Technical summary
The question of how science can become a lever in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals permeates most recent sustainability research. Wide-ranging literature calling for a transformative approach has emerged in recent years. This ‘transformative turn’ is fueled by publications from fields such as sustainability science, social-ecological research, conservation science, sustainability transitions, or sustainability governance studies. However, there is a lack of a shared understanding specifically of what is meant for research to be transformative in this developing discourse around doing science differently to tackle sustainability problems. We aim to advance transformative research for sustainability. We define transformative research and outline six of its characteristics: (1) interventional nature and a theory of change focus; (2) collaborative modes of knowledge production, experimentation and learning; (3) systems thinking literacy and contextualization; (4) reflexivity, normative and inner dimensions; (5) local agency, decolonization, and reshaping power; (6) new quality criteria and rethinking impact. We highlight three tensions between transformative research and traditional paradigms of academic research: (1) process- and output-orientation; (2) accountability toward society and toward science; (3) methodologies rooted in scientific traditions and post-normal methodologies. We conclude with future directions on how academia could reconcile these tensions to support and promote transformative research.
Non-technical summaryDominant ways of doing research are not enough to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The typical response of science to dealing with the current local and global sustainability crises is to produce and accumulate more knowledge. Transformative research seeks to couple knowledge production with co-creating change. This paper defines the transformative way of doing research to pro-actively support society's fight against pressing societal and environmental problems. We present six characteristics of transformative research. We reflect on the challenges related to implementing these characteristics in scientific practice and on how academia can play its part.
Social media summarySustainability transformation needs to be reflected in science, but what makes sustainability research transformative?

Introduction
Suicide is a serious public health problem since it accounts for nearly 900,000 deaths each year worldwide. Globally in 2019, 10.7 persons out of 100,000 died by suicide. Psychiatric disorders are related to an overwhelming proportion of these cases. In the last years, several specific interventions and action plans for suicide prevention have been implemented in a number of European countries.
ObjectivesOur aim was to analyze recent epidemiologic trends of suicide mortality rates in Europe.
MethodsAnnual national statistics of suicide mortality rates derived from Eurostat public databases from 2011 to 2019 were analyzed for 38 European countries. The suicide mortality rate was estimated per year/100,000 population. Linear regression models were used to study temporal trends of suicidal mortality. Analyses were performed using RStudio.
ResultsAvailable data show a statistically significant reduction in suicide mortality rates from 2011 to 2019 in 15 European countries, and a significant increase for Turkey (ES=0.32, SD=0.06, p=0.037) (Fig 1). The greatest significant decrease was reported in Lithuania (ES=-1.42, SD=0.02, p=0.02), followed by Hungary (ES=-1.13, SD=0.11, p=0.0007), Latvia (ES=-0.76, SD=0.11, p=0.007), and Poland (ES=-0.73, SD=0.10, p=0.001). Italy reported the lowest significant reduction in suicide mortality rates (ES=-0.13, SD=0.018, p=0.003). The remaining 16 countries showed no significant changes in suicide mortality trends.
Image:
ConclusionsIn the last years, Europe registered an overall reduction in reported suicide rates. However, more recent data (i.e., suicide rates after COVID-19 pandemic, age and sex-related effect on suicide rates) should be analyzed and used to implement future recommendations. Current and future suicide prevention strategies aim to contribute to a greater reduction of suicide rates in the different European countries.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, progressive, autoimmune, neurodegenerative disorder that can interfere with physical and psychological functioning, negatively affecting health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Fostering mindfulness may mitigate the negative consequences of MS on HRQoL. The relationship between mindfulness, mood and MS-related quality of life was investigated. In total, 52 individuals with MS completed questionnaires to examine the relationship between trait mindfulness and wellness. Higher levels of trait mindfulness were associated with better HRQoL, lower depression and anxiety, lower fatigue impact and fewer perceived cognitive deficits. Mindfulness interventions have the potential to enhance wellness in those living with MS.

It is known that if the underlying iterated function system satisfies the open set condition, then the upper box dimension of an inhomogeneous self-similar set is the maximum of the upper box dimensions of the homogeneous counterpart and the condensation set. First, we prove that this ‘expected formula’ does not hold in general if there are overlaps in the construction. We demonstrate this via two different types of counterexample: the first is a family of overlapping inhomogeneous self-similar sets based upon Bernoulli convolutions; and the second applies in higher dimensions and makes use of a spectral gap property that holds for certain subgroups of $\text{SO}(d)$ for $d\geq 3$. We also obtain new upper bounds, derived using sumsets, for the upper box dimension of an inhomogeneous self-similar set which hold in general. Moreover, our counterexamples demonstrate that these bounds are optimal. In the final section we show that if the weak separation property is satisfied, that is, the overlaps are controllable, then the ‘expected formula’ does hold.

The cubic polytype of silicon carbide is a stimulating candidate for Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (MEMS) applications due to its interesting physical and chemical properties. Recently, we demonstrated the possibility to elaborate 3C-SiC membranes on 3C-SiC pseudo-substrates, using a silicon epilayer grown by Low Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition as a sacrificial layer. Such structures could be the starting point for the elaboration of new MEMS devices. However, the roughness still represents a major concern. Therefore, in this contribution, we investigate the influence of an excimer laser irradiation on the Si epilayer surface prior to the 3C-SiC epilayer growth. We compare these results with the 3C-SiC epilayer grown directly on the as-grown Si epilayer.

The pairing of helical tip vortices in the wake of a two-bladed rotor is investigated experimentally. Time-resolved particle image velocimetry measurements provide a clear temporal and spatial evolution of the vortical structures, highlighting the transition to instability and the effect of tip speed ratio and helical spacing. The temporal growth rate of the vortex system instabilities were measured and are shown to be dependent on helical spacing. The evolution of filaments and their growth rates support the argument that the mutual inductance mode is the driving mechanism behind the transition to an unstable wake. The measurements are in agreement with maximum growth rates predicted by linear stability analyses of single- and double-helix arrangements. In addition, the wake topology due to varying rotor load through tip speed ratio variation is shown to play an important role in the initial symmetry breaking that drives the wake transition.

This work reports on thermal and electrical conductivities and interface resistances for transport along aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNT) films grown on a nickel superalloy (Inconel) substrate. The measured specific thermal resistance of the combined Inconel–CNT and indium–CNT interfaces is of the same order as reported for CNT and silicon or SiO2 interfaces but much higher than theoretical predictions considering perfect contact between the tubes and substrate. Imperfect mechanical contact with the substrate and a large contribution caused by indium–CNT interface are thought to be mainly responsible for the high interface resistances and the low effective values of thermal and electrical conductivities. However, reported results represent an incentive for further research on CNT synthesis on metallic substrates for thermal management applications and pave the way for much easier integration of carbon nanotubes in electronic applications.

This work reports temperature dependent thermal and electrical properties characterization of long (mm size) single-walled carbon nanotube strands. Electrical properties are measured using a 4-probe method. Thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity are determined using an AC driven, self-heating method. Normalized values of resistivity, thermal conductivity, specific heat, thermal diffusivity, and the temperature coefficient of resistance are reported. The trends observed in the temperature dependent properties are comparable with previously published data on multi-walled carbon nanotube strands measured with a similar technique.

We crystallize amorphous silicon (a-Si) layers (thicknesses: ∼300nm and ∼1300nm for comparison) that are deposited on glass substrates (Corning 7059) by low pressure chemical vapor deposition using a continuous wave Ar+-laser. We scan the raw beam with a diameter of ∼60νm in single traces and traces with varying overlap (30-60%). With optimized process parameters (fluence, scan velocity, overlap) we achieve polycrystalline Si with grains as wide as 100νm. The grain boundary population is dominated by first and second order twin boundaries as analyzed by electron backscattering analysis in the scanning electron microscope and convergent beam electron diffraction in the transmission electron microscope. These twins are known not (or only marginally) to degrade the electrical properties of the material. In addition to twins, dislocations and twin lamellae occur at varying densities (depending on grain orientation and process parameters). The recombination activity of the defects is analyzed by EBIC and according to these measurements crystallization receipts are defined that yield the reduction of electrically detrimental defects.

Three copper systems with relevance to materials technology are discussed. In the first, a CuS precursor, Cu4S 10(4-methylpyridine)4 (4-MePy), was prepared by three routes: reaction of Cu2S, reaction of CuBr•SMe2 and oxidation of copper powder with excess sulfur in 4-methylpyridine by sulfur. In the second, copper powder was found to react with excess thiourea (H2NC(S)NH2) in 4-methylpyridine to produce thiocyanate (NCS-) complexes. Three isolated and characterized compounds are: Cu(NCS)(4-MePy)2, a polymer, [4-MePy•H][Cu(NCS)3(4-MePy)2], a salt, and t-Cu(NCS)2(4-MePy)4. Finally, an attempt to produce a mixed-metal sulfide precursor of Cu and Ga in N-methylimidazole (N-MeIm) resulted in the synthesis of a Cu-containing polymer, Cu(S04)(N-Melm). The structures are presented; the chemistry will be briefly discussed in the context of preparation and processing of copper-containing materials for aerospace applications.

Using the double pulse technique with two synchronized lasers, we studied the conditions of ignition and evolution of explosive crystallization. The structure of the resulting crystallized layers is analyzed by TEM. Results of calculations are reported describing the development of the two phase fronts: amorphous/molten and molten/crystalline. It is shown that the system takes more than 500 ns to reach the steady state. The experimental results support the model of creating first a melt nucleus in the amorphous layer followed by the formation of the crystalline nucleus in the molten sphere. Competitive solid phase nucleation and growth in the amorphous layer limit the temperature-time interval of melt nucleation. Defined explosively crystallized areas in laterally structured SOI layers are presented.
