Background
Studying phenotypic and genetic characteristics of age at onset (AAO) and polarity at onset (PAO) in bipolar disorder can provide new insights into disease pathology and facilitate the development of screening tools.
AimsTo examine the genetic architecture of AAO and PAO and their association with bipolar disorder disease characteristics.
MethodGenome-wide association studies (GWASs) and polygenic score (PGS) analyses of AAO (n = 12 977) and PAO (n = 6773) were conducted in patients with bipolar disorder from 34 cohorts and a replication sample (n = 2237). The association of onset with disease characteristics was investigated in two of these cohorts.
ResultsEarlier AAO was associated with a higher probability of psychotic symptoms, suicidality, lower educational attainment, not living together and fewer episodes. Depressive onset correlated with suicidality and manic onset correlated with delusions and manic episodes. Systematic differences in AAO between cohorts and continents of origin were observed. This was also reflected in single-nucleotide variant-based heritability estimates, with higher heritabilities for stricter onset definitions. Increased PGS for autism spectrum disorder (β = −0.34 years, s.e. = 0.08), major depression (β = −0.34 years, s.e. = 0.08), schizophrenia (β = −0.39 years, s.e. = 0.08), and educational attainment (β = −0.31 years, s.e. = 0.08) were associated with an earlier AAO. The AAO GWAS identified one significant locus, but this finding did not replicate. Neither GWAS nor PGS analyses yielded significant associations with PAO.
ConclusionsAAO and PAO are associated with indicators of bipolar disorder severity. Individuals with an earlier onset show an increased polygenic liability for a broad spectrum of psychiatric traits. Systematic differences in AAO across cohorts, continents and phenotype definitions introduce significant heterogeneity, affecting analyses.

Background
Childhood maltreatment is one of the strongest predictors of adulthood depression and alterations to circulating levels of inflammatory markers is one putative mechanism mediating risk or resilience.
AimsTo determine the effects of childhood maltreatment on circulating levels of 41 inflammatory markers in healthy individuals and those with a major depressive disorder (MDD) diagnosis.
MethodWe investigated the association of childhood maltreatment with levels of 41 inflammatory markers in two groups, 164 patients with MDD and 301 controls, using multiplex electrochemiluminescence methods applied to blood serum.
ResultsChildhood maltreatment was not associated with altered inflammatory markers in either group after multiple testing correction. Body mass index (BMI) exerted strong effects on interleukin-6 and C-reactive protein levels in those with MDD.
ConclusionsChildhood maltreatment did not exert effects on inflammatory marker levels in either the participants with MDD or the control group in our study. Our results instead highlight the more pertinent influence of BMI.

Seven half-day regional listening sessions were held between December 2016 and April 2017 with groups of diverse stakeholders on the issues and potential solutions for herbicide-resistance management. The objective of the listening sessions was to connect with stakeholders and hear their challenges and recommendations for addressing herbicide resistance. The coordinating team hired Strategic Conservation Solutions, LLC, to facilitate all the sessions. They and the coordinating team used in-person meetings, teleconferences, and email to communicate and coordinate the activities leading up to each regional listening session. The agenda was the same across all sessions and included small-group discussions followed by reporting to the full group for discussion. The planning process was the same across all the sessions, although the selection of venue, time of day, and stakeholder participants differed to accommodate the differences among regions. The listening-session format required a great deal of work and flexibility on the part of the coordinating team and regional coordinators. Overall, the participant evaluations from the sessions were positive, with participants expressing appreciation that they were asked for their thoughts on the subject of herbicide resistance. This paper details the methods and processes used to conduct these regional listening sessions and provides an assessment of the strengths and limitations of those processes.

Herbicide resistance is ‘wicked’ in nature; therefore, results of the many educational efforts to encourage diversification of weed control practices in the United States have been mixed. It is clear that we do not sufficiently understand the totality of the grassroots obstacles, concerns, challenges, and specific solutions needed for varied crop production systems. Weed management issues and solutions vary with such variables as management styles, regions, cropping systems, and available or affordable technologies. Therefore, to help the weed science community better understand the needs and ideas of those directly dealing with herbicide resistance, seven half-day regional listening sessions were held across the United States between December 2016 and April 2017 with groups of diverse stakeholders on the issues and potential solutions for herbicide resistance management. The major goals of the sessions were to gain an understanding of stakeholders and their goals and concerns related to herbicide resistance management, to become familiar with regional differences, and to identify decision maker needs to address herbicide resistance. The messages shared by listening-session participants could be summarized by six themes: we need new herbicides; there is no need for more regulation; there is a need for more education, especially for others who were not present; diversity is hard; the agricultural economy makes it difficult to make changes; and we are aware of herbicide resistance but are managing it. The authors concluded that more work is needed to bring a community-wide, interdisciplinary approach to understanding the complexity of managing weeds within the context of the whole farm operation and for communicating the need to address herbicide resistance.

Field experiments were conducted in 1997 and 1998 near Columbia and Novelty, MO, and at Urbana, IL, to evaluate corn injury, weed control, corn yield, and estimated economic returns with weed management programs in glufosinate-resistant corn. Herbicide programs included acetochlor preemergence (PRE) followed by glufosinate alone or with atrazine postemergence (POST) and total POST programs consisting of single and sequential applications of glufosinate alone or tank mixed with acetochlor, atrazine, or acetochlor plus atrazine. Metolachlor PRE followed by dicamba plus atrazine early POST (EPOST) and metolachlor plus atrazine PRE were included for comparison. In the total POST treatments, mid-POST applications controlled shattercane and common cocklebur better than EPOST applications. However, yield reductions as high as 23% occurred because of early-season weed interference, although weeds were controlled later in the season. Applying atrazine with glufosinate generally increased control of giant foxtail, common cocklebur, morningglory species, and common waterhemp compared to glufosinate alone, but did not increase control of common lambsquarters, velvetleaf, or Pennsylvania smartweed. Corn yield was positively correlated with weed control (r = 0.88) and more strongly dependent on grass (r = 0.82) than broadleaf (r = 0.70) weed control. Net incomes were positively correlated to corn yield (r = 0.73). Four of the top six net income-producing treatments included two herbicide applications. Three of the treatments were PRE followed by POST programs, and the fourth was a sequential POST treatment of glufosinate.

Field experiments were conducted in 1997 and 1998 near Columbia and Novelty, MO, and Urbana, IL, to evaluate crop injury, weed control, corn yield, and net economic returns provided by weed control programs in glyphosate-resistant corn. The herbicide programs evaluated included acetochlor preemergence (PRE) followed by (fb) glyphosate with or without atrazine postemergence (POST) and total POST programs consisting of single and sequential applications of glyphosate alone and tank-mixed with actochlor, atrazine, or both. Metolachlor PRE fb dicamba plus atrazine POST and metolachlor plus atrazine PRE were included for comparison. In the total POST treatments, mid-post (MPOST) applications provided better control than early-post (EPOST) applications on weeds that germinated throughout the growing season such as shattercane and common cocklebur, but also resulted in yield reductions of up to 23% caused by early-season weed competition. The addition of atrazine to glyphosate POST generally increased control of common cocklebur, morningglory species, and common waterhemp. EPOST or PRE fb EPOST applications generally provided higher yields than MPOST treatments, although MPOST treatments often provided equal or greater weed control at midseason. Treatments including two herbicide applications tended to provide greater weed control, yield, and profit than those with a single application. Input costs for glyphosate-resistant corn are slightly higher than nontransgenic hybrids. However, net economic returns are similar and the use of glyphosate POST allows greater flexibility in POST weed management decisions.

Word production variability is widespread in speech, and rates of variant production correlate with many factors. Recent research suggests mental representation of both canonical word forms and distinct reduced variants, and that production and processing are sensitive to variant frequency. What factors lead to frequency-weighted variant representations? An experiment manipulated following context and word repetition for final t/d words in read, narrative English speech. Modeling the experimentally generated data statistically showed higher final-segment deletion in tokens followed by consonant-initial words, but no evidence of increased deletion with repetition, regardless of context. Deletion rates were also higher the greater a word's cumulative exposure to consonant contexts (measured from distributional statistics), but there was no effect of word frequency. Token effects are interpreted in terms of articulation processes. The type-level context effect is interpreted within exemplar and usage-based models of language to suggest that experiences with word variants in contexts register as frequency-weighted representations.

Summary
The late twentieth century was one of the most productive, heterogeneous, and interesting periods in the history of the Colombian novel. Gabriel García Márquez, Alvaro Mutis, Fernando Vallejo, Darío Jaramillo, and others published some of their most compelling works, and the readership of the Colombian novel, for the first time in the nation's history, became truly international. The centerpiece of this public recognition was the awarding of the Nobel Prize for Literature to García Márquez in 1982. Alvaro Mutis, on the other hand, was prominent as both a novelist and a poet, and much of his fiction appeared in English translation.
Colombian society, culture, and literature had been exceptionally regionalist until the mid-1950s, and the Colombian novel tended to follow this pattern. In the mid-1950s, however, Colombia's modernization and breakdown of a regional nation was transforming the country. By the mid-1950s, television broadcasts began in all major cities, and during that same period Antonio Curcio Altamar published his now-classic study Evolución de la novela en Colombia (Evolution of the Novel in Colombia), a book that assumed a national vision for the novel. Similarly, the magazine Mito, rather than regional, was modern in conception and national and international in vision. It published writers from all regions, including the then young and relatively unknown costeño Gabriel García Márquez, and a then young poet named Alvaro Mutis, who later gained international recognition as both a poet and novelist.
In the 1960s, the irreverent nadaístas, primarily poets, successfully scandalized the still predominantly conservative and conventional cultural establishment. Whether or not the poetry and proclamations of Gonzalo Arango and his nadaísta cohorts will be judged of permanent value remains to be seen. Nevertheless, their rebellious textual and extratextual postures had a profound impact on literary tastes and paved the way for ongoing modern and postmodern literary activity in Colombia. The nadaísta novel prize provided an outlet for the publication and distribution of the most experimental fiction of the time, even though the national concern for understanding and evaluating La Violencia (the civil war of the 1940s and 1950s) meant that the novel of La Violencia was deemed much more important than novels of technical experimentation. The young poets among the nadaístas, besides Arango, were Jotamario Arbeláez, Eduardo Escobar, Amilcar Osorio, Jaime Jaramillo Escobar, and Dukardo Hinestrosa.

Summary
Introduction
The Colombian novel of the twenty-first century is a heterogeneous genre of multiple tendencies published by three generations of writers. In addition, with the rise of the new technologies since the early 1990s, the new digital genre offers a different concept of what a novel might be. In the twenty-first century, the most visible generation consisted of the writers known in Latin America as the “McOndo” generation, also identified as the “Crack” generation in Mexico and the Generation of the 1990s in Brazil. This generation was born in the 1960s, began publishing in the 1990s, and includes most prominently Mario Mendoza (b. 1964), Jorge Franco (b. 1962) Santiago Gamboa (b. 1965), Efraim Medina Reyes (b. 1967), Juan Carlos Botero (b. 1960), Octavio Escobar Giraldo (b. 1962), Pablo Montoya (b. 1963), and Enrique Serrano (b. 1960). The generation that preceded it began publishing earlier (in the 1970s and 1980s), and these writers, such as Fernando Vallejo (b. 1942), Darío Jaramillo (b. 1947), Laura Restrepo (b. 1950), Albalucía Angel (b. 1939), Fanny Buitrago (b. 1945), Ramón Illán Baca (b. 1942), Héctor Abad Facciolince (b. 1958), Evelio Rosero (b. 1958), Roberto Burgos (b. 1948), Oscar Collazos (b. 1942), Piedad Bonnet (b. 1951), William Ospina (b. 1954), Azriel Bibliowicz (b. 1949), Gustavo Alvarez Gardeazábal (b. 1945), José Gabriel Baena (b. 1952), and Tomás González (b. 1952), have all published a significant body of work that began appearing in the 1970s and 1980s. With respect to the youngest generation that followed the Generation of the 1990s, born since 1970 are Juan Gabriel Vásquez, Ricardo Silva Romero (1970 b.), Juan Manuel Ruiz, and Juan B. Gutiérrez. In this chapter, we will provide a brief overview of these three generations and then discuss some major topics of twenty-first century writing: the new urban violence, sicaresque and urban neorealism, exile and new experience of urban space, and new digital genres.
Three generations of writers
Of the three generations of writers, a Generation of the 1990s has been widely discussed since the mid-1990s, but there is little agreement about exactly what they represent. In general, these writers have rejected some aspects of the 1960s Boom, particularly the magical realism that in Colombia they associate with García Márquez but also, to some degree, with the popular commercial writer Isabel Allende.

Background
We previously reported that patients with early-stage bipolar disorder, but not healthy comparison controls, had body mass index (BMI)-related volume reductions in limbic brain areas, suggesting that the structural brain changes characteristic of bipolar disorder were more pronounced with increased weight.
AimsTo determine whether the most consistently reported neurochemical abnormality in bipolar disorder, increased glutamate/glutamine (Glx), was also more prominent with higher BMI.
MethodWe used single-voxel proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy to measure hippocampal Glx in 51 patients with first-episode mania (mean BMI = 24.1) and 28 healthy controls (mean BMI = 23.3).
ResultsIn patients, but not healthy controls, linear regression demonstrated that higher BMI predicted greater Glx. Factorial ANCOVA showed a significant BMI×diagnosis interaction, confirming a distinct effect of weight on Glx in patients.
ConclusionsTogether with our volumetric studies, these results suggest that higher BMI is associated with more pronounced structural and neurochemical limbic brain changes in bipolar disorder, even in early-stage patients with low obesity rates.

Summary
The vast majority of critical readings of One Hundred Years of Solitude (Cien años de soledad [1967]) appeared in the 1970s and 1980s, well before the recent rise of eco-criticism. The pioneer theorist of eco-critical readings, Lawrence Buell, published his seminal book on this subject, The Environmental Imagination, in the early 1990s, and since then a growing number of scholars and readers have been increasingly aware of the multiple roles and representations of nature in literature. Inevitably, many discussions of nature in literature lead to parallel considerations of elements that are not considered part of the natural world: culture and technology. In this study, I will begin with a discussion of background canonical literary texts for an understanding of nature and technology in One Hundred Years of Solitude, and then move to an eco-critical reading of García Márquez's work, with emphasis on One Hundred Years of Solitude. What is eco-criticism? I would bring to the discussion a 1999 definition constructed by the editors of a special issue on ecocriticsm of New Literary History that emphasises focus on the non-human. In this analysis, I will attempt to show how García Márquez constructs an elaborate and complex web of nature of multiple sources, but many of which, in fact, are human rather than non-human parts of nature. Of the human sources, two of the most noteworthy with respect to the representation of nature are, first, other literary texts and, second, oral tradition. I will explore each in this study.

We describe the growth of amorphous carbon nanofibers (CNFs) from iron-encapsulated dendrimer catalysts at ambient temperature and pressure conditions. Both fourth-generation poly (propyleneimine) (PPI) and poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers were suitable macromolecular hosts for the catalytic species. Average nanofiber diameters range from 10 - 15 nm, with lengths in excess of 20 microns.
