Summary
The science of studying diamond inclusions for understanding Earth history has developed significantly over the past decades, with new instrumentation and techniques applied to diamond sample archives revealing the stories contained within diamond inclusions. This chapter reviews what diamonds can tell us about the deep carbon cycle over the course of Earth’s history. It reviews how the geochemistry of diamonds and their inclusions inform us about the deep carbon cycle, the origin of the diamonds in Earth’s mantle, and the evolution of diamonds through time.

A Tits polygon is a bipartite graph in which the neighborhood of every vertex is endowed with an “opposition relation” satisfying certain properties. Moufang polygons are precisely the Tits polygons in which these opposition relations are all trivial. There is a standard construction that produces a Tits polygon whose opposition relations are not all trivial from an arbitrary pair $(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5},T)$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}$ is a building of type $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1}$, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1}$ is a spherical, irreducible Coxeter diagram of rank at least $3$, and $T$ is a Tits index of absolute type $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1}$ and relative rank $2$. A Tits polygon is called $k$-plump if its opposition relations satisfy a mild condition that is satisfied by all Tits triangles coming from a pair $(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5},T)$ such that every panel of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}$ has at least $k+1$ chambers. We show that a $5$-plump Tits triangle is parametrized and uniquely determined by a ring $R$ that is alternative and of stable rank $2$. We use the connection between Tits triangles and the theory of Veldkamp planes as developed by Veldkamp and Faulkner to show existence.

We give a short proof of the uniqueness of finite spherical buildings of rank at least 3 in terms of the structure of the rank 2 residues and use this result to prove a result making it possible to identify an arbitrary finite group of Lie type from knowledge of its “parabolic structure” alone. Our proof also involves a connection between loops, “Latin chamber systems” and buildings.

We give an explicit construction of the Ree groups of type G2 as groups acting on mixed Moufang hexagons together with detailed proofs of the basic properties of these groups contained in the two fundamental papers of Tits on this subject (see [7] and [8]). We also give a short proof that the norm of a Ree group is anisotropic.

The diversity of physical phenomena embraced by the study of Chemically Peculiar (CP) stars results in an associated research community with interests that are equally diverse. This fact became once more evident during the CP#Ap Workshop that took place in Vienna (Austria) in September 2007, and which gathered over 80 members of this research community. Besides the excellent scientific outcome of the meeting, during the workshop the community had the opportunity to discuss its organization and plans for the future. Following on those plans, the Working Group has submitted a proposal for a Joint Discussion during the IAU XXVII General Assembly, in Rio de Janeiro, which has meanwhile been accepted. Moreover, through an ApN newsletter forum, the Working Group has compiled requests from the community concerning atomic and related data. These requests have been put together and will be shared with Commission 14.

Summary
Introduction
The theory of affine buildings reveals fascinating links between group theory, Euclidean geometry and number theory. In particular, reflections, the Weyl chambers of root systems and valuations of fields all play a central role in their classification.
The study of affine buildings was begun by Bruhat and Tits in [4] and the classification of affine buildings of rank at least four was completed by Tits in [11]. When combined with the classification of Moufang polygons carried out in [12], the Bruhat-Tits classification covers also affine buildings of rank three under the assumption in this case that the building at infinity is Moufang.
Our goal here is to give a very brief overview of this work. All the details can be found in the forthcoming book [14] (as well, of course, as in [4] and [11]).
In this article we regard buildings exclusively as certain edge-colored graphs. For different points of view, see [1]. Other excellent sources of results about affine buildings are [3], [5] and [8].
Buildings
Let Σ be an edge-colored graph and let I denote the set of colors appearing on the edges of Σ. We call |I| the rank of Σ. For each subset J of I let ΣJ be the graph obtained from Σ by deleting all the edges whose color is not in J (but without deleting any vertices). A J-residue of Σ for some subset J of I is a connected component of the graph ΣJ. Thus two distinct J-residues (for a fixed subset J of I) are always disjoint.

We show that in a special Moufang set, either the root groups are elementary abelian 2-groups, or the Hua subgroup H (= the Cartan subgroup) acts “irreducibly” on U, i.e. the only non-trivial H-invariant subgroup of a root group normalized by H is the whole root group.
