Filamentary structures can form within the beam of protons accelerated during the interaction of an intense laser pulse with an ultrathin foil target. Such behaviour is shown to be dependent upon the formation time of quasi-static magnetic field structures throughout the target volume and the extent of the rear surface proton expansion over the same period. This is observed via both numerical and experimental investigations. By controlling the intensity profile of the laser drive, via the use of two temporally separated pulses, both the initial rear surface proton expansion and magnetic field formation time can be varied, resulting in modification to the degree of filamentary structure present within the laser-driven proton beam.

The literature contains considerable disagreements on the relative stabilities of the members of the copper hydroxyl sulphate family. Titration of copper sulphate with sodium hydroxide is claimed by some to produce only brochantite, while other reports indicate that antlerite and a dihydrate of antlerite are produced in the titration. Most stability field diagrams show that antlerite is the more stable stoichiomer at pH 4 and sulphate activity of 0.05–1. We have reexamined this stoichiometric family by titration of aqueous copper sulphate with sodiumhydroxide and sodium carbonate, reverse titration of sodiumhydroxide with copper sulphate and simultaneous addition of copper sulphate and sodium hydroxide at a variety of mole ratios, concentrations, temperatures and reaction times. We have also explored the reaction of copper hydroxide with copper sulphate and the reaction of weak bases, such as sodiumacetate, sodiumcarbonate and urea, with copper sulphate. Our work indicates that: (1) antlerite is not formed in reactions of 0.05 to 1.2 M CuSO4 with 0.05–1.0 M NaOH or Na2CO3 at room temperature; (2) antlerite is formed in the addition of small concentrations of base (≤0.01 M) to 1 M CuSO4 at 80°C, but not at roomtem perature or with 0.01 M CuSO4 at 80°C; (3) the formation of Cu5(SO4)2(OH)6·4H2O occurs at large Cu2+ to base mole ratios; (4) the compound described in the literature as antlerite dihydrate is actually Cu5(SO4)2(OH)6.4H2O; (5) at mole ratios of Cu2+ to OH– ranging from 2:1 to 1:2 the predominant product is brochantite; and (6) brochantite and Cu5(SO4)2(OH)6.4H2O are converted to antlerite in the presence of 1 M CuSO4 (the latter requires temperatures of 80°C or greater).
The Ksp (ion activity product) values of antlerite and brochantite were determined to be 2.53 (0.01)⨯10−48 and 1.01 (0.01)⨯10−69, respectively, using atomic absorption spectroscopy and Visual MINTEQ after equilibration in solutions of varying ionic strength and pH for six days. These values are in good agreement with those from the literature. However, after 6 months, antlerite in contact with solution is partially converted to brochantite and hence is metastable with a relatively low conversion rate. The Ksp value for antlerite must therefore be considered approximate. The relative stabilities of the copper hydroxyl sulphates are rationalized using appropriate equations and Gibbs energy calculations. A Gibbs free energy of formation for Cu5(SO4)2(OH)6.4H2O of –3442 kJ/mol was obtained from the simple salt approximation.
Supplementation of a Lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product can attenuate the acute phase response following a lipopolysaccharide challenge in weaned pigs

Lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation products have been used to improve the performance of nursery pigs. However, research on the influence of this supplement on health is lacking. This study was designed to determine if feeding a Lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product to weaned pigs would reduce stress and acute phase responses (APR) following a lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge. Pigs (n=30; 6.4±0.1 kg) were individually housed in stainless steel pens with ad libitum access to feed and water. Pigs were weighed upon arrival, assigned to one of three groups (n=10/treatment), and fed for 18 days: (1) Control, fed a non-medicated starter diet; (2) Control diet with the inclusion of a Lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product at 1 kg/metric ton (SGX1) and (3) Control diet with the inclusion of a Lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product at 2 kg/metric ton (SGX2). On day 7 pigs were anesthetized for insertion of an i.p. temperature device, and similarly on day 14 for insertion of a jugular catheter. Pigs were challenged i.v. with LPS (25 µg/kg BW) on day 15. Blood samples were collected at 0.5 h (serum) and 1 h (complete blood cell counts) intervals from −2 to 8 h and at 24 h relative to LPS administration at 0 h. Pigs and feeders were weighed on days 7, 14 and 18. The supplemented pigs had increased BW and average daily gain before the challenge. In response to LPS, there was a greater increase in i.p. temperature in Control pigs compared with supplemented pigs. In addition, cortisol was reduced in SGX2 pigs while cortisol was elevated in SGX1 pigs at several time points post-challenge. White blood cells, neutrophils and lymphocytes were decreased in SGX1 and SGX2 compared with Control pigs. Furthermore, the pro-inflammatory cytokine response varied by treatment and dose of treatment. Specifically, serum TNF-α was greatest in SGX2, intermediate in Control, and least in SGX1 pigs, while the magnitude and temporal pattern of IFN-γ in SGX2 pigs was delayed and reduced. In contrast, IL-6 concentrations were reduced in both SGX treatment groups compared with Control pigs. These data demonstrate that different supplementation feed inclusion rates produced differential responses, and that feeding SynGenX to weaned pigs attenuated the APR to an LPS challenge.

The response of peanut to low rates of MSMA under weed-free conditions was studied in 1992 and 1994 near Tifton, GA. MSMA was applied 40, 70, 100, or 130 days after emergence (DAE). At each application timing, MSMA was applied at 0, 90, 168, and 336 g ai ha−1. MSMA application timing did not affect peanut yield. Increasing rates of MSMA caused minor reduction in peanut yield. Analysis using atomic absorption spectroscopy showed elemental arsenic accumulation of ≤ 0.7 ppm in peanut kernels from MSMA applied 70 and 100 DAE. This approximates the time interval of peanut pod and kernel formation. MSMA applied 40 and 130 DAE resulted in little detectable arsenic in kernels. Low rates of MSMA, originating as drift from aerial applications to cotton or illegal and unsound applications to peanut for Florida beggarweed control, are not likely to reduce peanut yields. The greatest hazard from peanut exposure to MSMA is accumulation of arsenic in kernels, which would adversely affect peanut marketability and consumer demand.

Studies were conducted in 1988, 1989, and 1992 in Plains, GA to measure effects of paraquat and alachlor on ‘Florunner’ peanut. Peanut treated with paraquat (0.14 kg ai/ha) plus alachlor (3.4 kg ai/ha) applied at vegetative emergence (VE), or paraquat plus alachlor VE followed by paraquat 28 days after emergence (DAE) were compared with a nontreated control. Both herbicide treatments reduced peanut foliage biomass at 65 DAE in 1989 and 1992. Herbicide treatments did not affect foliage biomass 90 DAE in 1988 and 122 DAE in 1989, but paraquat plus alachlor followed by paraquat reduced foliage biomass at 122 DAE in 1992. Pod biomass, measured at 90 and 65 DAE in 1988 and 1992, respectively, was reduced by herbicides. However, pod biomass did not differ among treatments 122 DAE in 1989 and 1992. Percent reflectance from the peanut canopy measured no effects from herbicides in 1988. However, in 1989 and 1992 herbicides applied sequentially reduced peanut canopy development. Peanut treated with a single herbicide and sequentially took longer to mature. Once optimum maturity was reached, peanut yields were not reduced.
An Undergraduate Student Project to Improve Mechanical Control of Perennial Nutsedges with a Peanut Digger in Organic Crop Production

Yellow and purple nutsedge are common in the southeastern United States, and both perennial species are difficult to control in organic crop-production systems. Tubers are generally confined to the upper portions of the soil profile and are vulnerable to desiccation when brought to the soil surface. A peanut digger is a common implement found in the coastal plain region of the southeastern United States and has shown promise controlling perennial nutsedges in fallow sites. The peanut digger undercuts perennial nutsedges, deposits weeds on the soil surface, and exposes weeds to desiccation. However, rainfall after tillage with the peanut digger allows displaced nutsedges to survive. As part of a senior-level class project, undergraduate mechanical engineering students from Auburn University designed and constructed a cart attached to a peanut digger that collected nutsedges. Key features included a custom hitch that allowed the correct plane of movement and a hydraulic conveyor system that discarded the perennial nutsedges off-site, away from the field. The prototype was tested in a fallow location in the summer of 2014 with a yellow nutsedge infestation averaging 148 plants m−2. One week after the initial field test, tillage using the peanut digger with specialized cart reduced yellow nutsedge densities in the tilled area by > 99%.

Medical technology offers enormous potential for scalable medicine—to improve the quality and access in health care while simultaneously reducing cost. However, current medical device innovation within companies often only offers incremental advances on existing products, or originates from engineers with limited knowledge of the clinical complexities. We describe how the Hacking Medicine Initiative, based at Massachusetts Institute of Technology has developed an innovative “healthcare hackathon” approach, bringing diverse teams together to rapidly validate clinical needs and develop solutions. Hackathons are based on three core principles; emphasis on a problem-based approach, cross-pollination of disciplines, and “pivoting” on or rapidly iterating on ideas. Hackathons also offer enormous potential for innovation in global health by focusing on local needs and resources as well as addressing feasibility and cultural contextualization. Although relatively new, the success of this approach is clear, as evidenced by the development of successful startup companies, pioneering product design, and the incorporation of creative people from outside traditional life science backgrounds who are working with clinicians and other scientists to create transformative innovation in health care.

The B fields in OB stars (BOB) survey is an ESO large programme collecting spectropolarimetric observations for a large number of early-type stars in order to study the occurrence rate, properties, and ultimately the origin of magnetic fields in massive stars. As of July 2014, a total of 98 objects were observed over 20 nights with FORS2 and HARPSpol. Our preliminary results indicate that the fraction of magnetic OB stars with an organised, detectable field is low. This conclusion, now independently reached by two different surveys, has profound implications for any theoretical model attempting to explain the field formation in these objects. We discuss in this contribution some important issues addressed by our observations (e.g., the lower bound of the field strength) and the discovery of some remarkable objects.

Infection of the barnacle Semibalanus balanoides with the digenean trematode Maritrema arenaria was investigated at 17 sites along the Co. Down coastline. There was a low background level of infection. Abundance of M. arenaria, however, was substantially greater at sites close to fish factories and at a site close to a sewage works. Aggregation of M. arenaria in S. balanoides was least marked at low mean parasite burdens. The parasitic burden was related more closely to barnacle size at a site of heavy infection than at one with a low abundance. There was a significant association between height on the shore and number of encysted metacercariae in S. balanoides. This was independent of variation in host size. It is concluded that relationships that bring about overdispersion of digeneans, such as that between the size-structure of the host population and parasite infection, may be dependent on the overall abundance of the parasite.

This study compared ¾ Hereford–¼ Brahman calves with Hereford calves under Imperial Valley conditions. The calves produced in four successive crops were all paternal half sibs.
The cross-bred calves outgained the Hereford calves in the summer both on pasture and in the feedlot; the reverse was true for feedlot gains during the fall and winter, the period of non-stressful weather in the Imperial Valley for British type cattle. Possible causes for the breed by season interaction are discussed.

Carbon nanotubes containing substitutionally “doped” nitrogen were synthesized using injection chemical vapor deposition methods. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy comparisons between materials grown with different nitrogen sources suggest that the nitrogen content of the nanotubes has little correlation with the total nitrogen content of the “dopant” gas. Tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy do, however, confirm that drastic distortions occur within the graphene lattice as the nitrogen is substituted. Further, donor states are clearly identifiable within the density of electronic states.

Epitaxial buffer layers of Ho2O3 on biaxially textured nickel were fabricated using a chelate (acetic acid) solution route as an alternative to the 2-methoxyethanol solution approach, which has demonstrated good texturing characteristics. Plan-view SEM studies of the films as a function of heat treatment temperature have shown that the holmium oxide film pyrolyzes into an open structure with a high level of interconnected porosity before densification, without significant film shrinkage in the thickness direction. Consolidation of the film started around 900°C along the backbone of the open structure and sintering to a dense film of uniform small crystallites (∼25 nm) was observed at higher temperature. The as-received nickel tapes displayed significant surface damage with a roughness on the order of 1000 Å. Electron backscattering analysis suggests that only 65% of the nickel grains were aligned along the (100) axis within 5°. Finally, STM studies of the nickel substrate have shown that small nickel oxide crystallites were formed on the surface when the substrate is in contact with air.

Monolayer films of poly(m-phenylenevinylene-co-2,5-dioctoxy-p-phenylenevinylene) (PmPV) supported on highly orientated pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) have been investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). While there are areas of the surface covered with a featureless polymer layer, we also observe large regions with surprisingly long range order. Structural models of the polymer, as well as tunneling spectra, suggest that this ordering is derived from substrate-polymer epitaxy.

We evaluated selected cool-season annual and perennial legumes as potential ground covers to supply nitrogen and to increase beneficial arthropod populations in a pecan orchard. Densities of aphids (Homoptera: Aphididae), lady beetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), damsel bug (Hemiptera: Nabidae), green lacewings (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae), brown lacewings (Neuroptera: Hemerobiidae), hover flies (Diptera: Syrphidae), spined soldier bug and other stink bugs (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), and spiders (Araneida) were monitored at 7–14 day intervals during the growing season for three years. Aboveground biomass production and nitrogen content of the legumes was measured for two years. Aphids peaked during early spring each year, with the highest density usually on ‘Dixie’ crimson clover and ‘Kenland’ red clover. Density of lady beetles was positively correlated with that of aphids, but spider densities were not. Other arthropods usually were not abundant. Nitrogen in the tops of the annual legumes ranged from 20 kg/ha to 89 kg/ha when assessed after a single harvest at anthesis; for the perennial legumes it was from 108 kg/ha to 179 kg/ha following two harvests in June and September. We chose two annual legumes (‘Dixie’ crimson clover and hairy vetch) and two perennial legumes (‘Louisiana S-1’ white clover and ‘Kenland’ red clover) for further evaluation.

Gas phase processing rakes laser deposition over large areas possible but homogeneous nucleation of large atomic clusters must be avoided if films are to be produced. Clusters can be highly variable in size from a few atoms to significant fractions of a micrometer. If conditions do not allow for complete quenching of the clusters produced in the gas phase, these clusters can arrive at the substrate with sufficient energy to self sinter into homogeneous films which are substantially different from metallic films grown by thermal techniques. Using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we have characterized the microstructure of thin metallic films deposited by laser breakdown chemical vapor deposition and identified a range of deposition conditions which can lead from powders to homogeneous polycrystalline films and mixed phase materials. Gas phase nucleation is dependent on reactant partial pressures and the gas phase quench rate which car be varied in part by adjusting the H2 content of the source gas. Manipulation of these parameters can vary powder size from about one micrometer to less than 2 nanometers. Variation of the quench rate during the deposition of polycrystalline films varies the grain size in the films. heating the substrate drastically changes the conditions under which the film is formed and as a consequence, can radically alter the microstructure of the film itself.
