Background
Racial/ethnic differences in mental health outcomes after a traumatic event have been reported. Less is known about factors that explain these differences. We examined whether pre-, peri-, and post-trauma risk factors explained racial/ethnic differences in acute and longer-term posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety symptoms in patients hospitalized following traumatic injury or illness.
MethodsPTSD, depression, and anxiety symptoms were assessed during hospitalization and 2 and 6 months later among 1310 adult patients (6.95% Asian, 14.96% Latinx, 23.66% Black, 4.58% multiracial, and 49.85% White). Individual growth curve models examined racial/ethnic differences in PTSD, depression, and anxiety symptoms at each time point and in their rate of change over time, and whether pre-, peri-, and post-trauma risk factors explained these differences.
ResultsLatinx, Black, and multiracial patients had higher acute PTSD symptoms than White patients, which remained higher 2 and 6 months post-hospitalization for Black and multiracial patients. PTSD symptoms were also found to improve faster among Latinx than White patients. Risk factors accounted for most racial/ethnic differences, although Latinx patients showed lower 6-month PTSD symptoms and Black patients lower acute and 2-month depression and anxiety symptoms after accounting for risk factors. Everyday discrimination, financial stress, past mental health problems, and social constraints were related to these differences.
ConclusionRacial/ethnic differences in risk factors explained most differences in acute and longer-term PTSD, depression, and anxiety symptoms. Understanding how these risk factors relate to posttraumatic symptoms could help reduce disparities by facilitating early identification of patients at risk for mental health problems.

Summary
This volume is a selection of essays taken from the excellent range of papers presented at the British Legal History Conference hosted by the Institute for Legal and Constitutional Research at the University of St Andrews, 10–13 July 2019. The theme of the conference gives this book its title: ‘comparative legal history’. The topic came easily to the organisers because of their association with the St Andrews-based European Research Council Advanced grant project ‘Civil law, common law, customary law: consonance, divergence and transformation in Western Europe from the late eleventh to the thirteenth centuries’. But the chosen topic was also connected to the fact that this was, we think, the first British Legal History Conference held at a university without a Law faculty. Bearing in mind the question of how far institutional setting determines approach, our hope was that an element of fruitful comparison would stimulate people to think further about the range of approaches to legal history. With its explicit agenda of breaking down barriers, comparative legal history provided a particularly suitable focus for this investigation. After situating the subject matter of comparative legal history, and then discussing the levels of comparison that may be most fertile, this introduction moves on to considering the practical tasks of researching and writing such history, using the essays included in the volume to suggest ways ahead. The introduction groups the essays under certain headings: ‘Exploring legal transplants’; ‘Investigating broader geographical areas’; ‘Case law, precedent and relationships between legal systems’; and ‘Exploring past comparativists and the challenges of writing comparative legal history’. Yet the essays could be kaleidoscopically rearranged under many headings. We hope that the book, like a successful conference, includes many stimulating conversations.

Common Law, Civil Law, and Colonial Law builds upon the legal historian F.W. Maitland's famous observation that history involves comparison, and that those who ignore every system but their own 'hardly came in sight of the idea of legal history'. The extensive introduction addresses the intellectual challenges posed by comparative approaches to legal history. This is followed by twelve essays derived from papers delivered at the 24th British Legal History Conference. These essays explore patterns in legal norms, processes, and practice across an exceptionally broad chronological and geographical range. Carefully selected to provide a network of inter-connections, they contribute to our better understanding of legal history by combining depth of analysis with historical contextualization. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

There is increasing emphasis on the need for effective ways of sharing knowledge to enhance environmental management and sustainability. Knowledge exchange (KE) are processes that generate, share and/or use knowledge through various methods appropriate to the context, purpose, and participants involved. KE includes concepts such as sharing, generation, coproduction, comanagement, and brokerage of knowledge. This paper elicits the expert knowledge of academics involved in research and practice of KE from different disciplines and backgrounds to review research themes, identify gaps and questions, and develop a research agenda for furthering understanding about KE. Results include 80 research questions prefaced by a review of research themes. Key conclusions are: (1) there is a diverse range of questions relating to KE that require attention; (2) there is a particular need for research on understanding the process of KE and how KE can be evaluated; and (3) given the strong interdependency of research questions, an integrated approach to understanding KE is required. To improve understanding of KE, action research methodologies and embedding evaluation as a normal part of KE research and practice need to be encouraged. This will foster more adaptive approaches to learning about KE and enhance effectiveness of environmental management.

Summary
For many early adolescents, friendship functions as a centerpiece of daily experience. Early adolescents spend time and interact with their friends in environments that are real, electronic, or virtual. Together they share a range of experiences including achievement-related and social events at school, the affective ups and downs associated with family life, and the multifaceted experiences associated with adjusting to new freedoms and new internal states and desires. The importance of friendship during this period has not been lost on writers and filmmakers. The best known works of fiction about early adolescents typically tell a story about how a person of this age makes his or her way through life in the company of his or her friends. The Harry Potter stories are the best examples of this genre of literature. Millions and millions of readers have been captivated by the stories of the experiences that Harry shares with his friends – Ron and Hermoine – at their school. These stories, and many others, are exemplary in their depictions of the challenges and opportunities associated with friendship for early adolescent boys and girls.
The challenges and opportunities posed by friendship in early adolescence have been well recognized by developmental psychologists. Research on friendship has been a mainstay of research on social development for more than a century (Bukowski & Sippola, 2005). This research has been motivated by multiple interests. Three research goals have been especially prominent: (a) to identify what friendship consists of, (b) to assess how friendship affects development and well-being, and (c) to examine the intersection between friendship and risk status. Attention has been devoted to each of these goals. Insofar as one needs to know what one is studying before it can be measured in a way that would reveal its developmental significance, attempts to identify the features of friendship have typically preceded efforts to identify the effects of friendship and its association with risk. Accordingly these three research streams have not run completely in parallel. Instead, research on the features of friendship has preceded research on the general effects of friendship, which, in turn has informed research on friendship and risk.

The Vestimentifera, or deep-sea tube worms, comprise an ecologically and anatomically unusual group of marine invertebrates, with poorly understood biogeography, ecology, phylogenetic affinities and evolutionary radiation. To gain insight into evolutionary diversification within the group, we have used a molecular biological approach. We report the cloning of a region of 28S ribosomal DNA from representatives of five vestimentiferan genera plus, for comparison, a polychaete and a perviate pogonophore. Phylogenetic analyses using these DNA sequences confirm that Ridgeia and Tevnia are closely related genera. The analyses also lead us to propose the hypothesis that the earliest vestimentiferan lineage to diverge gave rise to the genus Lamellibrachia only. In addition, our comparative DNA sequence data now provide a means to use molecular methods for identification of deep-sea tube worms; we employed this approach to demonstrate that the first vestimentiferan specimen from the eastern Atlantic Ocean belongs to the genus Lamellibrachia. DNA-based identification should have wide applications in the study of vestimentiferan biogeography and ecology.

Cancellous bone plays a crucial structural role in the skeleton, yet little is known about the microstructure-mechanical property relationships of the tissue at the microscale. Cancellous tissue is characterized by a microstructure consisting of layers interspaced with transition zones with different proportions of collagen and mineral. In this study, the quasistatic and dynamic mechanical properties of lamellar and interlamellar tissue in human vertebrae were assessed with nanoindentation, and the collagen content and organization were characterized with second harmonic generation microscopy. Lamellar tissue was 35% stiffer, 25% harder, and had a 13% lower loss tangent relative to interlamellar tissue. The stiff, hard lamellae corresponded to areas of highly ordered, collagen-rich material, with a relatively low loss tangent, whereas the compliant, soft interlamellar regions corresponded to areas of disordered or collagen-poor material. These data suggest an important role for collagen in the tissue-level mechanical properties of bone.

Cancellous bone plays an important load-bearing role in the skeleton, yet relatively little is known about the microstructure-mechanical property relationships of the tissue at the sub-10 [.proportional]m level. Cancellous tissue is characterized by a layered microstructure with variable proportions of collagen and mineral. The lamellar material is substantially stiffer than the interlamellar material at the nanomechanical level. However, the microstructural origin of the observed differences in mechanical properties of these structures has not been investigated. In this study, second harmonic generation microscopy was used to examine collagen in human vertebral cancellous bone. At the same location in the tissue, nanoindentation was used to assess the indentation modulus of lamellar and interlamellar bone. The stiff lamellae corresponded to areas of highly ordered, collagen-rich material, while the compliant interlamellar regions corresponded to areas of unoriented or collagen-poor material. The lamellar bone was approximately 30% stiffer and contained approximately 50% more oriented collagen than the interlamellar bone. These observed differences in the mechanical properties and collagen content and organization of lamellar and interlamellar tissue are consistent with previous scanning electron microscopy studies showing greater mineral and collagen content and organization in lamellar bone. Given the well-known coupling between collagen and mineral in bone tissue, the mineral distribution may mirror that of the aligned collagen. However, similar measurements of local variations in mineral content are needed to confirm this hypothesis and may provide additional insights into the tissue nanomechanical behavior.
