of a reduction of length of stay. For the studied PACU, a reduction of 25% of length of stay is required to yield significant economic results.

Among several alternative viewpoints for building software quality metrics, evaluating the consistency between different models in a software specification or implementation appears to be fruitful. An obvious difficulty is that different models are usually expressed by means of different concepts, and then, confronting heterogeneous representations is not straightforward. In this paper, we propose a solution for measuring the consistency between the architecture and the communication models. After some sensible transformations, the information about both models are captured trough hierarchical representations. We define and discuss a similarity measure between hierarchies, that eventually founds the software metric we propose. Lastly, we investigate how to scale and interpret the metric values and give an application example with SDL.

Early mortality and pup growth during the perinatal period were investigated in pups of the subantarctic fur seal Arctocephalus tropicalis on Amsterdam Island. Mothers that were shorter in body length and expected to be younger, gave birth earlier in the pupping season, compared with longer/older mothers. Pups born early were often still-born, suggesting that shorter/younger mothers that gave birth early in the season were not able to carry their foetuses to term. Pregnant females arrived ashore 1.4 days before giving birth, regardless of the date and their body condition. There was a positive relationship between maternal body length and pup birth mass. Consistently, birth mass increased throughout the pupping period. After parturition, mothers suckled their pups during an average 8.7-day postnatal period that was significantly shorter in mothers giving birth late in the season. However, the absolute gain in pup mass was 1.5 kg regardless of the birth date, suggesting that mothers did not leave their pups before they had transferred a given amount of body reserves to them. We propose that pups born late grew faster because they were bigger at birth and because their mothers were likely to be more experienced. Mothers in good condition, nursing male pups transferred more milk and therefore greater mass to their pup, whereas mothers in poor condition were unable to do so. Such differences did not occur in smaller female pups, suggesting that pup growth was limited by maternal resources in male pups but not in female pups. The lack of a relationship between birth mass and absolute gain during the perinatal period suggests that mass at birth determined pup body mass after the perinatal period. Two brown algae, Pelvetia canaliculata and Laminaria saccharina, from the higher and lower mediolittoral belts respectively, have been tested for their capacity to overcome high-light stress in water and in air (in both fully hydrated and desiccated states). When exposed to supersaturating light irradiance in water, the two species developed non-photochemical quenching of fluorescence (NPQ) which was correlated with an increase in the de-epoxidation ratio (DR) of the xanthophyll cycle carotenoids (violaxanthin, antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin) and was followed by a slower decrease in oxygen evolution. NPQ reached values of up to 9 in P. canaliculata but only 4·5 in L. saccharina, at DRs of 0·65 and 0·5, respectively. In air, the xanthophyll cycle was also operative but the efficiency of de-epoxidation decreased linearly with the degree of hydration of the thallus. Photoprotection capacities in air also appeared higher in P. canaliculata than in L. saccharina, probably due to the higher molar content of the xanthophyll cycle pool size relative to chlorophyll a (Chl a) in the former (nearly double of that L. saccharina at 19 carotenoid molecules per 100 Chl a), which may be associated with a higher DR at the same level of desiccation. The concomitant higher accumulation of zeaxanthin in P. canaliculata might divert a higher percentage of the incident energy from the reaction centres, as demonstrated by the levels of NPQ, with steady-state fluorescence reduced to below the initial F0 level. Such differences, together with the unequal resistance to desiccation of the operation of the xanthophyll cycle, should be considered as possible factors responsible for the distribution for these two species on the shore.
