Composites of 0–20 vol% Ti-coated cBN (cBN@Ti) particles dispersed in WC–Ni were densified by spark plasma sintering under 50 MPa at 1300 °C. The cBN particles were distributed homogeneously with a Ti-rich interfacial layer between the cBN particles and WC–Ni matrix. Increasing cBN@Ti to 20 vol% decreased the sample densification, but all the composites were still >97.5% dense. The Vickers hardness and flexural strength initially increased and then decreased, reaching the maximum values of 1820 HV10 with 15 vol% cBN@Ti and 1500 MPa with 5 vol% cBN@Ti, respectively, whereas the fracture toughness KIC gradually increased from 8 to 13 MPa m1/2. For cutting rocks, the wear significantly decreased with 5–15 vol% cBN@Ti but increased with 20 vol% cBN@Ti because of cBN particles pull-out.

Single-crystal-like TiO2 is claimed to be a very promising material among various catalysts. In this study, the (N,F)-co-doped single-crystal-like TiO2 was prepared by a new molten mixing process in which the mixed nitrates were used both as a morphology modifier and an N-doping agent at the same time. The prepared samples also had well-developed (001) facet due to the addition of HF. The HF can also be an F doping agent to the material. The co-doping of N and F can diminish the band gap of TiO2 from 3.05 to 2.93 eV, therefore visible light can be used effectively by the material. In addition, NO and fluorine ions existing on the surface of the sample can also help its photocatalyticity. Therefore, the photocatalytic performance of the as-prepared sample was effectively improved.

As an important member of semiconducting transition metal oxides, MoO2 nanomaterials have many advantages in optical and electrical applications. However, MoO2 itself has no significant photocatalytic performance possibly because of its inferior conductivity and strong recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Here, we propose a facile, one-step pyrolysis method to prepare a novel C fibers@MoO2 nanoparticles core–shell composite, where the oxidative MoO2 nanoparticles in situ grew on the surface of conducting C fibers. Due to the compositing of MoO2 and C fibers, during photocatalysis tests, the recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs was effectively inhibited, and the lifetime of the photogenerated carries was efficiently prolonged, finally significantly improving the solar-driven photocatalytic activity on degrading various organic and inorganic pollutants in water, such as methylene blue, rhodamine B, phenol, and potassium dichromate, showing the great potential for environmental remediation by degrading toxic industrial chemicals in waste water under sunlight. Moreover, the composite presented good stability in composition and structure during the repeated use and long-term storage. In addition, this one-step growth method is an easy-to-handle, environmentally friendly, and low-cost synthesis method for large-scale production.

Due to the increasingly severe environmental pollution problems, the development of semiconductor photocatalysts is being extensively carried out because they have exhibited high activities for the degradation of many organic and inorganic pollutants. In this study, waxberry-like Ni11(HPO3)8(OH)6 microball photocatalysts with a diameter of 10–20 μm have been successfully synthesized via a solvothermal route by using NiSO4 as a Ni-source and NaH2PO2 as a P-source in a mixture of ethylene glycol and water under the optimized conditions with a Ni:P molar ratio of 1:2 at 200 °C for 16 h. The as-prepared photocatalysts were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller N2 adsorption, zeta potential, ultraviolet-visible (UV–vis) absorption, and photocatalysis tests. The decolourization of organic dyes, methylene blue and rhodamine B, under ultraviolet light over the as-prepared products reveals an excellent photocatalytic performance due to the good absorption for ultraviolet light.

Metallic phase-change materials (PCMs) attract much attention due to their high thermal conductivity in thermal energy storage. Our previous work reported a kind of Cu@Cr@Ni bilayer capsules, which could endure at least 1000 thermal cycles between 1323 and 1423 K without leakage, and might be a potential high-temperature metallic PCM. This study numerically investigates the thermal energy charging performance of Cu@Cr@Ni capsules for recovering high-temperature waste heat at both constant and periodically fluctuant heat transfer fluid temperatures. It was revealed that only a short and slight sloped melting platform existed in the curve of outlet temperature due to the ultrahigh thermal conductivity of copper; with higher inlet velocities, the outlet and mean temperatures of such PCM increased and meanwhile the energy transfer efficiency decreased; the outlet and mean temperatures of the PCM and the liquid fraction in it were rather insensitive to the period of the inlet temperature fluctuation; and the amplitude of inlet temperature fluctuation, ±50 K, was sharply reduced to 5 K due to the thermal damping of the PCM.

SrTiO3 is an important photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution under solar light, a promising way to solve energy shortage. However, a rapid and efficient method to synthesize high-performance SrTiO3 used for this purpose still remains a challenge. In this work, we successfully prepared SrTiO3 catalyst with narrowed band gap through a rapid laser-melting method of a limited reaction time to seconds. The prepared SrTiO3 catalyst, which has a band gap of 3.05 eV, presents enhanced photocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution under visible light. The evolution rate of laser-melted SrTiO3 is approximately 3.5 times higher than that of pristine SrTiO3. In addition, the magnetism in laser-melted SrTiO3 is also enhanced, which could not be observed in pristine SrTiO3, confirming the defective structure of the obtained laser-melted SrTiO3. The proposed laser-melting method will be a promising way to rapidly and efficiently synthesize homogeneous, solar-driven SrTiO3 photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution with rich defects and thus high-performance.

N-doped single-crystal-like TiO2 is claimed to be a very promising material among various catalytic. In this paper, N-doped single-crystal-like TiO2 (N-S-TiO2) samples were firstly prepared by molten salt method with urea and mixed nitrates as synergistic doping agents, therein, the mixed nitrates works also as a morphology modifier to form a single-crystal-like structure in the sample. The nitrogen content in the N-S-TiO2 sample could be improved because of the adding of NaNO3 and KNO3 mixed nitrates compared with using urea as a single nitrogen source. UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy analysis indicated that the nitrogen doped TiO2 has a red shift of the light absorption edge. The presence of N–O bonds on the surface of the N-S-TiO2 samples could be confirmed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The degradation efficiency of N-S-TiO2 to methylene blue under visible light is the best compared with different TiO2 samples without the treatment of mixed nitrates.

Tungsten oxide (WO3−x) nanomaterials with controlled morphology and composition were fabricated by thermal evaporation of WO3 and S powders at different temperatures in a vacuum tube furnace. At 850 °C the obtained green particle is still of the same monoclinic WO3 phase as that of the starting powder. At a temperature between 900 and 1100 °C, the resultant dark-blue products are particle-like clusters composed of numerous monoclinic WO2.90 short nanorods, but the clusters became looser and the nanorods grew somewhat longer as the temperature increased. At a temperature between 1150 and 1250 °C, elongated and thoroughly separate purple-red monoclinic W18O49 nanorods were obtained. The growth of the prepared WO3−x nanomaterials was controlled by a gas–solid mechanism. Their photocatalytic degradation on organic contaminants was evaluated by decomposing methylene blue (MB) in aqueous phase under sunlight, in which WO3 particles presented higher photocatalytic activity than its oxygen-deficient counterparts, WO2.90 and W18O49. But the W18O49 nanorods had higher adsorption ability to MB in all the samples.

Morphologically controllable copper sulfide (CuS) nanoneedle, nanowall, and nanosheet networks on copper substrates have been fabricated by a simple, facile, and fast method based on low-temperature chemical vapor deposition through simply adjusting the reaction conditions such as the temperature and flow rate of argon gas. The compositional and structural analyses indicated that all the obtained nano-networks were single-crystalline. And their growths were possibly controlled by a solid–liquid–solid mechanism. The photocatalytic activities of the different shaped CuS nanostructures have been evaluated by their photodegradation on rhodamine B and methylene blue in aqueous phase, which revealed that in both cases the CuS nanoneedles nano-network exhibited better performance than the other two nanostructures.

We reported a simple and convenient method to determine the film thickness by nanoindentation tests. This method starts from the analysis of the unloading portion of the measured nanoindentation load-displacement curves according to a quadratic polynomial, P = α(h − hf)2 − P0, where P is the indentation load, P0 is the virtual load used to consider the effect of the residual contact stress, h is the indenter displacement (penetration depth), hf is the final displacement after complete unloading which should be determined by curve fitting, and α is a constant. Then the best-fit value of the parameter P0 is plotted as a function of the maximum penetration depth, hmax. Such a P0 versus hmax curve may pass through a minimum, and hmax corresponding to this minimum would be equal to the film thickness value.

Dual cation (Yb + Y)-stabilized α-sialon ceramics with either stoichiometric composition or nonstoichiometric composition that yield less than 3 vol% of an additional intergranular liquid/glass phase were consolidated by spark plasma sintering (SPS). This process allows very fast heating and cooling, thus providing a unique possibility to monitor and manipulate the kinetics of phase transformation and grain growth during sintering. Below a temperature threshold, full densification and complete α-sialon formation are accompanied by very limited grain growth. The grain growth kinetics were investigated both by post heat-treatment of SPS pre-consolidated monophasic α-sialon bodies consisting of sub-micron sized equiaxed grains in a conventional graphite furnace using extended holding times (hours) and directly rapid annealing in the SPS apparatus above the temperature threshold (within minutes). Post heat treatment in the graphite furnace yielded in situ reinforced microstructures consisting of interlocking elongated grains only in the presence of an additional intergranular liquid/glass phase. Direct annealing by SPS process yielded in situ reinforced microstructures whether or not an additional liquid/glass was involved. The former microstructures are formed via the static Ostwald ripening mechanism whereas the latter ones are generated via a dynamic ripening mechanism. This demonstrates that the dynamic ripening provides an efficient means of developing in situ reinforced microstructure in α-sialon ceramics with improved mechanical properties.

In situ reinforced microstructures with well-dispersed elongated grains, up to 10 μm in length, embedded in matrices consisting of submicron equiaxed grains, were developed by hot pressing Y-, Yb-, and (Y + Yb)-doped a-sialon ceramics containing approximately 3 vol% extra liquid phase at a comparatively low sintering temperature, 1800 °C. The liquid phase, thermodynamically compatible with a-sialon, was introduced by raising the oxygen content of an already oxygen-rich α-sialon composition, e.g., by increasing the O/N ratio in RExSi12-(3x+n) Al3x+nOnN16−n. Two different α–Si3N4 precursor powders, one fine-grained and one coarse, and one coarse β–Si3N4 powder were used, and the influence of particle size and crystalline modification of the precursor Si3N4 powder on the formation of elongated a-sialon grains was investigated. The formation of elongated α-sialon grains was promoted by introducing an extra liquid phase and by using a fine-grained α–Si3N4 powder, whereas the coarse β–Si3N4 powder did not yield any elongated grains at all. The obtained in situ reinforced α-sialon ceramics were both hard and tough, with a Vickers hardness and a fracture toughness of 21 GPa and approximately 5 MPa m1/2, respectively.

The abnormal grain growth in α–sialon ceramics was investigated. The preparations had stoichiometric compositions on the oxygen-rich phase boundary, and they were stabilized by Y, Nd, Sm, Dy, and Yb, respectively. Specimens were prepared from α–Si3N4 as precursor powder by applying conventional hot pressing and a novel rapid consolidation process, namely spark plasma sintering (SPS). Single-phase α–sialon ceramics with in situ reinforced bimodal microstructure, i.e., large elongated grains embedded in a matrix consisting of small equiaxed grains, were obtained above 1750 °C in all systems compacted by SPS and above 1800 °C in systems stabilized by Nd and Sm but not Dy, Y, or Yb by a two-step hot-pressing procedure. It was observed that the formation of abnormally grown α–sialon grains was strongly temperature-dependent, indicating that it was encouraged by the formation of a transient liquid phase that stimulated the dissolution of any remaining nitride precursors and early formed small α–sialon grains and sequentially facilitated supersaturation by the α–sialon constituents. The presence of elongated grains improves fracture resistance in the obtained materials.
