We introduce a novel amortised resource analysis couched in a type-and-effect system. Our analysis is formulated in terms of the physicist’s method of amortised analysis and is potentialbased. The type system makes use of logarithmic potential functions and is the first such system to exhibit logarithmic amortised complexity. With our approach, we target the automated analysis of self-adjusting data structures, like splay trees, which so far have only manually been analysed in the literature. In particular, we have implemented a semi-automated prototype, which successfully analyses the zig-zig case of splaying, once the type annotations are fixed.
Automated Quantitative Image Evaluation of Antigen Retrieval Methods for 17 Antibodies in Placentation and Implantation Diagnostic and Research

Immunostaining in clinical routine and research highly depends on standardized staining methods and quantitative image analyses. We qualitatively and quantitatively compared antigen retrieval methods (no pretreatment, pretreatment with pepsin, and heat-induced pretreatment with pH 6 or pH 9) for 17 antibodies relevant for placenta and implantation diagnostics and research. Using our newly established, comprehensive automated quantitative image analysis approach, fluorescent signal intensities were evaluated. Automated quantitative image analysis found that 9 out of 17 antibodies needed antigen retrieval to show positive staining. Heat induction proved to be the most efficient form of antigen retrieval. Eight markers stained positive after pepsin digestion, with β-hCG and vWF showing enhanced staining intensities. To avoid the misinterpretation of quantitative image data, the qualitative aspect should always be considered. Results from native placental tissue were compared with sections of a placental invasion model based on thermo-sensitive scaffolds. Immunostaining on placentas in vitro leads to new insights into fetal development and maternal pathophysiological pathways, as pregnant women are justifiably excluded from clinical studies. Thus, there is a clear need for the assessment of reliable immunofluorescent staining and pretreatment methods. Our evaluation offers a powerful tool for antibody and pretreatment selection in placental research providing objective and precise results.

Field studies were conducted for 3 yr near Mead, NE, to evaluate the effectiveness of seed safeners CGA-92194 [N-(1,3-dioxalon-2-yl-methoxy)iminobenzeneacetonitrile], NA (1,8-naphthalic anhydride), and R-29148 (2,2-dimethyl-5-methyldichloroacetyloxazolidine) to reduce herbicide injury to big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman), indiangrass [Sorghastrum nutans (L.) Nash], intermediate wheatgrass [Agropyron intermedium (Host.) Beauv.], sideoats grama [Bouteloua curtipendula (Michx.) Torr.], and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) from preplant-incorporated butylate [5-ethyl bis-(2-methylpropyl)carbamothioate] and metolachlor [2-chloro-N- (2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl) -N- (2-methoxy-l-methylethyl)acetamide], applied at 4.5 and 2.2 kg ai/ha, respectively. Big bluestem stands were satisfactory, regardless of herbicide or safener treatment, although stands were reduced by NA treatment with either herbicide. Indiangrass stands varied by year, with protection from both herbicides by R-29148 in 1984 and by NA in 1985. All safeners reduced injury to intermediate wheatgrass from metolachlor and to a lesser extent from butylate; acceptable stands were obtained with metolachlor treatment when unsafened. Sideoats grama was nearly eliminated with either herbicide, regardless of safener. Switchgrass treated with NA produced stands two- to threefold higher than other safened or unsafened seed in metolachlor plots and equal to unsafened seed in the weeded control plots.

Multivariate Lévy-driven mixed moving average (MMA) processes of the type Xt = ∬f(A, t - s)Λ(dA, ds) cover a wide range of well known and extensively used processes such as Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes, superpositions of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (supOU) processes, (fractionally integrated) continuous-time autoregressive moving average processes, and increments of fractional Lévy processes. In this paper we introduce multivariate MMA processes and give conditions for their existence and regular variation of the stationary distributions. Furthermore, we study the tail behavior of multivariate supOU processes and of a stochastic volatility model, where a positive semidefinite supOU process models the stochastic volatility.

Al-based intermetallic coatings are widely used as bond coats and for oxidation protection of turbine blades and engine components. Here we present and discuss the structural and thermal properties of novel unbalanced-magnetron sputtered Al-based coatings (single-phase intermetallic Al2Au, binary Al-Zr, and nano-structured Al-Zr-Y) developed to protect gamma-TiAl from environmental attack at elevated temperatures. Al-Zr films exhibit a coarse-grained dual-phase Al3Zr2-Al2Zr structure and are nano-structured by alloying with ~5, 10, and 14 at% Y.
Combined dynamic differential-scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analyses up to a temperature of 1150 °C reveal that the Al2Au film is very stable with only marginal mass gain from oxidation found between 800 and 1000 °C. High temperature X-ray diffraction shows that this coating retains its (311) texture up to 900 °C where Al2O3 formation leads to the depletion of Al in Al2Au and subsequently the precipitation of intermetallic AlAu. When gamma-TiAl is coated with Al2Au and exposed to cyclic oxidation tests at 750 and 850 °C good oxidation resistance is obtained as a protective oxide layer is formed.
Dual-phase Al3Zr2-Al2Zr coatings form ZrO2 and Al2O3 in oxidizing atmosphere. However, the phase transition from monoclinic (m-)ZrO2 to tetragonal (t-)ZrO2 with the accompanying volume change causes flaking of the oxide. Yttrium addition to the Al-Zr films stabilizes the cubic (c-) and t-ZrO2 and hence avoids the fatal tetragonal-monocline transformation. The thermally grown c-ZrO2 based oxides allow good adhesion to thermal barrier coatings which are themselves based on c-ZrO2.

Future science missions of the European Space Agency (ESA) to the inner part of the solar system will require the use of materials at an extreme radiation and temperature environment. A major concern regarding the selection of these materials is the thermal behaviour and the thermal stability. In this paper ways are shown to assess the thermal endurance of polymers by kinetic modelling. Two commonly used kinetic models, the one following the ASTM E 1641 and ASTM E 1877 standards and the other following the Model Free Kinetics (MFK) approach, are presented and compared to each other with the given example of two competing polyimide films, Kapton HN® of DuPont and Upilex S® of Ube Industries1, which were tested within ESA's critical materials technology program.
