Headache in ADHD as comorbidity and a side effect of medications: a systematic review and meta-analysis

There is mixed evidence on the association between headache and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), as well as headache and ADHD medications. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the co-occurrence of headache in children with ADHD, and the effects of ADHD medications on headache. Embase, Medline and PsycInfo were searched for population-based and clinical studies comparing the prevalence of headache in ADHD and controls through January 26, 2021. In addition, we updated the search of a previous systematic review and network meta-analysis of double-blind randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on ADHD medications on June 16, 2020. Trials of amphetamines, atomoxetine, bupropion, clonidine, guanfacine, methylphenidate, and modafinil with a placebo arm and reporting data on headache as an adverse event, were included. Thirteen epidemiological studies and 58 clinical trials were eligible for inclusion. In epidemiological studies, a significant association between headache and ADHD was found [odds ratio (OR) = 2.01, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.63–2.46], which remained significant when limited to studies reporting ORs adjusted for possible confounders. The pooled prevalence of headaches in children with ADHD was 26.6%. In RCTs, three ADHD medications were associated with increased headache during treatment periods, compared to placebo: atomoxetine (OR = 1.29, 95% CI = 1.06–1.56), guanfacine (OR = 1.43, 95% CI = 1.12–1.82), and methylphenidate (OR = 1.33, 95% CI = 1.09–1.63). The summarized evidence suggests that headache is common in children with ADHD, both as part of the clinical presentation as such and as a side effect of some standard medications. Monitoring and clinical management strategies of headache in ADHD, in general, and during pharmacological treatment are recommended.

Background
Studying phenotypic and genetic characteristics of age at onset (AAO) and polarity at onset (PAO) in bipolar disorder can provide new insights into disease pathology and facilitate the development of screening tools.
AimsTo examine the genetic architecture of AAO and PAO and their association with bipolar disorder disease characteristics.
MethodGenome-wide association studies (GWASs) and polygenic score (PGS) analyses of AAO (n = 12 977) and PAO (n = 6773) were conducted in patients with bipolar disorder from 34 cohorts and a replication sample (n = 2237). The association of onset with disease characteristics was investigated in two of these cohorts.
ResultsEarlier AAO was associated with a higher probability of psychotic symptoms, suicidality, lower educational attainment, not living together and fewer episodes. Depressive onset correlated with suicidality and manic onset correlated with delusions and manic episodes. Systematic differences in AAO between cohorts and continents of origin were observed. This was also reflected in single-nucleotide variant-based heritability estimates, with higher heritabilities for stricter onset definitions. Increased PGS for autism spectrum disorder (β = −0.34 years, s.e. = 0.08), major depression (β = −0.34 years, s.e. = 0.08), schizophrenia (β = −0.39 years, s.e. = 0.08), and educational attainment (β = −0.31 years, s.e. = 0.08) were associated with an earlier AAO. The AAO GWAS identified one significant locus, but this finding did not replicate. Neither GWAS nor PGS analyses yielded significant associations with PAO.
ConclusionsAAO and PAO are associated with indicators of bipolar disorder severity. Individuals with an earlier onset show an increased polygenic liability for a broad spectrum of psychiatric traits. Systematic differences in AAO across cohorts, continents and phenotype definitions introduce significant heterogeneity, affecting analyses.

Aim:
To investigate associations between schizophrenia candidate gene polymorphisms and regional cortical thickness and volume in patients with schizophrenia and healthy control subjects.
Methods:Genotyping was performed using PCR and pyrosequencing techniques. Cortical morphology was analyzed by processing magnetic resonance brain images with the FreeSurfer software package. General linear model analysis was used to study associations between gene variants and cortical thickness in patients and controls, respectively. Regional cortical volumes were defined from automatic cortical parcellations. Our first studies from 96 patients with schizophrenia and 104 healthy control subjects demonstrate that polymorphisms in the brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene may be associated with variation in frontal lobe morphology. Associations seem to be stronger in patients with schizophrenia than in healthy controls.

Surface strain rates around the southeastern dome of Hans Tausen Iskappe in Peary Land, North Greenland (82.5° N, 27.5° W), are determined from global positioning system surveys of a strain net. Average longitudinal surface strain rate increases towards the dome, from (1.4 ± 0.2) × 10−4 a−1 at 5–10 ice thicknesses from the divide to (2.4 ± 1.0) × 10−4 a−1 within 1 ice thickness from the divide. Analysis of the data shows that the ice cap is presently building up within the strain net with an average rate of 〈∂H/∂t〉 = + 0.04 ± 0.02 m a−1. Assuming a uniform thickening, the shape factor of the horizontal velocity (the ratio between the vertically averaged horizontal velocity and the horizontal surface velocity) decreases towards the dome, from 0.9 at a distance of 10 ice thicknesses from the dome to 0.5 at the dome based on application of the continuity equation. Our results indicate that a region with anomalous flow is formed around the dome, supporting recent indications reported by Vaughan and others (1999). It is not possible from our data to constrain parameters of the flow law, because there is no independent estimate of the significant present thickening of the central part of the ice cap and its pattern around the dome.

Background
Our understanding of the complex relationship between schizophrenia symptomatology and etiological factors can be improved by studying brain-based correlates of schizophrenia. Research showed that impairments in value processing and executive functioning, which have been associated with prefrontal brain areas [particularly the medial orbitofrontal cortex (MOFC)], are linked to negative symptoms. Here we tested the hypothesis that MOFC thickness is associated with negative symptom severity.
MethodsThis study included 1985 individuals with schizophrenia from 17 research groups around the world contributing to the ENIGMA Schizophrenia Working Group. Cortical thickness values were obtained from T1-weighted structural brain scans using FreeSurfer. A meta-analysis across sites was conducted over effect sizes from a model predicting cortical thickness by negative symptom score (harmonized Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms or Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale scores).
ResultsMeta-analytical results showed that left, but not right, MOFC thickness was significantly associated with negative symptom severity (βstd = −0.075; p = 0.019) after accounting for age, gender, and site. This effect remained significant (p = 0.036) in a model including overall illness severity. Covarying for duration of illness, age of onset, antipsychotic medication or handedness weakened the association of negative symptoms with left MOFC thickness. As part of a secondary analysis including 10 other prefrontal regions further associations in the left lateral orbitofrontal gyrus and pars opercularis emerged.
ConclusionsUsing an unusually large cohort and a meta-analytical approach, our findings point towards a link between prefrontal thinning and negative symptom severity in schizophrenia. This finding provides further insight into the relationship between structural brain abnormalities and negative symptoms in schizophrenia.
1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy evidence for occipital involvement in treatment-naive paediatric obsessive–compulsive disorder

Objective
Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic psychiatric disorder leading to considerable distress and disability. Therapies are effective in a majority of paediatric patients, however, many only get partial response. It is therefore important to study the underlying pathophysiology of the disorder.
Methods1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) was used to study the concentration of brain metabolites in four different locations (cingulate gyrus and sulcus, occipital cortex, thalamus and right caudate nucleus). Treatment-naive children and adolescents with OCD (13 subjects) were compared with a group of healthy age- and gender-matched subjects (11 subjects). Multivariate analyses were performed on the concentration values.
ResultsNo separation between controls and patients was found. However, a correlation between metabolite concentrations and symptom severity as measured with the Children’s Yale-Brown Obsessive–Compulsive Scale (CY-BOCS) was found. Strongest was the correlation with the CY-BOCS obsession subscore and aspartate and choline in the caudate nucleus (positively correlated with obsessions), lipids at 2 and 0.9 ppm in thalamus, and occipital glutamate+glutamine, N-acetylaspartate and myo-inosytol (negatively correlated with obsessions).
ConclusionsThe observed correlations between 1H MRS and CY-BOCS in treatment-naive patients further supports an occipital involvement in OCD. The results are consistent with our previous study on adult OCD patients. The 1H MRS data were not supportive of a separation between the patient and control groups.
Cerebrospinal fluid kynurenic acid in male patients with schizophrenia – correlation with monoamine metabolites

Background:
The tryptophan metabolite kynurenic acid (KYNA) is an endogenous glutamate/nicotinic receptor antagonist. Previous studies have shown that the concentration of the compound is increased in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with schizophrenia. Furthermore, it has been found that the CSF concentration of KYNA is positively correlated to CSF concentrations of the monoamine metabolites homovanillic acid (HVA) and 5-hydroxy indoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in healthy control subjects.
Objectives:To study the correlations between KYNA and the monoamine metabolites HVA, 5-HIAA and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylglycol (HMPG) in CSF of male patients (n= 53, ranging from 20 to 48 years of age) with verified schizophrenia.
Methods:CSF was obtained by lumbar puncture, and KYNA analysis was performed with an isocratic reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography system connected to a fluorescence detector. HVA, 5-HIAA and HMPG concentrations were measured by mass fragmentography with deuterium-labelled internal standards.
Results:Positive intercorrelations were found between CSF KYNA, HVA and 5-HIAA, while CSF content of HMPG did not correlate to KYNA or any of the monoamine metabolites in CSF.
Conclusion:The results of this study suggest that increased KYNA formation is associated with an increased dopamine and serotonin turnover in male patients with schizophrenia.

Planning research in Artificial Intelligence (AI) has often focused on problems where there are cascading levels of action choice and complex interactions between actions. In contrast, scheduling research has focused on much larger problems where there is little action choice, but the resulting ordering problem is hard. In this paper, we give an overview of AI planning and scheduling techniques, focusing on their similarities, differences, and limitations. We also argue that many difficult practical problems lie somewhere between planning and scheduling, and that neither area has the right set of tools for solving these vexing problems.
Cortical folding in Broca's area relates to obstetric complications in schizophrenia patients and healthy controls

Background
The increased occurrence of obstetric complications (OCs) in patients with schizophrenia suggests that alterations in neurodevelopment may be of importance to the aetiology of the illness. Abnormal cortical folding may reflect subtle deviation from normal neurodevelopment during the foetal or neonatal period. In the present study, we hypothesized that OCs would be related to cortical folding abnormalities in schizophrenia patients corresponding to areas where patients with schizophrenia display altered cortical folding when compared with healthy controls.
MethodIn total, 54 schizophrenia patients and 54 healthy control subjects underwent clinical examination and magnetic resonance image scanning on a 1.5 T scanner. Information on OCs was collected from original birth records. An automated algorithm was used to calculate a three-dimensional local gyrification index (lGI) at numerous points across the cortical mantle.
ResultsIn both schizophrenia patients and healthy controls, an increasing number of OCs was significantly related to lower lGI in the left pars triangularis (p<0.0005) in Broca's area. For five other anatomical cortical parcellations in the left hemisphere, a similar trend was demonstrated. No significant relationships between OCs and lGI were found in the right hemisphere and there were no significant case–control differences in lGI.
ConclusionsThe reduced cortical folding in the left pars triangularis, associated with OCs in both patients and control subjects suggests that the cortical effect of OCs is caused by factors shared by schizophrenia patients and healthy controls rather than factors related to schizophrenia alone.

This study was performed to investigate space–time patterns of Campylobacter spp. colonization in broiler flocks in Norway. Data on the Campylobacter spp. status at the time of slaughter of 16 054 broiler flocks from 580 farms between 2002 and 2006 was included in the study. Spatial relative risk maps together with maps of space–time clustering were generated, the latter by using spatial scan statistics. These maps identified the same areas almost every year where there was a higher risk for a broiler flock to test positive for Campylobacter spp. during the summer months. A modified K-function analysis showed significant clustering at distances between 2·5 and 4 km within different years. The identification of geographical areas with higher risk for Campylobacter spp. colonization in broilers indicates that there are risk factors associated with Campylobacter spp. colonization in broiler flocks varying with region and time, e.g. climate, landscape or geography. These need to be further explored. The results also showed clustering at shorter distances indicating that there are risk factors for Campylobacter spp. acting in a more narrow scale as well.

Summary
Growth and survival of photosynthetic carbon autotrophs, such as lichens, are primarily limited by their photosynthetic carbon assimilation minus carbon dioxide (CO2) losses related to growth and maintenance respiration. The absolute, as well as the relative, rates of these two processes will hence determine their capacity to grow. In lichens, both photosynthesis (P) and respiration (R) are strongly constrained by prevailing environmental conditions, particularly water and light. There is also a variation in inherent P and R capacities among species and individuals. Significant progress has been made during the last two decades in understanding how such variations in external conditions and internal capacities affect lichen growth (Boucher and Nash 1990a; Muir et al. 1997; Sundberg et al. 1997, 2001; Hyvärinen and Crittenden 1998b; Palmqvist and Sundberg 2000; Hilmo and Holien 2002; Dahlman and Palmqvist 2003; Hyvärinen et al. 2003; Gaio-Oliveira et al. 2004a, 2006; Gauslaa 2006; Gauslaa et al. 2006b; Palmqvist and Dahlman 2006), including re-establishment of vegetative propagules (Hilmo and Sastad 2001; Hilmo and Ott 2002). This progress has been driven by the development of transplantation techniques in combination with more mechanistically oriented studies, knowledge that has further been used to formulate both conceptual (Palmqvist 2000) and more mechanistically oriented models (Link et al. 1985; Palmqvist and Sundberg 2000; Dahlman and Palmqvist 2003). Such models are useful for the direction of future research towards more explicit hypothesis testing, and could also be adopted to predict how environmental changes may affect particular lichen species, or compare species' abilities to utilize and acclimate to varying environmental conditions.

The investigation to be described here is a wide-ranging experimental study aimed at determining both the details of the flow field and the pressure drop and friction factor characteristics for turbulent flow in eccentric annular ducts. The experiments were performed utilizing three annular ducts of different diameter ratios; in each case the eccentricity was varied from zero (concentric annulus) to unity (walls in contact). To provide the broadest possible perspective, the measurements of the velocity field are presented in three different ways. First, contour maps showing lines of constant velocity are constructed. From these are deduced circumferential distributions of the local shear stress on the bounding walls. Velocity profiles along lines normal to the walls are represented in terms of both law-of-the-wall variables and defect-law variables. Neither of these representations affords complete agreement with the universal circular-tube distributions. In general, the defect law provides a somewhat closer correlation of the results for the eccentric annulus with those for the tube. The experimental findings do not substantiate a prior analytical model which assumes that the universal law of the wall applies on all lines normal to the bounding walls of the annulus. Friction factors, based on static pressure measurements, are shown to decrease with increasing eccentricity. The measured friction factors are in fair agreement with those of analysis. Hydrodynamic development lengths, deduced from entrance-region pressure data, are found to increase with increasing eccentricity. Circumferential pressure variations also increase with eccentricity.

An investigation is carried out to determine the conditions marking the onset of convective motion in a horizontal fluid layer in which a negative temperature gradient occurs somewhere within the layer. In such cases, fluid of greater density is situated above fluid of lesser density. Consideration is given to a variety of thermal and hydrodynamic boundary conditions at the surfaces which bound the fluid layer. The thermal conditions include fixed temperature and fixed heat flux at the lower bounding surface, and a general convective-radiative exchange at the upper surface which includes fixed temperature and fixed heat flux as special cases. The hydrodynamic boundary conditions include both rigid and free upper surfaces with a rigid lower bounding surface. It is found that the Rayleigh number marking the onset of motion is greatest for the boundary condition of fixed temperature and decreases monotonically as the condition of fixed heat flux is approached. Non-linear temperature distributions in the fluid layer may result from internal heat generation. With increasing departures from the linear temperature profile, it is found that the fluid layer becomes more prone to instability, that is, the critical Rayleigh number decreases.

An analytical investigation is carried out to determine the conditions for instability in a viscous fluid contained between rotating coaxial cylinders of arbitrary radius ratio. A solution method is outlined and then applied to cylinders having radius ratios ranging from 0·95 to 0·1. Consideration is given to both cases wherein the cylinders are rotating in the same direction and in opposite directions. Results are reported for the Taylor numbers and wave-numbers which mark the onset of instability. The present results are also employed to delineate the range of applicability of the closed-form instability predictions of Taylor and of Meksyn, which were derived for narrow-gap conditions.
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study of the metal/polymer contacts involving aluminum and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonic acid) derivatives

The contact formed between aluminum and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonic acid) (PEDOT-PSS) derivatives was studied using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The aluminum/PEDOT-PSS contact contains an interfacial layer formed by chemical reactions between aluminum and mainly poly(styrenesulfonic acid) (PSSH). These chemical interactions were studied with the help of model systems (PSSH, benzenesulfonic acid, and sodium benzenesulfonate). The preferred reaction site of aluminum is the SO3− and SO3−H+ groups of the PSS chains, giving rise to C-S-Al(-O) and C-O-Al species. The resulting contact formed consists of an insulating aluminum/PSS layer and a thin region of partially dedoped PEDOT-PSS. There is significant aluminum diffusion into films of the highly conducting form of PEDOT-PSS that have substantially less PSS at the surface. Hence, no (thick) aluminum/PSS layer is formed in this case, though the PEDOT chains close to the aluminum contact will still be partially dedoped as for the aluminum/PEDOT-PSS case.
Kinetics of subsurface hydrogen adsorbed on niobium: Thermal desorption studies

The adsorption/absorption of hydrogen and the adsorption of carbon monoxide by niobium foils, at room temperature, was studied using thermal desorption spectroscopy. Two hydrogen desorption peaks were observed with a maximum at 404 and 471 K. The first hydrogen desorption peak is regarded as hydrogen desorbing from surface sites while the second peak, which represents desorption from surface sites stronger bound to the surface, also has a component—due to its tailing to higher temperatures—of hydrogen diffusing from subsurface sites. Carbon monoxide adsorption was used to determine the number of surface sites, since it does not penetrate below the surface. Two carbon monoxide desorption peaks are observed in these experiments: at 425 and 608 K. The first peak is regarded as the adsorption of molecular carbon monoxide, and the second, as carbon monoxide dissociated on the niobium surface. The crystallographic orientation of the foils was determined by x-ray diffraction and showed a preferential (110) orientation of the untreated foil due to the effect of cold rolling. This preferential orientation decreased after hydrogen/heat treatment, appearing strong also in the (200) and (211) orientations. This change in texture of the foils is mainly due to the effect of heat treatment and not to hydrogen adsorption/desorption cycling. The kinetics of hydrogen and CO desorption is compared with that of Pd and Pd alloys.
