Intermittent swimming behaviour is commonly observed in larval zebrafish, often attributed to energy-saving mechanisms. In this study, we utilize a hybrid approach combining deep reinforcement learning and the immersed boundary–lattice Boltzmann method to train a larval zebrafish-like swimmer to reach a target with minimized energy expenditure. We find that when the tail-beat period is fixed, continuous swimming emerges as the optimal strategy. However, when the tail-beat period is allowed to vary, intermittent swimming proves superior in energy performance, achieved through reductions in tail-beat amplitude and frequency. Our detailed analysis reveals that intermittent swimmers employ rapid backward tail flicks to attain high speeds, coupled with slower forward tail flicks and coasting phases to conserve energy. Furthermore, we derive scaling laws governing the swimming performance of trained fish. These results offer valuable insights into the intermittent swimming patterns of fish, with implications for understanding bio-inspired locomotion and informing the design of energy-efficient aquatic systems.

The effects of resistant starch on glycaemic control are controversial. In this study, a systematic review and meta-analysis of results from nineteen randomised controlled trials (RCT) was performed to illustrate the effects of resistant starch on glycaemic control. A literature search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane electronic databases for related publications from inception to 6 April 2020. Key inclusion criteria were: RCT; resistant starch as intervention substances and reporting glucose- and insulin-related endpoints. Exclusion criteria were: using type I resistant starch or a mixture of resistant starch and other functional food ingredients as intervention; using substances other than digestible starch as controls. The effect of resistant starch on fasting plasma glucose was significant (effect size (ES) –0·09 (95 % CI –0·13, −0·04) mmol/l, P = 0·001) compared with digestible starch. Subgroup analyses revealed that the ES was larger when the dosage of resistant starch was more than 28 g/d (ES –0·16 (95 % CI –0·24, –0·08) mmol/l, P < 0·001) or the intervention period was more than 8 weeks (ES –0·12 (95 % CI –0·18, –0·06) mmol/l, P < 0·001). The effect on homoeostatic model assessment (HOMA)-insulin resistance (IR) was significant (ES –0·33 (95 % CI –0·51, –0·14), P = 0·001). However, the effects on other insulin-related endpoints were not significant, including fasting plasma insulin, four endpoints from the frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance test (insulin sensitivity index, acute insulin response, disposition index and glucose effectiveness) and HOMA-β. The current study indicated moderate effects of resistant starch on improving glycaemic control.

A fully discrete A-ϕ finite element scheme for a nonlinear model of type-II superconductors is proposed and analyzed. The nonlinearity is due to a field dependent conductivity with the regularized power-law form. The challenge of this model is the error estimate for the nonlinear term under the time derivative. Applying the backward Euler method in time discretisation, the well-posedness of the approximation problem is given based on the theory of monotone operators. The fully discrete system is derived by standard finite element method. The error estimate is suboptimal in time and space.

Phase stability, elastic, and thermodynamic properties of (Co,Ni)3(Al,Mo,Nb) with the L12 structure have been investigated by first-principles calculations. Calculated phonon density of states show that (Co,Ni)3(Al,Mo,Nb) is dynamically stable, and calculated elastic constants indicate that (Co,Ni)3(Al,Mo,Nb) possesses intrinsic ductility. Young’s and shear moduli of the simulated polycrystalline (Co,Ni)3(Al,Mo,Nb) phase are calculated using the Voigt–Reuss–Hill approach and are found to be smaller than those of Co3(Al,W). Calculated electronic density of states depicts covalent-like bonding existing in (Co,Ni)3(Al,Mo,Nb). Temperature-dependent thermodynamic properties of (Co,Ni)3(Al,Mo,Nb) can be described satisfactorily using the Debye–Grüneisen approach, including heat capacity, entropy, enthalpy, and linear thermal expansion coefficient. Predicted heat capacity, entropy, and linear thermal expansion coefficient of (Co,Ni)3(Al,Mo,Nb) show significant change as a function of temperature. Furthermore the obtained data can be used in the modeling of thermodynamic and mechanical properties of Co-based alloys to enable the design of high temperature alloys.

In this paper we present a fully discrete A-ø finite element method to solve Maxwell’s equations with a nonlinear degenerate boundary condition, which represents a generalization of the classical Silver-Müller condition for a non-perfect conductor. The relationship between the normal components of the electric field E and the magnetic field H obeys a power-law nonlinearity of the type H x n = n x (|E x n|α-1E x n) with α ∈ (0,1]. We prove the existence and uniqueness of the solutions of the proposed A-ø scheme and derive the error estimates. Finally, we present some numerical experiments to verify the theoretical result.

To better understand the mechanisms of creation and rupture of conductive filaments in resistive switching devices such as Cu/TaOx/Pt, with Cu and Pt being the active and inert electrodes, respectively, a device with limited supply of active metal electrode has been manufactured and electrically characterized. The limited supply of active metal has been realized by depositing a thin (delta) Cu layer (δ-Cu), 6 nm and 12 nm thick, on TaOx, resulting in a Pt/δ-Cu/TaOx/Pt device structure. The limited active metal supply i) has a direct impact on the onresistance (Ron) of the Cu bridge, and leads, after several conventional set-reset cycles, to ii) pulsating behavior, when device turns on and off repeatedly, to iii) symmetric switching behavior with respect to applied voltage polarity, when the device can be set and reset both at positive and negative bias, and to iv) volatile switching behavior.

A phenomenological model has been proposed for the radial growth of the copper or silver nanobridge in the conductive bridge random access memory devices. In this model, the growth rate of the bridge is proportional to the local ion flux based on the hopping mechanism. Due to the differences of the local electric field, the growth rate is different along a conical shape nanobridge. The model accounts for the growth rate difference by introducing a geometrical form factor. Based on the model, the top and bottom radii are predicted for truncated conical copper nanobridge. The model is validated with data obtained on Cu/TaOx/Pt resistive devices.

Resistive switches are being explored as a candidate for ultra-dense memory as well as logic circuits. The advantages of the resistive switches include high switching speed and excellent scaling potential. Here, we report for the first time the switching behavior of anti-parallel connected resistive switches (APS), which is a composite device exhibiting bi-directional switching properties. Under the opposite voltage biases, the two anti-parallel cells are alternatively set and reset, rendering the APS switched in both directions. For appropriate ON resistance values and set and reset voltages the two anti-parallel switches can be both set in conductive states. An APS device can be realized in a single switch by two coexisting Cu and oxygen vacancy nanofilaments which are formed and ruptured under opposite voltage polarities. The described APS behavior is of interest to logic applications and in neural networks.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a unique group of materials with high aspect ratio, mechanical and electrical properties, which are of great interests in the field of interconnects, and radio frequency applications. In order to incorporate CNTs into any of these applications successfully, one important issue that has to be resolved is the critical parameters (temperature and reactant gases) associated with the growth of the CNTs. As such, the effect of these growth requirements on the adjacent components should be studied. In this work, we examined specifically the effect of carbon nanotubes growth on the underlying metallization, in particular gold, dedicated for radio-frequency-based applications. The gold coplanar lines were annealed at 800°C in a plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) system to simulate the worst-case condition. The reflection and transmission parameters were analyzed using a probe station connected to a vector network analyzer. Carbon nanotubes grown on different barrier layers were also characterized using a scanning electron microscope and Raman spectroscopy to identify a suitable barrier layer for gold. Our results showed that it is promising to integrate carbon nanotubes grown using PECVD onto Au coplanar waveguide without degrading the S-parameters measurements up to 20 GHz.

This paper reexamines, at a range of investment horizons, the asymmetric dependence between hedge fund returns and market returns. Given the current availability of hedge fund data, the joint distribution of longer-horizon returns is extracted from the dynamics of monthly returns using the filtered historical simulation; we then apply the method based on copula theory to uncover the dependence structure therein. While the direction of asymmetry remains unchanged, the magnitude of asymmetry is attenuated considerably as the investment horizon increases. Similar horizon effects also occur on the tail dependence. Our findings suggest that nonlinearity in hedge fund exposure to market risk is more short term in nature, and that hedge funds provide higher benefits of diversification, the longer the horizon.

Quantum dot infrared photodetectors (QDIPs) have been studied widely for normal-incidence infrared detection. The 3D confinement provided by quantum dots allows for the elimination of gratings that are typically required for normal-incidence detection in quantum well infrared photodetectors (QWIPs). Furthermore, the growth of Ge dots on Si substrates offers the potential for integration with existing CMOS platforms. To date, however, Ge QDIPs have typically been grown epitaxially by Stranski-Krastonov growth – producing pancake-like dots with base dimensions of 50-100 nm, heights of 7-10 nm, and an aerial dot density of 109–1010 cm−2. Such dots have poor lateral confinement, causing them to have non-ideal normal-incidence absorption characteristics, similar to quantum wells. In this work, we demonstrate infrared absorption in Ge dots with base dimensions of approximately 15 nm. These dots are epitaxially grown on pre-patterned Si substrates, with an aerial dot density of approximately 1011 cm−2. The substrates are prepared by using diblock copolymers to create a nano-pattern on the substrate surface which is transferred to the substrate by dry etching. The size of this pattern determines the base dimensions of the Ge dots. After growth, these dots are then tested for their infrared absorption properties using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy. The normal-incidence absorption of the dots can be studied with FTIR by varying the polarization angle of the infrared light. We present FTIR absorption spectra for samples grown with various conditions (e.g., different dot doping levels, numbers of layers, and dot base dimensions) and investigate the effects of different growth conditions on infrared absorption properties. We also report on the normal-incidence absorption characteristics of these dots by presenting absorption spectra for various polarization angles of infrared light.

The purpose of the present study was to characterize the Ca2+ channels in smooth muscle cells from human stomach and to examine the effects of osmotic swelling on the channel activity. Ca2+ channel current with either Ca2+ or Ba2+ as charge carrier was recorded from freshly isolated smooth muscle cells using the conventional whole-cell patch clamp technique. The degree of cell swelling as a result of hypotonic challenge was monitored using a video image analysis system. The changes in intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) were measured by microfluorimetry. The pharmacological and voltage activation profile suggests a typical dihydropyridine-sensitive L-type Ca2+ current. Cell swelling, induced by hypotonic challenge, enhanced the amplitude of currents through L-type Ca2+ channels without significant effects on steady-state voltage dependency. After treatment with the L-type Ca2+ channel agonist Bay K 8644 (0.1-2 µM), no further significant increase in calcium channel current or corresponding [Ca2+]i transients were provoked by the swelling. The above results demonstrated that the presence of L-type Ca2+ current in smooth muscle cells of the human stomach and the augmentation of the current are closely associated with the volume increase resulting from hypotonic swelling. To study the effect of Al on superplasticity of ultra-high carbon steel (UHCS), 3–5%Al was added to the UHCS, and superplastic behavior was measured at 700–800°C. To produce the fine and superplastic microstructure, an isothermal rolling at 700°C was used, and the grain size of ferrite was less than about 2μm in diameter after the process.

Significant improvement in superplasticity was observed; the strain-rate sensitivity was high upto a strain-rate of 10−2 s−1, and 402% elongation was measured at 750°C and at an engineering strain-rate of 5000%/min(i.e., 8.3×10−2s−1). It has been determined that the Al-addition leads to a finer grain size, which, in turn, improved the superplastic properties of the ultra-high carbon steels.
