Substance use disorders among juveniles are a major public health concern and are often intertwined with other psychosocial risk factors including antisocial behavior. Identifying etiological risks and mechanisms promoting substance use disorders remains a high priority for informing more focused interventions in high-risk populations. The present study examined brain gray matter structure in relation to substance use severity among n = 152 high-risk, incarcerated boys (aged 14–20). Substance use severity was positively associated with gray matter volume across several frontal/striatal brain regions including amygdala, pallidum, putamen, insula, and orbitofrontal cortex. Effects were apparent when using voxel-based-morphometric analysis, as well as in whole-brain, data-driven, network-based approaches (source-based morphometry). These findings support the hypothesis that elevated gray matter volume in striatal reward circuits may be an endogenous marker for vulnerability to severe substance use behaviors among youth.

Background
Psychopathy is a personality disorder associated with severe emotional and interpersonal consequences and persistent antisocial behavior. Neurobiological models of psychopathy emphasize impairments in emotional processing, attention, and integration of information across large-scale neural networks in the brain. One of the largest integrative hubs in the brain is the corpus callosum (CC) – a large white matter structure that connects the two cerebral hemispheres.
MethodThe current study examines CC volume, measured via Freesurfer parcellation, in a large sample (n = 495) of incarcerated men who were assessed for psychopathic traits using the Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R).
ResultsPsychopathy was associated with reduced volume across all five sub-regions of the CC. These relationships were primarily driven by the affective/interpersonal elements of psychopathy (PCL-R Factor 1), as no significant associations were found between the CC and the lifestyle/antisocial traits of psychopathy. The observed effects were not attributable to differences in substance use severity, age, IQ, or total brain volume.
ConclusionsThese findings align with suggestions that core psychopathic traits may be fostered by reduced integrative capacity across large-scale networks in the brain.

Onion (Allium cepa L.) and bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) seedlings grown in soil treated with DCPA (dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate) were less susceptible to northern root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne hapla Chitwood) infection than seedlings grown in untreated soil. DCPA treatment of nematode larvae did not alter their pathogenicity. Resistance could be correlated with altered cell structure of the root epidermis, increased root exudate as evidenced by soil adherence, reduced fibrous root development, or both.

In 2007 the Academy Award winning director of Shall We Dance released his new film, a critique of the Japanese criminal justice system from a wrongful conviction perspective. In this article, I use the filmas avehicle to serve three disparate goals. First, I provide the firstlegal critique of the film, a genre of legal scholarship developing over the past 15 years. Second, I use the film to reflect on criminal justice reforms in Japan, in particular the introduction of the Lay Judge System (quasi-jury saiban-in seido) from 2009. Third, I critically ask whether use of film as a legal text assists or distracts from my primary pedagogical objectives in teaching comparative Japanese law. I conclude with a cautious recommendation of I Just Didn't Do It as legal cinema, as a catalyst for reform of the Japanese criminal justice system and as an educational text.

Summary
Since the turn of the 21st Century a radical change has occurred in Australian higher education: the student body has internationalised. While euphemistically we refer to this by the neutral and politically correct term of ‘international students’, in fact the change has been the ‘Asianisation’ of the student body so that roughly a quarter of the students on our campuses are from Asia. The Asian Century has arrived in higher education, and Australian universities are the better for it now and going forward.
How we think about the new demographics of the Australian campus has evolved over time. International students have been chiefly understood for the financial benefit their participation has brought. International students were merely seen as a utilitarian response to a constricted funding model in Australia. With the capping of domestic fees (and until recently the capping of domestic student numbers) international students were one area where universities could charge the market rate for students and thereby diversify and increase their revenue.
The fact that international students were paying more understandably led to the charge and criticism of ‘cross-subsidising’ by international students of the domestic student educational experience and universities’ research. The fact that the new students could pay more contributed to the image and stereotype of a rich, spoiled Asian student driving a flash car and living in an expensive apartment. This of course hid the reality of parents making serious sacrifices and drawing on long-term savings to provide the students mobility and the marginal living and employment conditions many international students were enduring. Within this context, international students from Asia were understood merely for the economic benefit they brought universities.

Summary
Introduction
Japan is an archipelago of almost 4000 islands, formed by intersecting fault lines off the Asian continent. The largest are Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku and Hokkaido. Japan's 3500-kilometre length creates great disparities in climate – from snowy Hokkaido in the north to tropical Okinawa in the south. Generally, however, Japan is a mountainous country. This fact is driven home by strong regionality and by the densely populated plains of the Kanto, Kansai and Chukyo regions of Honshu, each a centre of intense industrial and economic activity surrounding a major city – Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya respectively. The population of Japan is about 126 million, though its size and age composition are projected to change dramatically in the coming decades through ageing and a declining birth rate.
Japan is a constitutional monarchy. Its Parliament is named the Diet and is made up of the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors, both elected directly by the people. Japan's government is composed of legislative, administrative and judicial arms. Each is independent, though the Prime Minister and the majority of the Cabinet are drawn from the Diet. Japan's political parties have seen significant realignment at the turn of the century. The centrist Democratic Party of Japan, which took power in 2009, has been the first party to substantially challenge the post-1955 status quo of a Conservative ruling party (the Liberal Democratic Party) and a socialist opposition.

Summary
Debates about the most appropriate way to research the relationship between old age and death highlight many of the ethical dilemmas facing all researchers, and social researchers specifically. In this chapter, we review the ethical issues that arose when developing the methodology for a one-year pilot study exploring the lives of 100 people over the age of 80. These ethical dilemmas included whether older people with dementia can or should consent to research participation; whether it was appropriate to obtain proxy consent from carers; how the ethical issues which arose were addressed through a Research Ethics Committee (REC); and how we, as researchers, dealt with ethical issues as they arose within the research interaction.
Introduction
The relationship between old age and death is poorly understood (Harper, 2000). Despite increasing concern about the care of older people, recent health and social care policies on ageing make few references to death and dying. The emphasis is on maintaining and restoring the independence of older people (DoH, 1998; Royal Commission on Long Term Care, 1999). This results in an inadequate policy framework for developing services for older people who are increasingly dependent on others and for whom rehabilitation services are no longer appropriate (Lloyd, 2000). The National Service Framework for Older People (DoH, 2001) marks a new development in government health policy in acknowledging the need for better end-of-life care in old age and for rehabilitation and support as health declines. However, increased awareness does not necessarily translate into improved practice. Evidence suggests strongly that the responses of health and social services to older people’s needs are patchy and inconsistent (Henwood, 2001).
The research project discussed in this chapter aimed to explore these issues in depth from the perspective of older people themselves. By listening to older people’s accounts of their lives, we hoped to better understand their involvement in key decisions made about their lives by health and social care professionals. The project was funded as a pilot study to test and refine our prospective longitudinal approach prior to undertaking a larger study. While older people were the focus of this project, they were also actively involved in the project advisory group helping us to plan and fine tune the research methodology.

For an ideal I in a commutative ring R we consider the ideal In = ({in | i ∈I}). We show that if n! is a unit in R, then In = In. We give an example of a doubly generated ideal I with Is not finitely generated.
