Comparisons of Late Ordovician ecosystem dynamics before and after the Richmondian invasion reveal consequences of invasive species in benthic marine paleocommunities

A thorough understanding of how communities respond to extreme changes, such as biotic invasions, is essential to manage ecosystems today. Here we constructed fossil food webs to identify changes in Late Ordovician (Katian) shallow-marine paleocommunity structure and functioning before and after the Richmondian invasion, a well-documented ancient invasion. Food webs were compared using descriptive metrics and cascading extinction on graphs models. Richness at intermediate trophic levels was underrepresented when using only data from the Paleobiology Database relative to museum collections, resulting in a spurious decrease in modeled paleocommunity stability. Therefore, museum collections and field sampling may provide more reliable sources of data for the reconstruction of trophic organization in comparison to online data repositories. The invasion resulted in several changes in ecosystem dynamics. Despite topological similarities between pre- and postinvasion food webs, species loss occurred corresponding to a minor decrease in functional groups. Invaders occupied all of the preinvasion functional guilds, with the exception of four incumbent guilds that were lost and one new guild, corroborating the notion that invaders replace incumbents and fill preexisting niche space. Overall, models exhibited strong resistance to secondary extinction, although the postinvasion community had a lower threshold of collapse and more variable response to perturbation. We interpret these changes in dynamics as a decrease in stability, despite similarities in overall structure. Changes in food web structure and functioning resulting from the invasion suggest that conservation efforts may need to focus on preserving functional diversity if more diverse ecosystems are not inherently more stable.

Tomato Root Uptake of Carfentrazone

Fresh market tomato is an important and valuable crop in Florida, accounting for 630 million dollars farm-gate value, which was 45% of the total value of the U.S. crop in 2010. In order to maintain or increase its productivity, labeled herbicide alternatives to methyl bromide are important to limiting seed production of weeds emerging between the raised plasticulture beds. A study was conducted inside a greenhouse where carfentrazone was applied as a drench at 0.03125×, 0.0625×, 0.125×, 0.25×, 0.5×, 1×, 2×, 4×, and 8× and as a subsurface irrigation at 0.0625×, 0.125×, 0.25×, 0.5×, 1×, 2×, 4×, 8×, and 16× rates. The 1× rate equaled the maximum labeled rate of carfentrazone (35.1 g ai ha−1) that would be applied to an area of 0.360 m2. Both the drench and subsurface trials showed an increase in plant injury and reduced growth as the rate of carfentrazone increased. The drench trial, however, was observed to have higher visible injury and greater growth reduction (based on plant measurement) than the subsurface trial, when comparing similar rates. For the 1× rate of carfentrazone in the drench trial vs. the subsurface trial, injury was 66 and 24.5%, respectively. For the 1× rate the tomato plants had estimated growth, based on the curves fit for the data, of 4.8% vs. 39.9% for the drench and subsurface trials, respectively. The subsurface trial better represents what happens in the field when carfentrazone root uptake injury is observed since it is normally observed to be around 10% or less. This still leaves a level of concern; once a 10% injury level in the subsurface trial was estimated to have reduced tomato growth, fruit weight, and total shoot dry weight by 33, 15, and 9.5%, respectively.

Widespread Legionella pneumophila contamination of dental stations in a dental school without apparent human infection

Following isolation of Legionella pneumophila from a special dental station water circuit, used primarily to cool high-speed dental drills which produce fine aerosols, a case finding and environmental survey was undertaken. Widespread colonization of the dental stations was found and the results suggested that amplification of the background levels of L. pneumophila was taking place within the stations. However there was no evidence for transmission causing human infection.

The thermo-optical properties of gold nanoparticles suspended in liquid water droplets have been explored. A water droplet containing suspended gold nanoparticles was irradiated with a laser beam and the efficiency of light-to-heat conversion (η) was determined. Heat generated by the optically stimulated nanoparticles was found to dissipate through several mechanisms. Convection currents were observed visually inside the droplet by the addition of silica beads (˜3-10 micrometers). This was determined to be the dominant mechanism of stirring within the droplet.

We studied the feeding apparatus of three species of northern ruminants representative of three feeding types: muskoxen Ovibos moschatus, Norwegian reindeer Rangifer tarandus tarandus and high Arctic Svalbard reindeer Rangifer tarandus platyhrynchus and Siberian musk deer Moschus moschiferus. The shape of the muzzle, the incisor arcade, the incisiform and the molariform teeth indicate that these species are selective feeders, irrespective of their body size or their position on the gazer-concentrate selector continuum of feeding types. Narrow muzzles seem well adapted for selective feeding on the diminutive but highly nutritious plants, or parts of plants, on tundra swards and Arctic-alpine meadows and enable the animals to maximize nutrient intake during the short summer. However, their small mouths presumably also restrict reindeer and muskoxen to taking small bites, thereby achieving low rates of dry matter intake when feeding on the very short swards in winter. This is partially obviated by two general strategies; a reduction of energy requirements in winter and, in Norwegian reindeer, migration inland to where foraging conditions are generally more favourable. In Svalbard reindeer, which have little access to lichens or other easy digestible plants in winter, rumen fill increases through the accumulation of slowly fermenting fibrous foods. Despite their narrow muzzles, reindeer and muskoxen are unable to avoid ingesting a certain amount of poor quality forage in winter and cope with this by appropriate modification of digestive function.

The uptake of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from bacterial fermentation of forage in the rumen is enhanced by the presence of papillae which greatly increase the surface area of the mucosa of the rumen. The degree of papillation, expressed as the surface enlargement factor (SEF), seems to be closely related to the level of microbial activity and the rate of production of VFAs in the rumen. In several species of wild ruminants the SEF decreases markedly in winter, apparently in response to a decrease in the quality and availability of forage and also, presumably, in the level of ruminal microbial activity. Contrary to expectation, however, no reduction in the rate of production of VFAs in winter has been detected in semi-domesticated reindeer at natural pasture in northern Norway. We investigated the body mass, the composition and quality of the diet and the morphology of rumen papillae in adult female reindeer free-living at natural pasture. Animals were slaughtered in matched aged groups of nine on four occasions: in autumn (September) and winter (November, February and March). The composition and quality of the diet was determined by morphological and chemical analysis of plant fragments recovered from the rumen. The carcass mass of the animals did not differ significantly between collections. The animals ate vascular plants and lichens from 37 different genera. The composition of the diet varied little between months except for the inclusion of a substantial proportion (25.8% of fragments) of lichens in March. The mean density of rumen papillae increased from 55.6 papillae/cm2 in September to 75.7 papillae/cm2 in March (P < 0.001). All other parameters, including the length and perimeter of the papillae and the SEF of the rumen, were lower in March compared with September. However, the mean SEF increased from 8.8 in February to 10.6 in March (P < 0.05), indicating increased ruminal fermentation in late winter. We propose that the increase in the SEF in March might be associated with the increase in the proportion of lichens in the diet. Lichens are highly digestible in reindeer but do not score highly in conventional analyses of diet quality owing to the unusual chemical structure of the structural carbohydrates of which they are composed.

Introduction
Many inorganic and organic pollutants are of great concern to water quality managers owing to their persistence, toxicity and liability to bioaccumulate (Tanabe, 1988; Robards & Worsfold, 1991; Bryan & Langston, 1992; McCain et al, 1992; Förstner, 1993). The major temporary or ultimate sink for such pollutants in estuaries is the sedimentary reservoir, including intertidal deposits (Hanson, Evans & Colby, 1993; van Zoest & van Eck, 1993; Kennicutt et al., 1994), and definition of the biogeochemical mechanisms by which they absorb onto, desorb from and repartition amongst natural, heterogeneous particle populations is essential in order to assess their environmental fate. In estuaries, prediction of the distribution of pollutants is further compounded by intense temporal and spatial gradients of the reaction controlling variables such as salinity, dissolved oxygen concentration and particle composition, occurring both within the sediment and in the water column during particle suspension.
This chapter focuses on an empirical technique to study the sorptive behaviour of trace metals and trace organic compounds in estuaries. Thus, the partitioning of constituents between particles and solution is determined experimentally, without identifying the inherent reaction mechanisms or reactant speciation, under controlled laboratory conditions using natural samples spiked with radiotracer analogues of the constituent of interest (Turner et al., 1993). Adsorption and desorption processes may be modelled as a function of particle concentration, and the controlled variables of salinity and dissolved oxygen concentration, by incorporating empirically derived results into simple mass balance equations.
Self-Interest vs. Symbolic Politics in Policy Attitudes and Presidential Voting

This article contrasts short-term self-interest and longstanding symbolic attitudes as determinants of (1) voters' attitudes toward government policy on four controversial issues (unemployment, national health insurance, busing, and law and order), and (2) issue voting concerning those policy areas. In general, we found the various self-interest measures to have very little effect in determining either policy preferences or voting behavior. In contrast, symbolic attitudes (liberal or conservative ideology, party identification, and racial prejudice) had major effects. Nor did self-interest play much of a role in creating “issue publics” that were particularly attentive to, informed about, or constrained in their attitudes about these specific policy issues. Conditions that might facilitate more self-interested political attitudes, specifically having privatistic (rather than public-regarding) personal values, perceiving the policy area as a major national problem, being high in political sophistication, perceiving the government as responsive, or having a sense of political efficacy, were also explored, but had no effect. The possibility that some long-term self-interest might be reflected in either group membership or in symbolic attitudes themselves is examined. While such possibilities cannot be definitively rejected, problems with interpreting standard demographic findings as self-interest effects are discussed.
