This paper explores a distinction among causal relationships that has yet to receive attention in the philosophical literature, namely, whether causal relationships are reversible or irreversible. We provide an analysis of this distinction and show how it has important implications for causal inference and modeling. This work also clarifies how various familiar puzzles involving preemption and over-determination play out differently depending on whether the causation involved is reversible.

Nanophosphors correspond to nanostructured inorganic insulator materials that emit light under particle or electromagnetic radiation excitation. In this work we investigate the structure and luminescent properties of Ce-doped Lu2SiO5 (LSO) nanophosphors prepared by solution combustion synthesis with the Ce content 0.1 to 12 at. %. Samples were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), line scan electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra are composed of two major bands centered at 360 and 430 nm, respectively. These results reveal a red-shift and enhanced Stokes shift for the nanophosphors when compared to bulk. Ce content was also found to affect photoluminescence emission intensity and fluorescent lifetime. The nanophosphor concentration quenching curve presents a broad maximum centered at 1 at.%. Lifetime measurements show a continuous decrease from 34 to 21 ns as Ce content is increased.

Background.
Toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS), a complication of cataract surgery, is a sterile inflammation of the anterior chamber of the eye. An outbreak of TASS was recognized at an outpatient surgical center and its affiliated hospital in December 2002.
Methods.Medical records of patients who underwent cataract surgery during the outbreak were reviewed, and surgical team members who participated in the operations were interviewed. Potential causes of TASS were identified and eliminated. Feedwater from autoclave steam generators and steam condensates were analyzed by use of spectroscopy and ion chromatography.
Results.During the outbreak, 8 (38%) of 21 cataract operations were complicated by TASS, compared with 2 (0.07%) of 2,713 operations performed from January 1996 through November 2002. Results of an initial investigation suggested that cataract surgical equipment may have been contaminated by suboptimal equipment reprocessing or as a result of personnel changes. The frequency of TASS decreased (1 of 44 cataract operations) after reassignment of personnel and revision of equipment reprocessing procedures. Further investigation identified the presence of impurities (eg, sulfates, copper, zinc, nickel, and silica) in autoclave steam moisture, which was attributed to improper maintenance of the autoclave steam generator in the outpatient surgical center. When impurities in autoclave steam moisture were eliminated, no cases of TASS were observed after more than 1,000 cataract operations.
Conclusion.Suboptimal reprocessing of cataract surgical equipment may evolve over time in busy, multidisciplinary surgical centers. Clinically significant contamination of surgical equipment may result from inappropriate maintenance of steam sterilization systems. Standardization of protocols for reprocessing of cataract surgical equipment may prevent outbreaks of TASS and may be of assistance during outbreak investigations.

Summary
Scotus’s natural theology has the following distinctive claims:
That we can reason demonstratively to the necessary existence and nature of God from what is actually so but not from imagined situations or from conceivability-to-us; rather, only from the possibility logically required for what we know actually to be so.
That there is a univocal transcendental notion of being.
That there are disjunctive transcendental notions that apply exclusively to everything, like 'contingent/necessary', and such that the inferior cannot have a case unless the superior does.
That an a priori demonstration of the existence of God is impossible because there is nothing explanatorily prior to the divine being; thus, reasoning must be a posteriori from the real dependences among things we perceive to the possibility of an absolutely First Being (The First Principle).
That such a being cannot be possible without existing necessarily.
That the First Being (God) is simple, omni-intelligent, free (spontaneous), omnipotent, and positively infinite.
That there is a formal distinction, which is more than a distinction within our concepts or definitions, among the divine attributes.

The properties of water near surfaces are known to differ from those of the bulk. For instance, in 140 A diameter silica pores the density has been found to be 3% lower than that of the bulk while the heat capacity is 25% greater than that the bulk. Etzler [15] has proposed a statistical thermodynamic model for vicinal water. This model has been able to correlate a number of thermodynamic properties of water in silica pores. Furthermore, some of the microscopic implications of the model have been found to be consistent with molecular dynamics simulations. Here we discuss the results of a statistical geometric analysis of a molecular dynamics simulation which, as first suggested by Roentgen (1892), indicates that water indeed exists in “bulky” and “dense” states. Furthermore, recent results concerning the temperature dependence of the heat capacity of water in silica pores is discussed.

The attention of philosophers. linguists and literary theorists has been converging on the diverse and intriguing phenomena of analogy of meaning:the different though related meanings of the same word, running from simple equivocation to paronymy, metaphor and figurative language. So far, however, their attempts at explanation have been piecemeal and inconclusive and no new and comprehensive theory of analogy has emerged. This is what James Ross offers here. In the first full treatment of the subject since the fifteenth century, he argues that analogy is a systematic and universal feature of natural languages, with identifiable and law-like characteristics which explain how the meanings of words in a sentence are interdependent. Throughout he contrasts his with classical and medieval views.

Summary
Predicate schemes are the meaning-relevant portions of paradigmatic sets
PARADIGMATIC SETS: CO-APPLICABLE WORDS
Contrast and meaning To have meaning, an expression must be in contrast of meaning; it must have differential meaning – function contrastively to something else (Lyons 1966: 422; 1963: 59). Equivocal words stand in diverse contrast patterns with other words: for example, they may not have the same opposites (sharp:dull;sharp:flat). That provides the purchase for modelling the meaning relationships under inquiry.
As Lyons described combinatorial contrasts, there are two basic kinds: syntagmatic and paradigmatic (1966: 70ff, 117, 428f, 460; 1977 vol.1: 48, 55). An expression paradigmatically contrasts with all other expressions that could have been inserted in its place (the remainder of the sentence remaining substantially unchanged) to produce replacement sentences that are semantically acceptable within the given environment and preserve the consistency (or inconsistency) of the original. A native speaker must not find the substituted result so incongruous that his critical reply would be the equivalent of ‘That's not English; one doesn't say that’.
The set of words in paradigmatic contrast with a given word may be imagined as a vertical list of words substitutable (under the conditions mentioned) for the same place, or role, in a given sentence frame, e.g. ‘The youth/young man/boy/urchin/girl/matron/etc. asked for a job.’ It is the list of co-applicable words (see definitions below).
Syntagmatic contrasts are the differing semantic and syntactic limitations expressions impose linearly upon what can be combined with them into an acceptable sentence.
