Our focus concerns the turbulent convective flow above a uniformly heated high-aspect-ratio rectangular plate on $z=0$. Prior to this study, classic plume theory could not be applied directly as the Richardson number is ill-defined at the plate. Guided by observation, conservation equations are posed for the near-plate region where the attached buoyant flow is predominantly horizontal. Analytical solutions under the Boussinesq approximation reveal this to be a dynamically invariant region where the attached ‘plumes’ grow linearly toward the plate centreline, their merger forming an ‘apparent’ source for the vertical plume above. Coupling predictions with data from flow visualisation and temperature measurement, we deduce the half-width $0.72b_0$, height ${z=0.46b_0}$ and finite Richardson number $({\sim }18)$ of an apparent source from which plume theory can be applied to model the plume above a heated plate of width $2b_0$. Finally, practical implications of this advancement to the analytical theory of turbulent plumes are noted.

As COVID-19 was declared a health emergency in March 2020, there was immense demand for information about the novel pathogen. This paper examines the clinician-reported impact of Project ECHO COVID-19 Clinical Rounds on clinician learning. Primary sources of study data were Continuing Medical Education (CME) Surveys for each session from the dates of March 24, 2020 to July 30, 2020 and impact surveys conducted in November 2020, which sought to understand participants’ overall assessment of sessions. Quantitative analyses included descriptive statistics and Mann-Whitney testing. Qualitative data were analyzed through inductive thematic analysis. Clinicians rated their knowledge after each session as significantly higher than before that session. 75.8% of clinicians reported they would ‘definitely’ or ‘probably’ use content gleaned from each attended session and clinicians reported specific clinical and operational changes made as a direct result of sessions. 94.6% of respondents reported that COVID-19 Clinical Rounds helped them provide better care to patients. 89% of respondents indicated they ‘strongly agree’ that they would join ECHO calls again.COVID-19 Clinical Rounds offers a promising model for the establishment of dynamic peer-to-peer tele-mentoring communities for low or no-notice response where scientifically tested or clinically verified practice evidence is limited.
Two-dimensional buoyant plumes in a uniform co-flow

The behaviour of turbulent, buoyant, planar plumes is fundamentally coupled to the environment within which they develop. The effect of a background stratification directly influences a plumes buoyancy and has been the subject of numerous studies. Conversely, the effect of an ambient co-flow, which directly influences the vertical momentum of a plume, has not previously been the subject of theoretical investigation. The governing conservation equations for the case of a uniform co-flow are derived and the local dynamical behaviour of the plume is shown to be characterised by the scaled source Richardson number and the relative magnitude of the co-flow and plume source velocities. For forced, pure and lazy plume release conditions the co-flow acts to narrow the plume and reduce both the dilution and the asymptotic Richardson number relative to the classic zero co-flow case. Analytical solutions are developed for pure plumes from line sources, and for highly forced and highly lazy releases from sources of finite width in a weak co-flow. Contrary to releases in quiescent surroundings, our solutions show that all classes of release can exhibit plume contraction and the associated necking. For entraining plumes, a dynamical invariance spatially only occurs for pure and forced releases and we derive the co-flow strengths that lead to this invariance.

The first demonstration of laser action in ruby was made in 1960 by T. H. Maiman of Hughes Research Laboratories, USA. Many laboratories worldwide began the search for lasers using different materials, operating at different wavelengths. In the UK, academia, industry and the central laboratories took up the challenge from the earliest days to develop these systems for a broad range of applications. This historical review looks at the contribution the UK has made to the advancement of the technology, the development of systems and components and their exploitation over the last 60 years.

Understanding individual differences in neural responses to stressful environments is an important avenue of research throughout development. These differences may be especially critical during adolescence, which is characterized by opportunities for healthy development and increased susceptibility to the development of psychopathology. While the neural correlates of the psychosocial stress response have been investigated in adults, these links have not been explored during development. Using a new task, the Minnesota Imaging Stress Test in Children (MISTiC), differences in activation are found in fusiform gyrus, superior frontal gyrus, insula, and anterior cingulate cortex when comparing a stressful math task to a nonstressful math task. The MISTiC task successfully elicits cortisol responses in a similar proportion of adolescents as in behavioral studies while collecting brain imaging data. Cortisol responders and nonresponders did not differ in their perceived stress level or behavioral performance during the task despite differences in neuroendocrine function. Future research will be able to leverage the MISTiC task for many purposes, including probing associations between individual differences in stress responses with environmental conditions, personality differences, and the development of psychopathology.

The release of buoyant harmful gases within enclosed spaces, such as tunnels and corridors, may engender specific health, industrial and transportation risks. For safety, a simple ventilation strategy for these spaces is to impose a flow along the tunnel, whose velocity is defined as ‘critical’, that confines the front of harmful buoyant gases immediately downstream of the source of emission. Determining the critical velocity as a function of the geometrical and dynamical conditions at the source is a fundamental fluid mechanics problem which has yet to be elucidated; this problem concerns the dynamics of non-Boussinesq releases relating to large differences between the densities of the buoyant and the ambient fluids. We have investigated this problem theoretically, by means of a simplified model of a top-hat plume in a cross-flow, and in complementary experiments by means of tests in a reduced-scale ventilated tunnel, examining releases from circular sources. Experimental results reveal: (i) the existence of two flow regimes depending on the plume Richardson number at the source $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}_{i}$, one for momentum-dominated releases, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}_{i}\ll 1$, and a second for buoyancy-dominated releases, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}_{i}\gg 1$, with a smooth transition between the two; and (ii) the presence of relevant non-Boussinesq effects only for momentum-dominated releases. All these features can be conveniently predicted by the plume-based model, whose validity is, strictly speaking, limited to releases issuing from ‘small’ sources in ‘weak’ ventilation flows. Analytical solutions of the model are generally in good agreement with the experimental data, even for values of the governing parameters that are beyond the range of validity for the model. The solutions aid to clarify the effect of the source radius, and reveal interesting behaviours in the limits $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}_{i}\rightarrow 0$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}_{i}\rightarrow \infty$. These findings support the adoption of simplified models to simulate light gas releases in confined ventilated spaces.
The relative strength of perovskite and post-perovskite NaCoF3

Stable perovskite and metastable post-perovskite NaCoF3 were deformed in pure-shear geometry in a deformation-DIA press with radiographic monitoring of the sample strain. In isothermal experiments where there was no transformation, post-perovskite was found to be 5 times weaker than perovskite. In temperature-ramping experiments where post-perovskite transformed to perovskite during the deformation experiment the initial post-perovskite sample was 5–10 times weaker than perovskite under comparable conditions and their strengths converged during the transformation, being equal on completion of the transformation. These results confirm recent findings which show that postperovskite is weaker than perovskite, regardless of the prior history of the sample.

The electron spin resonance spectrum of a sample of natural, orange-coloured fluorite from Broken Hill, Australia, has been observed and shown to arise from the presence of manganese ions. From an analysis of the structure of this spectrum it has been possible to estimate the various contributions to the ionic energy level splitting and to show that these are in good agreement with comparable results for synthetic material. It is evident that the manganese ions have entered the lattice substitutionally at Ca2+ sites and the nature of this site is discussed.

The thermal diffusivity of diopside, jadeite and enstatite were measured at simultaneous pressures and temperatures of up to 7 GPa and 1200 K using the X-radiographic Ångström method. The measurements herein show that the pressure dependency of thermal diffusivity in pyroxenes is significantly greater than in olivine or garnet and that in the MORB-layer of a subducting slab the thermal diffusivity of pyroxenes are a factor of 1.5 greater than that of olivine. The temperature dependence of all the data sets is well described by a low-order polynomial fit to 1/K and the pressure dependence is exponential in 1/K, formulations which are consistent with the damped harmonic oscillator model for thermal properties.

An entrainment model for lazy turbulent plumes is proposed, the resulting solutions of the plume conservation equations are developed and the implications for plume behaviour are considered and compared with the available experimental data. Indeed, the applicability of the classic solutions of the conservation equations subject to source conditions that produce lazy plumes, i.e. those with suitably high source Richardson number, contains an essential weakness: the underlying assumption of a constant entrainment coefficient. While entrainment models prescribing the dependence of the entrainment coefficient on the local Richardson number have been proposed for forced plumes, corresponding formulations for lazy plumes have not until now been considered. In the context of saline plumes, the model is applied directly. For hot gaseous plumes, we use a modified definition of buoyancy flux to recover a constant buoyancy flux in a non-stratified environment, despite the specific heat varying with the temperature. After a brief review of existing forced-plume formulations of entrainment, a power-law variation is adopted for the lazy plume. The plume equations are solved for the parameter $0\leqslant \unicode[STIX]{x1D714}<1$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}$ denotes the exponent of the power law. The cases of pure plumes and lazy plumes are then analysed in more detail; to the best of our knowledge this represents the first modelling of variable entrainment for lazy plumes. Specifically, it is shown that classic plume theory is recovered for $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}=0$, while for $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}=1/5$ the plume equations may be solved using usual functions (notably polynomials) only. The results of the models for these cases are very similar, which advocates the idea of selecting systematically $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}=1/5$, instead of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}=0$, for cases where the effect of variation of entrainment is weak, since the new model leads to simple calculations. In the case of very lazy plumes, it is shown that, provided that a relevant value of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}$ is chosen, the new model reproduces the available experimental results well.

During 1990 we surveyed the southern sky using a multi-beam receiver at frequencies of 4850 and 843 MHz. The half-power beamwidths were 4 and 25 arcmin respectively. The finished surveys cover the declination range between +10 and −90 degrees declination, essentially complete in right ascension, an area of 7.30 steradians. Preliminary analysis of the 4850 MHz data indicates that we will achieve a five sigma flux density limit of about 30 mJy. We estimate that we will find between 80 000 and 90 000 new sources above this limit. This is a revised version of the paper presented at the Regional Meeting by the first four authors; the surveys now have been completed.

Gamma-ray burst host galaxies are deficient in molecular gas, and show anomalous metal-poor regions close to GRB positions. Using recent Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) Hi observations we show that they have substantial atomic gas reservoirs. This suggests that star formation in these galaxies may be fuelled by recent inflow of metal-poor atomic gas. While this process is debated, it can happen in low-metallicity gas near the onset of star formation because gas cooling (necessary for star formation) is faster than the Hi-to-H2 conversion.

We present experimental measurements conducted on freely propagating, turbulent, steady thermal air plumes. Three plumes are studied with differing source conditions, ranging from jet-like, momentum flux dominated releases, to pure plume releases, characterised by a balance between the momentum, volume and buoyancy fluxes at the source. Velocity measurements from near the source to a height of tens of source diameters were made using particle image velocimetry (PIV), providing a high spatial resolution. Temperatures were measured with thermocouples. From these measurements, we investigate the vertical development of the plume fluxes and radial profiles of the mean velocity and temperature. These allow us to analyse the local self-preserving characteristics of the mean flow and to estimate the dependence with height of the plume Richardson number ${\it\Gamma}$. In addition, we analyse the similarity of one-point and two-point second-order velocity statistics, and we discuss the role of ${\it\Gamma}$ on the vertical development of the bulk dynamical parameters of the plume, namely, the turbulent viscosity, the turbulent Prandtl number and the entrainment coefficient ${\it\alpha}_{G}$. Comparison with previous experimental results and with estimates of the entrainment coefficient based on the mean kinetic energy budget allow us to conclude on the influence of ${\it\Gamma}$ on the entrainment process and to explain possible physical reasons for the high scatter in estimates of ${\it\alpha}_{G}$ in the literature.

The use of DNA markers to track the development of anthelmintic resistance in parasites of livestock would allow informed choices for the management of this important problem. We describe a genetic mapping approach for the discovery of DNA markers for anthelmintic resistance in Haemonchus contortus. We crossed a multi-drug resistant field isolate of H. contortus with a well-characterized laboratory strain susceptible to 4 drug classes. The F2 were separately selected with 5 anthelmintics from 4 drug classes, producing drug-resistant populations carrying gene variants derived from both the field isolate and the laboratory strain. Individual F2 worms were analysed using amplicon length polymorphisms (ALPs). We looked for field isolate alleles over- or under-represented in F2 populations compared to the unselected F2 and/or the laboratory strain. The data we obtained suggest that marker association can be used to link neutral markers with resistance, but also that more markers and perhaps more inbred laboratory strains would make the procedure more likely to succeed.
