An intermediate-depth (1751 m) ice core was drilled at the South Pole between 2014 and 2016 using the newly designed US Intermediate Depth Drill. The South Pole ice core is the highest-resolution interior East Antarctic ice core record that extends into the glacial period. The methods used at the South Pole to handle and log the drilled ice, the procedures used to safely retrograde the ice back to the National Science Foundation Ice Core Facility (NSF-ICF), and the methods used to process and sample the ice at the NSF-ICF are described. The South Pole ice core exhibited minimal brittle ice, which was likely due to site characteristics and, to a lesser extent, to drill technology and core handling procedures.

Lower bathyal sediments representing portions of the Luisian and Mohnian stages of Kleinpell (1938) occur on a submarine ridge near Tanner Bank, offshore southern California. The presence of abundant and well-preserved calcareous nannofossils, diatoms, silicoflagellates, radiolarians and foraminifera allows accurate correlations with the onshore type sections of these stages. In terms of the calcareous nannofossil zones, the age range is from the Sphenolithus heteromorphus Zone to the Discoaster kugleri Zone. Although abundant benthic foraminifera indicative of the Luisian and Mohnian are present, they are accompanied by species more characteristic of the Pliocene Repettian Stage of Natland (1952) and the Pliocene-Miocene “Delmontian” Stage of Kleinpell (1938). Many of these latter species live today at lower bathyal depths (below 2,000 m), others occur in lower bathyal sediments as old as Oligocene, but are absent in the onshore type sections of the Luisian and Mohnian stages in coastal California. We ascribe their absence in onshore sequences to deposition at middle bathyal depths. The known chronostratigraphic ranges of several species are extended and five new species and two new subspecies of benthic foraminifera are described.
The following new taxa are described: Bolivina pelita n. sp., Cassidulinella inflata n. sp., Globocassidulina undulata n. sp., Cibicidoides mckannai miocenicus n. subsp., C. mckannai sigmosuturalis n. subsp., Pullenia fragilis n. sp., Parafissurina inornata n. sp.

Background:
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating cause of progressive weakness, respiratory failure and death. To date there is no effective therapy to meaningfully extend survival but continuously emerging targets and putative treatments are studied in clinical trials. Canadian epidemiological data on ALS is scarce and the socioeconomic impact of ALS on Canadian society is unclear. The Canadian Neuromuscular Disease Registry (CNDR) is a national clinic-based registry of patients with neuromuscular diseases with the goal of facilitating the design and execution of clinical research.
Methods:We conducted a national stakeholder survey to assess interest for a Canadian ALS registry and an assessment of expected case ascertainment. A dataset derivation meeting was held to establish the registry medical dataset.
Results:We report the results of the national stakeholder survey, case ascertainment assessment, and the derived dataset that have resulted in the current implementation of a Canadian registry of patients with ALS.
Conclusions:The development of this long sought-after resource is a significant step forward for the Canadian ALS patient and research communities that will result in more efficient clinical trial recruitment and advancements in our understanding of ALS in Canada.

The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) will give us an unprecedented opportunity to investigate the transient sky at radio wavelengths. In this paper we present VAST, an ASKAP survey for Variables and Slow Transients. VAST will exploit the wide-field survey capabilities of ASKAP to enable the discovery and investigation of variable and transient phenomena from the local to the cosmological, including flare stars, intermittent pulsars, X-ray binaries, magnetars, extreme scattering events, interstellar scintillation, radio supernovae, and orphan afterglows of gamma-ray bursts. In addition, it will allow us to probe unexplored regions of parameter space where new classes of transient sources may be detected. In this paper we review the known radio transient and variable populations and the current results from blind radio surveys. We outline a comprehensive program based on a multi-tiered survey strategy to characterise the radio transient sky through detection and monitoring of transient and variable sources on the ASKAP imaging timescales of 5 s and greater. We also present an analysis of the expected source populations that we will be able to detect with VAST.

How well do we prepare our graduate students for the diverse careers they pursue in teaching, research, and outside of academia? This is the second time Graduate Education has been a track in the TLC, and this year we have also incorporated topics related to professional development. Despite the diversity of our presentations, we arrived at a unifying theme for our track: we must prepare graduate students for the multiple arenas they will enter into after graduation. We discussed at length how most of our graduate students seek something other than the traditional, research-oriented model of graduate education that we experienced. They seek a graduate experience that is civically engaged, prepares them for teaching in addition to research, and is perhaps more connected to disciplines outside of political science. Either we provide graduate students a framework of knowledge consistent with these demands or they will be left to develop these skills through trial and error alone. In support of this goal, we urge systemic change to our professional institutions that will value and reward a more holistic approach to graduate education and professional development. Elements of such change can be found in the variety of presentations contained in our track.
