The U.S. Department of Agriculture–Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) has been a leader in weed science research covering topics ranging from the development and use of integrated weed management (IWM) tactics to basic mechanistic studies, including biotic resistance of desirable plant communities and herbicide resistance. ARS weed scientists have worked in agricultural and natural ecosystems, including agronomic and horticultural crops, pastures, forests, wild lands, aquatic habitats, wetlands, and riparian areas. Through strong partnerships with academia, state agencies, private industry, and numerous federal programs, ARS weed scientists have made contributions to discoveries in the newest fields of robotics and genetics, as well as the traditional and fundamental subjects of weed–crop competition and physiology and integration of weed control tactics and practices. Weed science at ARS is often overshadowed by other research topics; thus, few are aware of the long history of ARS weed science and its important contributions. This review is the result of a symposium held at the Weed Science Society of America’s 62nd Annual Meeting in 2022 that included 10 separate presentations in a virtual Weed Science Webinar Series. The overarching themes of management tactics (IWM, biological control, and automation), basic mechanisms (competition, invasive plant genetics, and herbicide resistance), and ecosystem impacts (invasive plant spread, climate change, conservation, and restoration) represent core ARS weed science research that is dynamic and efficacious and has been a significant component of the agency’s national and international efforts. This review highlights current studies and future directions that exemplify the science and collaborative relationships both within and outside ARS. Given the constraints of weeds and invasive plants on all aspects of food, feed, and fiber systems, there is an acknowledged need to face new challenges, including agriculture and natural resources sustainability, economic resilience and reliability, and societal health and well-being.

Protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO)-inhibiting herbicides remain an important and useful chemistry 60 yr after their first introduction. In this review, based on topics introduced at the Weed Science Society of America 2021 symposium titled “A History, Overview, and Plan of Action on PPO Inhibiting Herbicides,” we discuss the current state of PPO-inhibiting herbicides. Renewed interest in the PPO-inhibiting herbicides in recent years, due to increased use and increased cases of resistance, has led to refinements in knowledge regarding the mechanism of action of PPO inhibitors. Herein we discuss the importance of the two isoforms of PPO in plants, compile a current knowledge of target-site resistance mechanisms, examine non–target site resistance cases, and review crop selectivity mechanisms. Consistent and reproducible greenhouse screening and target-site mutation assays are necessary to effectively study and compare PPO-inhibitor resistance cases. To this end, we cover best practices in screening to accurately identify resistance ratios and properly interpret common screens for point mutations. The future of effective and sustainable PPO-inhibitor use relies on development of new chemistries that maintain activity on resistant biotypes and the promotion of responsible stewardship of PPO inhibitors both new and old. We present the biorational design of the new PPO inhibitor trifludimoxazin to highlight the future of PPO-inhibitor development and discuss the elements of sustainable weed control programs using PPO inhibitors, as well as how responsible stewardship can be incentivized. The sustained use of PPO inhibitors in future agriculture relies on the effective and timely communication from mode of action and resistance research to agronomists, Extension workers, and farmers.

This article is a clinical guide which discusses the “state-of-the-art” usage of the classic monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) antidepressants (phenelzine, tranylcypromine, and isocarboxazid) in modern psychiatric practice. The guide is for all clinicians, including those who may not be experienced MAOI prescribers. It discusses indications, drug-drug interactions, side-effect management, and the safety of various augmentation strategies. There is a clear and broad consensus (more than 70 international expert endorsers), based on 6 decades of experience, for the recommendations herein exposited. They are based on empirical evidence and expert opinion—this guide is presented as a new specialist-consensus standard. The guide provides practical clinical advice, and is the basis for the rational use of these drugs, particularly because it improves and updates knowledge, and corrects the various misconceptions that have hitherto been prominent in the literature, partly due to insufficient knowledge of pharmacology. The guide suggests that MAOIs should always be considered in cases of treatment-resistant depression (including those melancholic in nature), and prior to electroconvulsive therapy—while taking into account of patient preference. In selected cases, they may be considered earlier in the treatment algorithm than has previously been customary, and should not be regarded as drugs of last resort; they may prove decisively effective when many other treatments have failed. The guide clarifies key points on the concomitant use of incorrectly proscribed drugs such as methylphenidate and some tricyclic antidepressants. It also illustrates the straightforward “bridging” methods that may be used to transition simply and safely from other antidepressants to MAOIs.

Summary
This essay will analyze the Jesus tradition in the Apostolic Fathers in light of recent debates on the relationship between orality and textuality in antiquity. Specifically, it will analyze the Jesus tradition in the Apostolic Fathers as oral tradition, given that it almost certainly derived from an oral-traditional source. This approach reflects a scholarly paradigm-shift that has been gaining momentum over the last three decades in studying the interplay of orality and textuality in early Christian circles. Prior to this paradigm-shift one could say with Werner H. Kelber that historical biblical scholarship was “empowered by an inadequate theory of the art of communication in the ancient world.” The paradigm-shift involves taking seriously that early Christianity arose and spread within societies that were predominantly oral. Not that attention to oral tradition is something new; New Testament scholars appealed to it for centuries, for example, in debating the sources and historical reliability of the canonical Gospels. Relatively recent, however, are the many insights into the inner workings of oral tradition in antiquity provided by a newer generation of scholars, many of whom built upon the pioneering work of Milman Parry and Albert Lord. These new insights are reshaping our understanding of the role of oral Jesus tradition in the early Christian community, and causing us to rethink the impact of orality and textuality upon early Christian writings and their sources.
Altered functional connectivity in the fear network of firefighters with repeated traumatic stress

Background
Firefighters are routinely exposed to various traumatic events and often experience a range of trauma-related symptoms. Although these repeated traumatic exposures rarely progress to the development of post-traumatic stress disorder, firefighters are still considered to be a vulnerable population with regard to trauma.
AimsTo investigate how the human brain responds to or compensates for the repeated experience of traumatic stress.
MethodWe included 98 healthy firefighters with repeated traumatic experiences but without any diagnosis of mental illness and 98 non-firefighter healthy individuals without any history of trauma. Functional connectivity within the fear circuitry, which consists of the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, insula, amygdala, hippocampus and ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), was examined using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Trauma-related symptoms were evaluated using the Impact of Event Scale – Revised.
ResultsThe firefighter group had greater functional connectivity between the insula and several regions of the fear circuitry including the bilateral amygdalae, bilateral hippocampi and vmPFC as compared with healthy individuals. In the firefighter group, stronger insula–amygdala connectivity was associated with greater severity of trauma-related symptoms (β = 0.36, P = 0.005), whereas higher insula–vmPFC connectivity was related to milder symptoms in response to repeated trauma (β = −0.28, P = 0.01).
ConclusionsThe current findings suggest an active involvement of insular functional connectivity in response to repeated traumatic stress. Functional connectivity of the insula in relation to the amygdala and vmPFC may be potential pathways that underlie the risk for and resilience to repeated traumatic stress, respectively.

This paper surveys the first stage in the development of models of endogenous growth over the two decades between 1952 and 1973, including seminal works by Arrow, Frankel, Phelps, Uzawa, and others as faculty and graduate students who interacted in the Stanford–Chicago–MIT–Yale Nexus. The paper also deals with American Economic Association (AEA) and Econometric Society (ES) conference sessions over the period 1964–1968 on growth, technical progress, and innovations and with the contributions in the 1967 Shell volume, in addition to dissertations, working papers, and book chapters by those involved in the “first wave” over the period 1965–1973. Finally, the paper considers the initial efforts at building more sophisticated models based on technical progress, human capital, increasing returns and imperfect competition, and the incompatibility between increasing returns with competitive equilibrium.
Interactions of Sethoxydim and Corn (Zea mays) Postemergence Broadleaf Herbicides on Three Annual Grasses

Greenhouse and laboratory studies were conducted to determine the effect of 22 postemergence corn broadleaf herbicide combinations on the efficacy of sethoxydim applied to giant foxtail, large crabgrass, and shattercane. Eighteen combinations caused a reduction in sethoxydim efficacy on at least one grass species. Dicamba, atrazine plus dicamba, atrazine plus bentazon, bromoxynil, primisulfuron, CGA-152005 plus primisulfuron, MON 12000, and flumetsulam plus clopyralid plus 2,4-D (NAF-73) were evaluated further on the efficacy and foliar absorption of sethoxydim applied to giant foxtail, large crabgrass, and shattercane. In timing studies, applying all herbicide combinations at 7 or 3 d before sethoxydim application eliminated significant antagonistic interactions. However, applying NAF-73, primisulfuron, or CGA-152005 plus primisulfuron 1 d prior resulted in a reduction in sethoxydim efficacy on at least one grass species. Dicamba, atrazine plus dicamba, and atrazine plus bentazon decreased 14C-sethoxydim absorption 9 to 63% across grass species. Replacing crop oil concentrate (COC) with DASH increased sethoxydim absorption when applied with these herbicides but not to the full extent of sethoxydim applied alone with DASH. Sethoxydim efficacy was retained or improved with DASH when applied with dicamba, atrazine plus dicamba, atrazine plus bentazon, or bromoxynil. When primisulfuron, CGA-152005 plus primisulfuron, MON 12000, or NAF-73 was applied with 14C-sethoxydim no effect on sethoxydim absorption was observed. DASH was less effective than COC at restoring sethoxydim efficacy when applied with these herbicides.
Control of Volunteer Sethoxydim-Resistant Corn (Zea mays) in Soybean (Glycine max)

Research was conducted in 1995 and 1996 to determine the potential for commonly used volunteer corn herbicides to control volunteer sethoxydim-resistant (SR) corn in soybean. Greenhouse studies showed that the SR corn hybrid tolerated 181 times more sethoxydim than the susceptible sister hybrid. SR corn also tolerated other acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACCase) inhibitors including fluazifop-P, quizalofop-P, and clethodim with 30 X, 27 X, and 7 × magnitudes of tolerance, respectively, compared with the susceptible hybrid. SR corn exhibited the least tolerance to clethodim, with a control rating of 50% (CR50) predicted at 28 g ai/ha. Field studies at Dekalb and Urbana, IL, showed that quizalofop-P, fluazifop-P, and fluazifop-P plus fenoxaprop at 62, 140, and 140 + 47 g ai/ha, respectively, controlled 22% or less of volunteer F2 SR corn at 30 days after treatment (DAT). Clethodim at 105, 140, and 210 g/ha consistently suppressed 23 to 70% of the volunteer SR corn. Dry weight reductions at 60 DAT showed the same general trend as the visual estimates of control. The field results confirmed the greenhouse data, which suggested SR corn had the least amount of cross-resistance to clethodim compared to other ACCase-inhibiting herbicides. In 1996, only AC 299,263 and imazethapyr plus imazaquin suppressed volunteer SR corn and prevented soybean yield loss at both locations. However, no system completely controlled volunteer SR corn.
Optimizing foliar activity of isoxaflutole on giant foxtail (Setaria faberi) with various adjuvants

Greenhouse, laboratory, and field studies were conducted to evaluate the potential of nonionic surfactant (NIS), crop oil concentrate (COC), methylated seed oil (MSO), and 28% urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) to enhance whole plant efficacy, absorption, and spray retention of foliar applications of isoxaflutole to giant foxtail. In greenhouse studies, isoxaflutole at 10 g ai ha−1 reduced giant foxtail growth 5%, whereas the addition of a spray adjuvant reduced giant foxtail growth at least 75%. The addition of UAN improved giant foxtail growth reduction when used in combination with isoxaflutole plus NIS. Isoxaflutole spray retention on the leaf surface was increased with an adjuvant and a further increase was observed with the addition of UAN. Isoxaflutole applied with NIS, COC, and MSO resulted in 42, 60, and 91% 14C absorption, respectively, compared to 21% absorption from isoxaflutole applied alone 24 h after treatment (HAT). Increased 14C absorption and entry into the cuticle when an adjuvant was utilized with isoxaflutole resulted in greater translocation of 14C from isoxaflutole out of the treated leaf. Significant basipetal movement from foliar applications of 14C-isoxaflutole suggests phloem mobility. In field studies, isoxaflutole applied with MSO provided greater giant foxtail growth reduction compared to isoxaflutole applied with NIS and in some cases COC. The addition of UAN to isoxaflutole did not increase whole plant efficacy in field studies. These studies indicate isoxaflutole has excellent potential to be used for control of existing giant foxtail present at the time of corn planting if an adequate adjuvant is utilized.
Preemergence Weed Control in Conventional-Till Corn (Zea mays) with RPA 201772

Field studies were conducted at Dekalb, Urbana, and Brownstown, IL, in 1996 and 1997 to evaluate corn (Zea mays) injury and weed control from preemergence applications of RPA 201772 alone and tank-mixed with metolachlor, atrazine, or both. No significant corn injury from RPA 201772 was observed at any time for all experiments. Giant foxtail (Setaria faberi) control at 60 days after treatment (DAT) was variable and ranged from 47 to 93% for RPA 201772 applied alone at 105 g ai/ ha. Giant foxtail control of at least 90% was observed by applying metolachlor at 1,120 g ai/ha with 105 g/ha RPA 201772. The addition of atrazine at either 1,120 or 1,680 g ai/ha improved control of giant foxtail compared with RPA 201772 applied alone at 105 g/ha in two of the six studies. RPA 201772 applied at 105 g/ha controlled at least 88% of velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti), Pennsylvania smartweed (Polygonum pensylvanicum), and smooth pigweed (Amaranthus hybridus). RPA 201772 controlled 88% or less of common waterhemp (Amaranthus rudis), common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia), and common cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium). Control of these three species was 92% or greater with RPA 201772 plus atrazine. Control of common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album) was at least 96% with RPA 201772 applied alone at any rate in four of the six studies. However, common lambsquarters control was 68 and 77% for RPA 201772 applied alone at 105 g/ha at Urbana and Brownstown in 1997, respectively, where high common lambsquarters densities were prevalent. Under these conditions, the addition of atrazine to RPA 201772 at 105 g/ha improved control of common lambsquarters. RPA 201772 has excellent potential to provide consistent control of velvetleaf compared with atrazine. In contrast, these studies indicate RPA 201772 may provide inconsistent control of certain weed species in different environments. In order to achieve consistent control of a broad spectrum of weed species, RPA 201772 must be combined with other herbicides.
Giant foxtail (Setaria faberi) control in sethoxydim-resistant corn (Zea mays)

Field studies were conducted at Dekalb and Urbana, IL, in 1995 and 1996 to evaluate the effectiveness of sethoxydim for giant foxtail control in sethoxydim-resistant (SR) corn. Experiments studied sequential and total postemergence applications of grass herbicide standards compared to sethoxydim. Additional studies evaluated the compatibility of sethoxydim with postemergence broadleaf herbicides. Metolachlor plus atrazine and metolachlor followed by dicamba plus atrazine gave at least 88% control of giant foxtail at both locations in both years. Metolachlor plus flumetsulam plus clopyralid provided 90% or greater grass control over all experiments, with the exception of only 75% control at Dekalb in 1995 due to a heavy giant foxtail infestation. In comparison, flumetsulam plus clopyralid followed by postemergence applications of sethoxydim or nicosulfuron provided the same level of grass control as preemergence metolachlor, except at Dekalb in 1995 where control was 72% for both sethoxydim and nicosulfuron. Sequential applications of sethoxydim increased control of giant foxtail compared to a single sethoxydim application in 1995. Sethoxydim applied alone controlled giant foxtail 8% better than nicosulfuron at Urbana in 1996. Postemergence sethoxydim applied alone provided 87% or better control of giant foxtail. Sethoxydim performance was consistent when applied with flumetsulam plus clopyralid plus 2,4-D (NAF-73), halosulfuron plus dicamba, and bromoxynil. The efficacy of sethoxydim was reduced in combination with dicamba plus atrazine in three of the four trials, and bentazon plus atrazine as well as primisulfuron plus prosulfuron in all trials. Sethoxydim outperformed nicosulfuron in combinations with bromoxynil at Urbana. These studies indicate sethoxydim has excellent potential to be used in corn for postemergence control of giant foxtail.
Guidelines for the recognition and management of mixed depression

A significant minority of people presenting with a major depressive episode (MDE) experience co-occurring subsyndromal hypo/manic symptoms. As this presentation may have important prognostic and treatment implications, the DSM–5 codified a new nosological entity, the “mixed features specifier,” referring to individuals meeting threshold criteria for an MDE and subthreshold symptoms of (hypo)mania or to individuals with syndromal mania and subthreshold depressive symptoms. The mixed features specifier adds to a growing list of monikers that have been put forward to describe phenotypes characterized by the admixture of depressive and hypomanic symptoms (e.g., mixed depression, depression with mixed features, or depressive mixed states [DMX]). Current treatment guidelines, regulatory approvals, as well the current evidentiary base provide insufficient decision support to practitioners who provide care to individuals presenting with an MDE with mixed features. In addition, all existing psychotropic agents evaluated in mixed patients have largely been confined to patient populations meeting the DSM–IV definition of “mixed states” wherein the co-occurrence of threshold-level mania and threshold-level MDE was required. Toward the aim of assisting clinicians providing care to adults with MDE and mixed features, we have assembled a panel of experts on mood disorders to develop these guidelines on the recognition and treatment of mixed depression, based on the few studies that have focused specifically on DMX as well as decades of cumulated clinical experience.
Weed Management in Narrow- and Wide-Row Glyphosate-Resistant Soybean (Glycine max)

Field experiments were conducted over 3 yr at three locations in Illinois to evaluate the efficacy of glyphosate in glyphosate-resistant soybean planted in rows spaced 19, 38, and 76 cm. Minimal soybean injury (less than 10%) was observed from any glyphosate treatment. Glyphosate treatments controlled 82 to 99% of giant foxtail. Common waterhemp control was increased as soybean row spacing was decreased. Applying sequential glyphosate applications or increasing the glyphosate rate from 420 g ae/ha to 840 g/ha frequently increased common waterhemp control in 76-cm rows. Velvetleaf control with glyphosate was variable, ranging from 48 to 99%. Decreasing soybean row spacing, utilizing sequential glyphosate applications, or increasing the glyphosate rate improved velvetleaf control in at least four of eight site-years. Glyphosate treatments generally resulted in weed control and soybean yield equal to or greater than the standard herbicide treatments. However, glyphosate treatments yielded less than the hand-weeded control in four of eight site-years, suggesting that weed control from glyphosate treatments was sometimes inadequate.

Translocation and metabolism of radiolabeled RPA 201772 was studied in Setaria faberi. Tissue-killing heat girdles were used to determine the extent of RPA 201772 transport in the apoplast and symplast. In leaf uptake studies, girdling was performed above and below the treated area on the leaf. In root uptake studies, girdling was performed on the stem just above the crown. Girdling restricted translocation of 14C following both the root and leaf applications. However, translocation occurred past the girdles suggesting that both the symplast and apoplast are involved in translocation of 14C from RPA 201772. Translocation of 14C out of the treated leaf was reduced 85% with a girdle below the 14C spotting area. In root metabolism studies, 27, 40, and 33% of recovered 14C were identified as parent RPA 201772, diketonitrile, and other metabolites, respectively, 24 h after treatment (HAT). Conversion from parent RPA 201772 to diketonitrile was more extensive in leaf tissue than in roots with 10, 68, and 22% of recovered 14C identified as parent RPA 201772, diketonitrile, and other metabolites, respectively, in the treated area of the leaf 24 HAT. Metabolite analysis demonstrated RPA 201772 is mobile in both the apoplast and symplast.
Glyphosate translocation in common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album) and velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti) in response to ammonium sulfate

Greenhouse studies were conducted to determine the response of common lambsquarters and velvetleaf to glyphosate applied alone or with 20 g L−1 of ammonium sulfate (AMS). Minimal response of common lambsquarters to glyphosate plus AMS was observed. The GR50 values for velvetleaf decreased dramatically from 451 to 92 g ha−1 for glyphosate applied alone and glyphosate plus AMS, respectively. The addition of AMS did not affect foliar absorption of 14C-glyphosate in common lambsquarters but increased absorption in velvetleaf. A twofold increase in translocation, as a percentage of total 14C-glyphosate absorbed, occurred in velvetleaf with the addition of AMS. Increased control of velvetleaf with glyphosate plus AMS may be partially explained by greater glyphosate absorption and translocation. Increased translocation of glyphosate applied with AMS in velvetleaf was an indirect effect of greater foliar uptake as well as greater partitioning of glyphosate out of the treated leaf.

A 2010 survey of 1,299 corn, cotton, and soybean growers was conducted to determine their attitudes and awareness regarding glyphosate-resistant (GR) weeds and resultant implications on weed management practices. An additional 350 growers included in the current study participated in a 2005 survey, and these answers were compared across time so that cross-sectional and longitudinal comparisons of responses could be made. Most growers surveyed in 2010 were aware of the potential for weeds to evolve resistance to glyphosate; however, many growers were not aware of glyphosate resistance in specific weeds in their county or state. Growers in the South were different from growers in other geographic regions and were significantly more aware of local cases of GR weeds. Awareness of GR weeds did not increase appreciably from 2005 to 2010, but the percentage who reported GR weeds as problematic was significantly higher. Grower reports of GR weeds on-farm in 2010 were up considerably from 2005, with growers in the South reporting significantly more instances than growers in other regions. Growers in the South were also more likely to consider glyphosate resistance a serious problem. Overall, 30% of growers did not consider GR weeds to be a problem. It appears that most growers received information about glyphosate resistance from farm publications, although in the South this percentage was less than for other geographic regions. Growers in the South received more information from universities and extension sources.

Approximately 1,300 growers from 22 states were surveyed during 2010 to determine herbicide use. Cropping systems included continuous glyphosate-resistant corn, cotton, and soybean, and various combinations of these crops and rotations with non–glyphosate-resistant crops. The most commonly used herbicide for both fall and spring applications was glyphosate followed by synthetic auxin herbicides. Herbicide application in spring was favored over application in the fall. The percentage of growers in a glyphosate-only system was as high as 69% for some cropping systems. Excluding glyphosate, the most frequently used herbicides included photosystem II, mitotic, and protoporphyrinogen oxidase inhibitors. A higher percentage of growers integrated herbicides other than glyphosate during 2010 compared with 2005. Extensive educational efforts have promoted resistance management by increasing the diversity of herbicides in glyphosate-resistant cropping systems. However, a considerable percentage of growers continued use of only glyphosate from the period of 2005 to 2010, and this practice most likely will continue to exert a high level of selection for evolved glyphosate-resistant weed species.
