The diffusion of exchanged Yb, Ho, and Eu from interlayer positions in montmorillonite was studied using infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray powder diffraction, and cation-exchange measurements. Dehydration of exchanged montmorillonite between 100° and 280°C caused the ions to diffuse into the hexagonal rings of surface oxygens. Subsequent migration into vacant octahedral sites was small regardless of the radius of the cation. Considerable ion fixation in excess of the cation-exchange capacity of the clay was observed at 20°C in both water and a 1:1 water:95% ethanol mixture. Evidence for hydrolysis as a possible mechanism for cation fixation was obtained by observing frequency shifts for deuterated hydroxyl groups using IR spectroscopy. A major IR band centered at 2680 cm−1 was observed for all three lanthanide-exchanged montmorillonites studied and assigned to the OH-stretching frequency of a lanthanide hydroxide. This band intensified on heating at 300°C for 1 hr. An IR band between 690 and 710 cm−1 also was observed for all three lanthanide-exchanged montmorillonites and was assigned to a lanthanide-hydroxyl deformation mode. No hydrolysis was observed for Na-montmorillonite, as expected from the very low hydration energy of Na+.

X-ray diffraction, infrared, and cation-exchange capacity measurements of the reaction products of montmorillonites with YbCl3.6H2O show that at 1 atm irreversible sorption of Yb3+ increases with increasing temperature in the range 20° to 280°C, whereas at 110 atm it decreases with increasing temperature. Above 100°C, less irreversible sorption occurs at 110 atm than at 1 atm. The decreased sorption at high pressure is attributed to reduced cation hydrolytic fixation and to rapid expulsion of interlayer Yb3+ by interlayer water at higher temperatures, with a concomitant decrease in Yb3+ migration to octahedral sites. At 110 atm, 160° and 200°C treatments cause changes in infrared absorption bands (884 cm-1, 848 cm-1) suggesting that sorbed Yb3+ is charge compensated by the deprotonation of Fe3+- and Mg2+-hydroxyl groups. At 290°C deprotonation is restricted to Fe3+-hydroxyl groups.

Peer support interventions for dietary change may offer cost-effective alternatives to interventions led by health professionals. This process evaluation of a trial to encourage the adoption and maintenance of a Mediterranean diet in a Northern European population at high CVD risk (TEAM-MED) aimed to investigate the feasibility of implementing a group-based peer support intervention for dietary change, positive elements of the intervention and aspects that could be improved. Data on training and support for the peer supporters; intervention fidelity and acceptability; acceptability of data collection processes for the trial and reasons for withdrawal from the trial were considered. Data were collected from observations, questionnaires and interviews, with both peer supporters and trial participants. Peer supporters were recruited and trained to result in successful implementation of the intervention; all intended sessions were run, with the majority of elements included. Peer supporters were complimentary of the training, and positive comments from participants centred around the peer supporters, the intervention materials and the supportive nature of the group sessions. Attendance at the group sessions, however, waned over the intervention, with suggested effects on intervention engagement, enthusiasm and group cohesion. Reduced attendance was reportedly a result of meeting (in)frequency and organisational concerns, but increased social activities and group-based activities may also increase engagement, group cohesion and attendance. The peer support intervention was successfully implemented and tested, but improvements can be suggested and may enhance the successful nature of these types of interventions. Some consideration of personal preferences may also improve outcomes.

Healthcare workers (HCWs) not fulfilling the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) case definition underwent severe acute respiratory coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) screening. Risk of exposure, adherence to personal protective equipment (PPE), and symptoms were assessed. In total, 2,000 HCWs were screened: 5.5% were positive for SARS-CoV-2 by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). There were no differences in PPE use between SARS-CoV-2–positive and –negative HCWs (adherence, >90%). Nursing and kitchen staff were independently associated with positive SARS-CoV-2 results.

Introduction
Resilience enables people to develop and regain mental health in the face of adversity, and is related to recovery. There are no current measures of resilience for Bipolar Disorder (BD).
AimsTo develop and validate a BD specific resilience measure, and examine relationships between resilience and recovery-related variables.
Objectives(1) Describe the development and psychometric evaluation of the Spanish 23-item Resilience to Bipolar Disorder (RBD) questionnaire. (2) Test relationships between RBD scores and recovery-related variables in BD.
MethodThe 41-item RBD questionnaire (developed based on prior qualitative research) was completed by 113 participants with BD, along with measures related to quality of life, functioning and recovery. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) using Principal Axis Factoring with promax rotation was conducted to identify redundant items and underlying factors. Reliability and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) for the resulting factorial structure were assessed.
ResultsEFA identified 23RBD items suitable for retention, structured within five factors. Cronbach αs were all satisfactory (all αs ≥ .76) at both subscale and total score level. Convergent validity was supported through positive correlations between RBDand the Resilience Scale-25. Additionally, the RBD correlated significantlywith quality of life, well-being, personal recovery, functional impairment and symptoms. CFA fit indexes supported the five factor structure of the RBD scale.
ConclusionsTheRBD is a reliable and valid measure of resilience in BD, being associated with measures related to quality of life, functioning and recovery, which is consistent with previous research in resilience and mental health in other psychiatric populations.

Physical punishment of children is linked to negative developmental outcomes. The widely used Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) promotes alternative responses to physical punishment. Data on the effectiveness of the Triple P Seminar Series is limited. In this study, Canadian parents’ reports of physical punishment, non-physical punishment, and non-punitive responses were compared before and after they attended the Triple P Seminar Series. Twenty-seven parents of children aged 2 to 6 years attended the Seminar Series and completed pre- and post-intervention questionnaires measuring the number of times they used various physical punishments, non-physical punishments, and non-punitive responses in the past month. Hypotheses were tested using univariate descriptive analyses, paired samples t tests, and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Tests. Parents’ reports of physical punishment decreased on only one of the four physical punishment items (shaking/grabbing) from pre- to post-intervention. Over the course of the Seminar Series, parents became more likely to emphasise rules and to punish their children by taking things away from them. The findings suggest that the Seminar Series has limited effectiveness in reducing physical punishments or increasing non-punitive responses. Further research on this question is needed.

The first reports of accurate skeletal muscle mass measurement in human subjects appeared at about the same time as introduction of the sarcopenia concept in the late 1980s. Since then these methods, computed tomography and MRI, have been used to gain insights into older (i.e. anthropometry and urinary markers) and more recently developed and refined methods (ultrasound, bioimpedance analysis and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) of quantifying regional and total body skeletal muscle mass. The objective of this review is to describe the evolution of these methods and their continued development in the context of sarcopenia evaluation and treatment. Advances in these technologies are described with a focus on additional quantifiable measures that relate to muscle composition and ‘quality’. The integration of these collective evaluations with strength and physical performance indices is highlighted with linkages to evaluation of sarcopenia and the spectrum of related disorders such as sarcopenic obesity, cachexia and frailty. Our findings show that currently available methods and those in development are capable of non-invasively extending measures from solely ‘mass’ to quality evaluations that promise to close the gaps now recognised between skeletal muscle mass and muscle function, morbidity and mortality. As the largest tissue compartment in most adults, skeletal muscle mass and aspects of muscle composition can now be evaluated by a wide array of technologies that provide important new research and clinical opportunities aligned with the growing interest in the spectrum of conditions associated with sarcopenia.
