Although knowledge of their fossil record continues to improve, multituberculates nonetheless remain one of the more poorly understood mammalian clades, which can be attributed to a record comprised of isolated teeth and fragmentary jaws. Fortunately, the p4 of multituberculates is the most common form of remains for this group and is a principal source of diagnostic characters in systematic studies, the p4 of cimolodontan multituberculates is both common and a source of diagnostic characters in systematic studies. The results of a recent morphometric study on the neoplagiaulacid Mesodma suggest that p4 size may be more useful than shape in diagnosing the various species referred to this genus. We tested this hypothesis by applying two different morphometric methods (2D geometric morphometrics and linear measurements) to two samples: (1) one including the p4s of four known species of Mesodma (M. ambigua, M. thompsoni, M. formosa, and M. pygmaea), and (2) a sample of unidentified p4s of Mesodma from the Bug Creek Anthills locality of northeastern Montana. Our results indicate that while form explains most of the morphological variation in p4s of the various species of Mesodma, linear-measurement data support differences in p4 morphology that are not recovered by form data alone. Depending on the methods used, we found evidence for the presence of one or more species of Mesodma in the Bug Creek Anthills fauna. Although shape and size both contribute to morphological variation in the p4 of Mesodma, our results suggest that the diagnostic power of each varies with the type of methodology employed.

Despite nonoverlapping diagnostic criteria, internalizing and externalizing disorders show substantial comorbidity. This comorbidity is attributable, at least in part, to transdiagnostic neuroaffective mechanisms. Both unipolar depression and externalizing disorders are characterized by structural and functional compromises in the striatum and its projections to the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and other frontal regions. Smaller volumes and dampened reward responding in these regions are associated with anhedonia and irritability – mood states that cut across the internalizing and externalizing spectra. In contrast, smaller amygdala volumes and dampened amygdala function differentiate externalizing disorders from internalizing disorders. Little is known, however, about associations between internalizing–externalizing comorbidity and brain volumes in these regions, or whether such patterns differ by sex. Using a transdiagnostic, research domain criteria (RDoC)-informed approach, we evaluate associations between heterotypic (Internalizing × Externalizing) symptom interactions and striatal, amygdalar, and ACC volumes among participants in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study (N = 6,971, mean age 9.9 years, 51.6% female). Heterotypic symptoms were associated with ACC volumes for both sexes, over and above the main effects of internalizing and externalizing alone. However, heterotypic comorbidity was associated with larger ACC volumes for girls, but with smaller ACC volumes for boys. These findings suggest a need for further studies and transdiagnostic assessment by sex.

Bengal dayflower (also known as tropical spiderwort) is one of the most troublesome weeds in peanut in Georgia, United States. Field studies conducted in 2004 and 2005 evaluated the relationship between the duration of Bengal dayflower interference and peanut yield in an effort to optimize the timing of weed control. In 2004, the critical period of weed control (CPWC) necessary to avoid greater than 5% peanut yield loss was between 316 and 607 growing degree days (GDD), which corresponded to an interval between June 8 and July 2. In 2005, the CPWC ranged from 185 to 547 GDD, an interval between May 30 and July 3. Maximum yield loss in 2005 from season-long interference of Bengal dayflower was 51%. In 2004, production of peanut pods was eliminated by interference with Bengal dayflower for the initial 6 wk (495 GDD) of the growing season. Robust Bengal dayflower growth in 2004 shaded the peanut crop, likely intercepting fungicide applications and causing a reduction in peanut yield. Therefore, the competitive effects of Bengal dayflower are likely complicated with the activity of plant pathogens. In spite of higher Bengal dayflower population densities, greater Bengal dayflower growth, and greater peanut yield losses in 2004 than in 2005, the CPWC was a relatively similar 4-wk period that ended during the first week of July, for peanut that was planted in the first week of May.

Observations are reported on the growth of vortices in the vortex sheets bounding the jet emerging from a sharp-edged two-dimensional slit and from a sharp-edged circular orifice. A regular periodic flow is observed near the orifice for both configurations when the Reynolds number of the jet lies between about 500 and 3000. The two-dimensional jet produces a symmetric pattern of vortex pairs with a Strouhal number of 0·43. Vortex rings are formed in the circular jet with a Strouhal number of 0·63. Computer experiments show that a growing pair of vortices in two parallel vortex sheets produces a symmetric pattern of vortices upstream from the original disturbance.

An investigation of the mechanism responsible for the self-excited oscillations of a harmonium reed is presented. Experiments show that the amplitude of vibration of the reed grows exponentially, and measurements of the growth rate as a function of the flow past the reed are reported. Flow visualization studies lead to the conclusion that jet or wake instability is not important in exciting the reed vibration. An analysis of the flow around the reed as an unsteady potential flow results in the evaluation of the aerodynamic forces exciting the reed. The analysis shows that the pressure which excites the reed motion is of the order of $\rho U_0\dot{a}$, where U0 is the flow velocity and $\dot{a}$ is the reed velocity.
