Sets of replicate hydraulic conductivity tests were conducted using 100 mM KCl and 20 and 40 mM CaCl2 solutions to evaluate how changes in hydraulic conductivity are related to changes in the exchange complex and physical properties (water content and free swell) of prehydrated and non-prehydrated bentonite used for geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs). Essentially no change in hydraulic conductivity and water content (or void ratio) occurred during tests with the 100 mM KCl solution even though K+ was replacing Na+ on the exchange complex. In contrast, for the CaCl2 solutions (20 mM and 40 mM), the hydraulic conductivity increased and the free swell and water content decreased as exchange of Ca2+ for Na+ occurred. Faster changes in hydraulic conductivity and the exchange complex occurred in the tests with the 40 mM CaCl2 solution and the non-prehydrated bentonite (i.e. the hydraulic conductivity changed more rapidly when exchange occurred more rapidly). Even though exchange of Ca2+ for Na+ was essentially complete at the end of testing, the hydraulic conductivity obtained with the 20 mM CaCl2 solution was less and the water content greater than obtained with the 40 mM CaCl2 solution (2.6 × 10−8 cm/s vs. 6.7 × 10−8 cm/s, 122% vs. 111%, and 3.2 vs. 2.9). Similarly, the prehydrated bentonite had lower hydraulic conductivity (1.9 × 10−8 cm/s vs. 6.7 × 10−8 cm/s) and greater water content (167% vs. 111%) than the non-prehydrated bentonite at the end of testing, even though Ca-for-Na exchange was essentially complete.

This study presents a mathematical formalism describing diffraction effects from periodic and mixed-layer minerals in which the outer surface layers of crystals possibly differ from layers forming the core of the crystals. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns calculated for structure models of chlorite and irregular chlorite-smectites terminated on both sides of the crystals by either brucite-like sheets or 2:1 layers show the strong influence that different outer surface layers have on the distribution of basal reflection intensities. Simulation of the experimental XRD patterns from two chlorite samples having different Fe contents shows that in these two samples the chlorite crystals were terminated by brucite-like sheets on both sides. In contrast, crystals in a corrensite sample were terminated by water molecules and exchangeable cations. The nature of diffraction effects due to outer surface layers is discussed.

DIFFaX simulations show that the 3R1 and 3R2 polytypes of hydrotalcites (HT) have distinctly different X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) patterns. The HT samples obtained by coprecipitation as well as those subjected to a subsequent hydrothermal treatment exhibit non-uniform broadening of lines in their XRPD patterns as well as anomalous variation in the intensities of the basal reflections. The reflections appearing in the mid-2θ region (30–50°; 3–1.8 Å) are excessively broadened and do not correspond to either of the 3R polytypes. This broadening is shown to be due to a stacking of layers randomly rotated about the c crystallographic axis by n × 120° (n = 1,2). The intensities of the basal reflections vary due to the departure of the layer composition from the nominal value, essentially due to an increase in the intercalated water content.

Limited information is available on microporosity in soils. A study was undertaken to investigate the micropore characteristics of four soil samples, with different particle-size distributions, and four natural silicate clay minerals. Specific surface area and the differential micropore-size distribution were taken into account to characterize the microstructure of the soils and clays. The micropore-size distributions showed a maximum contribution to the total microporosity by pores having an effective pore radius of ∼20 Å, thus indicating that that category of pore contributes more than others to the total microporosity of the system. For both soils and clays a good exponential correlation was found between the maximum contribution to the microporosity and their specific surface area. A linear relationship was also found between the microporosity of the soils and their clay content. It has been concluded that the micropore system formed by 20 Å pores is mainly located in the clay fraction of the soil, and contributes significantly to defining some of the most notable physicochemical properties of soils and clays.

Silicic vitric tuffs of the Alaçatı (Çeşme) area, west of Izmir (Turkey), are partly altered to authigenic zeolites and clay minerals. Mordenite and clinoptilolite-heulandite accompanied by smectite are the main alteration products of the tuffs. Scanning electron microscope examination indicates that mordenite forms mainly from a gel-like precursor and to a lesser degree from volcanic glass. Mordenite and clinoptilolite-heulandite have formed by the hydrolysis and dissolution of silicic vitric tuffs by thermal waters which circulated through the fracture zone into porous vitric tuffs. These thermal waters, which resulted from mixing of thermal (Na-Cl type) and groundwaters, provided the extra Na and Ca that are necessary for the formation of mordenite. Various percentages of calcite are present in the altered tuffs. The enrichment of calcite in the altered tuffs indicates that thermal waters supply Ca, sourced from dissolution of Triassic carbonate rocks.

The alteration minerals in the Alaçatı (Çeşme) area do not seem to be laterally zoned. The occurrence of the zeolites seems to be related to inferred fracture zones trending NE—SW. These fracture zones are important because they provide porosity and permeability in the tuffs for zeolite formation. The large glass content and permeability of tuffs accompanied by the favorable hydrochemical condition resulted in zeolitization of the Alaçatı (Çeşme) area.

The dissolution kinetics of sepiolite in hydrochloric acid and nitric acid were studied in a batch reactor. The effects of reaction temperature, acid concentration, particle size and solid-to-liquid ratio on the dissolution process were investigated. Experimental studies were carried out in the ranges of 25–75°C for reaction temperature, 0.25–1.00 mol/L for acid concentration, 0.00755–0.05020 cm for average particle size and 2.5 to 12.5 g of solid/100 mL of acid for solid-to-liquid ratio. It was determined that the dissolution process is controlled by resistance of the diffusion through the product layer. The activation energies of the process were determined to be 40.8 and 38.3 kJ/mol for hydrochloric and nitric acid, respectively. The apparent rate constants were expressed as a function of reaction temperature, acid concentration, particle radius and solid-to-liquid ratio: kαe−4910(1/T)Cr−0.6 (s/l)−1 and kαe−4606(1/T)Cr−0.5 (s/1)−1 for hydrochloric and nitric acid, respectively; k is the apparent rate constant in min−1; T, the reaction temperature (K); C, the acid concentration (mol/L); r, the initial particle radius (cm); s/l, the solid-to-liquid ratio (g of solid/100 mL of acid).

The aim of this work was to study the influence of tannate concentration (tannic acid/Al molar ratio [R] of 0.01–0.1), pH (5.0 and 8.0), order of aluminum, hydroxyl, and tannate addition, and prolonged ageing at different temperatures (10 months at 50°C and 5 y at room temperature and further ageing for 3–15 days at 140°C) on the nature and crystallinity of synthetic boehmite. Tannate facilitated the formation of boehmite relative to Al(OH)3 polymorphs when coprecipitated with Al and also when added to Al(OH)x phases already formed at pH 4.5 or 8.0. However, the organic ligand was more effective in preventing or perturbing the growth of the crystals of boehmite when coprecipitated with Al than when added to soluble Al(OH)x species or preformed Al precipitates. Boehmite aged at temperatures ⩽50°C typically showed a fibrous morphology. Crystals with a rhombic habit were observed in some treatments after ageing at 140°C. Significant amounts (15–30% C) of tannate were present in the precipitates after prolonged ageing. This tannate was only partly (<50%) oxidized by repeated treatments with H2O2. With further ageing at 140°C, the crystallite size of selected samples increased only slightly, suggesting that much of the remaining tannate was present in the internal structure of these samples and not simply adsorbed to their surfaces. Atomic force microscopy observation showed the presence of globular nanoparticles (probably Al tannate precipitates) attached to the elongated crystals of boehmite. Taken together, our results demonstrate that the crystalline phases that formed under mild conditions in the presence of low concentrations (R = 0.01) of foreign ligands have the same structure as boehmite, but with a poorly ordered and defective ion arrangement. At higher ligand concentrations (R ⩾0.05), mixtures of materials are formed having varying degrees of order, particle size and morphology.

The Al13 polycation is the predominant hydroxy-Al species in partially neutralized solutions. However, the existence of the Al13 species and the factors governing its formation in terrestrial environments still remain obscure. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of pyrogallol, a common polyphenol in soils, on the formation of Al13 tridecamer. Hydroxy-Al solutions with an OH/Al molar ratio of 2.2 (pH 4.53) at pyrogallol/Al molar ratios of 0, 0.01, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5 were prepared and mixed with 0.5 M sodium sulfate to form aluminum sulfate precipitation products. The solid-state 27Al nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of the precipitates show that the pyrogallol perturbed the formation of Al13 tridecamer species as indicated by the decrease in the intensity of resonance peak, observed at 62.5 ppm, with increase in the pyrogallol/Al molar ratio. The crystallization of the precipitated Al sulfates was also hampered by pyrogallol, resulting in the formation of X-ray non-crystalline products at a pyrogallol/Al molar ratio of 0.50. The absorbance at 465 and 650 nm of the hydroxy-Al-pyrogallol solutions, the C coprecipitated, the electron spin resonance and 13C CPMAS-NMR spectra of the precipitates indicate the concomitant enhanced abiotic humification of pyrogallol by the X-ray amorphous Al species.

The adsorption and photolysis of the herbicide bensulfuron-methyl [2-(4, 6-dimethoxypyrimidm-2-carbamoylsulfamoyl)-o-toluic acid methyl ester] on homoionic Na+-, Ca2+- and Fe3+-montmorillonite and kaolinite clays were studied. The Freundlich adsorption coefficient, Kf, measured from isotherms on clays followed the order Na+ < Ca2+ < Fe3+. Montmorillonite showed a greater adsorptive capacity than kaolinite. Analysis of Fourier transform infrared spectra of bensulfuron-methyl adsorbed on clay suggested probable bonding interactions between bensulfuron-methyl and homoionic clays. The photolysis rate of herbicide adsorbed on homoionic clay surfaces was quite slow to its free state and decreased in the order Na+ > Ca2+ > Fe3+, indicating that adsorption may have prevented photolysis.

Kaolins from an Al-rich clay deposit formed in volcanic tuff, southeastern Korea contain predominant dickite and quartz with accessory diaspore, pyrophyllite, alunite, illite, sulfides and calcite. Intergrowth of blocky crystals with thin ones within stacks suggests that blocky crystals gradually replaced thin ones within the same stacks. Numerous dickite plates with pseudo-hexagonal outline are placed in rows eventually forming a U-shaped stack and a vermiform stack. Individual crystals within the stack are of pseudo-hexagonal form and vermiform, accompanying slips across basal planes. The euhedral dickite with blocky habit has basal planes (001) and edge planes (110) perpendicular to each other, and it shows pseudo-hexagonal crystallites elongated in one direction. Fourier transform infrared spectra at OH-stretching and far-infrared regions show that the dickitic mass contains a small proportion of kaolinite or nacrite, indicating interstratification or at least mixtures of kaolin polytypes. The formation of mixtures of various polytypes that are of kaolinite-dickite, dickite and mixtures of dickite-nacrite could be attributed to hydrothermal processes ranging over a broad spectrum of temperature and fluid chemistry.

The crystallochemical features of Co in Co-substituted goethite solid-solutions prepared by two different procedures have been studied using infrared, X-ray photoelectron and electron energy loss spectroscopies. It was found that the path followed for the synthesis of Co-substituted goethite determines the oxidation state of Co in the goethite structure. Thus, in the solid-solution prepared by precipitation with Na2CO3 of an Fe(II) aqueous solution containing Co(II) cations, followed by the aerial oxidation of the precipitate, the Co cations were found to be divalent, whereas trivalent Co was incorporated into the goethite obtained by ageing a solution containing Fe(III) and Co(II) cations precipitated by the addition of KOH. This different behavior is explained by the higher pH of goethite formation in the latter case, which favors the oxidation of the Co(II) cations.

A collection of green earths belonging to traditional artists’ pigments was examined in terms of mineralogy and provenance. The studied specimens included both mineralogical reference compounds and selected commercially available artists’ pigments, and contained green micas (glauconite or celadonite), chlorite, or smectite as pigmenting agents. The samples were examined by X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis)-near-IR diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy and voltammetry of microparticles. Particular attention was paid to the Kadaň green earth, mined until the 20th century in the West Bohemia deposit. The Greene-Kelly charge-reduction test, detailed description of non-basal diffraction patterns and characteristic vibrations in the mid-IR spectra were used to classify the major pigmenting agent of the Kadaň green earth as ferruginous smectite with separately diffracting saponite-like clusters. The smectite contains ∼15% Fe, mainly in the trivalent form, a detectable fraction of Fe in tetrahedral sites, and it is accompanied by a significant amount of Ti-bearing relict minerals due to its volcanogenic origin. On the contrary, in green micas (glauconite and celadonite) the Ti content is much smaller. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy was found suitable for distinguishing Fe as a constituent of free Fe oxides from Fe in the clay structure. It was also found to be useful for discriminating between green micas and smectites.

Bulk mineralogical and chemical properties of a weathering profile derived from serpentinite were studied using classical pedological methods (Munsell soil colors, particle-size distribution, density, cation exchange capacity, exchangeable bases, among others) and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) results. Bulk clay fractions were characterized using X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, electron microprobe, Mössbauer and infrared spectroscopies. Bulk geochemical mass-balance calculated from ICP-AES results shows leaching of both Mg and Si which reflects the early weathering of serpentine minerals. As a consequence, newly formed clay minerals are enriched with the least mobile elements, i.e. Fe and Al, producing dioctahedral smectites. These dioctahedral smectites are complex, heterogeneous and consist mainly of two populations. One population is an Fe-rich montmorillonite with little or no tetrahedral charge and Fe3+ as the dominant octahedral cation whereas the second population exhibits tetrahedral charge. Both populations occur as interstratified layers in the lower horizon of the weathering profile but show increasing segregation into well-defined end-members towards the surface horizons. Considering total Al and Fe contents, these clays differentiate into two chemical composition domains, Fe-rich clays in the lower profile and Al-rich clays towards the surface horizons.
