Excavated over two centuries ago, the Upton Lovell G2a ‘Wessex Culture’ burial has held a prominent place in research on Bronze Age Britain. In particular, was it the grave of a ‘shaman’ or a metalworker? We take a new approach to the grave goods, employing microwear analysis and scanning electron microscopy to map a history of interactions between people and materials, identifying evidence for the presence of Bronze Age gold on five artefacts, four for the first time. Advancing a new materialist approach, we identify a goldworking toolkit, linking gold, stone and copper objects within a chaîne opératoire, concluding that modern categorisations of these materials miss much of their complexity.

The first demonstration of laser action in ruby was made in 1960 by T. H. Maiman of Hughes Research Laboratories, USA. Many laboratories worldwide began the search for lasers using different materials, operating at different wavelengths. In the UK, academia, industry and the central laboratories took up the challenge from the earliest days to develop these systems for a broad range of applications. This historical review looks at the contribution the UK has made to the advancement of the technology, the development of systems and components and their exploitation over the last 60 years.

Evolution of cold dry snow and firn plays important roles in glaciology; however, the physical formulation of a densification law is still an active research topic. We forced eight firn-densification models and one seasonal-snow model in six different experiments by imposing step changes in temperature and accumulation-rate boundary conditions; all of the boundary conditions were chosen to simulate firn densification in cold, dry environments. While the intended application of the participating models varies, they are describing the same physical system and should in principle yield the same solutions. The firn models all produce plausible depth-density profiles, but the model outputs in both steady state and transient modes differ for quantities that are of interest in ice core and altimetry research. These differences demonstrate that firn-densification models are incorrectly or incompletely representing physical processes. We quantitatively characterize the differences among the results from the various models. For example, we find depth-integrated porosity is unlikely to be inferred with confidence from a firn model to better than 2 m in steady state at a specific site with known accumulation rate and temperature. Firn Model Intercomparison Experiment can provide a benchmark of results for future models, provide a basis to quantify model uncertainties and guide future directions of firn-densification modeling.

The Nakhla meteorite represents basaltic rock from the martian upper crust, with reduced carbon indicative of the ingress of carbonaceous fluids. Study of a terrestrial analogue basalt with reduced carbon from the Ordovician of Northern Ireland shows that remote analysis could detect the carbon using Raman spectroscopy. Analysis of gases released by crushing detects methane-rich fluids in the basalt and especially in cross-cutting carbon-bearing veinlets. The results suggest that automated analysis on Mars could detect the reduced carbon, which may be derived from magmatic and/or meteoritic infall sources.

Objective.
Describe central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLA-BSI) epidemiology in pediatric intensive care units (PICUs).
Design.Descriptive study (29 PICUs); cohort study (18 PICUs).
Setting.PICUs in a national improvement collaborative.
Patients/Participants.Patients admitted October 2006 to December 2007 with 1 or more central lines.
Methods.CLA-BSIs were prospectively identified using the National Healthcare Safety Network definition and then readjudicated using the revised 2008 definition. Risk factors for CLA-BSI were examined using age-adjusted, time-varying Cox proportional hazards models.
Results. In the descriptive study, the CLA-BSI incidence was 3.1/1,000 central line-days; readjudication with the revised definition resulted in a 17% decrease. In the cohort study, the readjudicated incidence was 2.0/1,000 central line-days. Ninety-nine percent of patients were CLA-BSI-free through day 7, after which the daily risk of CLA-BSI doubled to 0.27% per day. Compared with patients with respiratory diagnoses (most prevalent category), CLA-BSI risk was higher in patients with gastrointestinal diagnoses (hazard ratio [HR], 2.7 [95% confidence interval {CI}, 1.43-5.16]; P<.002) and oncologic diagnoses (HR, 2.6 [CI, 1.06-6.45]; P=.037). Among all patients, including those with more than 1 central line, CLA-BSI risk was lower among patients with a central line inserted in the jugular vein (HR, 0.43 [CI, 0.30-0.95]; P<.03).
Conclusions. The 2008 CLA-BSI definition change decreased the measured incidence. The daily CLA-BSI risk was very low in patients during the first 7 days of catheterization but doubled thereafter. The risk of CLA-BSI was lower in patients with lines inserted in the jugular vein and higher in patients with gastrointestinal and oncologic diagnoses. These patients are target populations for additional study and intervention.

We estimate that roughly one-third of Gaoligongshan's total area is now devoted exclusively to agriculture and other uses that preclude maintenance of biodiversity. In most cases, primary forests existing at the establishment of the three Nature Reserves have been conserved effectively. However, small-scale (but largely unmonitored and uncontrolled) tree-felling and other vegetation disturbance continues in many areas. Despite these lapses, forests are in better condition within, than outside of, established Nature Reserves. As well, the future for these forests looks brighter than for those surviving outside Reserves: at the very least, county governments are not free to convert them into pine plantations.
In contrast, hunting has been reduced only slightly — much less effectively than forest cutting has been. Although it is possible to find evidence of persistence of some rare animal species, and some Nature Reserve personnel believe there are indications that sensitive and rare species are showing an upward trend, poaching of animals is still common, particularly of smaller-bodied or lesser-known species. Although it seems well established that wellknown species (e.g. Takin) must be strictly protected, many species at equal or greater risk of extirpation and equally protected legally (e.g. some species of pheasants), do not enjoy such effective protection.

Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), a protein, plays a key role in wound healing and blood vessel regeneration. However, most negative effects in vivo, or in vitro result from the over dosage of bFGF. Furthermore, it needs to keep the bFGF from protein denaturant. Thus, this study aims to develop a new delivery system based on silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) dispersed in collagen patch for delivery of the bFGF in a local and prolonged manner. In this research, SiO2 NPs are used to encapsulate bFGF through a modified water-in-oil micro-emulsion. The bFGF-loaded nanoparticles afterwards are dispersed in the collagen-based matrix through a EDC cross-linking step. The in vitro release kinetics of SiO2 NPs - encapsulated bFGF with and without collagen matrix have been monitored through ELISA. In addition, the cytotoxicity of SiO2 NPs is investigated by studying the viability of Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVEC) under the different concentrations of SiO2 NPs. It has found the average diameter (d) for SiO2 NPs encapsulating bFGF is 45 ± 8 nm with a loading efficiency of 72.5±3%. The maximum concentration of bFGF locally released from SiO2 NPs impregnated collagen matrix can be monitored after 30 days, while bFGF released from SiO2 NPs can be detected in 20 days. The further prolonged releasing after the nanoparticle-encapsulated bFGF laden collagen matrix is possibly due to the interaction between the nanoparticles and collagen matrix. In addition, the biocompatibility of the SiO2 NP has been investigated. We found that SiO2 NPs at the concentration of 50 μg/ml can still keep the cell alive. The results indicate that the nanoparticle-laden collagen matrix can locally deliver growth factor in a prolonged manner. This new delivery system may benefit to blood vessel regeneration and potentiate greater angiogenesis.

Trigonometric parallaxes have been measured by Dahn et al. (2002) for 28 cool dwarfs and brown dwarfs, including 17 L dwarfs and three T dwarfs. Broadband CCD and near-IR photometry (VRIz*JHK) have been obtained for these objects and for 24 additional late-type dwarfs. These data have been supplemented with astrometry and photometry from the literature, including parallaxes for the brighter companions of ten L and two T dwarfs. The absolute magnitudes and colors are reviewed here. The I - J color and the spectral type are both good predictors of absolute magnitude for late-M and L dwarfs. MJ becomes monotonically fainter with I - J color and with spectral type through late-L dwarfs, then brightens for early-T dwarfs. In contrast, the J - K color correlates poorly with absolute magnitude for L dwarfs. Using several other parameters from the literature (Li detection, Hα emission strength, projected rotation velocity, and tangential velocity), we fail to uncover any measurable parameter that correlates with the anomalous J - K color.
