This study shows the impact of black carbon (BC) aerosol atmospheric rivers (AAR) on the Antarctic Sea ice retreat. We detect that a higher number of BC AARs arrived in the Antarctic region due to increased anthropogenic wildfire activities in 2019 in the Amazon compared to 2018. Our analyses suggest that the BC AARs led to a reduction in the sea ice albedo, increased the amount of sunlight absorbed at the surface, and a significant reduction of sea ice over the Weddell, Ross Sea (Ross), and Indian Ocean (IO) regions in 2019. The Weddell region experienced the largest amount of sea ice retreat ($ \sim \mathrm{33,000} $ km2) during the presence of BC AARs as compared to $ \sim \mathrm{13,000} $ km2 during non-BC days. We used a suite of data science techniques, including random forest, elastic net regression, matrix profile, canonical correlations, and causal discovery analyses, to discover the effects and validate them. Random forest, elastic net regression, and causal discovery analyses show that the shortwave upward radiative flux or the reflected sunlight, temperature, and longwave upward energy from the earth are the most important features that affect sea ice extent. Canonical correlation analysis confirms that aerosol optical depth is negatively correlated with albedo, positively correlated with shortwave energy absorbed at the surface, and negatively correlated with Sea Ice Extent. The relationship is stronger in 2019 than in 2018. This study also employs the matrix profile and convolution operation of the Convolution Neural Network (CNN) to detect anomalous events in sea ice loss. These methods show that a higher amount of anomalous melting events were detected over the Weddell and Ross regions.

We present the first results from a new backend on the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder, the Commensal Realtime ASKAP Fast Transient COherent (CRACO) upgrade. CRACO records millisecond time resolution visibility data, and searches for dispersed fast transient signals including fast radio bursts (FRB), pulsars, and ultra-long period objects (ULPO). With the visibility data, CRACO can localise the transient events to arcsecond-level precision after the detection. Here, we describe the CRACO system and report the result from a sky survey carried out by CRACO at 110-ms resolution during its commissioning phase. During the survey, CRACO detected two FRBs (including one discovered solely with CRACO, FRB 20231027A), reported more precise localisations for four pulsars, discovered two new RRATs, and detected one known ULPO, GPM J1839 $-$10, through its sub-pulse structure. We present a sensitivity calibration of CRACO, finding that it achieves the expected sensitivity of 11.6 Jy ms to bursts of 110 ms duration or less. CRACO is currently running at a 13.8 ms time resolution and aims at a 1.7 ms time resolution before the end of 2024. The planned CRACO has an expected sensitivity of 1.5 Jy ms to bursts of 1.7 ms duration or less and can detect $10\times$ more FRBs than the current CRAFT incoherent sum system (i.e. 0.5 $-$2 localised FRBs per day), enabling us to better constrain the models for FRBs and use them as cosmological probes.

With wide-field phased array feed technology, the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) is ideally suited to search for seemingly rare radio transient sources that are difficult to discover previous-generation narrow-field telescopes. The Commensal Real-time ASKAP Fast Transient (CRAFT) Survey Science Project has developed instrumentation to continuously search for fast radio transients (duration ≲ 1 second) with ASKAP, with a particular focus on finding and localising Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs). Since 2018, the CRAFT survey has been searching for FRBs and other fast transients by incoherently adding the intensities received by individual ASKAP antennas, and then correcting for the impact of frequency dispersion on these short-duration signals in the resultant incoherent sum (ICS) in real-time. This low-latency detection enables the triggering of voltage buffers, which facilitates the localisation of the transient source and the study of spectro-polarimetric properties at high time resolution. Here we report the sample of 43 FRBs discovered in this CRAFT/ICS survey to date. This includes 22 FRBs that had not previously been reported: 16 FRBs localised by ASKAP to. ≲ 1 arcsec and 6 FRBs localised to ∼ 10 arcmin. Of the new arcsecond-localised FRBs, we have identified and characterised host galaxies (and measured redshifts) for 11. The median of all 30 measured host redshifts from the survey to date is z = 0.23. We summarise results from the searches, in particular those contributing to our understanding of the burst progenitors and emission mechanisms, and on the use of bursts as probes of intervening media. We conclude by foreshadowing future FRB surveys with ASKAP using a coherent detection system that is currently being commissioned. This will increase the burst detection rate by a factor of approximately ten and also the distance to which ASKAP can localise FRBs.

Vaccines have revolutionised the field of medicine, eradicating and controlling many diseases. Recent pandemic vaccine successes have highlighted the accelerated pace of vaccine development and deployment. Leveraging this momentum, attention has shifted to cancer vaccines and personalised cancer vaccines, aimed at targeting individual tumour-specific abnormalities. The UK, now regarded for its vaccine capabilities, is an ideal nation for pioneering cancer vaccine trials. This article convened experts to share insights and approaches to navigate the challenges of cancer vaccine development with personalised or precision cancer vaccines, as well as fixed vaccines. Emphasising partnership and proactive strategies, this article outlines the ambition to harness national and local system capabilities in the UK; to work in collaboration with potential pharmaceutic partners; and to seize the opportunity to deliver the pace for rapid advances in cancer vaccine technology.

Weekly cycles in emotion were examined by combining item response modeling and spectral analysis approaches in an analysis of 179 college students' reports of daily emotions experienced over 7 weeks. We addressed the measurement of emotion using an item response model. Spectral analysis and multilevel sinusoidal models were used to identify interindividual differences in intraindividual cyclic change. Simulations and incomplete data designs were used to examine how well this combination of analysis techniques might work when applied to other practical data problems. Empirically, we found systematic individual differences in the extent to which individuals' emotions follow a weekly cycle, and in how such cycles are exhibited. Weekly cycles accounted for very little variance in day to day emotions at the individual level. Analytically, we illustrate how measurement, change, and interindividual difference models from different traditions may be combined in a practical manner to describe some of the complexities of human behavior.

Objectives: Antipsychotic use among patients with Alzheimer’s dementia can pose safety concerns, including accidents/injuries, cardiovascular events, extrapyramidal symptoms, and somnolence/sedation. In the US, brexpiprazole is approved for the treatment of agitation associated with dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease. This post hoc analysis aimed to evaluate the timing and duration of treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) in three randomized clinical trials of brexpiprazole.

Methods: Data were included from three Phase 3, 12-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials of brexpiprazole in patients with agitation associated with Alzheimer’s dementia (ClinicalTrials.gov identifiers: NCT01862640, NCT01922258, NCT03548584). Data for all patients who received ≥1 dose of trial medication were pooled by randomized dose group: brexpiprazole 0.5 or 1 mg/day (fixed-dose), brexpiprazole 2 or 3 mg/day (fixed- dose) (FDA- approved recommended-to-maximum dose), brexpiprazole 0.5 – 2 mg/day (flexible-dose), and placebo. Time-to-event analyses were performed to first occurrence of any TEAE, any serious TEAE, discontinuation due to AE, and TEAEs of interest, separately, and presented using descriptive statistics and Kaplan–Meier Methodsology. The duration of all TEAEs in each category was also determined.

Results: The pooled sample comprised 1,043 patients. Median time to first TEAE was 24 days with brexpiprazole .5 or 1 mg/day (fixed-dose), 32 days with brexpiprazole 2 or 3 mg/day (fixed-dose), 28 days with brexpiprazole 0.5–2 mg/day (flexible-dose), and 28 days with placebo. Median duration of all TEAEs was 7 days, 6 days, 8 days, and 4 days (respectively). Median time to (and incidence of) discontinuation due to AEs was 45 days (8.9%) with brexpiprazole 0.5 or 1 mg/day, 46.5 days (4.9%) with brexpiprazole 2 or 3 mg/day, 30 days (6.8%) with brexpiprazole 0.5 –2 mg/day, and 30 days (3.4%) with placebo. The incidence of serious TEAEs and TEAEs of interest is presented in the Table.

Conclusions: In patients with agitation in Alzheimer’s dementia, time to first occurrence of any TEAE was similar between brexpiprazole 2 or 3 mg/day (FDA-approved recommended-to- maximum dose) and placebo, and time to discontinuation due to AEs was longer with brexpiprazole 2 or 3 mg/day than placebo. Overall, no unexpected safety concerns were revealed by this analysis.

Efficient evidence generation to assess the clinical and economic impact of medical therapies is critical amid rising healthcare costs and aging populations. However, drug development and clinical trials remain far too expensive and inefficient for all stakeholders. On October 25–26, 2023, the Duke Clinical Research Institute brought together leaders from academia, industry, government agencies, patient advocacy, and nonprofit organizations to explore how different entities and influencers in drug development and healthcare can realign incentive structures to efficiently accelerate evidence generation that addresses the highest public health needs. Prominent themes surfaced, including competing research priorities and incentives, inadequate representation of patient population in clinical trials, opportunities to better leverage existing technology and infrastructure in trial design, and a need for heightened transparency and accountability in research practices. The group determined that together these elements contribute to an inefficient and costly clinical research enterprise, amplifying disparities in population health and sustaining gaps in evidence that impede advancements in equitable healthcare delivery and outcomes. The goal of addressing the identified challenges is to ultimately make clinical trials faster, more inclusive, and more efficient across diverse communities and settings.

Consider the flow through a channel with grooved edges on one (or both) side(s). If heating is applied to the boundaries, thermal drift is the flow generated by the interaction of the groove and heating patterns. It is known that, if one side of a channel is smooth while the other is grooved, the application of heating forms a so-called ‘thermal drift engine’. Two thermal drift engines are activated if both surfaces are grooved, and these may reinforce or oppose each other. Carefully choosing these engines can lead to an intensification of the thermal drift. The interplay of two drift engines is explored using a horizontal slot with grooves that have a sinusoidal profile with a prescribed wavenumber $\alpha $. It is shown that the strength of the flow decreases proportional to $\alpha $ as $\alpha \to 0$ and proportional to ${\alpha ^{ - 1}}$ as $\alpha \to \infty $. We determine the value of $\alpha $ corresponding to the strongest flow and characterize how the conclusions should be modified if a uniform heating component is added to the heating pattern.

The effectiveness of utilizing heating patterns as a drag-reduction tool in sloping channels is analysed. The usefulness of heating is judged by determining the pressure gradient required to maintain the same flow rate as in the isothermal case. The key to reducing pressure loss is the formation of separation bubbles, although these bubbles are washed away at relatively large Reynolds numbers. The bubbles reduce the direct contact between the stream and the side walls, thereby reducing the friction experienced by the flow. Moreover, the fluid inside the bubbles tends to rotate, a motion provoked by longitudinal temperature gradients. This rotation also seems to reduce the resistance. On the other hand, the existence of the bubbles tends to obstruct the stream, increasing the flow resistance. In general, channels oriented close to horizontal experience a relatively small pressure loss, but this loss grows markedly as the channel inclines towards the vertical. When modest heating is applied, the pressure loss is approximately proportional to the square of the associated Rayleigh number. It is also shown that if the heating wavelength is too short or too long, the heating loses its effectiveness. In certain circumstances, it turns out that the theoretical pressure-gradient reduction achieved by judicious heating is so large that it exceeds the pressure gradient required to drive the flow in the isothermal problem. The conclusion is that in these instances, a pressure gradient of the opposite sign must be applied to prevent flow acceleration.

Background: After a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or minor stroke, the long-term risk of subsequent stroke is uncertain. Methods: Electronic databases were searched for observational studies reporting subsequent stroke during a minimum follow-up of 1 year in patients with TIA or minor stroke. Unpublished data on number of stroke events and exact person-time at risk contributed by all patients during discrete time intervals of follow-up were requested from the authors of included studies. This information was used to calculate the incidence of stroke in individual studies, and results across studies were pooled using random-effects meta-analysis. Results: Fifteen independent cohorts involving 129794 patients were included in the analysis. The pooled incidence rate of subsequent stroke per 100 person-years was 6.4 events in the first year and 2.0 events in the second through tenth years, with cumulative incidences of 14% at 5 years and 21% at 10 years. Based on 10 studies with information available on fatal stroke, the pooled case fatality rate of subsequent stroke was 9.5% (95% CI, 5.9 – 13.8). Conclusions: One in five patients is expected to experience a subsequent stroke within 10 years after a TIA or minor stroke, with every tenth patient expected to die from their subsequent stroke.

We created a web-based design guide to transfer our previous research findings to better support design education in the digital health design area for improving patient experience. To seek insights to iteratively improve the design guide, we conducted a workshop with 19 MSc students who specialized in design for healthcare. The guide was perceived as having the potential to improve their understanding of digital PEx improvements, but the content clarity and information presentation need to be improved.

The catalytic power of Ca-nontronite, Ca-bentonite, and Ca-kaolinite in promoting the abiotic ring cleavage of pyrogallol (1,2,3-trihydroxybenzene) and the associated formation of humic polymers was studied in systems free of microbial activity. The presence of Ca-kaolinite and especially Ca-nontronite in the pyrogallol solutions at pH 6.00 greatly enhanced the absorbance at both 472 and 664 nm of the supernatants. At an initial pH of 6.00 and at the end of a 90-hr reaction period, the amounts of CO2 released from the ring cleavage of pyrogallol and the yields of the resultant humic polymers formed in the reaction systems followed the same sequence: Ca-nontronite > Ca-kaolinite > Ca-bentonite. The data indicate that the catalytic power of Fe(III) on the edges and in the structure of nontronite was substantially greater than that of Al on the edges of kaolinite and montmorillonite and of a small amount of Fe(III) in the structure of montmorillonite in promoting the reactions. The infrared and electron spin resonance spectra and the solid-state, cross-polarization magic-angle-spinning 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of humic polymers formed in the reaction systems resembled those of natural humic substances.

We present source detection and catalogue construction pipelines to build the first catalogue of radio galaxies from the 270 $\rm deg^2$ pilot survey of the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU-PS) conducted with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope. The detection pipeline uses Gal-DINO computer vision networks (Gupta et al. 2024, PASA, 41, e001) to predict the categories of radio morphology and bounding boxes for radio sources, as well as their potential infrared host positions. The Gal-DINO network is trained and evaluated on approximately 5 000 visually inspected radio galaxies and their infrared hosts, encompassing both compact and extended radio morphologies. We find that the Intersection over Union (IoU) for the predicted and ground-truth bounding boxes is larger than 0.5 for 99% of the radio sources, and 98% of predicted host positions are within $3^{\prime \prime}$ of the ground-truth infrared host in the evaluation set. The catalogue construction pipeline uses the predictions of the trained network on the radio and infrared image cutouts based on the catalogue of radio components identified using the Selavy source finder algorithm. Confidence scores of the predictions are then used to prioritise Selavy components with higher scores and incorporate them first into the catalogue. This results in identifications for a total of 211 625 radio sources, with 201 211 classified as compact and unresolved. The remaining 10 414 are categorised as extended radio morphologies, including 582 FR-I, 5 602 FR-II, 1 494 FR-x (uncertain whether FR-I or FR-II), 2 375 R (single-peak resolved) radio galaxies, and 361 with peculiar and other rare morphologies. Each source in the catalogue includes a confidence score. We cross-match the radio sources in the catalogue with the infrared and optical catalogues, finding infrared cross-matches for 73% and photometric redshifts for 36% of the radio galaxies. The EMU-PS catalogue and the detection pipelines presented here will be used towards constructing catalogues for the main EMU survey covering the full southern sky.

Polynuclear Al13 tridecamer species are the major hydrolyzed species of aluminum, but their occurrence in terrestrial environments has not been established. X-ray diffraction (XRD), 27Al nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses show that the presence of tartaric acid (concentration range of 10−5–10−3 M), one of the commonly occurring low-molecular-weight organic acids, inhibits the formation of the Al13 tridecamer species.

In the absence of tartaric acid, the basic aluminum sulfate crystals were of tetrahedral morphology and conformed to isometric symmetry with a = 17.748 Å and space group of P4232. Increasing amounts of tartaric acid [tartaric acid/Al molar ratio (R) ranging from 0.01 to 0.05] modified the crystal morphology from the tetrahedral particles of isometric symmetry (R = 0) to rod-shaped particles of monoclinic symmetry (R = 0.01) to irregularly shaped X-ray noncrystalline microparticles (R = 0.05). Failure to detect the presence of Al13 tridecamer, the dominant hydrolyzed species of aluminum, in terrestrial environments may be partially attributed to the presence of low-molecular-weight organic acids, which inhibit the formation of Al13 tridecamer species.

Recently released Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) land surface temperature (LST) collection 6.1 (C6.1) products are useful for understanding ice–atmosphere interactions over East Antarctica, but their accuracy should be known prior to application. This study assessed Level 2 and Level 3 MODIS C6.1 LST products (MxD11_L2 and MxD11C1) in comparison with the radiance-derived in situ LSTs from 12 weather stations. Significant cloud-related issues were identified in both LST products. By utilizing a stricter filter based on automatic weather station cloud data, despite losing 29.4% of the data, accuracy of MODIS LST was greatly improved. The cloud-screened MODIS LST exhibited cold biases (−5.18 to −0.07°C, and root mean square errors from 2.37 to 6.28°C) than in situ LSTs at most stations, with smaller cold biases at inland stations, but larger ones at coastal regions and the edge of plateau. The accuracy was notably higher during warm periods (October–March) than during cold periods (April–September). The cloud-screened MODIS C6.1 LST did not show significant improvements over C5 (Collection 5) version across East Antarctica. Ice-crystal precipitation occurring during temperature inversions at the surface (Tair-Tsurface) played a crucial role in MODIS LST accuracy on inland plateau. In coastal regions, larger MODIS LST biases were observed when the original measurements were lower.

The attitude-tracking problem of hypersonic morphing vehicles (HMVs) is investigated in this research. After introducing variable-span wings, the optimal aerodynamic shape is available throughout the entire flight mission. However, the morphing wings cause significant changes in aerodynamic coefficients and mass distribution, challenging the attitude control. Therefore, a complete design procedure for the flight control system is proposed to address the issue. Firstly, the original model and the control-oriented model of HMVs are built. Secondly, in order to eliminate the influence caused by the multisource uncertainties, an adaptive fixed-time disturbance observer combined with fuzzy control theory is established. Thirdly, the fixed-time control method is developed to stabilise hypersonic morphing vehicles based on a multivariable sliding mode manifold. The control input can be obtained directly. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is proved with the help of the Lyapunov theory and simulation results.

The Al13 polycation is the predominant hydroxy-Al species in partially neutralized solutions. However, the existence of the Al13 species and the factors governing its formation in terrestrial environments still remain obscure. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of pyrogallol, a common polyphenol in soils, on the formation of Al13 tridecamer. Hydroxy-Al solutions with an OH/Al molar ratio of 2.2 (pH 4.53) at pyrogallol/Al molar ratios of 0, 0.01, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5 were prepared and mixed with 0.5 M sodium sulfate to form aluminum sulfate precipitation products. The solid-state 27Al nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of the precipitates show that the pyrogallol perturbed the formation of Al13 tridecamer species as indicated by the decrease in the intensity of resonance peak, observed at 62.5 ppm, with increase in the pyrogallol/Al molar ratio. The crystallization of the precipitated Al sulfates was also hampered by pyrogallol, resulting in the formation of X-ray non-crystalline products at a pyrogallol/Al molar ratio of 0.50. The absorbance at 465 and 650 nm of the hydroxy-Al-pyrogallol solutions, the C coprecipitated, the electron spin resonance and 13C CPMAS-NMR spectra of the precipitates indicate the concomitant enhanced abiotic humification of pyrogallol by the X-ray amorphous Al species.

Blood-culture overutilization is associated with increased cost and excessive antimicrobial use. We implemented an intervention in the adult intensive care unit (ICU), combining education based on the DISTRIBUTE algorithm and restriction to infectious diseases and ICU providers. Our intervention led to reduced blood-culture utilization without affecting safety metrics.
