Objectives
Language disturbances are the core symptoms of schizophrenia [Crow,2000]. Considering the influence of migration on the symptoms of schizophrenia [Bhugra, Gupta,2011] and few studies on the interaction of schizophrenia and bilingualism [Bersudsky, et al.,2005], we hope to clarify the linguistic profile of disorder and emphasize the role of language in schizophrenia research.
AimTo examine the linguistic features of schizophrenia in the first (L1) and the second (L2) languages, particularly in fluency as the ability to cope with native and nonnative pragmatics.
MethodsAmong sixty Russian immigrants to Israel diagnosed with schizophrenia, ten Russian-Hebrew fluent bilinguals met criteria for inclusion in the study (age: M=33.8,s.d.=11.0; length of residence: M=14.6,s.d.=6.8; time of immigration to diagnosis:M=5.3,s.d=3.9; PANSS Total score: M = 94.9,s.d = 9.8). Interviews were analyzed using clinical, linguistic and fluency speech markers. Statistical evaluation included t-test for dependent samples, two-way ANOVA(Fisher LSD post-hoc test).
ResultsThe mean length of language samples demonstrated more productivity in L1 (Table1). Clinical speech markers associated with thought disorders were similarly represented in both languages. Linguistic markers of schizophrenia occurred more often in L2. Discourse markers, as bilingual phenomenona, reflected more dysfluency in L1.
Conclusions1) The higher frequency of linguistic schizophrenia markers in L2 shows more impairments in the syntax/semantic components of language, where different neural representations may underlay the two languages in a bilingual brain damaged by schizophrenia. 2) The higher frequency of fluency markers in L1 reflects attempts to maintain verbal fluency, evidenced by the use of L2 lexical items, which afford a compensatory resource for communicative discourse in schizophrenia.

Aims
Recent findings in basic scientific research such as neurobiological and neuroimaging studies have suggested common pathways for food as well as drug intake. It was hypothesized that both compete for the same brain reward sites and that a higher BMI may be associated with lower substance use. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and substance use in a large sample of young male adults.
Design and participantsThe sample consisted of 1,902 18-year-old males of a province of Austria in a naturalistic cross-sectional setting.
MeasurementsQuestionnaires were administered to assess alcohol dependence (CAGE) and nicotine dependence (HSI). Urine samples were collected to assess the prevalence of recent illicit drug use. Associations between BMI and substance use were calculated by means of logistic regression analyses.
FindingsAn inverse relationship between BMI and illicit substance use was found. This relationship remained significant after adjusting for possible confounding factors such as level of education, nicotine dependence, breath carbon monoxide (CO) levels and alcohol abuse and dependence. No significant association was found between BMI and nicotine and alcohol dependence.
ConclusionsA higher BMI was associated with lower illicit drug use in our sample of young adult males. As BMI increases rates of illicit drug use decrease. These results provide further evidence for the hypothesis that food and drugs may compete for the same brain reward sites.

Introduction
Alcohol dependence is a complex psychiatric disorder.
ObjectivesTo investigate the role of temperament on the course of alcohol dependence.
AimsTo further investigate the role of temperaments in alcohol dependent patients and to analyse the differences in relevant clinical features in correlation with the different temperament distributions.
MethodsThe patients‘case files of 116 alcohol dependent patients, according to ICD-10 and DSM-IV-TR, admitted to the Vienna General Hospital between 02/08 and 03/09, were examined retrospectively. The brief-TEMPS-M auto-questionnaire was used to assess the temperamental distribution. The dimensions of alcohol dependence have been assessed using the Lesch Alcoholism Typology, a computerized structured interview. The potential effect of temperamental scores on various outcomes describing the course of illness is investigated using multi-variable regression models.
ResultsCyclothymic score was the only temperament which significantly influenced the age of onset of alcohol abuse and age of onset of alcohol dependence. Backward selection among temperaments exhibits depressive temperament as most important effect regarding the likelihood of suicide-attempts in the patient‘s case history and anxious temperament as most important effect regarding having psychiatric treatment focusing on alcohol dependence prior to current in- or outpatient stay.
ConclusionDominant cyclothymic, but also depressive and anxious temperament, seem to be negative predictors for the course of illness in alcohol dependence.

Summary
The science of studying diamond inclusions for understanding Earth history has developed significantly over the past decades, with new instrumentation and techniques applied to diamond sample archives revealing the stories contained within diamond inclusions. This chapter reviews what diamonds can tell us about the deep carbon cycle over the course of Earth’s history. It reviews how the geochemistry of diamonds and their inclusions inform us about the deep carbon cycle, the origin of the diamonds in Earth’s mantle, and the evolution of diamonds through time.

The large deformations of an initially-ellipsoidal capsule in a simple shear flow are studied by coupling a boundary integral method for the internal and external flows and a finite-element method for the capsule wall motion. Oblate and prolate spheroids are considered (initial aspect ratios: 0.5 and 2) in the case where the internal and external fluids have the same viscosity and the revolution axis of the initial spheroid lies in the shear plane. The influence of the membrane mechanical properties (mechanical law and ratio of shear to area dilatation moduli) on the capsule behaviour is investigated. Two regimes are found depending on the value of a capillary number comparing viscous and elastic forces. At low capillary numbers, the capsule tumbles, behaving mostly like a solid particle. At higher capillary numbers, the capsule has a fluid-like behaviour and oscillates in the shear flow while its membrane continuously rotates around its deformed shape. During the tumbling-to-swinging transition, the capsule transits through an almost circular profile in the shear plane for which a long axis can no longer be defined. The critical transition capillary number is found to depend mainly on the initial shape of the capsule and on its shear modulus, and weakly on the area dilatation modulus. Qualitatively, oblate and prolate capsules are found to behave similarly, particularly at large capillary numbers when the influence of the initial state fades out. However, the capillary number at which the transition occurs is significantly lower for oblate spheroids.

The motion and deformation of a spherical elastic capsule freely suspended in a simple shear flow is studied numerically, focusing on the effect of the internal-to-external viscosity ratio. The three-dimensional fluid–structure interactions are modelled coupling a boundary integral method (for the internal and external fluid motion) with a finite element method (for the membrane deformation). For low viscosity ratios, the internal viscosity affect the capsule deformation. Conversely, for large viscosity ratios, the slowing effect of the internal motion lowers the overall capsule deformation; the deformation is asymptotically independent of the flow strength and membrane behaviour. An important result is that increasing the internal viscosity leads to membrane compression and possibly buckling. Above a critical value of the viscosity ratio, compression zones are found on the capsule membrane for all flow strengths. This shows that very viscous capsules tend to buckle easily.

Recently reported results from latest Mars Orbiters and Rovers missions are transforming our opinion about the red planet. That dry and inhospitable planet reported in the past is becoming a wetter planet with high probabilities of water existence in the past. Nowadays, some results seem to indicate the presence of water beneath the Mars surface. But also mineralogy studies by NASA Opportunity Rover report iron oxides and hydroxides precipitates on Endurance Crater. Sedimentary deposits have been identified at Meridiani Planum. These deposits must have generated in a dune aqueous acidic and oxidizing environment. Similarities appear when we study Rio Tinto, and acidic river under the control of iron.
The discovery of extremophiles on Earth widened the window of possibilities for life to develop in the Universe, and as a consequence on Mars and other planetary bodies with astrobiological interest. The compilation of data produced by the ongoing missions offers an interested view for life possibilities to exist: signs of an early wet Mars and rather recent volcanic activity as well as ground morphological characteristics that seem to be promoted by liquid water. The discovery of important accumulations of sulfates and the existence of iron minerals such as jarosite in rocks of sedimentary origin has allowed specific terrestrial models to come into focus. Río Tinto (Southwestern Spain, Iberian Pyritic Belt) is an extreme acidic environment, product of the chemolithotrophic activity of micro-organisms that thrive in the massive pyrite-rich deposits of the Iberian Pyritic Belt. Some particular protective environments should house the organic molecules and bacterial life forms in harsh environments such as Mars surface supporting microniches inside precipitated minerals or inside rocks. Terrestrial analogues could help us to afford the comprehension of habitability (on other planetary bodies).
We are reporting here the multidisciplinary study of some endolithic niches inside salt deposits used by phototrophs for taking advantage of sheltering particular light wavelengths. These acidic salts deposits located in Río Tinto shelter life forms that are difficult to visualize by eye. This interdisciplinary field analogue campaign was conducted in the framework of the CAREX FP7 EC programme.

The Urban Areas Working Group is part of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s EMRAS II (Environmental Modelling for Radiation Safety) Programme. The goal of this Working Group is to test and improve the capabilities of models used in assessment of radioactive contamination in urban settings, including dispersion and deposition events, short- and long-term contaminant redistribution following deposition events, and potential countermeasures or remediation efforts for reducing human exposures and doses. The Working Group has developed three modeling exercises, which are designed to permit intercomparison of model predictions and, in one case, comparison of model predictions with measurements. This paper describes the scenarios and provides comparisons of initial modeling results. Reasons for similarities and discrepancies among model predictions are discussed in terms of the modeling approaches, models, and parameter values used by different assessors. Preliminary conclusions emphasize the value of explaining individual approaches and the importance of understanding the effects of different assumptions and parameter values on the modeling results.

Objective
In 1990, Fontan, Kirklin, and colleagues published equations for survival after the so-called “Perfect Fontan” operation. After 1988, we evolved a protocol using an internal or external polytetraflouroethylene tube of 16 to 19 millimetres diameter placed from the inferior caval vein to either the right or left pulmonary artery along with a bidirectional cava-pulmonary connection. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that a “perfect” outcome is routinely achievable in the current era when using a standardized surgical procedure.
MethodsBetween 1 January, 1988, and 12 December, 2005, 112 patients underwent the Fontan procedure using an internal or external polytetraflouroethylene tube plus a bidirectional cava-pulmonary connection, the latter usually having been constructed as a previous procedure. This constituted 45% of our overall experience in constructing the Fontan circulation between 1988 and 1996, and 96% of the experience between 1996 and 2005. Among all surviving patients, the median follow-up was 7.3 years. We calculated the expected survival for an optimal candidate, given from the initial equations, and compared this to our entire experience in constructing the Fontan circulation.
ResultsAn internal tube was utilized in 61 patients, 97% of whom were operated prior to 1998, and an external tube in 51 patients, the latter accounting for 95% of all operations since 1999. At 1, 5, 10 and 15 years, survival of the entire cohort receiving polytetraflouroethylene tubes is superimposable on the curve calculated for a “perfect” outcome. Freedom from replacement or revision of the tube was 97% at 10 years.
ConclusionUsing a standardized operative procedure, combining a bidirectional cavopulmonary connection with a polytetraflouroethylene tube placed from the inferior caval vein to the pulmonary arteries for nearly all patients with functionally univentricular hearts, early and late survival within the “perfect” outcome as predicted by the initial equations of Fontan and Kirklin is routinely achievable in the current era. The need for late revision or replacement of the tube is rare.
