Objective:
Empirical support for inclusion of performance validity testing (PVTs) in neuropsychological assessment continues to grow (Sweet et al., 2021). However, considerable validation is still needed to understand the impact of culturally mediated factors on the reliability of current, commonly used PVTs to accurately classify effort among various cultural groups. This study sought to contribute to the literature by examining the utility of several PVTs in a non-clinical, community-dwelling sample in Kampala, Uganda.
Participants and Methods:Participants included 52 residents (25 Female, 27 Male) who were born between 1953-2003 from the Wabigalo community of central Kampala. Individuals were recruited by community leaders and volunteered to participate. All 52 participants were administered the Dot Counting Test (DCT; Boone et al., 2002), Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM; Tombaugh, 1997), and Rey 15-Item Memorization Test (Rey 15; Lezak, 1995). Twenty-five participants also completed Green’s Non-Verbal Medical Symptom Validity Test (NV-MSVT; Green, 2006). Data from three participants was excluded due to suspected memory concerns. Instructions for all tests were translated into Luganda by a professional translator with experience in Luganda and were administered by Luganda-speaking individuals.
Results:Using test manual-derived cut scores, 71.4% (n = 35) participants scored in the invalid range on the DCT, 10.2% (n = 5) produced total combined scores in the invalid range on Rey 15, 6.1% (n = 3) failed TOMM Trial 2, and one participant (4.3%) exceeded cut-offs on Green’s NV-MSVT.
Conclusions:In this non-clinical sample, manual cutoffs for DCT contributed to a high type-1 error rate. These findings suggest that culturally mediated factors may contribute to differences in engagement or performance on DCT. Future studies should explore these factors and continue to examine the utility of widely used tests in diverse samples.

The principal aim of this study was to optimize the diagnosis of canine neuroangiostrongyliasis (NA). In total, 92 cases were seen between 2010 and 2020. Dogs were aged from 7 weeks to 14 years (median 5 months), with 73/90 (81%) less than 6 months and 1.7 times as many males as females. The disease became more common over the study period. Most cases (86%) were seen between March and July. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was obtained from the cisterna magna in 77 dogs, the lumbar cistern in f5, and both sites in 3. Nucleated cell counts for 84 specimens ranged from 1 to 146 150 cells μL−1 (median 4500). Percentage eosinophils varied from 0 to 98% (median 83%). When both cisternal and lumbar CSF were collected, inflammation was more severe caudally. Seventy-three CSF specimens were subjected to enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) testing for antibodies against A. cantonensis; 61 (84%) tested positive, titres ranging from <100 to ⩾12 800 (median 1600). Sixty-one CSF specimens were subjected to real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) testing using a new protocol targeting a bioinformatically-informed repetitive genetic target; 53/61 samples (87%) tested positive, CT values ranging from 23.4 to 39.5 (median 30.0). For 57 dogs, it was possible to compare CSF ELISA serology and qPCR. ELISA and qPCR were both positive in 40 dogs, in 5 dogs the ELISA was positive while the qPCR was negative, in 9 dogs the qPCR was positive but the ELISA was negative, while in 3 dogs both the ELISA and qPCR were negative. NA is an emerging infectious disease of dogs in Sydney, Australia.

While state legislative rollbacks of public-sector workers’ collective bargaining rights in Wisconsin and other US states in 2011 appeared to signal an unprecedented wave of hostility toward the public sector, such episodes have a long history. Drawing on recent work on “governance repertoires,” this article compares antistate initiatives in Wisconsin in 2011 to two previous periods of conflict over the size and shape of government: the 1930s and the 1970s. We find that while small government advocates in all three periods used similar language and emphasized comparable themes, the outcomes of their advocacy were different due to the distinct historical moments in which they unfolded and the way local initiatives were linked to political projects at the national level. We explore the relationship of local versions of small government activism to their national-level counterparts in each period to show how national-level movements and the ideological, social, and material resources they provided shaped governance repertoires in Wisconsin. We argue that the three moments of conflict over the size of government are deeply intertwined with the prehistory, emergence, and rise to dominance of neoliberal political rationality and can provide insight into how that new “governance repertoire” was experienced and built at the local level.

Objective
To assess the quality of nutrition content and the integration of user quality components and behaviour change theory relevant to food purchasing behaviour in a sample of existing mobile apps.
DesignDescriptive comparative analysis of eleven mobile apps comprising an assessment of their alignment with existing evidence on nutrition, behaviour change and user quality, and their potential ability to support healthier food purchasing behaviour.
SettingMobile apps freely available for public use in GoogePlay were assessed and scored according to agreed criteria to assess nutrition content quality and integration of behaviour change theory and user quality components.
SubjectsA sample of eleven mobile apps that met predefined inclusion criteria to ensure relevance and good quality.
ResultsThe quality of the nutrition content varied. Improvements to the accuracy and appropriateness of nutrition content are needed to ensure mobile apps support a healthy behaviour change process and are accessible to a wider population. There appears to be a narrow focus towards behaviour change with an overemphasis on behavioural outcomes and a small number of behaviour change techniques, which may limit effectiveness. A significant effort from the user was required to use the mobile apps appropriately which may negatively influence user acceptability and subsequent utilisation.
ConclusionsExisting mobile apps may offer a potentially effective approach to supporting healthier food purchasing behaviour but improvements in mobile app design are required to maximise their potential effectiveness. Engagement of mobile app users and nutrition professionals is recommended to support effective design.

The household as a unit of analysis has achieved wide currency in social science circles in recent years. Researchers have shown that in many contexts, both rural and urban, the household is the locus of important productive processes. It has also been demonstrated to be the context within which many decisions related to productive strategies are made and where income is pooled and then allocated. Testimony to the growth of interest in household-based analyses is provided by the recent appearance of a number of edited volumes (Netting et al. 1984; Smith et al. 1984) and review articles (Yanagisako 1979; Guyer 1981; Schmink 1984) on the topic.

Dietary fatty acids (FA) are the major determinants of blood lipids, and measurements of plasma phospholipid FA (PL-FA) composition that reflect the dietary intake of FA may provide insights into the relationships between diet and CHD. We assessed CHD mortality associations with PL-FA (SFA, PUFA and MUFA) levels measured in a nested case–control study of 116 cases of CHD death and 239 controls that were frequency-matched for age and employment grade. The participants had plasma levels of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C), HDL-cholesterol, apo B and apo A1, C-reactive protein (CRP) and fibrinogen recorded. SFA levels were significantly positively correlated with total cholesterol, LDL-C, apo B, CRP protein and fibrinogen. By contrast, phospholipid-PUFA were inversely associated with CRP, but not with any of the lipids. A higher SFA content (top v. bottom quarter) was associated with a 2-fold higher risk of CHD (OR and 95 % CI: OR 2·12; 95 % CI: 1·13, 3·99), and an equivalent difference in PUFA was associated with a halving in CHD risk (OR 0·49; 95 % CI: 0·26, 0·94), but MUFA was unrelated to CHD risk. These associations were substantially attenuated, after additional adjustment for lipids and inflammatory markers. Higher levels of saturated fat and lower levels of polyunsaturated fats were each associated with a higher risk of CHD in elderly men, and these associations were partly explained by their effects on blood lipids and biomarkers of inflammation.

Summary
ORIGIN AND HISTORY
Louis Leakey hoped that a study of chimpanzees, our closest living relatives, living on the shores of a lake might give clues as to the behavior of Miocene hominoids living on the shores of Lake Victoria, on the islands of Rusinga and Mfangano. Accordingly, he arranged for Jane Goodall to start observing the chimpanzees of Gombe on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika in July 1960.
As it turned out, the proximity of the lake was not relevant, but information about their behavior was of great significance. Like our earliest ancestors, chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) hunted for meat and shared the kill. And they used and made tools, a behavior believed to be unique to our own species – so that Leakey gleefully suggested that we must redefine man, redefine tool, or include chimps as human! As a result of these and other fascinating discoveries, both Jane Goodall and the Gombe chimpanzees gained a good deal of publicity around the world (Goodall, 1965, 1971). This attracted funding from a succession of donors. Other scientists and students arrived to work at Gombe, and the Gombe Stream Research Centre (GSRC) was established in 1964. The study has continued from 1960 until the present day: there have been over 200 scientific papers, 35 Ph.D. theses, over 30 books, nine films, over 160 popular articles and secondary writings, and hundreds of lecture tours and conferences; and students trained at Gombe have moved on to study chimpanzees elsewhere, as well as different species of primates and other animals in other countries.

Ancient Egyptians are thought to have been the only people in the Old World who were practising mummification in the Bronze Age (c. 2200-700 BC). But now a remarkable series of finds from a remote Scottish island indicates that Ancient Britons were performing similar, if less elaborate, practices of bodily preservation. Evidence of mummification is usually limited to a narrow range of arid or frozen environments which are conducive to soft tissue preservation. Mike Parker Pearson and his team show that a combination of microstructural, contextual and AMS 14C analysis of bone allows the identification of mummification in more temperate and wetter climates where soft tissues and fabrics do not normally survive. Skeletons from Cladh Hallan on South Uist, Western Isles, Scotland were buried several hundred years after death, and the skeletons provide evidence of post mortem manipulation of body parts. Perhaps these practices were widespread in mainland Britain during the Bronze Age.

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is a common cause of the dementia syndrome. Symptomatic treatment of the fluctuating cognition, visual hallucinations, and sleep distrubance that characterize this condition is challenging; neuroleptics are relatively contraindicated. We describe eight patients fulfilling the consensus diagnostic criteria for probable DLB who were treated with rivastigmine. Clinical features rated were: cognition by the Modified Mini-Mental State Examination (3MS); and behavioral and psychiatric symptoms by the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI). Additional information was obtained from family and nursing reports. Seven patients showed resolution or improvement in cognition and neuropsychiatric symptoms as demonstrated by improvement in their 3MS and NPI scores. They also became more independent in mobility and activities of daily living, and the majority returned to live in their own home. Of the seven patients with sleep disruption, six improved. One case had no improvement in his symptomatology and the rivastigmine was stopped. Outcomes in this case series suggest that rivastigmine is well tolerated in clinical practice.

Accounts of late-twentieth-century capitalist restructuring have emphasized the decline of “permanent” work contracts and the growth of more “flexible” ways of employing labor. Most of these accounts have argued that, under conditions of global competition, firms seek to reduce the cost of wages and benefits by hiring more temporary workers. Such accounts assume permanent labor contracts to be a norm that is violated only when economic systems come under pressure. This essay adopts a different perspective, suggesting that, in fact, permanent labor contracts have been normative only in certain historical situations (such as the twentieth century United States). In a global and trans-historical context, these contracts have been introduced under specific conditions to solve particular kinds of problems. Thus, this study attempts to shift the question from “why is permanent work declining?” to “where and why do permanent work contracts emerge?”

One of the many possible ways of obtaining information about the marital relationship is by observing the marital partners together, a procedure being increasingly used in clinical practice. Little is established, however, for either clinical or research purposes, about how such observations may be ordered, with what reliability they can be made, or how they relate to other aspects of marital function and to the psychological health of the partners. This paper is concerned with just such issues.
