Gas injection into a liquid cross-flow is examined for the case where the gas is injected beneath a horizontal flat surface. For moderate Froude numbers, the gas pocket that is formed will rise toward the flow boundary under the action of buoyancy, a condition that is conducive to the formation of gas layers for friction-drag reduction on the surface. At the location of gas injection, a plume whose geometry is related to the mass and momentum flux of the injected gas and liquid cross-flow is formed, and the influence of buoyancy is minimal. However, as the gas pocket convects downstream, buoyancy brings the gas back upward to the flow boundary, and leads to the bifurcation of the pocket into two distinct branches, forming a stable ‘V’-shape. Under some conditions, the flow between the two gas branches is almost entirely liquid, while for others there exists a bubbly flow or a continuous sheet of gas between the branches. The sweep angle and cross-sectional geometry of the gas branches are related to free-stream speed and boundary-layer thickness of the liquid cross-flow, the mass-injection rate of the gas, the diameter of the injection orifice and the gas outlet mean velocity and gas–jet angle. Data for a range of experimental conditions are used to scale the flow and results are compared to numerical computations of the flow, and these data are used to illustrate the underlying flow processes responsible leading to the formation the stable and straight gas branches. A simple model based on the balance of forces around a stable gas branch is presented and used to scale the observed data, and we use the results of this analysis and the computations to discuss how the process of gas injection may interact with the formation of the stable gas pockets farther downstream.

The solid-state reaction of yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG, Y3Al5O12) during the heat treatment of Y2O3 and Al2O3 powder mixtures, differing in particle size and size ratio, was quantified using in situ high-temperature x-ray analysis and Rietveld refinement. Y2O3 particle size has the most profound effect on YAG formation. When the Y2O3 particle size was decreased from 5000 to 30 nm (on reaction with 270 nm Al2O3), the YAG formation rate increased from 20 to 48 vol% min−1 over the temperature range of 1350–1450 °C. In this case, the final YAG content increased from 75 to 91 vol%. A simple model that includes the reactant particle coordination number, and thus particle size ratio, shows that when the size ratio (dA/dY) is >1 diffusion through the alumina powder is rate controlling whereas when the ratio is <1, diffusion through the yttria, intermediate phases, and YAG is rate controlling.

The recent outbreak of H1N1 has provided the scientific community with a sad but timely opportunity to understand the influence of socioeconomic determinants on H1N1 pandemic mortality. To this end, we have used data collected from 341 US counties to model H1N1 deaths/1000 using 12 socioeconomic predictors to discover why certain counties reported fewer H1N1 deaths compared to other counties. These predictors were then used to build a decision tree. The decision tree developed was then used to predict H1N1 mortality for the whole of the USA. Our estimate of 7667 H1N1 deaths are in accord with the lower bound of the CDC estimate of 8870 deaths. In addition to the H1N1 death estimates, we have listed possible counties to be targeted for health-related interventions. The respective state/county authorities can use these results as the basis to target and optimize the distribution of public health resources.

Extracellular recordings from single neurons have been made from presumed area 21a of the cerebral cortex of the cat, anesthetized with N2O/O2/sodium pentobarbitone mixture. Area 21a contains mainly a representation of a central horizontal strip of contralateral visual field about 5 deg above and below the horizontal meridian.
Excitatory discharge fields of area 21a neurons were substantially (or slightly but significantly) larger than those of neurons at corresponding eccentricities in areas 17, 19, or 18, respectively. About 95% of area 21a neurons could be activated through either eye and the input from the ipsilateral eye was commonly dominant. Over 90% and less than 10% of neurons had, respectively, C-type and S-type receptive-field organization. Virtually all neurons were orientation-selective and the mean width at half-height of the orientation tuning curves at 52.9 deg was not significantly different from that of neurons in areas 17 and 18. About 30% of area 21a neurons had preferred orientations within 15 deg of the vertical.
The mean direction-selectivity index (32.8%) of area 21a neurons was substantially lower than the indices for neurons in areas 17 or 18. Only a few neurons exhibited moderately strong end-zone inhibition. Area 21a neurons responded poorly to fast-moving stimuli and the mean preferred velocity at about 12.5 deg/s was not significantly different from that for area 17 neurons.
Selective pressure block of Y fibers in contralateral optic nerve resulted in a small but significant reduction in the preferred velocities of neurons activated via the Y-blocked eye. By contrast, removal of the Y input did not produce significant changes in the spatial organization of receptive fields (S or C type), the size of the discharge fields, the width of orientation tuning curves, or direction-selectivity indices.
Our results are consistent with the idea that area 21a receives its principal excitatory input from area 17 and is involved mainly in form rather than motion analysis.

General intelligence is largely based on two distinguishable mental abilities: crystallized intelligence (gC) and fluid reasoning ability (gF). The target article authors' P-FIT model emphasizes a network of regions throughout the brain as the neural basis for fluid reasoning and/or working memory. However, it provides little significant insight into the neural basis of gC, or how or why gC is more stable than gF across the life span.

The Ca intake and food sources of Chinese postmenopausal women are quite different from those of their Western counterparts. But, little information on Ca metabolism is available in Chinese populations. We determined true fractional calcium absorption (TFCA), true Ca absorption ( = TFCA × Ca intake, Va), urinary Ca excretion (Vu) and the difference between Va and Vu (Va − u), in response to three dietary Ca intake levels. Twenty-one healthy postmenopausal Chinese women aged 49–64 years were recruited for this randomized crossover trial from a general community, Guangzhou, China. Subjects were randomly assigned to receive 0, 500 and 1000 mg Ca/d for 5 weeks separated by 2-week washout periods. TFCA using Ca stable isotopes, total urinary Ca excretion and Ca intake were determined after 4 weeks of adaptation. Mean values for total Ca intake (Vi) of the three phases were 391 (sd 197), 880 (sd 130) and 1382 (sd 160) mg/d. On usual diet, TFCA, Vu, Va and Va − u were 0·57 (sd 0·12), 175 (sd 59) mg/d, 216 (sd 98) mg/d and 41 (sd 99) mg/d, respectively. With the supplementations of 500 and 1000 mg Ca/d, TFCA significantly decreased to 0·52 (sd 0·12) and 0·43 (sd 0·13) (P < 0·001); whereas urinary Ca (P = 0·003), Va and Va − u increased significantly (P < 0·001). Using a mixed-effects nonlinear regression model, it was estimated that Va − u was approaching a plateau when mean Ca intake reached 1300 mg/d. In conclusion, the present findings suggest postmenopausal Chinese women have high Ca absorption efficiency and a mean Ca intake of about 1300 mg/d is required to maximize the Va − u.

We report on directly deposited plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) nanocrystalline silicon (nc-Si:H) ambipolar thin-film transistors (TFTs) fabricated at 260 °C. The ambipolar operation is achieved adopting Cr metal contacts with high-quality nc-Si:H channel layer, which creates highly conductive Cr silicided drain/source contacts, reducing both electron and hole injection barriers. The n-channel nc-Si:H TFTs show a field-effect electron mobility (meFE) of 150 cm2/Vs, threshold voltage (VT) ~ 2 V, subthreshold slope (S) ~0.3 V/dec, and ON/OFF current ratio of more than 107, while the p-channel nc-Si:H TFTs show a field-effect hole mobility (mhFE) of 26 cm2/Vs, VT ~ -3.8 V, S ~0.25 V/dec, and ON/OFF current ratio of more than 106. Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) logic integrated with two ambipolar nc-Si:H TFTs shows reasonable transfer characteristics. The results presented here demonstrate that low-temperature nc-Si:H TFT technology is feasible for total integration of active-matrix TFT backplanes.

Ge2Sb2Te5 is under intense investigation for phase-change memory devices, including rewriteable DVDs where optical illumination is used to switch between the glassy and crystalline states. We investigate the influence of optical irradiation on amorphous phase. Many chalcogenides display photo-oxidation, photodarkening or photo-bleaching, but little has been reported on the Ge-Sb-Te system. Using spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) and secondary ion mass spectrometry, we determine that the samples have a strong tendency to photo-oxidize; if this is not accounted for, then the analysis of SE data appears to show photodarkening. Other authors recently reported photodarkening in nonstoichiometric GexSb20-xTe80 [Pamukchieva et al., Proc. SPIE 5581, 608 (2004); Pamukchieva et al., J. Optoelectron. Adv. Mater 7, 1277 (2005)], but our analysis suggests that the changes were also the result of photo-oxidation. The oxide has lower value of (n, k) than Ge2Sb2Te5, and can be etched by hydrofluoric acid or water. The photo-oxidation is presumably the result of free carrier generation in the Ge2Sb2Te5. Our observation of negligible photodarkening is consistent with previous works that found less photodarkening in tellurides compared with selenides or sulfides, and that an increase in the mean coordination number, here by Ge addition, further reduces the photodarkening effect.

Nutrigenomics is the study of how constituents of the diet interact with genes, and their products, to alter phenotype and, conversely, how genes and their products metabolise these constituents into nutrients, antinutrients, and bioactive compounds. Results from molecular and genetic epidemiological studies indicate that dietary unbalance can alter gene–nutrient interactions in ways that increase the risk of developing chronic disease. The interplay of human genetic variation and environmental factors will make identifying causative genes and nutrients a formidable, but not intractable, challenge. We provide specific recommendations for how to best meet this challenge and discuss the need for new methodologies and the use of comprehensive analyses of nutrient–genotype interactions involving large and diverse populations. The objective of the present paper is to stimulate discourse and collaboration among nutrigenomic researchers and stakeholders, a process that will lead to an increase in global health and wellness by reducing health disparities in developed and developing countries.

Thermal oxide covered silicon wafers were polished with slurries containing (i) only nano-sized particles of ceria, monodispersed colloidal spherical silica, or hematite of different shapes, (ii) a binary mixture of the same nano-sized and uniform colloidal particles, and (iii) the same colloids coated with nano-sized ceria. The procedures for the preparation of the coated particles are described in this article. The polish rates and surface qualities were in all cases higher with mixed slurries, and even more so with coated particles. The performance of composite systems also depended on the shape of the particles, cubic ones being the most and spheres least efficient. Experimental results indicated that ceria in mixtures was responsible for the enhanced polish process, while core materials enhanced a closer contact of nano-sized particles with the wafer. In general, the polish rates were higher with the larger contact area between the abrasives and the wafer. This mechanism was further verified by polishing oxide wafers on 3-M fixed abrasive pads, which have cylindrical structures with flat surfaces.

An electromigration study has determined the lifetime characteristics and failure mode of dual-damascene Cu/oxide interconnects at temperatures ranging between 200 and 325 °C at a current density of 1.0 MA/cm2. A novel test structure design is used which incorporates a repeated chain of “Blech-type” line elements. The large interconnect ensemble permits a statistical approach to addressing interconnect reliability issues using typical failure analysis tools such as focused ion beam imaging. The larger sample size of the test structure thus enables efficient identification of “early failure” or extrinsic modes of interconnect failure associated with process development. The analysis so far indicates that two major damage modes are observable: (1) via-voiding and (2) voiding within the damascene trench.

We report experimental findings on the thermal-induced stress-voiding observed during epitaxial CoSi2 formation on patterned Si(100) wafers associated with the Co/Ti-interposing layer scheme [1–6]. The first rapid thermal process (RTP) in a typical SALICIDE process was studied by varying the temperature and the RTP ramp-up rate. Based on ex-situ cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (XTEM), crystal defects were observed at shallow trench isolation (STI)/Si and gate spacer/Si edges after annealing at temperatures greater than 520°C. In addition, isothermal anneals for various time periods resulted in increased encroachment of an ultra-thin CoSi2-phase at the STI/Si edge. Higher temperature anneals also resulted in a corresponding increase in void size. In addition, higher ramp-up rates led to a thicker CoSi2 “pocket” film at the tensile-stressed STI/Si edge, aligned epitaxially along the {111}-habit planes. Our attempts to bypass the CoSi formation in order to alleviate the anomalous Si diffusion was found to be irrelevant to the voiding issue, due to the inherent nature of this film stack system to nucleate CoSi2 as the first phase. By comparing our experimental observations of voiding with Hu's analysis of the trench isolation stress fields, we found good agreement with the predicted stress field distribution in the active Si and STI/Si edge with the locations of void nucleation. The anomalously large stress induced is still not known, but can be attributed to the encroaching CoSi2 film which tends to realign epitaxially along the STI/Si interface.

Uniform and reproducible silicon tip arrays were fabricated using the reactive ion etching followed by the re-oxidation sharpening. Molybdenum was then coated on the some of the silicon tip array. Current-voltage characteristics and current fluctuations were measured in the high vacuum environment. Field emission currents were proved by the Fowler-Nordheim plot studies.
