Recent developments in the categorical foundations of universal algebra have given an impetus to an understanding of the lambda calculus coming from categorical logic: an interpretation is a semi-closed algebraic theory. Scott's representation theorem is then completely natural and leads to a precise Fundamental Theorem showing the essential equivalence between the categorical and more familiar notions.

Given a set $\mathcal{D}$ of q documents, the Longest Common Substring (LCS) problem asks, for any integer 2 ⩽ k ⩽ q, the longest substring that appears in k documents. LCS is a well-studied problem having a wide range of applications in Bioinformatics: from microarrays to DNA sequences alignments and analysis. This problem has been solved by Hui (2000International Journal of Computer Science and Engineering15 73–76) by using a famous constant-time solution to the Lowest Common Ancestor (LCA) problem in trees coupled with the use of suffix trees.

In this article, we present a simple method for solving the LCS problem by using suffix trees (STs) and classical union-find data structures. In turn, we show how this simple algorithm can be adapted in order to work with other space efficient data structures such as the enhanced suffix arrays (ESA) and the compressed suffix tree.

The paper tries to extend some results of the classical Descriptive Set Theory to as many countably based T0-spaces (cb0-spaces) as possible. Along with extending some central facts about Borel, Luzin and Hausdorff hierarchies of sets we also consider the more general case of k-partitions. In particular, we investigate the difference hierarchy of k-partitions and the fine hierarchy closely related to the Wadge hierarchy.

One of the best-known methods for discriminating λ-terms with respect to β-convertibility is due to Corrado Böhm. The idea is to compute the infinitary normal form of a λ-term M, the Böhm Tree (BT) of M. If λ-terms M, N have distinct BTs, then M ≠βN, that is, M and N are not β-convertible. But what if their BTs coincide? For example, all fixed point combinators (FPCs) have the same BT, namely λx.x(x(x(. . .))).

We introduce a clocked λ-calculus, an extension of the classical λ-calculus with a unary symbol τ used to witness the β-steps needed in the normalization to the BT. This extension is infinitary strongly normalizing, infinitary confluent and the unique infinitary normal forms constitute enriched BTs, which we call clocked BTs. These are suitable for discriminating a rich class of λ-terms having the same BTs, including the well-known sequence of Böhm's FPCs.

We further increase the discrimination power in two directions. First, by a refinement of the calculus: the atomic clocked λ-calculus, where we employ symbols τp that also witness the (relative) positions p of the β-steps. Second, by employing a localized version of the (atomic) clocked BTs that has even more discriminating power.

This paper considers ∃*∀* prenex sentences of pure first-order predicate calculus with equality. This is the set of formulas which Ramsey's treated in a famous article of 1930. We demonstrate that the satisfiability problem and the problem of existence of arbitrarily large models for these formulas can be reduced to the satisfiability problem for ∃*∀* prenex sentences of Set Theory (in the relators ∈, =).

We present two satisfiability-preserving (in a broad sense) translations Φ ↦ $\dot{\Phi}$ and Φ ↦ Φσ of ∃*∀* sentences from pure logic to well-founded Set Theory, so that if $\dot{\Phi}$ is satisfiable (in the domain of Set Theory) then so is Φ, and if Φσ is satisfiable (again, in the domain of Set Theory) then Φ can be satisfied in arbitrarily large finite structures of pure logic.

It turns out that |$\dot{\Phi}$| = $\mathcal{O}$(|Φ|) and |Φσ| = $\mathcal{O}$(|Φ|2).

Our main result makes use of the fact that ∃*∀* sentences, even though constituting a decidable fragment of Set Theory, offer ways to describe infinite sets. Such a possibility is exploited to glue together infinitely many models of increasing cardinalities of a given ∃*∀* logical formula, within a single pair of infinite sets.

In this article we describe a bunch of probability logics with quantifiers over events, and develop primary techniques for proving computational complexity results (in terms of m-degrees) about these logics, mainly over discrete probability spaces. Also the article contains a comparison with some other probability logics and a discussion of interesting analogies with research in the metamathematics of Boolean algebras, demonstrating a number of attractive features and intuitive advantages of the present proposal.

The continuity problem, i.e., the question whether effective maps between effectively given topological spaces are effectively continuous, is reconsidered. In earlier work, it was shown that this is always the case, if the effective map also has a witness for non-inclusion. The extra condition does not have an obvious topological interpretation. As is shown in the present paper, it appears naturally where in the classical proof that sequentially continuous maps are continuous, the Axiom of Choice is used. The question is therefore whether the witness condition appears in the general continuity theorem only for this reason, i.e., whether effective operators are effectively sequentially continuous. For two large classes of spaces covering all important applications, it is shown that this is indeed the case. The general question, however, remains open.

Spaces in this investigation are in general not required to be Hausdorff. They only need to satisfy the weaker T0 separation condition

We propose a relational computing paradigm based on Eilenberg machines, an effective version of Eilenberg's X-machines suitable for general non-deterministic computation. An Eilenberg machine generalizes a finite-state automaton, seen as its control component, with a computation component over a data domain specified as a relational algebra, its actions being interpreted as binary relations over the data domain. We show various strategies for the sequential simulation of our relational machines, using variants of the reactive engine. In a particular case of finite machines, we show that bottom-up search yields an efficient complete simulator.

Relational machines may be composed in a modular fashion, since atomic actions of one machine can be mapped to the characteristic relation of other relational machines acting as its parameters.

The control components of machines can be compiled from regular expressions. Several such translations have been proposed in the literature, which we briefly survey.

A dyadic subbase S of a topological space X is a subbase consisting of a countable collection of pairs of open subsets that are exteriors of each other. If a dyadic subbase S is proper, then we can construct a dcpo DS in which X is embedded. We study properties of S with respect to two aspects. (i) Whether the dcpo DS is consistently complete depends on not only S itself but also the enumeration of S. We give a characterization of S that induces the consistent completeness of DS regardless of its enumeration. (ii) If the space X is regular Hausdorff, then X is embedded in the minimal limit set of DS. We construct an example of a Hausdorff but non-regular space with a dyadic subbase S such that the minimal limit set of DS is empty.

We study logic in the light of the Kantian distinction between analytic (untyped, meaningless, locative) answers and synthetic (typed, meaningful, spiritual) questions. Which is specially relevant to proof-theory: in a proof-net, the upper part is locative, whereas the lower part is spiritual: a posteriori (explicit) as far as correctness is concerned, a priori (implicit) for questions dealing with consequence, typically cut-elimination. The divides locative/spiritual and explicit/implicit give rise to four blocks which are enough to explain the whole logical activity.
