In order to recognize the best nutrient supply options for profitable and sustainable production systems, observations were recorded from 2001 to 2020 (20 years) in a long-term fertilizer experiment initiated in 1995–96 with soybean–wheat cropping systems (SWCSs) under irrigated conditions. The experiment comprised of seven treatments including control, organic, inorganic and their combinations. A combined use of 10 Mg farmyard manure (FYM)/ha (M) along with 120 kg N/ha provided statistically (P < 0.05) similar yield and economic benefits to the M + NPK and also provided a positive yield trend (30.0 and 16.2 kg/ha/year) and net return (14.7 and 5.81 US$/ha/year) over the year in both wheat and soybean, respectively. The combined use of organic and chemical fertilizers, provided 32–41% higher production efficiency than their individual use. In contrast, long-term chemical fertilization provided a negative yield trend in both the crops with the highest reduction in sole N-fertilized plots ranged from −39 to −42 kg/ha/year. Water-use efficiency ranged from 3.20 to 12.3 kg/ha/mm in soybean–wheat rotation and increased almost 1.74–3.15 times in wheat and 1.30–1.80 times in soybean due to fertilizer application. A similar trend was observed for water-expense efficiency and remain closely associated with fertilization practice. Long-term chemical fertilizers declined the yield potential of the studied crops while their conjoint application with FYM in the winter season considered as an input efficient approach to sustain the overall productivity and profitability of SWCSs.

Mental health apps (MHAs) are increasingly popular in India due to rising mental health awareness and app accessibility. Despite their benefits, like mood tracking, sleep tools and virtual therapy, MHAs lack regulatory oversight. India's framework, including the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) and Medical Device Rules 2017, does not cover standalone health apps, raising concerns about data privacy and accuracy. Establishing a centralised regulatory body with guidelines for MHAs is essential for user safety and efficacy. This paper examines the current regulatory landscape, compares international approaches and proposes a tiered regulatory framework to foster responsible innovation while safeguarding user interests in digital mental health services.

This review aims to assess the prevalence of malaria in pregnancy during antenatal visits and delivery, species-specific burden together with regional variation in the burden of disease. It also aims to estimate the proportions of adverse pregnancy outcomes in malaria-positive women. Based on the PRISMA guidelines, a thorough and systematic search was conducted in July 2023 across two electronic databases (including PubMed and CENTRAL). Forest plots were constructed for each outcome of interest highlighting the effect measure, confidence interval, sample size, and its associated weightage. All the statistical meta-analysis were conducted using R-Studio version 2022.07. Sensitivity analyses, publication bias assessment, and meta-regression analyses were also performed to ensure robustness of the review. According to the pooled estimates of 253 studies, the overall prevalence of malaria was 18.95% (95% CI: 16.95–21.11), during antenatal visits was 20.09% (95% CI: 17.43–23.06), and at delivery was 17.32% (95% CI: 14.47–20.61). The highest proportion of malarial infection was observed in Africa approximating 21.50% (95% CI: 18.52–24.81) during ANC and 20.41% (95% CI: 17.04–24.24) at the time of delivery. Our analysis also revealed that the odds of having anaemia were 2.40 times (95% CI: 1.87–3.06), having low birthweight were 1.99 times (95% CI: 1.60–2.48), having preterm birth were 1.65 times (95% CI: 1.29–2.10), and having stillbirths were 1.40 times (95% CI: 1.15–1.71) in pregnant women with malaria.

As the proportion of women being victims of spousal violence in India is higher than men, laws are usually framed to safeguard women. However, men who have experienced physical spousal violence are not unheard of. The study aims to provide the nationwide prevalence of physical violence against husbands and the risk factors for such violence, using large-scale nationally representative ‘National Family Health Survey’ (NFHS 4) data. The study used descriptive, bivariate, logistic, and multilevel regression models with a random intercept clustering within states and households to explain the physical violence against husband. Sample size for the analysis was 62,716 currently married women aged 15–49 years. Findings revealed that in most of the states of India, physical spousal violence has increased over time. Behavioural characteristics like marital control, alcoholism, and childhood experience of parental violence have a consistent and strong role in explaining the experience of physical violence across states. With age, experience of violence against husbands increases. Differences in socio-economic characteristics do not have unidirectional effect on violence experienced by husbands across regions of India. Working women who are earning cash and having access to mobile phones perpetrate more physical violence in selected regions. Education shows a gradient on such violence perpetration, indicating that only after achieving a certain level of education, chances of violence reduce. Regionally contrasting social and economic risk factors in explaining violence strengthen the argument that violence is space and culture-specific, and development alone may not resolve violence unless the system is addressing the behavioural aspects. There is a need for supporting men experiencing domestic violence within the existing system facilities. Revisiting the present domestic violence laws and programmes for inclusivity is the need of the hour.

Pollen grains represent the male gametes of seed plants and their viability is critical for sexual reproduction in the plant life cycle. Palynology and viability studies have traditionally been used to address a range of botanical, ecological and geological questions, but recent work has revealed the importance of pollen viability in invasion biology as well. Here, we report an efficient visual method for assessing the viability of pollen using digital holographic microscopy (DHM). Imaging data reveal that quantitative phase information provided by the technique can be correlated with viability as indicated by the outcome of the colorimetric test. We successfully test this method on pollen grains of Lantana camara, a well-known alien invasive plant in the tropical world. Our results show that pollen viability may be assessed accurately without the usual staining procedure and suggest potential applications of the DHM methodology to a number of emerging areas in plant science.

Among the vast swathes of Gondwanan sedimentary rocks in India, exposures of the Lower Permian Talchir Formation at Manendragarh in India are exceptional for their cold marine faunal assemblage and muddy conglomerates of possible glacial origin. They may represent a record of the late Palaeozoic glaciation that affected Gondwana in the Permo-Carboniferous. Although the fossil record is relatively well documented, the sedimentology of this area is not well understood. This paper intends to fill the gap in knowledge regarding palaeogeography and the palaeoenvironmental changes within the basin through space and time. We distinguish conglomerates that are formed by glacial and mass flow processes. The lateral variation in facies associations along a NNE-SSW transect in the study area identifies the depositional basin as an interior sea that formed when the sea spilled over a steep basement ridge during a transgression. The benthic organisms remained confined to the seaward basin margin where they only flourished in the initial stage of basin filling. Locally derived, bioclastic storm beds are limited to the seaward flank of the basin. Alternating phases of glaciation and interglaciation resulted in an interbedded succession of grey shales and interglacial density flow deposits. The channels that fed these density flows are preserved closest to the landward margin of the basin. Co-existence of glacial diamictites and interglacial density flow deposits highlights the climatic changes in this part of Gondwana during the Late Palaeozoic.

Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is one of the most prevalent cardiac diseases in the world. How might we design patient journeys improving quality of life using wearable cardiac devices for continuous out of hospital monitoring and support? Most of the studies to date have emphasised the technical aspects of implementing such devices with less focus on human factors. As such, remote cardiac monitoring appears to be burdened by poor patient adherence. This research study proposed a journey map based on Roger's technology adoption model to understand the challenges faced by AF patients and non/asymptomatic patients in using wearable devices to monitor their health. Data from semi-structured interviews conducted in Denmark with 12 participants aged 24 to 65 years was used. Interview results show that citizens prefer tracking heart activity only in conjunction with other measures such as steps or sleep and do not feel motivated to track their heart activity on a daily basis. Patients view wearables as a valuable tool to check if their health is all right, although apprehension that devices can cause unnecessary worry can lead to their rejection. Finally, recommendations for the design of patient journeys when using wearables were made.

Solving the Arithmetic Word Problems (AWPs) using AI techniques has attracted much attention in recent years. We feel that the current AWP solvers are under-utilizing the relevant domain knowledge. We present a knowledge- and learning-based system that effectively solves AWPs of a specific type—those that involve transfer of objects from one agent to another (Transfer Cases (TC)). We represent the knowledge relevant to these problems as TC Ontology. The sentences in TC-AWPs contain information of essentially four types: before-transfer, transfer, after-transfer, and query. Our system (KLAUS-Tr) uses statistical classifier to recognize the types of sentences. The sentence types guide the information extraction process used to identify the agents, quantities, units, types of objects, and the direction of transfer from the AWP text. The extracted information is represented as an RDF graph that utilizes the TC Ontology terminology. To solve the given AWP, we utilize semantic web rule language (SWRL) rules that capture the knowledge about how object transfer affects the RDF graph of the AWP. Using the TC ontology, we also analyze if the given problem is consistent or otherwise. The different ways in which TC-AWPs can be inconsistent are encoded as SWRL rules. Thus, KLAUS-Tr can identify if the given AWP is invalid and accordingly notify the user. Since the existing datasets do not have inconsistent AWPs, we create AWPs of this type and augment the datasets. We have implemented KLAUS-Tr and tested it on TC-type AWPs drawn from the All-Arith and other datasets. We find that TC-AWPs constitute about 40% of the AWPs in a typical dataset like All-Arith. Our system achieves an impressive accuracy of 92%, thus improving the state-of-the-art significantly. We plan to extend the system to handle AWPs that contain multiple transfers of objects and also offer explanations of the solutions.

This study investigates a low-profile circularly polarized (CP) antenna using coplanar waveguide feeding. Rectangular-shaped slots and an inverted L-shaped slit are entrenched into the ground plane to enhance the impedance bandwidth of the antenna. Furthermore, the antenna is implemented with six elliptical electromagnetic band gap structures on its substrate to enhance the −10 dB return loss bandwidth and also to generate CP waves. The experimental and theoretical results closely match each other and indicate that a simple and compact design antenna with dimensions of 0.317λ0 × 0.317λ0 × 0.023λ0(λ0 is the operating wavelength at 4.74 GHz in free space) achieves 36.9% (3.91–5.68 GHz) of the −10 dB return loss bandwidth and 9.98% (4.09–4.52 GHz) of the 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth, thus making it a favorable entrant for radio altimeter and wireless avionics infra-communication systems.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) emerged from a city in China and has now spread as a global pandemic affecting millions of individuals. The causative agent, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is being extensively studied in terms of its genetic epidemiology using genomic approaches. Andhra Pradesh is one of the major states of India with the third-largest number of COVID-19 cases with a limited understanding of its genetic epidemiology. In this study, we have sequenced 293 SARS-CoV-2 genome isolates from Andhra Pradesh with a mean coverage of 13324X. We identified 564 high-quality SARS-CoV-2 variants. A total of 18 variants mapped to reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction primer/probe sites, and four variants are known to be associated with an increase in infectivity. Phylogenetic analysis of the genomes revealed the circulating SARS-CoV-2 in Andhra Pradesh majorly clustered under the clade A2a (20A, 20B and 20C) (94%), whereas 6% fall under the I/A3i clade, a clade previously defined to be present in large numbers in India. To the best of our knowledge, this is the most comprehensive genetic epidemiological analysis performed for the state of Andhra Pradesh.

The pandemic of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is rapidly progressing, causing significant morbidity and mortality. Various antiviral drugs, anti-inflammatory drugs and immunomodulators have been tried without substantial clinical benefits. The severe and critical cases of COVID-19 disease are characterised by gut microbiome dysbiosis, immune dysregulation, hyper-inflammation and hypercytokinaemia (cytokine storm). Therefore, the strategies which target these pathophysiological processes may be beneficial. Probiotics are one such strategy that exerts beneficial effects by manipulation of the gut microbiota, suppression of opportunistic pathogens in the gut, decreasing translocation of opportunistic organisms, activation of mucosal immunity and modulation of the innate and adaptive immune response. Probiotics are the potential candidates to be tested in moderate and severe cases of COVID-19 due to several beneficial effects, including easy availability, easy to administer, safe and economical to use.
