We construct a geometrico-symbolic version of the natural extension of the random $\beta $-transformation introduced by Dajani and Kraaikamp [Random $\beta $-expansions. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys. 23(2) (2003) 461–479]. This construction provides a new proof of the existence of a unique absolutely continuous invariant probability measure for the random $\beta $-transformation, and an expression for its density. We then prove that this natural extension is a Bernoulli automorphism, generalizing to the random case the result of Smorodinsky [$\beta $-automorphisms are Bernoulli shifts. Acta Math. Acad. Sci. Hungar. 24 (1973), 273–278] about the greedy transformation.

We use Gaussian measure-preserving systems to prove the existence and genericity of Lebesgue measure-preserving transformations $T:[0,1]\rightarrow [0,1]$ which exhibit both mixing and rigidity behavior along families of asymptotically linearly independent sequences. Let $\unicode{x3bb} _1,\ldots ,\unicode{x3bb} _N\in [0,1]$ and let $\phi _1,\ldots ,\phi _N:\mathbb N\rightarrow \mathbb Z$ be asymptotically linearly independent (that is, for any $(a_1,\ldots ,a_N)\in \mathbb Z^N\setminus \{\vec 0\}$, $\lim _{k\rightarrow \infty }|\sum _{j=1}^Na_j\phi _j(k)|=\infty $). Then the class of invertible Lebesgue measure-preserving transformations $T:[0,1]\rightarrow [0,1]$ for which there exists a sequence $(n_k)_{k\in \mathbb {N}}$ in $\mathbb {N}$ with for any measurable $A,B\subseteq [0,1]$ and any $j\in \{1,\ldots ,N\}$, is generic. This result is a refinement of a result due to Stëpin (Theorem 2 in [Spectral properties of generic dynamical systems. Math. USSR-Izv. 29(1) (1987), 159–192]) and a generalization of a result due to Bergelson, Kasjan, and Lemańczyk (Corollary F in [Polynomial actions of unitary operators and idempotent ultrafilters. Preprint, 2014, arXiv:1401.7869]).

In this paper, we discuss a connection between geometric measure theory and number theory. This method brings a new point of view for some number-theoretic problems concerning digit expansions. Among other results, we show that for each integer k, there is a number $M>0$ such that if $b_{1},\ldots ,b_{k}$ are multiplicatively independent integers greater than M, there are infinitely many integers whose base $b_{1},b_{2},\ldots ,b_{k}$ expansions all do not have any zero digits.

We show that the complete positive entropy (CPE) class $\alpha $ of Barbieri and García-Ramos contains a one-dimensional subshift for all countable ordinals $\alpha $ , that is, the process of alternating topological and transitive closure on the entropy pairs relation of a subshift can end on an arbitrary ordinal. This is the composition of three constructions. We first realize every ordinal as the length of an abstract ‘close-up’ process on a countable compact space. Next, we realize any abstract process on a compact zero-dimensional metrizable space as the process started from a shift-invariant relation on a subshift, the crucial construction being the implementation of every compact metrizable zero-dimensional space as an open invariant quotient of a subshift. Finally, we realize any shift-invariant relation E on a subshift X as the entropy pair relation of a supershift $Y \supset X$ , and under strong technical assumptions, we can make the CPE process on Y end on the same ordinal as the close-up process of E.

The Julia set of the exponential family $E_{\kappa }:z\mapsto \kappa e^z$ , $\kappa>0$ was shown to be the entire complex plane when $\kappa>1/e$ essentially by Misiurewicz. Later, Devaney and Krych showed that for $0<\kappa \leq 1/e$ the Julia set is an uncountable union of pairwise disjoint simple curves tending to infinity. Bergweiler generalized the result of Devaney and Krych for a three-dimensional analogue of the exponential map called the Zorich map. We show that the Julia set of certain Zorich maps with symmetry is the whole of $\mathbb {R}^3$ , generalizing Misiurewicz’s result. Moreover, we show that the periodic points of the Zorich map are dense in $\mathbb {R}^3$ and that its escaping set is connected, generalizing a result of Rempe. We also generalize a theorem of Ghys, Sullivan and Goldberg on the measurable dynamics of the exponential.
