Fluridone was registered for use in rice in 2023, offering a new herbicide site of action for growers. However, little information is available on rice tolerance to this herbicide. Field experiments conducted in 2022 and replicated in 2023 near Colt, AR, evaluated the tolerance of twelve rice cultivars to fluridone, applied preemergence or at the 3-leaf growth stage, in separate experiments. Each experiment consisted of one cultivar. Fluridone rates were 0, 168 (1× label rate), and 336 (2× label rate) g ai ha⁻¹ in all experiments. Visible injury varied between years in all experiments, likely due to different environmental conditions. In 2022, injury following preemergence applications of fluridone was below 25% across cultivars. In contrast, in 2023, injury ≥ 30% occurred to five cultivars, with a maximum of 58% observed for the cultivar ‘DG263L’. Across both years, only three cultivars achieved injury ≥ 20% following fluridone applications at the 3-leaf rice. Fluridone negatively affected shoot density, groundcover, chlorophyll content, and days to 50% heading in most cultivars when applied preemergence. When fluridone was applied to 3-leaf rice, at least one of the variables evaluated was negatively affected in two and nine cultivars in 2022 and 2023, respectively. Grain yield reductions of at least 18% were observed in eight cultivars in 2022, and a grain yield decrease from 9% to 49% in eight cultivars occurred in 2023 in the preemergence experiments. Fluridone applied at the 3-leaf rice did not cause a yield penalty to any cultivar in 2022, whereas in 2023, eight cultivars had a yield loss. Yield loss in ‘DG263L’ occurred at the 1× rate in both experiments, indicating this cultivar appears sensitive to fluridone, regardless of the application timing. Based on these findings, fluridone tolerance is cultivar-dependent. Furthermore, preemergence applications of fluridone in rice should be avoided.

As mid-southern U.S. rice producers continue to adopt furrow-irrigated rice (FIR) production practices, supplementary management efforts will be vital in combating Palmer amaranth due to the extended germination period provided by the lack of a continual flood. Previous research has revealed the ability of cover crops to suppress Palmer amaranth emergence in corn, cotton, and soybean production systems; however, research on cover crop weed control efficacy in rice production is scarce. Therefore, trials were initiated in Arkansas in 2022 and 2023 to evaluate the effect of cover crops across five site years on rice emergence, groundcover, grain yield, and total Palmer amaranth emergence. The cover crops evaluated were cereal rye, winter wheat, Austrian winterpea, and hairy vetch. Cover crop biomass accumulation varied by site year, ranging from 430 to 3,440 kg ha-1, with cereal rye generally being the most consistent producer of high-quantity biomass across site years. Rice growth and development were generally unaffected by cover crop establishment; however, all cover crops reduced rice emergence by up to 30% in one site year. Rice groundcover was reduced by 13% from cereal rye in one site year two weeks before heading but cover crops did not impact rough rice grain yield in any of the site years. Palmer amaranth emergence was reduced by 19 and 35% with cereal rye relative to the absence of a cover crop when rice was planted in April in Marianna and May in Fayetteville, respectively. In most trials, Palmer amaranth emergence was not reduced by a cereal cover crop. In most instances, legume cover crops resulted in less Palmer amaranth emergence than without a cover crop. Based on these results, legume cover crops appear to provide some suppression of Palmer amaranth emergence in FIR while having a minimal effect on rice establishment and yield.

Tetflupyrolimet is the first herbicide with a novel site of action labeled preemergence (PRE) and early postemergence for use in agronomic crops in the last three decades. Direct-seeded paddy rice field experiments were conducted near Stuttgart on a silt loam soil, AR, and Keiser on a clay soil, AR, to evaluate tetflupyrolimet-containing herbicide programs in comparison to commercial standards in conventional, imidazolinone-, and quizalofop-resistant rice systems. Additionally, a furrow-irrigated rice experiment was conducted near Colt, AR, on a silt loam soil, and Keiser to ensure clomazone and tetflupyrolimet mixtures compared to commercial standards. Twelve commonly planted rice cultivars were also evaluated in response to a single PRE or postemergence (POST) (2- to 3-leaf rice) application of tetflupyrolimet at 200 and 400 g ai ha-1 in a paddy rice system, near Colt. When averaged over soil texture and site-year, all herbicide programs, provided ≥98% barnyardgrass control at 56 d after (DA) the last application. Visible rice injury varied for each rice system. Still, injury rarely differed amongst herbicide programs, except at a single evaluation timing in the conventional (7 DA 3- to 4-leaf applications) and quizalofop-resistant (preflood) systems. All 12 rice cultivars displayed a high tolerance level to a single PRE or POST application of tetflupyrolimet at 200 and 400 g ai ha-1. No visible injury, stand loss, or negative impact on rice maturity or reduced grain yield was observed for any cultivar. Tetflupyrolimet will be an effective alternative SOA in a program approach for barnyardgrass while maintaining excellent rice crop safety.

Tetflupyrolimet is the first herbicide with a novel site of action to be commercialized for use in agronomic crops in three decades. Direct-seed rice field experiments were conducted at research facilities near Stuttgart (silt loam), AR, and Keiser (clay), AR, to evaluate tetflupyrolimet as a preemergence herbicide versus commercial standards. Greenhouse experiments determined the influence of soil moisture on pre- and postemergence (POST) barnyardgrass control with tetflupyrolimet and clomazone, and the impact of a delayed flood on efficacy when POST-applied. For the field experiments, clomazone, tetflupyrolimet, and quinclorac were applied individually PRE at 336 and 560, 134 and 224, and 336 and 560 g ai ha-1, respectively, on a silt loam and clay soil, along with clomazone plus tetflupyrolimet and clomazone plus quinclorac at the same rates. The soil moisture experiment included a single PRE and POST application of clomazone at 336 g ai ha-1, tetflupyrolimet at 134 g ai ha-1, and a mixture at the respective rates, on a silt loam soil at 50, 75, and 100% of field capacity. For the flood timing experiment, tetflupyrolimet was applied to 2- to 3-leaf barnyardgrass at 134 g ai ha-1, and a flood was established at 4 hr after treatment (HAT) and 5 and 10 d after treatment (DAT). Barnyardgrass control with a tetflupyrolimet and clomazone mixture was comparable to clomazone plus quinclorac when averaged over all evaluations on silt loam and clay texture soils (≥91%). Soil moisture interacted with herbicide treatments for PRE and POST barnyardgrass efficacy when averaged over DAT, with tetflupyrolimet plus clomazone generally providing the greatest and most consistent control across regimes. Flooding barnyardgrass at 4 HAT provided superior control to later flood timings. Tetflupyrolimet is an effective residual barnyardgrass herbicide, and the addition of clomazone will aid in providing consistent control across varying soil moisture conditions.

Furrow-irrigated rice (Oryza sativa L.) hectares are increasing in the Midsouth. The lack of sustained flooding creates a favorable environment for weed emergence and persistence, which makes Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson) difficult to control throughout the growing season. The negative yield impacts associated with season-long A. palmeri interference in corn, cotton, and soybean have been evaluated. However, there is limited knowledge of the weed’s ability to influence rice grain yield. Research was initiated in 2022 and 2023 to determine the effect of A. palmeri time of emergence relative to rice on weed seed production and grain yield. Cotyledon stage A. palmeri plants were marked every seven days, beginning one week before rice emergence through four weeks after rice emergence. Amaranthus palmeri seed production decreased exponentially as emergence timing was delayed relative to rice, and seed production increased by 447 seed plant-1 for every one-gram increase in weed biomass. Without rice competition and from the earliest emergence timing, A.palmeri produced 540,000 seeds plant-1. Amaranthus palmeri that emerged one week before the crop had the greatest spatial influence on rice, with grain yield loss of 5% and 50% at a distance of 1.4 m and 0.40 m from the weed, respectively. As A. palmeri emergence was delayed, the area of influence decreased. However, A. palmeri plants emerging 3.5 weeks after rice emergence still negatively affected grain yield and produce sufficient seed to replenish the soil seedbank, potentially impacting long-term crop management decisions. These results show that the time of A. palmeri emergence is a crucial factor influencing rice grain yield and weed seed production, which can be used to determine the consequences of escapes in rice.

As herbicide resistance continues to render commonly used rice herbicides ineffective, alternative sites of action are paramount to maintaining yield and producer profitability. Combining a slow-release formulation and a fenclorim seed treatment might allow the safe use of S-metolachlor in rice. Experiments were initiated in 2022 and 2023 near Colt, AR, on a silt loam soil to evaluate crop safety using a capsule suspension (CS) formulation of S-metolachlor and a fenclorim seed treatment in rice. The first experiment assessed the tolerance of two cultivars (‘Diamond’ and ‘DG263L’) to three rates (0.42, 0.84, and 1.68 kg ai ha−1) of a CS S-metolachlor at a delayed preemergence (DPRE) application timing in conjunction with a fenclorim seed treatment. The second experiment evaluated a 1- to 2-leaf (EPOST) application of a CS S-metolachlor at 0.56 and 1.12 kg ai ha−1 to fenclorim-treated rice. Fenclorim reduced injury and partially protected rice yield when S-metolachlor was applied DPRE at 1.68 kg ai ha−1 in both years. However, in one year, under adverse conditions, rice yields were only 65% and 66% of the nontreated control for fenclorim-treated ‘Diamond’ and ‘DG263L’, respectively. An EPOST application of S-metolachlor at 1.12 kg ai ha−1 resulted in 44% to 51% visible injury 35 d after treatment. Relative rice yields were 88% and 89% of the nontreated weed-free treatment in 2022 and 2023, respectively. Fenclorim provided enhanced crop safety at both the 0.84 and 1.68 kg ai ha−1 rates of S-metolachlor. However, the potential for reduced yield can arise when unfavorable conditions occur soon after application. An EPOST application timing of CS S-metolachlor at 0.56 kg ai ha−1 may be a viable option in rice, but 1.12 kg ai ha−1 is too high on a silt loam soil, resulting in significant rice injury.

New machine-vision technologies like the John Deere See & Spray™ could provide the opportunity to reduce herbicide use by detecting weeds and target-spraying herbicides simultaneously. Experiments were conducted for 2 yr in Keiser, AR, and Greenville, MS, to compare residual herbicide timings and targeted spray applications versus traditional broadcast herbicide programs in glyphosate/glufosinate/dicamba-resistant soybean. Treatments utilized consistent herbicides and rates with a preemergence (PRE) application followed by an early postemergence (EPOST) dicamba application followed by a mid-postemergence (MPOST) glufosinate application. All treatments included a residual at PRE and excluded or included a residual EPOST and MPOST. Additionally, the herbicide application method was considered, with traditional broadcast applications, broadcasted residual + targeted applications of postemergence herbicides (dual tank), or targeted applications of all herbicides (single tank). Targeted applications provided comparable control to broadcast applications with a ≤1% decrease in efficacy and overall control ≥93% for Palmer amaranth, broadleaf signalgrass, morningglory species, and purslane species. Additionally, targeted sprays slightly reduced soybean injury by at most 5 percentage points across all evaluations, and these effects did not translate to a yield increase at harvest. The relationship between weed area and targeted sprayed area also indicates that nozzle angle can influence potential herbicide savings, with narrower nozzle angles spraying less area. On average, targeted sprays saved a range of 28.4% to 62.4% on postemergence herbicides. On the basis of these results, with specific machine settings, targeted application programs could reduce the amount of herbicide applied while providing weed control comparable to that of traditional broadcast applications.

Tiafenacil is a new nonselective protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase (PPO)–inhibiting herbicide with both grass and broadleaf activity labeled for preplant application to corn, cotton, soybean, and wheat. Early-season corn emergence and growth often coincides in the mid-South with preplant herbicide application in cotton and soybean, thereby increasing opportunity for off-target herbicide movement from adjacent fields. Field studies were conducted in 2022 to identify the impacts of reduced rates of tiafenacil (12.5% to 0.4% of the lowest labeled application rate of 24.64 g ai ha–1) applied to two- or four-leaf corn. Corn injury 1 wk after treatment (WAT) for the two- and four-leaf growth stages ranged from 31% to 6% and 37% to 9%, respectively, whereas at 2 WAT these respective ranges were 21.7% to 4% and 22.5% to 7.2%. By 4 WAT, visible injury following the two- and four-leaf exposure timing was no greater than 8% in all instances except the highest tiafenacil rate applied at the four-leaf growth stage (13%). Tiafenacil had no negative season-long impact, as the early-season injury observed was not manifested in a reduction in corn height 2 WAT or yield. Application of tiafenacil directly adjacent to corn in early vegetative stages of growth should be avoided. In cases where off-target movement does occur, however, affected corn should be expected to fully recover with no impact on growth and yield, assuming adequate growing conditions and agronomic/pest management practices are provided.

Italian ryegrass control is one of the most significant limitations in wheat production in the United States today. Resistance to Herbicide Resistance Action Committee (HRAC)/Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) Groups 1, 2, and 9 in Arkansas have further complicated postemergence control, whereas residual herbicides still show effective weed control. One problem is the potential of HRAC/WSSA Group 15 herbicides to injure wheat when applied preemergence, indicating the need for a herbicide safener. A series of experiments were conducted in Fayetteville, AR, to evaluate crop tolerance and Italian ryegrass control using a capsule suspension (CS) formulation of S-metolachlor in conjunction with fenclorim-treated wheat. Experiments were conducted as a two-factor factorial with S-metolachlor applied at three rates (0.37, 0.74, and 1.12 kg ai ha–1) and a microencapsulated formulation of acetochlor at 1.05 kg ai ha–1, and three rates of a fenclorim seed treatment at 0, 0.5, and 2.0 g ai kg–1 of seed. Separate experiments utilized either a preemergence (PRE) or a delayed-preemergence (DPRE) application timing. In both experiments, S-metolachlor at 0.74 and 1.12 kg ai ha–1 provided 77% to 96% control of Italian ryegrass by preharvest, whereas acetochlor only provided 49% to 72% control. Visible wheat injury from PRE applications ranged from 7% to 49% for all treatments 21 d after treatment (DAT), with a reduction in injury when fenclorim-treated wheat was used for both the 0.74 and 1.12 kg ai ha–1 rate of S-metolachlor. In the DPRE experiments, wheat injury ranged from 5% to 16% 21 DAT with no noticeable safening from the presence of fenclorim at any herbicide rate. The results of these experiments indicate that a DPRE application using a CS formulation of S-metolachlor would be more favorable for producers to mitigate the potential for injury to wheat while providing Italian ryegrass control. Additionally, at the DPRE application timing, fenclorim is unnecessary for S-metolachlor to be safely applied at the rates evaluated.

Herbicide-resistant Palmer amaranth is creating additional challenges for producers who choose to adopt a furrow-irrigated rice production system due to the absence of a sustained flood, enabling extended weed emergence. Fluridone has been shown to effectively control Palmer amaranth in cotton production systems and was recently registered for use in rice. Experiments were initiated in 2022 and 2023 1) to evaluate Palmer amaranth control and rice tolerance to preemergence- and postemergence-applied fluridone at 0.5× (84 g ai ha−1) and 1× (168 g ai ha−1) rates on a silt loam soil; and 2) assess the effect of various herbicide programs that contain fluridone on Palmer amaranth biomass, seed production, and rough rice grain yield. Preemergence applications of fluridone at a 1× rate in combination with clomazone resulted in 84% control of Palmer amaranth 21 d after treatment (DAT). Fluridone, in combination with clomazone preemergence, caused up to 36% rice injury 21 DAT; however, early season injury did not negatively affect rice yields. Palmer amaranth biomass and fecundity were reduced with herbicide programs that included fluridone plus florpyrauxifen-benzyl, and, in some instances, there was no Palmer amaranth biomass or seed production following multiple applications of both herbicides. Fluridone- and florpyrauxifen-benzyl–based herbicide programs achieved effective control of Palmer amaranth when applied timely, but injury to hybrid rice is enhanced with preemergence applications of fluridone that are not permitted with the current label.

Rice producers battle herbicide-resistant weeds worldwide while producing rice for ≥50% of the world’s population. Oxyfluorfen can provide rice producers with an alternative site of action for barnyardgrass control, as there are no documented cases of grass weeds being resistant to the herbicide in the mid-southern United States. Oxyfluorfen is anticipated to be labeled in the Roxy Rice Production System and may be sold as a clomazone/oxyfluorfen premixture; hence, experiments were conducted in 2021 and 2022 to evaluate preemergence-applied clomazone/oxyfluorfen ratios compared to clomazone alone on silt loam and clay soils. All ratios of the herbicides caused less than 7% injury to rice in two of four site-years on silt loam soils, whereas, in the two other site-years, the mixtures caused 10% to 40% rice injury at all observation timings. All combinations of the two herbicides provided at least 73% barnyardgrass control 5 wk after rice emergence (WAE) in three of the four site-years on silt loam soils. In at least two of four site-years at 1 and 3 WAE, barnyardgrass control was improved when oxyfluorfen was added to clomazone compared to clomazone alone. On clay soil, barnyardgrass control in both site-years was ≥77% at 5 WAE for all clomazone and oxyfluorfen ratios. Injury to rice ranged from 13% to 30% for all treatments containing clomazone and oxyfluorfen in one of two site-years on clay soil at all observation timings. At 7 WAE, contrasts indicated that the 1:3 ratio of clomazone to oxyfluorfen provided greater barnyardgrass control than the 1:1.5 and 1:2 ratios in one of two site-years. Based on these findings, oxyfluorfen would improve the consistency of barnyardgrass control over clomazone alone in some instances. However, there is an increased risk of injury to rice with the addition of oxyfluorfen.

Oxyfluorfen is a herbicide that inhibits protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase and has shown significant potential in its ability to control barnyardgrass. Oxyfluorfen is categorized as a Group 14 herbicide by the Herbicide Resistance Action Committee (HRAC)/Weed Science Society of America (WSSA). Despite its current lack of labeling for use on rice in the mid-southern United States due to its potential to cause crop injury, the introduction of a trait in rice that confers resistance to oxyfluorfen could provide producers with an effective alternative site of action for weed control. Field experiments were conducted during the 2021 and 2022 growing seasons near Stuttgart, AR, and near Lonoke, AR, to determine the optimum rates of clomazone (280 or 336 g ha−1) and oxyfluorfen (673 or 840 g ha−1) to use in sequential preemergence (PRE) and postemergence (POST) applications on a silt loam soil and to assess the efficacy of oxyfluorfen when combined with clomazone and quinclorac applied PRE, followed by oxyfluorfen applied POST. No differences in barnyardgrass control were observed among treatments 14 d after emergence in 3 site years, as all control was ≥90%. By 35 d after the POST application, barnyardgrass control was ≥94% for all herbicide treatments in all site years. All herbicide treatments resulted in lower barnyardgrass seed production than a nontreated control in 2021. Contrasts revealed that oxyfluorfen applied PRE on a silt loam soil resulted in barnyardgrass control that was similar to that of clomazone or quinclorac applied alone at 14 d after emergence. Although oxyfluorfen combined with clomazone or quinclorac did not increase barnyardgrass control, an additional site of action for control of this weed could help reduce the evolution of resistance. Mixing oxyfluorfen with clomazone in a dry-seeded rice production system in the mid-southern United States would effectively control barnyardgrass and reduce the risk for resistance to both herbicides, further highlighting the potential of oxyfluorfen in rice production.

Annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) populations in turfgrass have evolved resistance to several herbicides in the United States, but there has been no confirmed resistance from an agricultural field. Recently, glyphosate failed to control a P. annua population found in a field in a soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] and rice (Oryza sativa L.) rotation in Poinsett County, AR. The present study focused on determining the sensitivity of a putatively resistant accession (R1) to glyphosate compared with two susceptible accessions (S1 and S2). The experiments included a dose–response study, 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) gene copy number and expression analysis, and assessment of mutations in EPSPS. Based on the dose–response analysis, R1 required 1,038 g ae ha−1 of glyphosate to cause 50% biomass reduction, whereas S1 and S2 only required 148.2 and 145.5 g ae ha−1, respectively. The resistance index (RI) was approximately 7-fold relative to the susceptible accessions. Real-time polymerase chain reaction data revealed at least a 15-fold increase in the EPSPS copy number in R1, along with a higher gene expression. No mutations in EPSPS were found. Gene duplication was identified as the main mechanism conferring resistance in R1. The research presented here reports the first incidence of glyphosate resistance in P. annua from an agronomic field crop situation in the United States.

Commercialization of florpyrauxifen-benzyl as Loyant® in 2018 as a synthetic auxin herbicide in rice was followed by soybean injury due to off-target movement of spray applications in the mid-southern United States. Concerns surrounding off-target movement led to the exploration of an alternative application method to help alleviate the issue. Field experiments were conducted in 2020 and 2021 to explore the likelihood of a reduction in soybean injury following applications of florpyrauxifen-benzyl coated on urea in narrow- and wide-row soybean systems and to determine the likelihood of volatilization from this novel application method. Florpyrauxifen-benzyl spray-applied at 0.18 g ai ha−1 caused greater than 60% injury, whereas coating the herbicide on urea at 5.63 g ai ha−1 never exceeded 30% injury in narrow-row soybean. Similarly, florpyrauxifen-benzyl spray-applied at 0.18 g ai ha−1 caused greater than 50% injury, whereas coating the herbicide on urea at 5.63 g ai ha−1 never exceeded 30% injury in wide-row soybean. As soybean injury increased, relative yield decreased in both narrow- and wide-row soybean. Spray-applied florpyrauxifen-benzyl decreased relative soybean groundcover, yield components, and soybean survival rate as the herbicide rate increased, whereas coating the herbicide on urea resulted in little to no decrease in both narrow- and wide-row soybean assessments. No negative impacts on relative yield and yield components of soybean from florpyrauxifen-benzyl coated on urea indicates that even though visible injury may persist, there is a low likelihood of any yield losses associated with the herbicide exposure using this application method. Additionally, coating the florpyrauxifen-benzyl on urea did not increase the likelihood of volatilization under any of the evaluated soil moisture conditions. Overall, applying florpyrauxifen-benzyl coated on urea is likely to be a safer application method and can reduce soybean injury compared to spray-applying the herbicide when favorable off-target movement conditions exist.

Tiafenacil is a new non-selective protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase (PPO)-inhibiting herbicide with both grass and broadleaf activity labeled for preplant application to corn (Zea mays L.), cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Early-season soybean emergence and growth often coincide in the U.S. Midsouth with preplant herbicide application in later-planted cotton and soybean, thereby increasing opportunity for off-target herbicide movement from adjacent fields. Field studies were conducted in 2022 to identify any deleterious impacts of reduced rates of tiafenacil (12.5% to 0.4% of the lowest labeled application rate of 24.64 g ai ha−1) applied to 1- to 2-leaf soybean. Visual injury at 1 wk after treatment (WAT) with 1/8×, 1/16×, 1/32×, and 1/64× rate of tiafenacil was 80%, 61%, 39%, and 21%, while at 4 WAT, these respective rates resulted in visual injury of 67%, 33%, 14%, and 4%. Tiafenacil at these respective rates reduced soybean height 55% to 2% and 53% to 5% at 1 and 4 WAT and soybean yield 53%, 24%, 5%, and 1%. Application of tiafenacil directly adjacent to soybean in early vegetative growth should be avoided, as severe visual injury will occur. In cases where off-target movement does occur, impacted soybean should not be expected to fully recover, and negative impact on growth and yield will be observed.

Complaints regarding the sensitivity of rice to florpyrauxifen-benzyl and off-target movement of the herbicide occurred following its commercial launch in 2018 in the midsouthern United States. These two concerns encouraged the exploration of an alternative application method for florpyrauxifen-benzyl in rice. A field study was conducted in 2020 and 2021 to determine if coating florpyrauxifen-benzyl on urea would reduce negative impacts of the herbicide to rice. Five commercial rice lines were evaluated: ‘Diamond’, ‘Titan’, ‘RT7321 FP’, ‘RT7521 FP’, and ‘XP753’. Florpyrauxifen-benzyl coated on urea at a 2× rate (60 g ai ha–1) reduced rice injury in one of five commercial rice lines in 2020 and four of five commercial rice lines in 2021, compared to spray applications at the same rate. In 2020, ‘RT7521 FP’ exhibited a 17-percentage point injury reduction when coating florpyrauxifen-benzyl on urea at a 2× rate vs. the same rate sprayed. In 2021, rice injury was reduced by 26, 10, and 27 percentage points in the commercial rice lines ‘Diamond’, ‘Titan’, and ‘XP753’, respectively, following coated urea vs. spray applications at 4 wk after treatment (WAT). ‘XP753’ exhibited reduced injury (15 percentage points) by coating florpyrauxifen-benzyl at a 1× rate (30 g ai ha–1) 4 WAT in 2021, and another, ‘Diamond’, had comparable groundcover to nontreated plots when florpyrauxifen-benzyl was coated on urea at a 1× rate rather than the reductions observed from the spray application at a 2× rate. Yield differences were a function of urea rate rather than application method, where in six out of ten instances greater rough rice grain yield occurred at the higher rate. Findings from this experiment indicate that coating florpyrauxifen-benzyl on urea can reduce the amount of injury observed, especially in areas of overlap where you would have a 2× rate.

Tiafenacil is a new nonselective protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase–inhibiting herbicide with both grass and broadleaf activity labeled for preplant application to corn, cotton, soybean, and wheat. Early season rice emergence and growth often coincide in the mid-southern United States with applications of preplant herbicides to cotton and soybean, thereby increasing the opportunity for off-target herbicide movement from adjacent fields. Field studies were conducted to identify any deleterious effects of reduced rates of tiafenacil (12.5% to 0.4% of the lowest labeled application rate of 24.64 g ai ha−1) applied to 1- or 3-leaf rice. Visual injury 1 wk after treatment (WAT) for the 1- and 3-leaf growth stages ranged from 50% to 7% and 20% to 2%, respectively, whereas at 2 WAT these respective ranges were 13% to 2%, and no injury was observed. Tiafenacil applied at those rates had no negative season-long effect because observed early season injury was not manifested as a reduction in rice height 2 WAT or rough rice yield. Application of tiafenacil to crops directly adjacent to rice in its early vegetative stages of growth should be avoided because visual injury will occur. When off-target movement does occur, however, the affected rice should be expected to fully recover with no effect on growth or yield, assuming adequate growing conditions and agronomic/pest management are provided.

Barnyardgrass and other troublesome weeds have become a major problem for producers in a flooded rice system. Cultural control options and more efficient herbicide applications have become a priority to increase efficiency and weed control in rice. This study aimed to determine the effects of row width and nozzle selection on spray coverage and weed control in a flooded rice system. A field experiment was conducted at 7 site-years (Lonoke, AR, in 2021 and 2022; Pine Tree, AR, in 2021 and 2022; Rohwer, AR, in 2022; and Stoneville, MS, in 2021 and 2022) as a randomized complete block split-plot design. Five nozzles (XR, AIXR, TTI, TTI60, and AITTJ60) (subplot factor) were used for herbicide applications, and plots were drill-seeded in four row widths (whole plot factor) (13, 19, 25, and 38 cm). A droplet size experiment was conducted to evaluate the droplet size and velocity of each nozzle type used in the field experiment. Overall, as row width increased, barnyardgrass density increased. The rice grown in a wider width took longer to generate canopy closure, allowing weed escapes in the crop. For example, the 13-cm width had a 12 percentage point canopy coverage increase compared to the 38-cm row width at the preflood timing resulting in a reduction of six barnyardgrass plants per square meter. The smallest droplet size-producing nozzle (XR) provided greater weed control throughout the study but is more prone to drift. The dual-fan nozzles (AITTJ60 and TTI60) had variable weed control impacts, and it was difficult to predict when this might occur; however, they did have increased deposits on water-sensitive cards compared to single-fan counterparts (AIXR and TTI). In conclusion, a narrower row width (e.g., 19-cm or less) and a smaller droplet size producing nozzle (XR) are optimal for barnyardgrass control in a flooded rice system.

Florpyrauxifen-benzyl has generated complaints and concerns around rice injury and off-target movement to soybean since its commercial launch in 2018. Developing a precise method for applying florpyrauxifen-benzyl was imperative for its continued use. Experiments were conducted in 2020 and 2021 to evaluate rice weed control as influenced by preflood application interval and flood loss following florpyrauxifen-benzyl at 30 g ai ha−1 applied as a spray or coated on urea. In a preflood application experiment, coating florpyrauxifen-benzyl on urea and applying it the day of flood establishment and 5 and 10 d prior to flooding (DPTF) resulted in lower yellow nutsedge, broadleaf signalgrass, and barnyardgrass control than when the herbicide was spray at 3 and 5 wk after final treatment (WAFT). Coating florpyrauxifen-benzyl onto urea provided only 61% to 63% yellow nutsedge control at 3 and 5 WAFT, which was 35 to 37 percentage points lower than when the spray was applied at 5 or 10 DPTF. Likewise, rice yields following applications of florpyrauxifen-benzyl coated onto urea were 1,200 kg ha−1 less than yields following spray applications. Florpyrauxifen-benzyl coated onto urea and clomazone provided lower levels of weed control than spraying the herbicide alone, suggesting an explanation for the yield losses. The timing of flood loss experiment suggested that when florpyrauxifen-benzyl coated onto urea at 30 g ai ha−1 was applied preflood and flood was relinquished at 2 h, 24 h, and 7 d after flood establishment, hemp sesbania and yellow nutsedge control were not affected. However, loss of floodwater 2 h after flood establishment resulted in lower barnyardgrass control than when the flood was lost 24 h and 7 d after flooding. Generally, the period between a herbicide application and flooding completion should be minimized to aid in weed control. These results indicate the importance of maintaining a flood for weed control and nutrient management.

Furrow-irrigated rice (Oryza sativa L.) has become a popular option for rice production in Arkansas. Highly troublesome weeds like barnyardgrass [Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv.] are a major problem for producers in all rice production systems. Cultural tactics should become a priority to enhance crop growth and competitiveness. This research aimed to determine the effects of bed width (irrigation furrow spacing) and crop row spacing manipulation on E. crus-galli emergence and seed production in a furrow-irrigated rice system. Three bed widths (76, 97, and 152 cm) (whole-plot factor) were used, and plots were drill seeded in four crop row spacings (13, 19, 25, and 38 cm) (subplot factor). The widest width of 152 cm had a slight increase in E. crus-galli density in the early rice life cycle but, by the end of the season, did not differ from the narrower bed widths. Conversely, a decrease in E. crus-galli seed production was observed as the bed width increased. Similar rice canopy coverage and yields occurred among all three bed widths. As for crop row spacing, as the width increased, E. crus-galli density also increased. The 13-cm crop row spacing had the lowest preflood E. crus-galli density, preharvest panicle count, and seed production. No effect of crop row spacing was observed on rice canopy coverage; however, the 13-cm crop row spacing produced the greatest rice yield. The 13-cm crop row spacing paired with the 152-cm bed width may be the optimum combination of ecological strategies in furrow-irrigated rice to reduce E. crus-galli seed production while maintaining rice growth and yield.
