Pathological alterations of the tail tip are a severe problem for fattening cattle husbandry with respect to animal welfare and economic losses. We compared the frequencies of tail tip lesions and less severe skin damage in bulls on farms with slatted-floor pens (slat, n = 10), slatted floor pens with prophylactic tail docking (slat/dock, n = 9), and deep bedding pens (straw, n = 10). In addition, the subjects’ weight, their space allotment and the season of the year were determined to test whether they were related to the frequency of tail tip lesions and skin damage. Results are based on 8782 tail inspections in 764 pens. The frequency of the more severe tail tip lesions was highest in slat farms, less high in slat/dock farms, and lowest in straw farms. However, the incidence of the less severe skin damage was highest in slat farms, less high in straw farms, and lowest in slat/dock farms. The frequency of tail tip lesions increased with the weight of bulls in slat and slat/dock farms, but not in straw farms. In addition, in slat and slat/dock farms the incidence of tail tip lesions increased with a decreasing space allotment. The frequency of skin damage increased with increasing weight of bulls in each housing condition. The effect of weight on the number of tail tip lesions and skin damage was stronger in autumn, ie the period following the warm season, compared to spring. Our results suggest that a soft floor and an enlarged space allotment are the most suitable means of preventing tail tip lesions in fattening bulls. Prophylactic tail docking can reduce the occurrence of tail tip lesions only to a lesser degree and may impair the animals’ welfare.

The European Programme for Ice Coring in Antarctica includes a comprehensive pre-site survey on the inland ice plateau of Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. The German glaciological programme during the 1997/98 field season was carried out along a 1200 km traverse on Amundsenisen and involved sampling the snow cover in pits and by shallow firn cores. This paper focuses on the accumulation studies. The cores were dated by dielectric-profiling and continuous-flow analysis. Distinct volcanogenic peaks and seasonal signals in the profiles served to establish a depth time-scale. The eruptions of Krakatoa, Tambora, an unknown volcano, Kuwae and El Chichon are well-documented in the ice. Variations of the accumulation rates over different times were inferred from the depth time-scales. A composite record of accumulation rates for the last 200 years was produced by stacking 12 annually resolved records. According to this, accumulation rates decreased in the 19th century and increased in the 20th century. The recent values are by no means extraordinary, as they do not exceed the values at the beginning of the 19th century. Variations in accumulation rates are most probably linked to temperature variations indicated in δ18O records from Amundsenisen.

Evidence from aerial photographs, maps, and field checks indicates that 319 glaciers lie in cirques of the Rocky Mountains, south of the United States-Canadian border. On a subcontinental scale, the distribution of glaciers is highly clustered, with larger and denser clusters located in the northern Rocky Mountains. Lesser concentrations of small glaciers occur in the southern Rocky Mountains. The total area of glaciers in the Rocky Mountains of the U.S.A. is 78.9 km2.

The accumulation and distribution of the 2H content of near-surface layers in the eastern part of the Ronne Ice Shelf were determined from 16 firn cores drilled to about 10 m depth during the Filchner IIIa and IV campaigns in 1990 and 1992, respectively. The cores were dated stratigraphically by seasonal δ2H variations in the firn. In addition, 3H and high-resolution chemical profiles were used to assist in dating. Both the accumulation rate and the stable-isotope content decrease with increasing distance from the ice edge: the δ2H values range from about 195‰ at the ice edge to -25‰ at BAS sites 5 and 6, south of Henry Ice Rise, and the accumulation rates from about 210 to 90 kgm-2 a-1. The δ2H values of the near-surface firn and the 10 m firn temperatures (Θ) at individual sites are very well correlated: dδ2H/dΘ = (10.3 ± 0.6)‰K-1; r = 0.97.

The δ2H profiles of the two ice cores BI3 and BI5 drilled in 1990 and 1992 to 215 and 320 m depth, respectively, reflect the gradual depletion in 2H in the firn upstream of the drill sites. Comparison with the surface data indicates that the ice above 142 m in core BIS and above 137 m in core BI3 was deposited on the ice shelf, whereas the deeper ice, down to 152.8 m depth, most probably originated from the margin of the Antarctic ice sheet.

A 100 m ice core from the Ronne Ice Shelf, drilled during the 1983-84 field season, was dated by isotopic stratigraphy, using the well-known seasonal variation in the 18O content in firn and ice; the layers at a depth of 89 m are probably 400 years old. Layer thicknesses deduced from the 18O profile indicate short-term variations of the snow-accumulation rate over the last 400 years. The area of deposition of the material recovered with the core is estimated by a two-dimensional flow model and by the 18O content of the core, which decreases from –27.5‰ in the upper part of the core to –32.0‰ at 89 m depth.

Accumulation rates in the eastern part of Ronne Ice Shelf were determined by isotopic stratigraphy (18O). The samples were taken from snow-pits dug during the Filchner I and II operations in 1984 and 1986. In general, the accumulation rate decreases towards the south; the greatest decrease, from 21.3 to 13.3 g cm−2 a−1, was observed between Filchner Station and measuring point 341, sited 270 km up-stream of the ice edge. The δ18O values of the near-surface layers vary between −25 and -29‰. The 18O content in the more southerly part is progressively depleted in the direction of Möllereisstrom, paralleling a decrease in the accumulation rate. Near the ice edge the 18O content decreases to the west. A 100 m ice core drilled in 1984 at point 340, 220 km from the ice edge, probably goes back to A.D. 1460; it has been dated by isotopic stratigraphy.

The accumulation rate up-stream of the drilling site was deduced from the sequence of annual layers, using a simple ice-flow model. The accumulation shows strong variations over the last 200 years, which may be caused in part by local variations in the accumulation on Ronne Ice Shelf.

Evidence for climatic changes during the last 520 years was inferred from 18O content of a 100 m ice core from the Ronne Ice Shelf, Antarctica. The core was stratigraphically dated using seasonal variations of l8O content. The mean 18O content of the annual layers calculated on the basis of this dating decreases with depth z according to δ18O (‰) = −27.3 - 0.049z (m) and reflects first of all the decrease of the 18O content of the near-surface layers in the catchment area of the core from the drilling site 250 km to the south. This effect was corrected by assuming a linear decrease of the 18O content of the near-surface layers with increasing distance from the drilling site. Corrected δ18O values show a large scatter from year-to-year due to the local variability. The smoothed isotopic record displays variations in different time scales, which are caused most probably by climatological induced temperature variations. The gradient of 18O content with the 10 m firn temperature of 1.15‰/K found in the middle part of the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf was used to transfer the 18O series to a temperature record.

The inclusion of winter cereals in spring-annual rotations in the northern Great Plains may reduce weed populations and herbicide requirements. A broad range of spring and winter cereals were compared for ability to suppress weeds and maximize grain yield at Lacombe (2002 to 2005) and Lethbridge (2003 to 2005), Alberta, Canada. High seeding rates (≥ 400 seeds/m2) were used in all years to maximize crop competitive ability. Spring cereals achieved high crop-plant densities (> 250 plants/m2) at most sites, but winter cereals had lower plant densities due to winterkill, particularly at Lethbridge in 2004. All winter cereals and spring barley were highly effective at reducing weed biomass at Lacombe for the first 3 yr of the study. Weed suppression was less consistently affected by winter cereals in the last year at Lacombe and at Lethbridge, primarily due to poor winter survival. Grain yields were highest for spring triticale and least for spring wheat at Lacombe, with winter cereals intermediate. At Lethbridge, winter cereals had higher grain yields in 2003 whereas spring cereals had higher yields in 2004 and 2005. Winter cereals were generally more effective at suppressing weed growth than spring cereals if a good crop stand was established, but overlap in weed-competitive ability among cultivars was considerable. This information will be used to enhance the sustainable production of winter and spring cereals in traditional and nontraditional agro-ecological zones.

Since 1979–80, isotope studies with oxygen-18 (18O) have been carried out at several snow pits and ice cores near the German Georg-von-Neumayer station (Ekström ice shelf, Atka Bay), as well as from the Filchner-Ronne ice shelves, in the framework of the German Antarctic research programme. The investigations of snow pits on the Filchner-Ronne ice shelves yield a standard deviation for the annual average δ18O values of approximately 1‰ over the last five years, and a decrease of δ18O with distance from the ice edge of about 1‰ per 50 km. The variation of δ18O for stratigraphically matching snow layers from snow pits at the same location in different years is about 0.3‰ on the Filchner-Ronne ice shelves, and 0.8‰ at Georg-von-Neumayer station. The mean annual accumulation rate in the surroundings of Georg-von-Neumayer station was determined to be 34 g cm-2 for the years 1977–81. On the Filchner-Ronne ice shelves the mean annual accumulation rate (1979–83) decreases from 22 g cm−2 at Filchner station to 15 g cm−2 at traverse point T340, located 200 km southeast of Filchner station.

The ice cap on Berkner Island is grounded on bedrock within the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf and is, therefore, expected to be a well-suited place to retrieve long-term ice-core records reflecting the environmental situation of the Weddell Sea region. Shallow firn cores were drilled to 11 m at the two main summits of Berkner Island and analysed in high depth resolution for electrical d.c. conductivity(ECM), stable isotopes, chloride, sulphate, nitrate and methane-sulphonate (MSA).From the annual layering of δD and non-sea-salt (nss) sulphate, a mean annual snow accumulation of 26.6 cm water at the north dome and 17.4cm water at the south domeare obtained. As a result of ineffective wind scouring indicated by a relatively lownear-surface snow density, regular annual cycles are found for all species at least in the upper 4-5 m. Post-depositional changes are responsible for a substantial decrease o[the seasonal δD and nitrate amplitude as well as for considerable migration of the MSA signal operating below a depth of 3-4 m. The mean chemical and isotopic firn properties at the south dome correspond to the situation on the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf at a comparable distance to the coast, whereas the north dome is found to be much more influenced by maritime air masses. Persistent high sea-salt levels in winter snow at Berkner Island heavily obscure the determination of nss sulphate probably due to sulphate fractionation in the Antarctic sea-salt aerosol. Estimated time-scale spredict ages at 400 m depth to be ~2000 years for the north and ~3000 years for the south dome. Pleistocene ice is expected in the bottom 200 and 300 m, respectively.

We designed a parent-directed home-visiting intervention targeting socioeconomic status (SES) disparities in children's early language environments. A randomized controlled trial was used to evaluate whether the intervention improved parents' knowledge of child language development and increased the amount and diversity of parent talk. Twenty-three mother–child dyads (12 experimental, 11 control, aged 1;5–3;0) participated in eight weekly hour-long home-visits. In the experimental group, but not the control group, parent knowledge of language development increased significantly one week and four months after the intervention. In lab-based observations, parent word types and tokens and child word types increased significantly one week, but not four months, post-intervention. In home-based observations, adult word tokens, conversational turn counts, and child vocalization counts increased significantly during the intervention, but not post-intervention. The results demonstrate the malleability of child-directed language behaviors and knowledge of child language development among low-SES parents.

We present a preliminary analysis of the self-absorbed [CII]-spectra observed with SOFIA/GREAT towards NGC 2024. Together with the detected [13CII] hyperfine satellites, the observed spectra require surprisingly high column densities of C+, both in the warm core and the foreground absorption component. Such high column densities are a challenge to explain with present state-of-the-art PDR models of the UV/molecular cloud interaction.

This paper presents the development of a sensor to detect the oxidative and radiation induced degradation of polypropylene. Recently we have examined the use of crosslinked assemblies of nanoparticles as a chemiresistor-type sensor for the degradation products. We have developed a simple method that uses a siloxane matrix to fabricate a chemiresistor-type sensor that minimizes the swelling transduction mechanism while optimizing the change in dielectric response. These sensors were exposed with the use of a gas chromatography system to three previously identified polypropylene degradation products including 4-methyl-2-pentanone, acetone, and 2-pentanone. The limits of detection 210 ppb for 4-methy-2-pentanone, 575 ppb for 2-pentanone, and the LoD was unable to be determined for acetone due to incomplete separation from the carbon disulfide carrier.

Information on the morphological and genetic identification of this species is given, and the most important diagnostic features are illustrated. Its systematic position within the genus Drusus is affirmed and some zoogeographical and ecological notes are added.

Experimental results on sediment erosion (scour) by a plane turbulent wall jet, issuing from a sluice gate, are presented which show clearly – it seems for the first time – that the turbulent wall layer is destabilized by the concave curvature of the water/sediment interface. The streamwise Görtler vortices which emerge create sediment streaks or longitudinal sediment ridges. The analysis of the results in terms of Görtler instability of the wall layer indicates that the strength of these curvature-excited streamwise vortices is such that the sediment transport is primarily due to turbulence created by these vortices. Their contribution to the wall shear stress is taken to be of the same form as the normal turbulent wall shear stress. For this reason, the model developed by Hogg et al. (J. Fluid Mech. Vol. 338, 1997, p. 317) remains valid; only the numerical coefficients are affected. The logarithmic dependency of the time evolution of the scour-hole depth predicted by this model is shown to be in good agreement with experiments. New scaling laws for the quasi-steady state depth and the associated time, inspired by the Hogg et al. (1997) model are proposed. Furthermore, it is emphasized that at least two scouring regimes must be distinguished: a short-time regime after which a quasi-steady state is reached, followed by a long-time regime, leading to an asymptotic state of virtually no sediment transport.

Photoelectron Yield Spectroscopy is one of the most direct methods to study the density of gap states of amorphous semiconductors. We have made use of it to investigate the transient changes of the density of gap states of a-Si:H upon illumination with above-band-gap light. An excitation density of 50 mW/cm2 of 532 nm light from a frequency doubled Nd-YAG laser was modulated with frequencies between 0.1 Hz and 10 KHz and the transient response of the photoelectron yield signal was monitored by gated electron counting or a lock-in amplifier. From this we deduce a reversible increase of the occupied density of defect states under illumination with a maximum Δg ∼ 1017 cm3 eV-1 at about 0.3 eV below the Fermi energy and a decrease below EF− 0.75 eV, i. e. in the region of deep tail states. The effect exhibits a wide spectrum of time constants involved. Based on additional transient surface photo voltage measurements as well as numerical simulations we argue that the observed redistribution of states is not due to a light induced change in surface band bending or due to a mere excitation of electrons from occupied to empty states. Instead, we interpret the observed effect as a conversion of weak to dangling bonds, i.e. a precursor of the Staebler-Wronski Effect, lacking however the final step of hydrogen stabilisation necessary for the creation of metastable defects.
