The U.S. Department of Agriculture–Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) has been a leader in weed science research covering topics ranging from the development and use of integrated weed management (IWM) tactics to basic mechanistic studies, including biotic resistance of desirable plant communities and herbicide resistance. ARS weed scientists have worked in agricultural and natural ecosystems, including agronomic and horticultural crops, pastures, forests, wild lands, aquatic habitats, wetlands, and riparian areas. Through strong partnerships with academia, state agencies, private industry, and numerous federal programs, ARS weed scientists have made contributions to discoveries in the newest fields of robotics and genetics, as well as the traditional and fundamental subjects of weed–crop competition and physiology and integration of weed control tactics and practices. Weed science at ARS is often overshadowed by other research topics; thus, few are aware of the long history of ARS weed science and its important contributions. This review is the result of a symposium held at the Weed Science Society of America’s 62nd Annual Meeting in 2022 that included 10 separate presentations in a virtual Weed Science Webinar Series. The overarching themes of management tactics (IWM, biological control, and automation), basic mechanisms (competition, invasive plant genetics, and herbicide resistance), and ecosystem impacts (invasive plant spread, climate change, conservation, and restoration) represent core ARS weed science research that is dynamic and efficacious and has been a significant component of the agency’s national and international efforts. This review highlights current studies and future directions that exemplify the science and collaborative relationships both within and outside ARS. Given the constraints of weeds and invasive plants on all aspects of food, feed, and fiber systems, there is an acknowledged need to face new challenges, including agriculture and natural resources sustainability, economic resilience and reliability, and societal health and well-being.

Summary
German Lutheran pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer has been lauded for his efforts to resist both the Third Reich and the German Protestant Church's support for the Nazi regime. Interest in Bonhoeffer increased just as Jewish-Christian dialogue began anew in the 1960s and 1970s, leading many to wonder if he might be considered a guide for post- Holocaust Jewish-Christian relations. That suggestion is complicated by Bonhoeffer's use of traditional Christian anti-Jewish theology, even in his efforts to resist National Socialism. This essay revisits the author's own previously published article to examine efforts to defend or promote Bonhoeffer as a source for Jewish-Christian relations. Informed by a deeper reading of Emil Fackenheim and Eberhard Bethge, the author revises his previous conclusions and offers a new path forward.
The life and theological commitments of German Lutheran pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906–45) are of perennial interest to people exploring interactions between religion and state in the context of World War II. A self-declared pacifist, Bonhoeffer led ecumenical efforts prior to the onset of the Third Reich, helped organize and resource the Confessing Church movement created to resist the Nazi-aligned Deutsche Christen (German Protestant Church), and, once those efforts went nowhere, joined in several assassination plots against Adolf Hitler. He was executed in the Flossenbürg concentration camp just over two weeks before the camp was liberated.
Interest in Bonhoeffer intensified in the 1960s in the context of post- Holocaust Jewish and Christian thought. Especially when read through his prison writings alone, Bonhoeffer was often presented as a theologi cal hero. Scholars committed to reconstructing post-Holocaust Jewish and Christian life (both independently and in dialogue) were heavily attuned to discourse around Bonhoeffer. More documents and historical detail about Bonhoeffer emerged in the late 1950s and 1960s, just when debates about life in the post-Holocaust era were emerging. Especially among Jewish scholars and Christian theologians, Bonhoeffer was a figure to be studied and interrogated. Central to the debate has been the question whether, for all his lived commitment to resistance to murderous totalitarianism, Bonhoeffer can be considered a guide for the development of post-Holocaust Christian theology or Jewish-Christian relations.
In 2004, while I was a doctoral candidate in Baylor University’s Institute for Church-State Studies and affiliated with the Center for American and Jewish Studies, my first published academic article joined that stream of discourse.

The first demonstration of laser action in ruby was made in 1960 by T. H. Maiman of Hughes Research Laboratories, USA. Many laboratories worldwide began the search for lasers using different materials, operating at different wavelengths. In the UK, academia, industry and the central laboratories took up the challenge from the earliest days to develop these systems for a broad range of applications. This historical review looks at the contribution the UK has made to the advancement of the technology, the development of systems and components and their exploitation over the last 60 years.

In this paper, we describe the system design and capabilities of the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) radio telescope at the conclusion of its construction project and commencement of science operations. ASKAP is one of the first radio telescopes to deploy phased array feed (PAF) technology on a large scale, giving it an instantaneous field of view that covers $31\,\textrm{deg}^{2}$ at $800\,\textrm{MHz}$. As a two-dimensional array of 36$\times$12 m antennas, with baselines ranging from 22 m to 6 km, ASKAP also has excellent snapshot imaging capability and 10 arcsec resolution. This, combined with 288 MHz of instantaneous bandwidth and a unique third axis of rotation on each antenna, gives ASKAP the capability to create high dynamic range images of large sky areas very quickly. It is an excellent telescope for surveys between 700 and $1800\,\textrm{MHz}$ and is expected to facilitate great advances in our understanding of galaxy formation, cosmology, and radio transients while opening new parameter space for discovery of the unknown.

Vanadium Oxide has application to infrared bolometers due to high temperature coefficient of resistivity (TCR). It has attracted interest for switchable plasmonic devices due to its metal to insulator transition near room temperature. We report here the properties of vanadium oxide deposited by an aqueous spray process. The films have a ropy surface morphology with ∼70 nm surface roughness. The polycrystalline phase depends on annealing conditions. The films have TCR of ∼2%/deg, which compares well with sputtered films. Only weak evidence is found for an insulator-metal phase transition in these films.

Ternary lead chalcogenides, such as PbSxSe1-x, offer the possibility of room-temperature infrared detection with engineered cut-off wavelengths within the important 3-5 micron mid-wave infrared (MWIR) wavelength range. We present growth and characterization of aqueous spray-deposited thin films of PbSSe. Complexing agents in the aqueous medium suppress unwanted homogeneous reactions so that growth occurs only by the heterogeneous reaction on the hydrophilic substrate. The strongly-adherent films are smooth with a mirror-like finish. The films comprise densely packed grains with tens of nm dimensions and a total film thickness of ∼400-500 nm. Measured optical constants reveal absorption out to at least 4.5 μm wavelength and a ∼0.3 eV bandgap intermediate between those of PbS and PbSe. The semiconducting films are p-type with resistivity ∼1 and 85 Ohm-cm at 300 and 80 K, respectively. Sharp x-ray diffraction peaks identify the films as Clausthalite-Galena solid-state solution with a lattice constant that indicates an even mixture of PbS and PbSe. The photoconductive response is observed at both nitrogen and room temperature up to at least 2 kHz chopping frequency.

Self-assembled TiO2 films deposited by aqueous-spray deposition were investigated to evaluate morphology, crystalline phase, and infrared optical constants. The Anatase nano-crystalline film had ∼10 nm characteristic surface roughness sparsely punctuated by defects of not more than 200 nm amplitude. The film is highly transparent throughout the visible to wavelengths of 12 μm. The indirect band gap was determined to be 3.2 eV. Important for long-wave infrared applications is that dispersion in this region is weak compared with the more commonly used dielectric SiO2 for planar structures. An example application to a metal-insulator-metal resonant absorber is presented. The low-cost, large-area, atmospheric-pressure, chemical spray deposition method allows conformal fabrication on flexible substrates for long-wave infrared photonics.

Emerging research indicates the critical role members of the public can play in saving lives and reducing morbidity at the scene in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. It is anticipated that with training, more members of the public will be ready and able to assist should they be present at mass casualty events or other circumstances in which there are serious injuries or potential loss of life. This article describes a training course developed by multiple federal and nonfederal partners aimed at preparing the public to become “active bystanders” followed by a pilot demonstration project conducted by Medical Reserve Corps Units. The outcomes of the project indicated that the training was comprehensive and appropriate for members of the public with little or no first aid knowledge. National availability of the “Becoming an Active Bystander” training course is currently being planned. (Disaster Med Public Health Preparedness. 2016;10:286–292).

The apple leaf midge, Dasineura mali (Kieffer), is an apple pest in Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley (Rogers 1991). Larval D. mali are specialist, leaf-feeding pests that attack primarily young pubescent apple shoots. Larval feeding induces the leaves to curl tightly toward the midrib and form distinctive reddish galls that desiccate following larval exit. Economic damage to orchards in Annapolis Valley has not been estimated, but immature trees and nursery stock are vulnerable because new growth is essential for proper tree formation (Rogers 1991).

The apple brown bug, Atractotomus mali (Meyer), is an economic pest of apple in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia (Rogers 1990). Feeding on developing fruit of sensitive apple varieties induces persistent corky scar tissue that reduces the quality of affected fruit. Forty-five percent of Annapolis Valley apple orchards monitored in 1992 required chemical insecticide applications to control the pest complex of A. mali and the mullein bug, Campylomma verbasci (Meyer) (Craig 1992).
Female-produced sex pheromones occur in several mirid species, including the mullein bug (Smith et al. 1991) and Lygocoris communis (Knight) (Boivin and Stewart 1982). The sex pheromone of C. verbasci has been identified as a 16: 1 blend of butyl butyrate and crotyl butyrate (Smith et al. 1991). Our objective was to determine if a sex pheromone occurs in A. mali.

We present photometry and spectroscopy of the peculiar Type II supernova SN 2010jp, also named PTF10aaxi. The light curve exhibits a linear decline with a relatively low peak absolute magnitude of only −15.9 (unfiltered), and a low radioactive decay luminosity at late times that suggests a low synthesized nickel mass of about 0.003 M⊙ or less. Spectra of SN 2010jp display an unprecedented triple-peaked Hα line profile, showing: (1) a narrow central component that suggests shock interaction with a dense circumstellar medium (CSM); (2) high-velocity blue and red emission features centered at −12,600 and +15,400 km s−1; and (3) very broad wings extending from −22,000 to +25,000 km s−1. We propose that this line profile indicates a bipolar jet-driven explosion, with the central component produced by normal SN ejecta and CSM interaction at mid and low latitudes, while the high-velocity bumps and broad line wings arise in a nonrelativistic bipolar jet. Jet-driven SNe II are predicted for collapsars resulting from a wide range of initial masses above 25 M⊙, especially at the sub-solar metallicity consistent with the SN host environment. It also seems consistent with the apparently low 56Ni mass that may accompany black hole formation. We speculate that the jet survives to produce observable signatures because the star's H envelope was very low mass, having been mostly stripped away by the previous eruptive mass loss.

Context.
Healthcare data suggest that the incidence and severity of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) in hospitals are increasing. However, the overall burden of disease and the mortality rate associated with CDI, including the contribution from cases of infection that occur in nursing homes, are poorly understood.
Objective. To describe the epidemiology, disease burden, and mortality rate of healthcare-onset CDI.
Methods. In 2006, active public reporting of healthcare-onset CDI, using standardized case definitions, was mandated for all Ohio hospitals and nursing homes. Incidence rates were determined and stratified according to healthcare facility characteristics. Death certificates that listed CDI were analyzed for trends.
Results. There were 14,329 CDI cases reported, including 6,376 cases at 210 hospitals (5,217 initial cases [ie, cases identified more than 48 hours after admission to a healthcare facility in patients who had not had CDI during the previous 6 months] and 1,159 recurrent cases [ie, cases involving patients who had had CDI during the previous 6 months]) and 7,953 cases at 955 nursing homes (4,880 initial and 3,073 recurrent cases). After adjusting for missing data, the estimated total was 18,200 cases of CDI, which included 7,000 hospital cases (5,700 initial and 1,300 recurrent cases) and 11,200 nursing homes cases (6,900 initial and 4,300 recurrent cases). The rate for initial cases was 6.4-7.9 cases/10,000 patient-days for hospitals and 1.7-2.9 cases/10,000 patient-days for nursing homes. The rate for initial cases in nursing homes decreased during the study (P < .001). Nonpediatric hospital status (P = .011), a smaller number of beds (P = .003), and location in the eastern or northeastern region of the state (P = .011) were each independently associated with a higher rate of initial cases in hospitals. Death certificates for 2006 listed CDI among the causes of death for 893 Ohio residents; between 2000 and 2006, this number increased more than 4-fold.
Conclusion.Healthcare-onset CDI represents a major public health threat that, when considered in the context of an increasing mortality rate, should justify a major focus on prevention efforts.

This comprehensive textbook, now fully revised, rewritten and updated in its fourth edition, provides an authoritative account of all aspects of perioperative care for surgical patients. All areas of medical disease are discussed with clear recommendations for work up and management in the perioperative period. Basic discussions of surgical procedures are included to help non-surgeons understand the procedures and their implications for patient care. This definitive account includes numerous contributions from leading experts at national centers of medical excellence. It will serve as a significant work of reference for internists, anesthesiologists and surgeons.
