Background
Adolescents with depression need access to culturally relevant psychological treatment. In many low- and middle-income countries treatments are only accessible to a minority. We adapted group interpersonal therapy (IPT) for adolescents to be delivered through schools in Nepal. Here we report IPT's feasibility, acceptability, and cost.
MethodsWe recruited 32 boys and 30 girls (aged 13–19) who screened positive for depression. IPT comprised of two individual and 12 group sessions facilitated by nurses or lay workers. Using a pre-post design we assessed adolescents at baseline, post-treatment (0–2 weeks after IPT), and follow-up (8–10 weeks after IPT). We measured depressive symptoms with the Depression Self-Rating Scale (DSRS), and functional impairment with a local tool. To assess intervention fidelity supervisors rated facilitators' IPT skills across 27/90 sessions using a standardised checklist. We conducted qualitative interviews with 16 adolescents and six facilitators post-intervention, and an activity-based cost analysis from the provider perspective.
ResultsAdolescents attended 82.3% (standard deviation 18.9) of group sessions. All were followed up. Depression and functional impairment improved between baseline and follow-up: DSRS score decreased by 81% (95% confidence interval 70–95); functional impairment decreased by 288% (249–351). In total, 95.3% of facilitator IPT skills were rated superior/satisfactory. Adolescents found the intervention useful and acceptable, although some had concerns about privacy in schools. The estimate of intervention unit cost was US $96.9 with facilitators operating at capacity.
ConclusionsSchool-based group IPT is feasible and acceptable in Nepal. Findings support progression to a randomised controlled trial to assess effectiveness and cost-effectiveness.
Decreased mortality in coronavirus disease 2019 associated mucormycosis with aspirin use: a retrospective cohort study

Objective
Rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis is a rapidly progressive disease with high mortality rates of about 60 per cent. The increasing incidence of rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis in coronavirus disease 2019 patients in India and worldwide has become a matter of concern owing to the case fatality rate. This study explored the use of low dose aspirin in decreasing the mortality rate of coronavirus disease 2019 associated mucormycosis.
MethodThis was a retrospective observational study. Patients suffering from post-coronavirus disease 2019 mucormycosis were included in the study. Each patient was treated with surgical debridement and systemic amphotericin B. Low dose aspirin was added, and mortality rates were compared with the patients who did not receive aspirin.
ResultsThe demographic data and rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis staging between the two groups were not significantly different. There was a statistically significant difference in mortality outcomes between the two groups (p = 0.029) and a 1.77 times higher risk of dying for patients not receiving aspirin. Kaplan–Meier survival indicated that patients receiving aspirin had better survival rates (p = 0.04).
ConclusionLow dose aspirin improves survival rates in coronavirus disease 2019 associated mucormycosis.
Comparison of gustatory function between mucosal and squamous disease: a randomised controlled study

Objective
The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the gustatory function between patients with chronic mucosal and squamous diseases before and after the surgery.
MethodA total of 33 patients with mucosal diseases and 34 patients with squamous diseases were evaluated for gustatory function both in the pre-operative and post-operative periods. The taste scores were compared between the two groups.
ResultsThe gustatory scores in the mucosal disease group were significantly better than the scores in the squamous disease group (p < 0.05). There was no significant correlation detected between the age of the patients or duration of the disease with the taste scores in any of the study groups.
ConclusionThe improvement in gustatory score was better in the chronic mucosal disease group than the squamous disease group. There was no significant correlation found between the age of the patients or duration of disease and the taste score in any of the study groups.
De-hulling facilitates seed germination and ethylene production in dormant and non-dormant rice genotypes

The hull or husk of rice, comprising the lemma and palea, provides a fitting enclosure for the caryopsis. The physiological significance of the hull in seed dormancy has been examined by comparing the effects of its removal on germination, seed vigour, assimilate mobilization and ethylene production in germinating seeds of six rice genotypes; two each belonging to dormant, semi-dormant and non-dormant groups. Hull removal promoted the above parameters in all three categories of seeds, but the effect was relatively higher in dormant seeds compared with less dormant categories. Ethylene production in non-dormant seeds was initiated after imbibition of water, normally before visible emergence of the radicle. It peaked when the radicle began to protrude and declined thereafter. In comparison, dormant seeds produced very low levels of ethylene during germination; however, hull removal resulted in a dramatic rise in its production. Overall, ethylene evolution at the radicle protrusion stage correlated negatively with germination time. It was concluded that ethylene production starts with breaking of the caryopsis coat and peaks when the radicle ruptures it completely, at the stage of radicle visible emergence. Removal of the hull facilitates germination and ethylene production can be a good indicator for the progress of germination.

Ice single crystals of various orientations containing various concentrations of H2SO4 up to 11.5 ppm were cut from large pucks of laboratory-grown ice. Constant-strain-rate compression tests were performed on the doped ice crystals both at −20°C at an axial strain rate of 1 × 10−5 s−1 and at −10°C at 1 × 106 s−1. The stress–strain curves showed a linearly rising stress with increasing strain, followed by a sharply declining stress after reaching a peak. With further strain, the sharp decline in stress slowed. The tests clearly showed, for the first time, that this naturally occurring impurity dramatically decreases both the peak stress and the subsequent flow stress of ice single crystals. The decrease in the peak strength was related to the square root of the concentration of H2SO4 up to 11.5 ppm, suggesting that the solubility limit of H2SO4 in ice is at least 11.5 ppm. The sulfuric acid also appeared to increase the ductility of the ice. Preliminary examination of a doped ice single crystal by synchrotron X-ray topography suggested that sulfuric acid dramatically increases the grown-in dislocation density.

Single crystals with a wide variety of orientations were cut from large pucks of laboratory-grown ice. Constant-strain-rate compression tests were performed on the crystals either at an axial strain rate of 1 × 10−5 s−1at –20°C or at axial strain rates from 1 × 10−6 s−1 to 1 × 10−4 s−1 at –10°C. In agreement with previous studies of ice flow, the compression tests showed a linearly rising stress with increasing strain, followed by a sharply declining stress after reaching a peak. With further strain, the sharp decline in stress slowed and the flow stress approached a plateau that was only weakly dependent on strain. For all crystallographic orientations, it was found that Schmid’s (critical resolved shear stress) law was obeyed by the peak stress. Slip lines clearly showed that basal slip was the deformation mode.

This paper provides the results of semi-distributed positive degree-day (PDD) modelling for a glacierized river basin in Nepal. The main objective is to estimate the present and future discharge from the glacierized Langtang River basin using a PDD model (PDDM). The PDDM is calibrated for the period 1993–98 and is validated for the period 1999–2006 with Nash–Sutcliffe values of 0.85 and 0.80, respectively. Furthermore, the projected precipitation and temperature data from 2010 to 2050 are obtained from the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, Norway, for the representative concentration pathway 4.5 (RCP4.5) scenario. The Weather Research and Forecasting regional climate model is used to downscale the data from the Norwegian Earth System Model general circulation model. Projected discharge shows no significant trend, but in the future during the pre-monsoon period, discharge will be high and the peak discharge will be in July whereas it is in August at present. The contribution of snow and ice melt from glaciers and snowmelt from rocks and vegetation will decrease in the future: in 2040–50 it will be just 50% of the total discharge. The PDDM is sensitive to monthly average temperature, as a 2°C temperature increase will increase the discharge by 31.9%. Changes in glacier area are less sensitive, as glacier area decreases of 25% and 50% result in a change in the total discharge of –5.7% and –11.4%, respectively.

Child undernutrition remains a major child health and developmental issue in low- and middle-income countries. The concentration (clustering) of underweight children among siblings at the family level is known to exist in India. This study examined the extent and covariates of clustering of underweight children at the sibling and family level in Uttar Pradesh, the largest state of northern India. Clustering of underweight (low weight-for-age) children was assessed using data on 7533 under-five children from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) conducted in 2005–06, analysed using binary logistic and binomial regression models. Related bio-demographic, socioeconomic and health care variables were used as covariates in the models. The odds of being underweight for the index child were about two times higher (OR=2.34, p<0.001) if any of the siblings within the household was malnourished or underweight. A longer birth interval increased the odds of a child being underweight. The odds of underweight were significantly lower (OR=0.69, p<0.001) for children born to normal-weight mothers compared with those born to underweight mothers. Similarly, the odds of underweight were significantly lower (OR=0.49, p=0.01) for children born to educated mothers (high school and above) compared with those born to illiterate mothers. The results of the binomial regression model suggested that the deviations between observed and expected number of children were positive (3.09, 3.78 and 2.71) for 1, 2 and 2+ underweight children within the households of underweight women, indicating the concentration of underweight children among underweight/malnourished mothers. Underweight children were found to be clustered among underweight mothers with multiple underweight siblings. The findings suggest that policy interventions need to focus on underweight mothers with multiple underweight children.
Screening and classification of genotypes for seedling-stage chilling stress tolerance in rice and validation of the trait using SSR markers

Low-temperature stress is an important factor affecting the growth and development of rice in temperate and high-elevation areas. In this study, 220 germplasm lines were used for screening of tolerant genotypes, validation of molecular markers and identification of robust markers for seedling-stage chilling stress tolerance to be used in marker-assisted breeding (MAS) programme. The temperature regimes imposed in the growth chamber simulated cold-stress injuries at the seedling stages of the germplasm lines. The genotypes were classified into six classes: those having susceptible genotypes were classified into moderately and highly susceptible types, while tolerant types into moderately tolerant, tolerant, highly tolerant and very highly tolerant classes. Genotypes namely Langma, Umleng-1 and Geetanjali showed survival up to 25 d, which were better than the positive check Kalinga-III surviving up to 20 d under chilling stress. Ten simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers were tested for differentiation of genotypes. Individual use of SSR markers like RM284, RM286, RM85, RM341 and RM5746 can be applied in MAS breeding including combination use of non-pair markers like RM284, RM239 and RM85, which was even better than the combined use of RM284 and RM85. However, combined use of all ten markers can most effectively be employed for cold tolerance through MAS breeding.

Socio-behavioural factors and pathogens associated with childhood diarrhoea are of global public health concern. Our survey in 696 children aged ⩽2 years in rural West Bengal detected rotavirus as sole pathogen in 8% (17/199) of diarrhoeic stool specimens. Other organisms were detected along with rotavirus in 11% of faecal specimens. A third of the children with rotavirus diarrhoea, according to Vesikari score, had severe illness. The top four rotavirus genotypes were G9P[4] (28%), G1P[8] (19%), G2P[4] (14%) and G8P[4] (8%). In the multivariate model, the practice of ‘drawing drinking water by dipping a pot in the storage vessel’ [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 2·21, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1·03–4·74, P = 0·041], and ‘children aged ⩽6 months with non-exclusive breastfeeding’ (aOR 2·07, 95% CI 1·1–3·82, P = 0·024) had twice the odds of having diarrhoea. Incidence of rotavirus diarrhoea was 24/100 child-years in children aged >6–18 months, 19/100 child-years in children aged >18–24 months and 5/100 child-years in those aged ⩽6 months. Results have translational implications for future interventions including vaccine development.
Estimating the abundance of Nepal's largest population of tigers Panthera tigris

Information on the abundance of tigers Panthera tigris is essential for effective conservation of the species. The main aim of this study was to determine the status of tigers in Chitwan National Park, Nepal, including the Churia hills, using a camera-trap based mark–recapture abundance estimate. Camera traps (n = 310) were placed in an area of 1,261 km2 from 20 January to 22 March 2010. The study area was divided into three blocks and each block was trapped for 19–21 days, with a total effort of 3,582 man-days, 170 elephant-days and 4,793 camera-trap nights. The effectively camera-trapped area was 2,596 km2. Camera stations were located 1.5–2 km apart. Sixty-two tigers (age ⩾ 1.5 years), comprising 15 males, 41 females and six of unidentified sex, were identified from 344 photographs. The heterogeneity model Mh (jackknife) was the best fit for the capture history data. A capture probability ($\hat P$) of 0.05 was obtained, generating a population estimate ($\hat N$) of 125 ± SE 21.8 tigers. The density of tigers in the area, including Churia and Barandabhar (buffer zone forest linked with mid hill forest), was estimated to be 4.5 ± SE 0.35 tigers per 100 km2, using a Bayesian spatially explicit capture–recapture model in SPACECAP. Our study showed the use of Churia by tigers and we therefore conclude that the Chitwan tiger population serves as a source to maintain tiger occupancy of the larger landscape that comprises Chitwan National Park, Parsa Wildlife Reserve, Barandabhar buffer zone, Someswor forest in Nepal and Valmiki Tiger Reserve in India.

As India rapidly urbanizes, within urban areas socioeconomic disparities are rising and health inequality among urban children is an emerging challenge. This paper assesses the relative contribution of socioeconomic factors to child health inequalities between the less developed Empowered Action Group (EAG) states and more developed South Indian states in urban India using data from the 2005–06 National Family Health Survey. Focusing on urban health from varying regional and developmental contexts, socioeconomic inequalities in child health are examined first using Concentration Indices (CIs) and then the contributions of socioeconomic factors to the CIs of health variables are derived. The results reveal, in order of importance, pronounced contributions of household economic status, parent's illiteracy and caste to urban child health inequalities in the South Indian states. In contrast, parent's illiteracy, poor economic status, being Muslim and child birth order 3 or more are major contributors to health inequalities among urban children in the EAG states. The results suggest the need to adopt different health policy interventions in accordance with the pattern of varying contributions of socioeconomic factors to child health inequalities between the more developed South Indian states and less developed EAG states.

Effect of Post-treatment Temperature on Insect Resistance to Insecticidal Sprays

Results are given of investigations on the effects of five post-treatment temperatures on the mortality of adults of Tribolium castaneum (Hbst.) sprayed with five or six concentrations of each of six insecticidal formulations, emulsified solutions of DDT, γ BHC, toxaphene, chlordane and parathion and a suspension of DDT.
With both emulsified solutions and suspensions of DDT and emulsified solutions of γ BHC the mortality of the insects decreased with the rise of temperature from about 14° to 30°C. and increased when the temperature increased from 30° and 40°C. On the other hand, with emulsified solutions of toxaphene, chlordane and parathion, the mortality of the test insects increased continuously with increase of temperature from 14° to 40°C. As a possible explanation for such divergent results with different insecticides it is tentatively suggested that whilst the inherent physiological resistance of Tribolium to DDT and γ BHC formulations which appear to increase with increase of temperature up to a certain point has been demonstrated, the technique has not been sufficiently critical in the case of the other formulations, and it is thought that physiological resistance has possibly remained masked by other factors and that the values of LC50 are not a true index of physiological resistance in the ease of these insecticides.
An essential similarity between the curve obtained by plotting values of LC50 against temperature in the case of DDT and γ BHC and those relating temperature to other physiological activities (published by various workers) has been stressed, implying a similarity between the resistance of the insect to insecticides on the one hand and its other physiological activities on the other.

INTRODUCTION
In a variety of mammals and a few birds, newly immigrated or newly dominant males are known to attack and kill dependent infants (Hausfater & Hrdy, 1984; Parmigiani & vom Saal, 1994; van Schaik & Janson, 2000). Hrdy (1974) was the first to suggest that this bizarre behaviour was the product of sexual selection: by killing infants they did not sire, these males advanced the timing of the mother's next oestrus and, owing to their new social position, would have a reasonable probability of siring this female's next infant. Infanticide would therefore be one of the most dramatic expressions of sexual conflict (Smuts & Smuts, 1993; Gowaty, 1997, this volume).
Although this interpretation, and indeed the phenomenon itself, has been hotly debated for decades (e.g. Dolhinow, 1977; Boggess, 1984; Bartlett et al., 1993; Sussman et al., 1995), on balance, this hypothesis provides a far better fit with the observations on primates than any of the alternatives (cf. van Schaik, 2000a). First, several detailed studies showed that the males never attacked or killed their own offspring (Borries et al., 1999; Soltis et al., 2000), in accordance with the more anecdotal information compiled from all directly observed cases of infanticide in the wild (van Schaik, 2000a). Second, several large-scale studies have estimated that the time gained by the infanticidal male amounts to 25 per cent, 26 per cent and 32 per cent of the mean interbirth interval (Crockett & Sekulic, 1984; Sommer, 1994; Borries, 1997).

We report up to 6 wt% storage of H2 at 2 atm and T = 77 K in processed bundles of single-walled carbon nanotubes. The hydrogen storage isotherms are completely reversible; D2 isotherms confirmed this anomalous low-pressure adsorption and also revealed the effects of quantum mechanical zero point motion. We propose that our postsynthesis treatment of the sample improves access for hydrogen to the central pores within individual nanotubes and may also create a roughened tube surface with an increased binding energy for hydrogen. Such an enhancement may be needed to understand the strong adsorption at low pressure. We obtained an experimental isosteric heat qst = 125 ± 5 meV. Calculations are also presented that indicate disorder in the tube wall enhances the binding energy of H2.

In situ resistivity and thermoelectric power (S) have been used to study the nature of the adsorption of hydrogen in bundles of single-walled carbon nanotubes for H2 pressure P <1 atm and temperatures 77 K<T<500 K. Isothermal plots of S vs. Δρ/ρ0 are found to exhibit linear behavior as a function of gas coverage, consistent with a physisorption process. Studies of S, ρ at T = 500 K as a function of pressure exhibit a plateau at a pressure P~40 Torr, the same pressure where the H % measurements suggest the highest binding energy sites are being saturated. The effects of H2 exposure at 500 K on the thermoelectric transport properties are fully reversible.

We report (6 wt %) storage of H2 at T=77 K in processed bundles of single-walled carbon nanotubes at P=2 atmospheres. The hydrogen storage isotherms are completely reversible. D2 isotherms confirm this anomalous low-pressure adsorption and further reveal the effects of quantum mechanical zero point motion. We propose that our post-synthesis treatment of the sample not only improves access for hydrogen to the central pores within individual nanotubes, but also may create a roughened tube surface with an enhanced binding energy for hydrogen. Such an enhancement is needed to understand the strong adsorption at low pressure. We obtain an experimental isosteric heat qst=125 ± 5 meV for processed SWNT materials.
Equilibrium Abundances of Heavy Elements Supported by Radiative Levitation in the Atmospheres of Hot DA White Dwarfs

We present revised estimates of the equilibrium abundances of heavy elements supported by radiative levitation in the atmospheres of hot DA white dwarfs. We emphasize, in particular, the role of trace pollutants that may be present in the background plasma, an effect which has been heretofore neglected. We take advantage of the availability of a table of detailed monochromatic opacities calculated for a plasma made of H containing small amounts of C, N, O, and Fe to illustrate how the equilibrium abundances of levitating elements react to the flux redistribution caused by the addition of these small traces of opaque material. We also consider two other improvements: a more sophisticated treatment of the momentum redistribution process and ion experiences following a photoexcitation, and use of an upgraded value for the line profile width associated with pressure broadening.
