Foods for Specific Groups (FSGs) are a category of products for vulnerable groups including “processed cereal-based foods and baby foods” (PCFBF); “food for special medical purposes” (FSMPs); “infant formula” (IF) and “follow-on-formula” (FOF) as per Regulation (EU) No 609/2013(1). Specific labelling and compositional requirements are set out in the legislation for each of these categories of foods. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) ensures the enforcement of these regulations through service contracts with official agencies including the Health Service Executive (HSE) and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM)(2). The aims of this study were to: (1) Identify the categories and quantities of FSGs tested by official agencies in 2022 and (2) Investigate the compositional compliance of products tested.

FSG products were analysed by Official Laboratories (OLs) using accredited methods for potassium, selenium, iodine, zinc, manganese, magnesium, molybdenum, phosphorus, calcium, folic acid, sodium, iron, chromium, vitamin B2 and vitamin B1. Both the measure of uncertainty (MoU) and limit of quantification (LOQ) values were reported. Data was extracted from FSAI’s National Food Safety Surveillance database. Samples were categorised as IF, FOF, PCFBF or FSMPs as per the legislation. FSG products not available for sale in Ireland were excluded. Nutrient concentrations were assessed against the limits permitted in legislation.

Of the total FSG products tested (n92) in 2022, nearly two-thirds (n64) were produced for the Irish market, with the remainder (n28) produced for export. The majority (n51) of Irish products were sampled by the HSE including IF (n10), FOF (n8) PCFBF (n7) and FSMPs (n26). The remaining Irish products (n13) were sampled by DAFM - IF (n6), FOF (n6), and FSMPs (n1). The majority of PCFBF (n6), IF (n14), FOF (n13) tested were deemed compliant, while only 44% (n12) of FSMPs sampled were compliant with the legislation. Possible non-compliance of FSMPs was due to high levels of selenium, chromium, and molybdenum. Possible non-compliance of FOF and IF was due to high levels of selenium. PCFBF possible non-compliance was due to high levels of potassium. However, the analytical MoU values for the nutrients ranged from 0.04 % to 44% which makes judgement of compliance difficult in some instances.

This study gives an overview of FSG products tested by official agencies including their compliance with compositional regulations. Overall, compositional compliance across FSG products is high. However, possible non- compliances were identified due to the wide range of MoUs and their overlap with some permitted limits for certain nutrients. Another issue identified is that some LOQs were higher than the maximum permitted level in legislation. Future work for the FSAI will involve working with the OLs to accredit more sensitive methods, thus facilitating better official controls.

Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 outlines the rules for nutrition and health claims (NHCs), permitted in the European Union (EU)(1). Previously, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) completed work on the compliance of NHCs with Regulation 1924/2006 on yoghurts(2). Potential noncompliant rates of 1.5% for nutrition claims and 74% for health claims were reported. The study highlighted further research in this area was needed to understand the overall rates of NHCs compliance of food products on the Irish market. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the compliance of NHCs made on delicatessen meats and similar (DM) and bread products (BP) on the Irish market.

Food product label and composition information was collected from the Irish market in 2021 as part of the EU Joint Action Best-ReMaP project. The inclusion criteria for this study were the presence of an Irish address and NHCs on the product label. Based on these criteria, 14.6% of DM and 47.9% of BP were eligible for inclusion in this study. A representative sample of 100 products per category were randomly selected, using the RAND Excel function, and compliance was assessed against Regulation 1924/2006. NHCs were considered either compliant, non-compliant or potentially non-compliant. Where definitive compliance could not be established using the Regulation, a claim was deemed potentially non-compliant. Analysis was conducted using Microsoft Excel.

There were 205 claims identified on the 100 DM products. The compliance rate of these claims was 85.4% (n = 175) and the non-compliance rate was 14.6% (n = 30). Of the 30 non-compliant claims observed across 9 DM products, 28 of these were non-compliant as the amount of the claimed nutrient was not labelled. The other 2 non-compliant claims were general health claims which were not linked to an authorised health claim. There were 293 claims on the 100 BP with a compliance rate of 85.3% (n = 250), a non-compliance rate of 12.9% (n = 38) and a potentially non-compliant rate of 1.7% (n = 5). The 43 non-compliant and potentially non-compliant claims were observed across 23 products. Most (n = 24) of which were due to non-compliant general health claims. The overall compliance of products was 91% (n = 91) for DM and 77% (n = 77) for BP.

Overall, this study demonstrates that there is a high rate of compliance for nutrition claims on DM and BP while identifying some key areas of non-compliance in health claims. This work provides important information for the FSAI as it identifies the issues faced by businesses in complying with the legislation and assists in understanding what compliance building resources are needed. Future work in this area is needed to assess the level of compliance of NHCs on other food categories on the Irish market.

Caffeine, a natural stimulant, is found in foods, beverages, and food supplements (FS). Excessive caffeine consumption has been associated with cardiovascular impairments, anxiousness and sleep disruptions1. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) estimated safe intake levels of caffeine: a single dose of up to 200mg and a daily intake of up to 400mg, are considered safe for the general population2. Regulation (EU)1169/2011 requires products containing caffeine to include additional labelling warnings, ‘Contains caffeine’ or ‘High caffeine content’3. In Ireland, all FS placed on the market must be notified to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) via the Food Notifications System (FNS)4.

The aims of this study were to: (1) Identify caffeine-containing FS notified to the FSAI from January 1st to December 31st 2023, (2) Investigate whether these FS comply with relevant labelling requirements, (3) Assess the safety of these products in line with the EFSA safe intake levels.

Data on caffeine-containing FS notified to the FSAI in 2023 was extracted from the FSAI FNS. Information extracted included product name, contains caffeine/high caffeine content statements, amount of caffeine, ingredients list and directions for use. Analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS (version 29.0.01).

There were 325 caffeine-containing FS notified to the FSAI in 2023. This study identified 8 categories of caffeine-containing FS, based on their function: pre-workout (n163), botanicals (n14), vitamin and minerals (n12), gaming (n7), before and/or during exercise (n45), fat burners (n57), general stimulants (n23) and energy drinks (n4).

Over 80% of these FS (n276) used “contains caffeine” and 9% (n30) used “high caffeine content” statements on their label. The remaining 5% (n19) used neither statement. Less than a fifth (14%) (n45) of notified FS did not comply with legislative labelling warnings (these products contained incorrect or no caffeine labelling statements) while the remaining 86% (n280) were deemed compliant.

Notified FS contained information on directions for use and were either to be consumed once-aday (n243) or multiple times throughout the day (n82). Over a quarter (n90) of the once-a-day FS exceeded EFSA’s safe single-dose intake of 200mg. Additionally n2 of the FS contained caffeine in amounts exceeding EFSA’s safe daily intake limit of 400mg.

This study identified FS on the Irish market with high caffeine content, exceeding both EFSA’s safe single-dose and daily intake levels, before additional dietary sources of caffeine are considered. Labelling compliance rates in this study are high. The FSAI will continue to monitor this category of FS, as the market of caffeine-containing FS grows.

Next generation high-power laser facilities are expected to generate hundreds-of-MeV proton beams and operate at multi-Hz repetition rates, presenting opportunities for medical, industrial and scientific applications requiring bright pulses of energetic ions. Characterizing the spectro-spatial profile of these ions at high repetition rates in the harsh radiation environments created by laser–plasma interactions remains challenging but is paramount for further source development. To address this, we present a compact scintillating fiber imaging spectrometer based on the tomographic reconstruction of proton energy deposition in a layered fiber array. Modeling indicates that spatial resolution of approximately 1 mm and energy resolution of less than 10% at proton energies of more than 20 MeV are readily achievable with existing 100 μm diameter fibers. Measurements with a prototype beam-profile monitor using 500 μm fibers demonstrate active readouts with invulnerability to electromagnetic pulses, and less than 100 Gy sensitivity. The performance of the full instrument concept is explored with Monte Carlo simulations, accurately reconstructing a proton beam with a multiple-component spectro-spatial profile.

The expensive-tissue hypothesis (ETH) posited a brain–gut trade-off to explain how humans evolved large, costly brains. Versions of the ETH interrogating gut or other body tissues have been tested in non-human animals, but not humans. We collected brain and body composition data in 70 South Asian women and used structural equation modelling with instrumental variables, an approach that handles threats to causal inference including measurement error, unmeasured confounding and reverse causality. We tested a negative, causal effect of the latent construct ‘nutritional investment in brain tissues’ (MRI-derived brain volumes) on the construct ‘nutritional investment in lean body tissues’ (organ volume and skeletal muscle). We also predicted a negative causal effect of the brain latent on fat mass. We found negative causal estimates for both brain and lean tissue (−0.41, 95% CI, −1.13, 0.23) and brain and fat (−0.56, 95% CI, −2.46, 2.28). These results, although inconclusive, are consistent with theory and prior evidence of the brain trading off with lean and fat tissues, and they are an important step in assessing empirical evidence for the ETH in humans. Analyses using larger datasets, genetic data and causal modelling are required to build on these findings and expand the evidence base.

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] that lack resistance to auxin herbicides [i.e., not genetically modified for resistance] have well-documented responses to those particular herbicides, with yield loss being probable. When a soybean field is injured by auxin herbicides, regulatory authorities often collect a plant sample from that field. This research attempted to simulate soybean exposures due to accidental mixing of incorrect herbicides, tank contamination, or particle drift. This research examined whether analytical testing of herbicide residues on soybean to aminocyclopyrachlor (ACP), aminopyralid, 2,4-D, or dicamba would be related to the visual observations and yield responses from these herbicides. ACP and aminopyralid were applied to R1 soybean at 0.1, 1, and 10 g ae ha−1; 2,4-D and dicamba were applied at 1, 10, and 100 g ae ha−1. Visual evaluations and plant sample collections were undertaken at 1, 3, 7, 14, and 21 d after treatment (DAT), and yield was measured. The conservative limits of detection for the four herbicides in this project were 5, 10, 5, and 5 ng g−1 fresh weight of soybean for ACP, aminopyralid, 2,4-D, and dicamba, respectively. Many of the plant samples were non-detects, especially at lower application dosages. All herbicide concentrations rapidly declined soon after application, and many reached nondetectable limits by 14 DAT. All herbicide treatments caused soybean injury, although the response to 2,4-D was markedly lower than the responses to the other three herbicides. There was no apparent correlation between herbicide concentrations (which were declining over time) and the observed soybean injury (which was increasing over time or staying the same). This research indicated that plant samples should be collected as soon as possible after soybean exposure to auxin herbicides.

Spacecraft can carry microbial contaminants from spacecraft assembly facilities (SAFs) to the cold arid surface of Mars that may confound life detection missions or disrupt native ecosystems. Dry hygroscopic sulphate and (per)chlorate salts on Mars may absorb atmospheric humidity and deliquesce at certain times to produce dense brines, potential sources of liquid water. Microbial growth is generally prohibited under the non-permissive condition of extremely low water activity in the frigid potential brines on Mars. Here we challenged the microbial community from samples of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory SAF with the extreme chemical conditions of brines relevant to Mars. Enrichment cultures in SP medium supplemented with 50% MgSO4 or 20% NaClO3 were inoculated from washes of SAF floor wipes. Samples were taken for each of the first four weeks and then at six months after inoculation to follow changes in the SAF microbial community under high salinity for long periods. Metagenomic DNA extracts of community samples were examined by Illumina sequencing of 18S rRNA gene sequences using fungal primers. The fungal assemblage during the first month of enrichment was predominantly common Ascomycetes, primarily Saccharomyete yeasts. Basidiomycetes were detected, mainly in the Microbotryomycetes and Tremellomycetes. Fungi were much less abundant in enrichment cultures at 50% MgSO4 than at 20% NaClO3. After 6 months of enrichment, few fungi remained. Microbes persisting from the JPL SAF microbial community in aged cultures enriched at extreme salinities might be the most capable of subsequently surviving and proliferating at the near surface of Mars. The SAF fungal assemblage did not survive and proliferate as well as the SAF bacterial community.

Cow’s milk is the primary source of calcium in the NZ diet(1). The absence of dietary planning in a vegan diet can result in the individual unknowingly obtaining low intakes of calcium. Prolonged low calcium intakes can result in negative implications on bone mineral density by increasing the risk of osteoporosis later in life. The measurement of bone health parameters in NZ vegan adults have not been investigated. Therefore, we measured bone mineral density, markers of calcium homeostasis and assessed intake of essential nutrients for optimal bone health in vegans. This cross-sectional study included adults (>18yrs), who followed a vegan diet for 2 years minimum. Demographic and lifestyle information was obtained from questionnaires including previous history of bone fractures and background of familial osteoporosis. A 4-day food record was completed for analysis of calcium, zinc, protein, magnesium, phosphorus and vitamin C intake and compared to the Estimated Average Requirement (EAR)(2). Weight, height and BMI were obtained, bone mineral density was measured at the hip and spine via dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and reported as Z and T scores. Plasma calcium concentrations were corrected for albumin. All values are presented as mean and standard deviation. The study included 212 participants, aged 39 ± 12.38 years, 71% female. T scores at the lumbar spine and femoral neck were −0.63 ± 1.22 (Z score: −0.29 ± 1.12) and −0.66 ± 1.00 (Z score: −0.24 ± 0.89), respectively. Nine participants had a Z-score of <-2.0 at the lumbar spine, and three at the femoral neck. Corrected calcium concentrations were 2.21 ± 0.33 mmol/L. Calcium intake was 917 ± 347.23 (range 195 to 2,429 mg/day) in all participants, which exceeded the EAR of 840 mg/day for adults aged 19-50 years. Men had higher intakes of calcium than women, 1,051 ± 363.7 mg/day (range 382 to 2,267 mg/day) vs. 867 ± 328.04 mg/day (range 194 to 2,428 mg/day), P-value <0.001. The main source of calcium in the vegan diet was tofu. The intake of protein (77 ± 27.80) g/day, magnesium (569 ± 181.05) mg/day, and vitamin C (145 ± 96.94) mg/day met the EAR, excluding vitamin and mineral supplements. However, the intake of phosphorus (1,472 ± 459.98) mg/day and zinc (10.6 ± 4.01) mg/day were below the EAR. The findings of this study suggest that bone health of vegans are not negatively affected by the exclusion of dairy in the diet, provided that appropriate dietary planning is included to avoid nutrient deficiencies associated with poor bone health. Despite mean intake of calcium exceeding the EAR, very low intakes demonstrated significant variations between participants.

Adsorption of Cu2+ and Co2+ by synthetic imogolite, synthetic allophanes with a range of SiO2/ Al2O3 ratios, and allophanic clay fractions from volcanic ash soils was measured in an ionic medium of 0.05 M Ca(NO3)2. The effect of pH (and metal concentration) on adsorption was qualitatively similar for the synthetic and natural allophanes with relatively minor changes in behavior caused by variable SiO2/Al2O3 ratios. Cu and Co were chemisorbed by allophane at pH 5.0–5.5 and 6.9–7.2 (pH values for 50% adsorption level), respectively, with concomitant release of 1.6–1.9 protons/metal ion adsorbed. Quantitatively, adsorption by imogolite was less than that by the allophanes, presumably because of fewer sites available for chemisorption on the tubular structure of imogolite. Electron spin resonance studies of the imogolite and allophanes revealed that Cu2+ was adsorbed as a monomer on two types of surface sites. The preferred sites were likely adjacent AlOH groups binding Cu2+ by a binuclear mechanism; weaker bonding occurred at isolated AlOH or SiOH groups. These chemisorbed forms of Cu2+ were readily extracted by EDTA, CH3COOH, and metals capable of specific adsorption, but were not exchangeable. In addition, the H2O and/or OH− ligands of chemisorbed Cu2+ were readily displaced by NH3, with the formation of ternary Cu-ammonia-surface complexes.

The negative surface charge of synthetic allophanes with a range of Si/Al ratios decreased and positive charge increased with increasing alumina content at a given pH. The phosphate adsorption capacity also increased with increasing Al content. That this relationship between composition and chemical reactivity was not found for the soil allophanes is attributed to the presence of specifically adsorbed organic or inorganic anions on the natural material. Both synthetic and natural imogolites had a much lower capacity to adsorb phosphate than the allophanes and adsorbed anomalously high amounts of Cl− and ClO4− at high pH. It is proposed that intercalation of salt occurs in imogolite, although electron spin resonance studies using spin probes failed to reveal the trapping of small organic molecules in imogolite tubes. These spin probes in the carboxylated form did, however, suggest an electrostatic retention of carboxylate by imogolite and a more specific adsorption by allophane involving ligand exchange of surface hydroxyl. The results illustrate the inherent differences in charge and surface properties of allophane and imogolite despite the common structural unit which the two minerals incorporate.

To investigate the symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection, their dynamics and their discriminatory power for the disease using longitudinally, prospectively collected information reported at the time of their occurrence. We have analysed data from a large phase 3 clinical UK COVID-19 vaccine trial. The alpha variant was the predominant strain. Participants were assessed for SARS-CoV-2 infection via nasal/throat PCR at recruitment, vaccination appointments, and when symptomatic. Statistical techniques were implemented to infer estimates representative of the UK population, accounting for multiple symptomatic episodes associated with one individual. An optimal diagnostic model for SARS-CoV-2 infection was derived. The 4-month prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 was 2.1%; increasing to 19.4% (16.0%–22.7%) in participants reporting loss of appetite and 31.9% (27.1%–36.8%) in those with anosmia/ageusia. The model identified anosmia and/or ageusia, fever, congestion, and cough to be significantly associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Symptoms’ dynamics were vastly different in the two groups; after a slow start peaking later and lasting longer in PCR+ participants, whilst exhibiting a consistent decline in PCR- participants, with, on average, fewer than 3 days of symptoms reported. Anosmia/ageusia peaked late in confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection (day 12), indicating a low discrimination power for early disease diagnosis.

Interplanetary spacecraft are built in a spacecraft assembly facility (SAF), a clean room designed to reduce microbial contamination that could confound life detection missions or influence native ecosystems. The frigid hyperarid near-surface environment of Mars has ample hygroscopic Mg and Na salts of chloride, (per)chlorate and sulphate that may deliquesce to form dense brines, liquids with low water activity, and freezing points <0°C. The current study sought to define the climax microbial community after 6 mo of enrichment of SAF floor wipe samples in salt plains medium supplemented with 50% (w/v; ~2 M; aw = 0.94) MgSO4 or 20% (w/v; ~1.9 M; aw = 0.91) NaClO3. After 1 wk, 4 wk and 6 mo of incubation, metagenomic DNA extracts of the enriched SAF microbial community were used for high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes and subsequent phylogenetic analyses. Additionally, dozens of bacterial strains were isolated by repetitive streak-plating from the climax community after 6 mo of enrichment. Early in the enrichment, staphylococci greatly dominated and then remained abundant members of the community. However, actinobacteria succeeded the staphylococci as the dominant taxa as the cultures matured, including Arthrobacter, Brachybacterium and Brevibacterium. A diverse assemblage of bacilli was present, with Oceanobacillus being especially abundant. The SAF culture collection included representatives of Brachybacterium conglomeratum, Brevibacterium sediminis, Oceanobacillus picturae and Staphylococcus sciuri. These were characterized with biochemical and physiological tests, revealing their high salinotolerance. Shannon diversity indices were generally near 2, reflecting modest diversity at several levels of identity and the community structures were uneven throughout. However, minor members of the community seem capable of the ecosystem functions required for biogeochemical cycling. For instance, organisms capable of all the functions of the N cycle were detected. The microbial assemblage in SAFs is the most likely to be transported by spacecraft to another world. While individual microbial populations may exhibit the qualities needed for survival at the near-surface of Mars, certainly entire communities with the capacity for complete biogeochemical cycling, would have a greater chance of survival and proliferation.
