To understand why autistic people are misperceived in the way Jaswal & Akhtar suggest, we should embrace concepts like the “double empathy problem” and camouflaging and recognize the negative consequences these have for mental health in autism. Moreover, we need to value expertise from experience so that autistic people have a voice and indeed a stake in research into autism.

At Sheep Mountain Bog, near Missoula, Montana, a late-glacial tephra, that probably fell in late summer, is preserved as an 8-mm-thick graded bed overlain by another 8 mm of redeposited ash mixed with lake deposits. Sediment surrounding the ash was 14C dated to about 11,200 yr B.P. Electron-microprobe analyses of the volcanic glass and hornblende phenocrysts from this ash layer indicate that they are similar in major-element chemistry to those of Glacier Peak layer G previously considered to be about 12,000 yr old or older.

Plasma chlorpromazine measured by a gas chromatographic procedure was found to disappear rapidly during the first week after withdrawal of chlorpromazine treatment in a group of 17 chronically hospitalized patients. The drug or its metabolites were no longer measurable in plasma after 8 days.

Summary
Sheppard, Mitchell and Ropar investigate whether individuals with autism are less likely than control participants to use object-specific drawing schemata which do not depict the model they actually see. Self-taught savant skills are much more frequent in autistic populations, and it is assumed that these may be responsible for a less conceptual approach which allows lower-level perceptual processing to prevail. However, because the empirical results from previous research did not prove to be conclusive, Sheppard, Mitchell and Ropar in several studies used tasks where in one condition a purely geometrical form was presented, while in the other condition features were added to convey the impression of a more meaningful object from everyday life. In children and adults without autism, meaningfulness could lower or enhance the level of drawing, depending on the kind of object, while spatial complexity appeared always to make drawing more difficult. Individuals with autism, however, were better able either to overcome or to ignore conceptual object knowledge, in particular when recreating a line drawing. It is concluded that this result reflects a special ability for literal understanding in autism.
a great deal of research on drawing has focused on the effects of conceptual knowledge on performance. Generally, the bulk of findings suggest that prior knowledge about the subject matter interferes with accurate depiction. It seems that participants are liable to rely upon this instead of the viewpoint-specific information projected onto the retina. In other words, people sometimes draw what they know rather than what they see.

It is necessary to calculate location-specific marine ΔR values in order to calibrate marine samples using calibration curves such as those provided through the IntCal98 (Stuiver et al. 1998) data. Where known-age samples are available, this calculation is straightforward (i.e. Stuiver et al. 1986). In the case that a paired marine/terrestrial sample calculation is performed, however, the standard calculation (i.e. Stuiver and Braziunas 1993) requires that the samples are treated as relating to isochronous events. This may not be an appropriate assumption for many archaeological paired samples. In this paper, we present an approach to calculating marine ΔR values that does not require the dated events to be treated as isochronous. When archaeological evidence allows the dated events to be tightly temporally constrained, the approach presented here and that described by Stuiver and Braziunas (1993) give very similar results. However, where tight temporal constraints are less certain, the 2 approaches can give rise to differing results. The example analysis considered here shows that a ΔR of −81 ± 64 14C yr is appropriate for samples in the vicinity of Nenumbo (Reef Islands, southeast Solomon Islands) around the period 2000–3000 BP.

Eleven case histories, including diagnoses and outcome, are presented of patients who made, or were the subject of, allegations of sexual abuse, but where these allegations were subsequently withdrawn or disproved. How such situations come about is discussed, with special reference to the false memory syndrome, a term made popular by recent media coverage. Given the complexity of this ‘syndrome’, an argument is put forward that diagnostic guidelines be established so that direct studies of its natural history and treatments may be undertaken.

Two geographic information system (GIS) techniques for displaying, analyzing, and interpreting geophysical data were recently applied at two archaeological sites in northern New Zealand; a pre-European Maori pa (fortification), and a late nineteenth-century European fortification. A GIS was used to stretch and filter the conductivity data from the pa to accentuate subtle contrasts and clearly delineate boundaries between areas with contrasting conductivity readings. Magnetic susceptibility data and two different bands of conductivity data from the historic fort were used as input for a GIS-based unsupervised classification. The classification delineated five spatial entities, several of which corresponded to known archaeological features. The interpretability of the geophysical data in relation to conventional visual analysis of conductivity contour maps was enhanced through the use of the GIS procedures outlined.

Twenty years ago excavation began on Marmes Rockshelter at the mouth of the Palouse River in southeastern Washington. Radiocarbon determinations from cave and adjacent floodplain sediments indicated an established pattern of human use by 10,800 B.P. However, a scarcity of dates between 6000 and 1300 B.P. suggested that either these strata were undated or the cave was unused. Examination of all Marmes radiocarbon ages showed agreement between shell and charcoal dates, but also some sediment mixing. Recent radiocarbon dating of charcoal, shell, and bone verifies previous determinations and supplies data between 6000 and 1300 B.P.
