Prescriptive rules guide human behavior across various domains of community life, including law, morality, and etiquette. What, specifically, are rules in the eyes of their subjects, i.e., those who are expected to abide by them? Over the last sixty years, theorists in the philosophy of law have offered a useful framework with which to consider this question. Some, following H. L. A. Hart, argue that a rule’s text at least sometimes suffices to determine whether the rule itself covers a case. Others, in the spirit of Lon Fuller, believe that there is no way to understand a rule without invoking its purpose — the benevolent ends which it is meant to advance. In this paper we ask whether people associate rules with their textual formulation or their underlying purpose. We find that both text and purpose guide people’s reasoning about the scope of a rule. Overall, a rule’s text more strongly contributed to rule infraction decisions than did its purpose. The balance of these considerations, however, varied across experimental conditions: In conditions favoring a spontaneous judgment, rule interpretation was affected by moral purposes, whereas analytic conditions resulted in a greater adherence to textual interpretations. In sum, our findings suggest that the philosophical debate between textualism and purposivism partly reflects two broader approaches to normative reasoning that vary within and across individuals.

The design of large-scale engineered systems relies on the extensive use of models. Although there are few papers that study design review practices, we did not find any on model-based design reviews. Thus, we undertook a survey to collect current practices and challenges. We found that reviews are mainly synchronous co-located or remote meetings that involve various profiles who need to access and share models, but that they pragmatically give them up and prefer to comment on PowerPoint-like slides containing screenshots of models except when the meeting gathers only experts in model-based design.

Organismal metabolic rates reflect the interaction of environmental and physiological factors. Thus, calcifying organisms that record growth history can provide insight into both the ancient environments in which they lived and their own physiology and life history. However, interpreting them requires understanding which environmental factors have the greatest influence on growth rate and the extent to which evolutionary history constrains growth rates across lineages. We integrated satellite measurements of sea-surface temperature and chlorophyll-a concentration with a database of growth coefficients, body sizes, and life spans for 692 populations of living marine bivalves in 195 species, set within the context of a new maximum-likelihood phylogeny of bivalves. We find that environmental predictors overall explain only a small proportion of variation in growth coefficient across all species; temperature is a better predictor of growth coefficient than food supply, and growth coefficient is somewhat more variable at higher summer temperatures. Growth coefficients exhibit moderate phylogenetic signal, and taxonomic membership is a stronger predictor of growth coefficient than any environmental predictor, but phylogenetic inertia cannot fully explain the disjunction between our findings and the extensive body of work demonstrating strong environmental control on growth rates within taxa. Accounting for evolutionary history is critical when considering shells as historical archives. The weak relationship between variation in food supply and variation in growth coefficient in our data set is inconsistent with the hypothesis that the increase in mean body size through the Phanerozoic was driven by increasing productivity enabling faster growth rates.

Introduction
An unprecedented outbreak of Ebola virus diseases (EVD) occurred in West Africa from March 2014 to January 2016. The French Institute for Public Health implemented strengthened surveillance to early identify any imported case and avoid secondary cases.
MethodsFebrile travellers returning from an affected country had to report to the national emergency healthcare hotline. Patients reporting at-risk exposures and fever during the 21st following day from the last at-risk exposure were defined as possible cases, hospitalised in isolation and tested by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Asymptomatic travellers reporting at-risk exposures were considered as contact and included in a follow-up protocol until the 21st day after the last at-risk exposure.
ResultsFrom March 2014 to January 2016, 1087 patients were notified: 1053 were immediately excluded because they did not match the notification criteria or did not have at-risk exposures; 34 possible cases were tested and excluded following a reliable negative result. Two confirmed cases diagnosed in West Africa were evacuated to France under stringent isolation conditions. Patients returning from Guinea (n = 531; 49%) and Mali (n = 113; 10%) accounted for the highest number of notifications.
ConclusionNo imported case of EVD was detected in France. We are confident that our surveillance system was able to classify patients properly during the outbreak period.
The Most Massive Heartbeat: Finding the Pulse of ι Orionis

ι Orionis is a massive binary system consisting of O9III + B1 III/IV stars. Though the system has been well studied, much about its fundamental properties have been difficult to determine. In this paper we report on the discovery of the heartbeat phenomenon in ι Orionis making it the most massive heartbeat system currently known. Using this phenomenon we have found empirical values for the masses and radii of both components. Moreover, we report the detection of tidally induced oscillations in an O-type star for the first time. These discoveries open a new avenue for exploring asteroseismology in massive stars.

Background:
Video-electroencephalography (VEEG) telemetry is the simultaneous recording of ictal and interictal EEG pattern and paroxysmal behavior to investigate the nature of paroxysmal events.
Methods:This is a prospective study performed to asses the safety and yield of early discontinuation of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) in the telemetry unit. Over a 2.5-year period, 50 patients that met the indications for VEEG monitoring were admitted by an epileptologist to neuro-observation units with continuous monitoring, nursing coverage and EEG technicians support during working hours and on-call thereafter. In most cases AEDs (except Phenobarbital) were discontinued in 24h. We prospectively assessed the yield and safety of the telemetry investigation as well as epilepsy surgery outcomes.
Results:Our monitoring answered the study question in 88% of the patients. The question was not answered in 12% of cases due to the lack of recorded events. Our results changed the management in 74% of cases and potentially improved quality of life by decreasing the AEDs consumption and number of seizures per month. Over all, 22% received epilepsy surgery and became either seizure free or their seizures became non-disabling. Our method significantly decreased the duration of hospital admission for monitoring and minimal complications occurred only in 8% of patients.
Conclusions:In conclusion, our method for short VEEG monitoring has a high yield for diagnosis, minimal complications and is cost effective. These qualities, together with good surgery results validate our method for the investigation and treatment of refractory seizure cases.

Objective
To compare BMI with abdominal skinfold thickness (ASF), waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio in the prediction of insulin resistance (IR) in prepubertal Colombian children.
DesignWe calculated age- and sex-specific Z-scores for BMI, ASF, waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio and three other skinfold-thickness sites. Logistic regression with stepwise selection (P = 0·80 for entry and P = 0·05 for retention) was performed to identify predictors of IR and extreme IR, which were determined by age- and sex-specific Z-scores to identify the ≥ 90th and ≥ 95th percentile of homeostasis model assessment (HOMAIR), respectively. We used receiver operating characteristic curves to compare the area under the curve between models.

SubjectsChildren (n 1261) aged 6–10 years in Tanner stage 1 from a population-based study.
ResultsA total of 127 children (seventy girls and fifty-seven boys) were classified with IR, including sixty-three children (thirty-three girls and thirty boys) classified with extreme IR. Only ASF and BMI Z-scores were retained as predictors of IR by stepwise selection. Adding ASF Z-score to BMI Z-score improved the area under the curve from 0·794 (95 % CI 0·752, 0·837) to 0·811 (95 % CI 0·770, 0·851; P for contrast = 0·01). In predicting extreme IR, the addition of ASF Z-score to BMI Z-score improved the area under the curve from 0·837 (95 % CI 0·790, 0·884) to 0·864 (95 % CI 0·823, 0·905; P for contrast = 0·01).
ConclusionsASF Z-score predicted IR independent of BMI Z-score in our population of prepubertal children. ASF and BMI Z-scores together improved IR risk stratification compared with BMI Z-score alone, opening new perspectives in the prediction of cardiometabolic risk in prepubertal children.

We report single transverse and longitudinal mode operation of an all solid-state orange laser pumped at 821 nm. Oscillation at 607 nm by avalanche upconversion in Pr, Yb:BaY2F8 pumped by a Ti-Sapphire laser at 821 nm is obtained with a threshold as low as 570 mW. A maximum output power of 12 mW is obtained for a pump power of 2.5 W.

This work is an assessment of recent developments on microwave plasmas at atmospheric pressure and their applications in the field of surface treatment. A special attention is paid to the question of the accuracy of data at high temperature (above 2000 K) and to the non-locality of the energy dissipation in argon and helium plasmas.

The densification behavior of 20–40-nm graphite-coated B4C nano-particles was studied using dilatometry, x-ray diffraction, and electron microscopy. The sintering onset temperature was higher than expected from a nanoscale powder (∼1500 °C); remnant B2O3 kept particles separated until B2O3 volatilization, and the graphite coatings imposed particle-to-particle contact of a substance more refractory than B4C. Solid-state sintering (1500–1850 °C) was followed by a substantial slowing of contraction rate attributed to the formation of eutectic liquid droplets more than 10× the size of the original nano-particles. These droplets were induced to form well below the B4C-graphite eutectic temperature by the high surface energy of nanoparticles. They were interpreted to have quickly solidified to form a vast number of voids in particle packing, which in turn, impeded detection of continued solid-state sintering. Starting at 2200 °C, a permanent and interconnected liquid phase formed, which facilitated rapid contraction by liquid phase sintering and/or compact slumping.
Characterization of two classes of benzodiazepine binding sites in Schistosoma mansoni

As we have recently shown that GABA should be considered a putative neurotransmitter in Schistosoma mansoni, the present work aimed to search for GABAA receptors in adult worms using [3H]-flunitrazepam to label the allosteric benzodiazepine binding site which is classically present on GABAA receptor complexes. We detected a large population (Bmax=8·25±1·1 pmol . mg protein−1) of high affinity (Kd=33·6±1·5 nm) binding sites for flunitrazepam. These sites harboured a singular pharmacological modulation that does not fit well with a mammalian central benzodiazepine receptor, mainly due to a very high affinity for Ro5-4864 and a very low affinity for clonazepam. We also detected a second population of benzodiazepine binding sites labelled with high affinity (IC50=85 nm) by [3H]-PK11195, a selective ligand of the mammalian peripheral benzodiazepine receptor. In conclusion, this work describes the pharmacological properties of a large population of central-like benzodiazepine receptors supporting their study as putative new targets for the development of anti-parasitic agents. We also describe, for the first time, the presence of peripheral benzodiazepine receptors in this parasite.
