Summary
This chapter makes explicit the role of context and coping processes for identity formation among diverse youths. The study of coping is enriched by a human developmental theoretical approach that acknowledges the shared status of vulnerability for all humans given that encountered risks are mitigated (or not) by myriad protective factors and accompany all individuals’ developmental journeys. The application of Spencer’s phenomenological variant of ecological systems theory facilitates the study of coping strategies. The authors discuss the social ramifications of endemic economic inequality on developmental contexts, which frames the cultivation of coping strategies, i.e., whether adaptive or maladaptive; thus, experiences ultimately become incorporated into an individual’s identity. To highlight the multifaceted nature of risk, the chapter examines the experiences of Black youths in urban areas and the radiating effects of the exogenous shocks on youths’ domains of development. The authors call for new avenues of study and the provision of risk-mitigating supports to ensure cultivation of productive adaptive coping strategies, which enhance diverse youths’ positive identity outcomes.

Edward Zigler's groundbreaking research on child development resulted in the historic Head Start program. It is useful to examine the theoretical implications of his work by applying a human development theoretical perspective. Phenomenological variant of ecological systems theory (PVEST) is a strengths-based theoretical framework that engages the variability of resource access and coping strategies that promote positive identity development for diverse children. While skill acquisition is a key focus of human capital theory's engagement of early childhood needs, this article highlights the on-going status of human vulnerability that undergirds identity development over the life course. The authors note that “inequality presence denial” combines with high-risk contexts, framed by geography and psychohistoric moments (e.g., The Great Recession, COVID-19), to alter diverse children's developmental pathways. The acknowledgement of “morbid risk” motivates the urgency for research that builds upon Zigler's innovations and privileges human development imperatives. The case study explores these concepts by examining the challenges and assets available to mothers in a low-income community. The article's closing notes developments in the field of economics that ameliorate human capital theory's conceptual limitations, underscoring human development's theoretical strength in motivating research and policies that are maximally responsive to children's positive identity development.

Astro Concepts is a project within Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne developing browser-based software modules on Optical Telescopes, Nebulae and Binary Stars. The modules are designed to enhance students' understanding of basic physics concepts, which underlie introductory-level conceptual astronomy courses. When complete, the Astro Concepts modules will be available for use in university courses in introductory astronomy, introductory physics teaching, secondary teaching and online astronomy education. The strategy outlined here is to obtain a reasonable level of understanding of the necessary physics concepts by presenting them embedded in relevant and interesting astronomy contexts, and by the use of an engaging educational approach requiring active learning by the student.

Although family scholars conceptualize caregiving in terms of networks of carers, little attention has been given to equity within these groups. Siblings comprise a prevalent caregiving network of members who feel responsible for parent care, expect to share these responsibilities with each other, and look to each other to evaluate the fairness of their sharing. In this paper, a multidisciplinary approach is used to examine sibling views of equity in relation to disputes over giving parent care and receiving parent assets. A literary perspective is offered through analysis of stepsibling tensions depicted in the novel Family Matters. Real life disputes among biological siblings that have been pursued through the courts are also examined. Issues arising from these examples are then analysed through the lens of legal doctrines of equity. Siblings evaluating fairness undertake careful comparisons of their respective relationships with parents in terms of biological links to parents and type and extent of influence in interactions with parents.

Suppose a diner says, ‘Can you pass the salt?’ Although her utterance is literally a question (about the physical abilities of the addressee), most would take it as a request (that the addressee pass the salt). In such a case, the request is performed indirectly by way of directly asking a question. Accordingly this utterance is known as an indirect speech act. On the standard account of such speech acts, a single utterance constitutes two distinct speech acts. On this account then, ‘Can you pass the salt?’ is both a question and a request. In a provocative essay, Rod Bertolet argues that there are no indirect speech acts. According to Bertolet, ‘Can you pass the salt?’ is only a question. It is a question that merely functions as a request (without also being one). In this paper we respond to Bertolet's skeptical argument. Appealing to Searle's theory of speech acts and to certain features of linguistic communication, we argue that, despite Bertolet's challenge, there is good reason to countenance indirect speech acts.

Summary
Impetus for the Friendly Schools intervention study
In Australia, approximately 1 in 6 school students reports being bullied at least once a week, and 1 in 20 reports bullying others in the past 6 months (Rigby, 1997; Zubrick et al., 1997). Slee and Rigby (1993; Slee, 1995) found that while most of these episodes of bullying last for a day or two, 17% last for 6 months or more. Australian primary-school children of both genders report being bullied more often than secondary-school students, with more boys than girls bullying others and being bullied (Rigby and Slee, 1991; Rigby, 1997; Rigby and Slee, 1998).
Despite Australian schools' increasing need systematically to address bullying, prior to 1999 no system-level, evidence-based recommendations or state curriculum materials to help to reduce bullying were available. Many school staff reported that they were unsure of the effectiveness of the strategies they utilised, and often did not know what actions could be taken at a whole-school level to reduce, or prevent, the harm from student bullying.
In response to this situation, in 1999, the Curtin University, Western Australian Centre for Health Promotion Research, applied for and received funding extensively to review and synthesise international published empirical and theoretical evidence of successful school-based strategies to reduce the harm experienced by children from being bullied or bullying others. This systematic review provided a set of ‘successful’ practice principles and exemplar case studies to develop a whole-school approach to reduce bullying.

Summary
Introduction
The use of imaging for the evaluation of developmental anomalies of the female pelvis has rapidly expanded since the 1980s mainly because of the development and availability of imaging technology, particularly high-resolution ultrasound with Doppler, spiral computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Imaging is now used in virtually every case to confirm diagnosis or to show the anatomy of the structural abnormalities of the genital tract and other related disorders. Imaging is used extensively for planning the surgical management of the primary condition and any associated complications.
The most commonly used imaging modalities are fluoroscopy (usually with contrast agents), ultrasound and MRI. Each technique has particular advantages and disadvantages, and knowledge of these is important for the appropriate choice of imaging technique. A major consideration when imaging children is the use and dose of ionizing radiation, particularly as many patients are likely to need multiple investigations during the course of their lifetime.
Imaging modalities
Fluoroscopy
Genitograms and micturating cystourethrography are the traditional fluoroscopic methods for evaluating children with disorders of sexual differentiation. All perineal orifices are examined with the catheter inserted only a short distance into the orifice. Contrast is injected gently under direct fluoroscopic screening to allow visualization of the morphology of the urogenital sinus. The important features that are noted include the presence or absence of a vagina, its relationship to the urethra and the level of the external sphincter (which has important surgical implications), and the recognition of a male or female type urethral configuration (Aaronson, 1992).

There exists limited empirical evidence of the effectiveness of universal school-based interventions to reduce or prevent children's bullying. The Friendly Schools project was a 3-year longitudinal randomised control trial designed to determine the efficacy of a universal holistic intervention to prevent or reduce bullying among primary school children. The trial involved 1968 Western Australian children, their parents and their teachers. This paper discusses the components of the Friendly Schools program, and how empirical, theoretical and “promising” mechanisms of change (mediators) were operationalised to develop a whole-of-school approach to reduce bullying. This paper concludes that further research is needed to determine empirically: (a) which mechanisms of change mediate improvements in children's bullying behaviour and mental health status and (b) the relative contribution of the various components of a whole-of-school approach to bullying prevention and reduction in children.
