OBJECTIVES/GOALS: There is evidence that lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adults have poorer cardiovascular health than their heterosexual peers, but studies of the association between sexual orientation (SO) and diabetes mellitus (DM) have been few with mixed findings. To further investigate this association, large cohorts with objective data capture are needed. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: We used data from the Veterans Healthcare Administration Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender EHR cohort which includes veterans with at least 2 encounters October 1, 2009-September 30, 2019. The first clinic visit in this window was the index date with the baseline date one year later; the intervening year served as a baseline period for observation of prevalent disease and comorbidities. We did not include transgender veterans in this analysis in order to focus on SO rather than on the intersection of SO with gender identity. The SO of 1,108,990 veterans was identified using a natural language processing tool; 185,788 veterans were classified as LGB. We first examined sample characteristics by sex and SO and then used logistic regression to assess the association between SO and prevalent DM. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: DM was present among 193,330 veterans (32,986 LGB). Mean age was similar across SO in women (41) and men (53). Distribution of race was similar across groups, but LGB veterans were more likely to be Hispanic (11%, both sexes) than non-LGB men (6%) and women (8%). Current smoking was more prevalent among LGB (44% men, 39% women) than non-LGB veterans (40% men, 30% women). Adjusting for age, sex, race, Hispanic ethnicity, BMI, smoking status, health insurance, marital status, and enrollment priority, LGB veterans had 1.12 [1.10, 1.13] times the odds of DM vs. non-LGB veterans. Bisexual (0.87 [0.74, 1.01]) or lesbian (1.03 [0.97, 1.10]) women did not have significantly different DM odds than non-LGB women. Bisexual men had lower DM odds (0.86 [0.80, 0.93]) while gay men had higher odds (1.04 [1.01, 1.06]) than non-LGB men. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE: This is one of the first studies to report DM in a veteran cohort stratified by SO. Our findings highlight the importance of examining SO groups separately and jointly, as to further elucidate the association between SO, cardiovascular risk factors, and general cardiovascular health. Future work will examine the intersection of SO and gender identity.

Glen’s flow law is a well-established general law for steady-state glacier ice deformation, and many laboratory tests and field measurements have been undertaken which have shown the generality of the law to be correct. In Nature, ice deformation is the response of the glacier/ice sheet to the applied self-weight stress of the ice mass (i.e. ice thickness, gravity and ice density) which produces a stress gradient within the ice column. Detailed experimental analyses of ice samples in the laboratory have until now only been undertaken using uniform stress fields in uniaxial or triaxial tests. Obviously the best method for investigating ice in the laboratory would be if stress gradients similar to those found in Nature could be replicated. In the following paper we describe the physical modelling of two (laboratory-prepared) isotropic, polycrystalline ice models (0.75 × 0.25 × 0.18 m) at enhanced gravity levels (80g) in a geotechnical beam centrifuge. Steel plate was placed on top of the ice model, replicating an overburden of approximately 36 m of ice (at 80g). Thus we were able to model the deformation of the lower 14 m of an ice mass approximately 50 m thick. Models are confined laterally by the Perspex strongbox walls, preventing lateral extension within the sample during testing. Models are unconfined on their downslope ends, rendering longitudinal stresses negligible. Deformation can therefore be treated as simple shear. Samples are instrumented with displacement markers and thermocouples. Values for A and n in the flow law derived from the experiments are reasonable and indicate the potential of this method for ice-deformation studies.

This work is part of an ongoing project which aims to detect terrestrial planets in our neighbouring star system α Centauri using the Doppler method. Owing to the small angular separation between the two components of the α Cen AB binary system, the observations will to some extent be contaminated with light coming from the other star. We are accurately determining the amount of contamination for every observation by measuring the relative strengths of the H-α and NaD lines. Furthermore, we have developed a modified version of a well-established Doppler code that is modelling the observations using two stellar templates simultaneously. With this method we can significantly reduce the scatter of the radial velocity (RV) measurements due to spectral cross-contamination and hence increase our chances of detecting the tiny signature caused by potential Earth-mass planets. After correcting for the contamination we achieve RV precision of ~2.5 m s−1 for a given night of observations. We have also applied this new Doppler code to four southern double-lined spectroscopic binary systems (HR159, HR913, HR7578 and HD181958) and have successfully recovered radial velocities for both components simultaneously.

This paper addresses the issue of chlorine adsorption on GaAs(100) with respect to the mechanisms of thermal and ion-enhanced etching. The use of halogenated precursors eg. dichloroethane is also discussed in regard to chemically assisted ion beam etching (CAIBE).

Summary
Introduction
Many different terms have been employed to describe different types of endocytosis, and these are listed by Chapman-Andresen (1962) and Jacques (1969), but in general endocytic phenomena fall into two broad categories, phagocytosis and pinocytosis. Phagocytosis describes the ingestion of particulate matter such as bacteria, latex beads and erythrocytes by specialised cells such as macrophages and certain unicellular organisms, whereas the more universal process of pinocytosis describes the engulfment of small droplets of extracellular fluid.
Sequence of events in pinocytosis
All types of pinocytosis show a common sequence of events (see Fig. 1).
Internalisation of plasma membrane. This may be triggered by attachment of some substance to the plasma membrane or by some other mechanism.
Translocation. Once the pinosome ‘pinches off’ from the plasma membrane, it migrates towards the perinuclear region. During this time many fusion events may occur. Initially these may be pinosome–pinosome fusions but subsequently pinosome–lysosome fusions take place, producing a secondary lysosome compartment which can also participate in the fusion sequence. The exposure of the pinosome contents to lysosomal enzymes results in the catabolism of any degradable material.
Lysosomal regression. Small molecules produced as a result of degradation escape through the lysosomal membrane, whereas any large non-biodegradable material remains trapped in the secondary lysosome compartment. Certain types of cell, especially unicellular organisms, have the ability to regurgitate material, but many mammalian cells accumulate material they cannot digest as residual bodies within the cell.
