Minor depression is diagnosed when a patient suffers from two to four depressive symptoms for at least two weeks. Though minor depression is a widespread phenomenon, its pathophysiology has hardly been studied. To get a first insight into the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying this disorder we assessed serum levels of biomarkers for plasticity, glial and neuronal function: brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), S100B and neuron specific enolase (NSE). Twenty-seven subjects with minor depressive episode and 82 healthy subjects over 60 years of age were selected from the database of the Leipzig population-based study of civilization diseases (LIFE). Serum levels of BDNF, S100B and NSE were compared between groups, and correlated with age, body-mass index, and degree of white matter hyperintensities (score on Fazekas scale). S100B was significantly increased in males with minor depression in comparison to healthy males, whereas other biomarkers did not differ between groups (P = 0.10–0.66). NSE correlated with Fazekas score in patients with minor depression (rs = 0.436, P = 0.048) and in the whole sample (rs = 0.252, P = 0.019). S100B correlated with body mass index (rs = 0.246, P = 0.031) and with age in healthy subjects (rs = 0.345, P = 0.002). Increased S100B in males with minor depression, without alterations in BDNF and NSE, supports the glial hypothesis of depression. Correlation between white matter hyperintensities and NSE underscores the vascular hypothesis of late life depression.

Aspects of the life history and population dynamics of the Platte thistle (Cirsium canescens Nutt.), a rangeland weed, were studied in the Nebraska Sandhills from 1977 through 1979. This thistle is a monocarpic perennial, reproducing only by seed production, which typically occurs in small, scattered groups of plants. Seedling mortality at four sites was 75% during the first year, mostly because of dry moisture conditions. In plots with good vegetative cover, thistle rosette plants had a lower mortality rate, but growth rate was slower than that of rosette plants in plots with sparse vegetative cover. Seed heads developed during May and June and gained more than one-half of their dry weight shortly before maturing. Plants averaged 72, 197, and 303 seeds at three sites. Within sites, plants produced seeds in proportion to the number of seed heads per plant. Although naturally occurring biological-control agents have little effect on the vegetative growth phase of the life cycle, they greatly reduce the production of seeds.

Three musk thistle (Carduus thoermeri Weinm.) sites that were infested with a weevil (Rhinocyllus conicus Froel.) and a fourth non-infested site were evaluated for numbers of insects and seeds per seed head. At four successive weekly intervals, seed heads were sampled just after flowering. Initial sampling was in 1978 and was repeated in 1979. Weevil incidence in heads blooming during the first week was 6.7/head in 1978 and 28.0 in 1979. At infested sites, production of fully developed seeds averaged 28% less than at the non-infested site in 1978 and 78% less in 1979. Heads that were in bloom during the fourth sampling week had an infestation rate less than one weevil/head in both years. Fully developed seeds germinated well (96 to 99%) and were not affected by date of bloom. Because many heads bloomed during the third and fourth weeks, a large number of viable seeds were still produced at infested sites.

Objective:
This study aimed to: assess the mucosal alterations of the larynx and hypopharynx typical for mucopolysaccharidoses, in a standardised manner; compare the severity in different subtypes of mucopolysaccharidoses; and monitor the effect of an enzyme replacement therapy.
Methods:A classification for mucosal alterations of the larynx and hypopharynx was developed and utilised in 55 patients with mucopolysaccharidoses. Fifteen patients who started treatment with enzyme replacement therapy were followed longitudinally.
Results:The most severe alterations were seen in the posterior region of the larynx and the arytenoids, and in the region of the false vocal folds. The alterations were most severe in patients with mucopolysaccharidosis II. No clear trend was observed in the patients who received enzyme replacement therapy.
Conclusion:Quantification of mucosal alterations of the hypopharynx and larynx in mucopolysaccharidoses patients can provide information about the disease's natural process and about the efficacy of enzyme replacement therapy.

Summary
Introduction
The illegal trade in tobacco products is a phenomenon that only recently has gained some prominence despite the fact that it has a much longer history. There are three main schemes characterising this trade in the last two decades: (1) bootlegging: buying an amount of cigarettes that exceeds custom regulations, (2) large-scale smuggling of untaxed cigarettes diverted from licit international trade and (3) counterfeiting or manufacturing of fake brand cigarettes (Joossens 1999; von Lampe 2006). This chapter focuses on the third scheme and aims at providing an account of the social organisation of the counterfeiting business in the People's Republic of China (hereinafter, China), generally believed to be the main source for counterfeit cigarettes worldwide. According to recent estimates, up to 400 billion counterfeit cigarettes are produced in China per year (Chen 2009; Joossens, Merriman, Ross and Raw 2009), representing roughly the number of cigarettes (legal and contraband) consumed in the United Kingdom over a six-year period. China has criminalised cigarette counterfeiting through a net of general and specific laws and regulations. Section 140 (chapter 3) of the Chinese Criminal Law of 1997 has made the production and trade of counterfeit goods in general an “Offence that Undermines the Socialist Market Economy’ punishable by a range of possible sentences from a financial penalty to life imprisonment. In addition, the Chinese Law of Tobacco Exclusive Sale stipulates that legal traders who sell counterfeit tobacco products must be fined at 50 per cent of the market value of the counterfeit products seized.

Background
Although attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is thought to be an inhibitory disorder, the question remains of how specific the inhibitory deficit is in adults and whether it distinguishes ADHD from borderline personality disorder (BPD), with which it shares several clinical features, particularly impulsiveness.
MethodThe study assessed various motor and cognitive inhibitory functions (inhibition of prepotent, ongoing and interfering responses) in addition to working memory in adult ADHD patients with and without BPD, compared to subjects with BPD alone and controls. In addition, questionnaire data on various aspects of impulsiveness and anger regulation were assessed in all groups.
ResultsADHD patients performed worse than BPD individuals and controls in two inhibitory tasks: the stop signal task and the conflict module of the Attentional Network Task (ANT). In addition, they exhibited longer reaction times (RTs) and higher intra-individual variance in nearly all attentional tasks. The co-morbid group exhibited poor performance on the stop signal task but not on the conflict task. The BPD group barely differed from controls in neuropsychological performance but overlapped with ADHD in some behavioural problems, although they were less severe on the whole.
ConclusionsImpaired inhibition is a core feature in adults with ADHD. In addition, slow RTs and high intra-individual variance in performance may reflect deficits in the regulation of activation and effort in ADHD patients. ADHD and BPD share some symptoms of behavioural dysregulation without common cognitive deficits, at least in the attentional realm.
Selected nutritional biomarkers predict diet quality

Objective:
To examine associations of biomarkers of nutrient intake with overall diet quality.
Subjects:A convenience sample of 102 healthy postmenopausal women in Seattle, Washington (USA).
Design and method:Participants attended a study centre where they provided fasting blood specimens and completed a 122-item validated food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Data from the FFQ were used to calculate Diet Quality Index (DQI) scores and categorise women as having diets of excellent, good, fair or poor quality. The blood specimens were analysed for nine phospholipid fatty acids (as percentage of total) and serum concentrations of vitamin C, α-tocopherol, γ-tocopherol, vitamin B12, folate and six carotenoids. Multivariate linear regression was used to model associations of the nutrient biomarkers with DQI scores.
Results:Compared with women with poor-quality diets, women with excellent diets, as measured by the DQI, had higher plasma concentrations of vitamin C (P for trend = 0.01), α-tocopherol (P for trend = 0.02) and β-cryptoxanthin (P for trend = 0.03). Women with excellent diets also had lower proportions of plasma phospholipid fatty acids of two potentially atherogenic fatty acids: stearic acid (P for trend = 0.01) and behenic acid (P for trend = 0.03). A group of six biomarkers explained a moderate proportion of the total variability in DQI scores (36%).
Conclusions:These objective measures of dietary intake support the use of the DQI as a useful tool to measure dietary patterns.
High concordance of daidzein-metabolizing phenotypes in individuals measured 1 to 3 years apart

Particular intestinal bacteria are capable of metabolizing the soya isoflavone daidzein to equol and/or O-desmethylangolensin (O-DMA), and the presence of these metabolites in urine after soya consumption are markers of particular intestinal bacteria profiles. Prevalences of equol producers and O-DMA producers are approximately 30–50 % and 80–90 %, respectively, and limited observations have suggested that these daidzein-metabolizing phenotypes are stable within individuals over time. Characterizing stability of these phenotypes is important to understand their potential as markers of long-term exposure to particular intestinal bacteria and their associations with disease risk. We evaluated concordance within an individual for the equol-producer and O-DMA-producer phenotypes measured at two time points (T1, T2), 1–3 years apart. Phenotypes were ascertained by analysing equol and O-DMA using GC-MS in a spot urine sample collected after 3 d soya (source of daidzein) supplementation. In ninety-two individuals without recent (within 3 months before phenotyping) or current antibiotics use, 41 % were equol producers at T1 and 45 % were equol producers at T2, and 90 % were O-DMA producers at T1 and 95 % were O-DMA producers at T2. The percentage agreement for the equol-producer phenotype was 82 and for the O-DMA-producer phenotype was 89. These results indicate that these phenotypes are stable in most individuals over time, suggesting that they provide a useful biomarker for evaluating disease risk associated with harbouring particular intestinal bacteria responsible for, or associated with, the metabolism of the soya isoflavone daidzein.
Is apathy in late-life depressive illness related to age-at-onset, cognitive function or vascular risk?

Background: Apathy has been shown to be an important feature of degenerative, vascular or traumatic brain disorder. Its presence is associated with high depression scores, higher age, low performance on frontal tasks, and more severe deep white matter hyperintensities. In late-life depression, lack of interest or motivation are often more prominent than depressed mood, especially in the late-onset type. It was hypothesized that in a heterogeneous sample of elderly depressed patients, apathy is associated with late-onset type of depression, cognitive dysfunction or vascular risk factors.
Method: The Apathy Evaluation Scale (AES) was administered to twenty-nine elderly (≥60 years) inpatients with a DSM-IV major depression or dysthymic disorder. The severity of the depression was measured with the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) and cognitive function with the Mini-mental State Examination (MMSE). The presence of vascular risk factors was traced in the patient's medical records.
Results: Apathy was found in 86% of the patients. The AES-score was correlated with the negative symptom score, but not with total MADRS or MMSE-score. No difference in AES-score between early-onset depressed (n = 16) and late-onset depressed (n = 13) patients was found, and between patients with or without vascular risk.
Conclusion: Apathy is a main feature of moderate to severe depressive illness in elderly patients and related to the negative symptoms of the disorder. Further studies should include less severely depressed patients and investigate the relation between depression severity and apathy.

Eko Stahl installed a roll gap lubrication system in stands F2-F4 of its HSM in 2001. The main objectives were energy saving, reduction of roll wear and vibration. The paper describes the equipment and its startup, the consequences of roll gap lubrication, looper angles and AGC, the cost saving results by energy saving and roll wear reduction. The influence on surface quality and environment is described as well as the ongoing optimization process.

Connexins oligomerize into hemichannels, traffic to the cell surface and dock with hemichannels from an adjacent cell to form intercellular gap junction channels. Pulsechase studies have revealed that connexins are subject to a short half-life ranging from 1- 5 hrs. To examine the mechanisms involved in connexin trafficking, gap junction assembly and internalization in living cells we fused green fluorescent protein (GFP) to the amino or carboxyl terminus of full length connexins (Cx). When cDNA encoding Cx43-GFP was transfected into communication-competent NRK cells, Cx43-negative MDCK cells, or communication-deficient Neuro2A or HeLa cells, the fusion protein of predicted length was expressed, transported, and assembled into functional gap junctions (Figure 1). Most notably, the fusion of GFP to the amino terminal of Cx43 (GFP-Cx43) or Cx32 (GFP-Cx32) did not inhibit the co-translational insertion of these polytopic type IV connexins into the membrane and as a result gap junction plaques assembled at cellcell interfaces.
