The world faces a forced displacement crisis. Tens of millions of individuals have been forced across international boundaries worldwide. Therefore, the causes and consequences of refugee flows are the subjects of significant social science inquiry. Unfortunately, the historical lack of reliable data on actual refugee flows, country-specific data reporting timelines, and more general pre-2000 data quality issues have significantly limited empirical inferences on these topics. We replicate 28 articles on these topics using data newly released after a multiyear collaboration with the United Nations on annual dyadic flows. We observe major inconsistencies between the newly released flow numbers and the stock-based flow estimates upon which decades of research are based; we also find widespread inappropriate treatment of missing historical values. When we replicate the existing literature using the newly introduced flow data, correcting the treatment of missing historical values, and temporally extending/restricting the study periods, we produce significantly different results.

Objective:
Women have a greater lifetime risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease (AD) dementia than men, a sex/gender disparity that cannot be explained by female longevity alone. There is substantial evidence for sex differences in the effects of APOE £4 on risk for AD. While APOE e4 increases AD risk in both sexes, women who carry APOE e4 are disproportionately vulnerable to cognitive impairment and AD compared to their counterpart men. In contrast to APOE e4, APOE £2 is associated with slower cognitive decline and a lower risk of AD. Although a less robust literature, APOE e2 may also have sex-specific effects. Because APOE e2 is the rarest major APOE allele, well-powered studies are needed to examine sex-specific effects. The objective of the present study was to examine sex-specific associations of APOE e2 carriage with longitudinal cognitive decline in a large cohort of clinically unimpaired adults.
Participants and Methods:We used observational data from two sources: the National Alzheimer’s Coordinating Center (NACC) and the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center (ROS/MAP/MARS) studies. We included data from clinically unimpaired adults who were >50 years old at baseline who self-identified as non-Hispanic White (NHW) or non-Hispanic Black (NHB). Participants were categorized as APOE £2, £4, or £3/e3 carriers. APOE e2/e4 carriers were excluded. The same battery of neuropsychological tests was used to assess global cognition in participants from both data sources. Linear mixed models examined interactive associations of genotype (£2 or £4 vs. £3/£3), sex, and time on longitudinal cognition in NHW and NHB participants separately. Analyses were first performed in a pooled sample of NACC and ROS/MAP/MARS participants and if significant they were repeated separately in each data source.
Results:Across both data sources, 9,766 NHW (mean (SD) age=73.0(9.00) years, mean (SD) education=16.3(2.83) years, n(%) women=6,344(65.0)) and 2,010 NHB participants (mean(SD) age=71.3(7.59) years, mean(SD) education=14.9(3.10) years, n(%) women=1,583(78.8)) met inclusion criteria. Sex modified the association between APOE £2 and cognitive decline in NHW (ß=0.097, 95% CI: 0.023-0.172, pint=.01) but not NHB participants (ß=-0.011, 95% CI: -0.153-0.131, pint=.9). In sex-stratified analyses of NHW participants, APOE £2 (vs. £3/£3) carriage was associated with attenuated cognitive decline in men (ß=0.096, 95% CI: 0.037-0.155, p=.001), but not women (ß=-0.001, 95% CI: -0.044-0.043, p=.97). In analyses comparing men and women APOE £2 carriers, men exhibited slower cognitive decline than women (ß=0.120, 95% CI: 0.051-0.190, p=.001). Analyses performed separately in NACC and ROS/MAP revealed the same pattern of male-specific APOE £2 protection in NHW participants in both data sources.
Conclusions:In light of the longstanding view that APOE £2 protects against AD and dementia, our results provide evidence that APOE £2 is associated with attenuated cognitive decline in men but not women among NHW adults. This male-specific protection may contribute to sex differences in AD-related cognitive decline. Our findings have important implications for understanding the biological drivers of sex differences in AD risk, which is crucial for developing sex-specific strategies to prevent and treat AD dementia.
A ca. 39,000-year record of vegetation and climate change from the margin of the Namib Sand Sea

This paper presents the first continuous multi-proxy record of climate and vegetation change from the central Namib Desert extending over much of the last ca. 39,000 years. Derived from rock hyrax middens, evidence from stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes, pollen, and microcharcoal reveals significant differences between glacial-age and Holocene climates and vegetation types. Although still arid to semi-arid, conditions during Marine Oxygen Isotope Stages (MIS) 2–3 were significantly more humid than in the Late Holocene. Considerable associated vegetation change is apparent, with cooler temperatures and higher/more-regular rainfall promoting the westward expansion of relatively mesic shrubby karroid vegetation during MIS 2–3. With the last glacial–interglacial transition, increasing temperatures and less/less-regular rainfall resulted in marked vegetation changes and the establishment of current xeric grasslands. The inter-plant spacing of the karroid vegetation promoted by wetter conditions does not carry fire effectively, and the microcharcoal record indicates that more extensive fires may develop only with the development of grassier vegetation under drier conditions. As with other terrestrial records from the Namib Desert and environs, no Cape flora elements were found to support previously hypothesised expansion of the Fynbos Biome during the last glacial period.

Background:
Burnout is well characterised in physicians and residents but not in paediatric cardiology fellows, and few studies follow burnout longitudinally. Training-specific fears have been described in paediatric cardiology fellows but also have not been studied at multiple time points. This study aimed to measure burnout, training-specific fears, and professional fulfilment in paediatric cardiology fellows with the attention to time of year and year-of-training.
Methods:This survey-based study included the Professional Fulfillment Index and the Impact of Events Scale as well as an investigator-designed Fellow Fears Questionnaire. Surveys were distributed at three-time points during the academic year to paediatric cardiology fellows at a large Midwestern training programme. Fellow self-reported gender and year-of-training were collected. Descriptive analyses were performed.
Results:10/17 (59%) of fellows completed all surveys; 60% were female, 40% in the first-year class, 40% in the second-year class, and 20% in the third-year class. At least half of the fellows reported burnout at each survey time point, with lower mean professional fulfilment scores. The second-year class, who rotate primarily in the cardiac ICU, had higher proportions of burnout than the other two classes. At least half of fellows reported that they “often” or “always” worried about not having enough clinical knowledge or skills and about work–life balance.
Conclusions:Paediatric cardiology fellows exhibit high proportions of burnout and training-specific fears. Interventions to mitigate burnout should be targeted specifically to training needs, including during high-acuity rotations.

Hand hygiene is a simple, low-cost intervention that may lead to substantial population-level effects in suppressing acute respiratory infection epidemics. However, quantification of the efficacy of hand hygiene on respiratory infection in the community is lacking. We searched PubMed for randomised controlled trials on the effect of hand hygiene for reducing acute respiratory infections in the community published before 11 March 2021. We performed a meta-regression analysis using a Bayesian mixed-effects model. A total of 105 publications were identified, out of which six studies reported hand hygiene frequencies. Four studies were performed in household settings and two were in schools. The average number of handwashing events per day ranged from one to eight in the control arms, and four to 17 in the intervention arms. We estimated that a single hand hygiene event is associated with a 3% (80% credible interval (−1% to 7%)) decrease in the daily probability of an acute respiratory infection. Three of these six studies were potentially at high risk of bias because the primary outcome depended on self-reporting of upper respiratory tract symptoms. Well-designed trials with an emphasis on monitoring hand hygiene adherence are needed to confirm these findings.

Understanding the effects of crop management practices on weed survival and seed production is imperative in improving long-term weed management strategies, especially for herbicide-resistant weed populations. Kochia [Bassia scoparia (L.) A.J. Scott] is an economically important weed in western North American cropping systems for many reasons, including prolific seed production and evolved resistance to numerous herbicide sites of action. Field studies were conducted in 2014 in a total of four field sites in Wyoming, Montana, and Nebraska to quantify the impact of different crop canopies and herbicide applications on B. scoparia density and seed production. Crops used in this study were spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.), and corn (Zea mays L.). Herbicide treatments included either acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors effective on non-resistant B. scoparia or a non–ALS inhibiting herbicide effective for both ALS-resistant and ALS-susceptible B. scoparia. Bassia scoparia density midseason was affected more by herbicide choice than by crop canopy, whereas B. scoparia seed production per plant was affected more by crop canopy compared with herbicide treatment. Our results suggest that crop canopy and herbicide treatments were both influential on B. scoparia seed production per unit area, which is likely a key indicator of long-term management success for this annual weed species. The lowest germinable seed production per unit area was observed in spring wheat treated with non–ALS inhibiting herbicides, and the greatest germinable seed production was observed in sugar beet treated with ALS-inhibiting herbicides. The combined effects of crop canopy and herbicide treatment can minimize B. scoparia establishment and seed production.

The subsurface exploration of other planetary bodies can be used to unravel their geological history and assess their habitability. On Mars in particular, present-day habitable conditions may be restricted to the subsurface. Using a deep subsurface mine, we carried out a program of extraterrestrial analog research – MINe Analog Research (MINAR). MINAR aims to carry out the scientific study of the deep subsurface and test instrumentation designed for planetary surface exploration by investigating deep subsurface geology, whilst establishing the potential this technology has to be transferred into the mining industry. An integrated multi-instrument suite was used to investigate samples of representative evaporite minerals from a subsurface Permian evaporite sequence, in particular to assess mineral and elemental variations which provide small-scale regions of enhanced habitability. The instruments used were the Panoramic Camera emulator, Close-Up Imager, Raman spectrometer, Small Planetary Linear Impulse Tool, Ultrasonic drill and handheld X-ray diffraction (XRD). We present science results from the analog research and show that these instruments can be used to investigate in situ the geological context and mineralogical variations of a deep subsurface environment, and thus habitability, from millimetre to metre scales. We also show that these instruments are complementary. For example, the identification of primary evaporite minerals such as NaCl and KCl, which are difficult to detect by portable Raman spectrometers, can be accomplished with XRD. By contrast, Raman is highly effective at locating and detecting mineral inclusions in primary evaporite minerals. MINAR demonstrates the effective use of a deep subsurface environment for planetary instrument development, understanding the habitability of extreme deep subsurface environments on Earth and other planetary bodies, and advancing the use of space technology in economic mining.

Member-based civic associations, or citizen groups, have two crucial roles in American democracy. They advocate for members' interests in the public arena, but also operate as Tocquevillian “schools of democracy” linking citizens to politics and equipping them with the skills of democratic citizenship. Yet scant research has examined the interrelationships of these two roles. Does the work that civic associations do in developing democratic participants enhance the work they do advocating for members' interests in the public arena? We bring together two previously disparate strands of research on civic associations by arguing that a key factor affecting the political presence of civic associations is leadership quality. We focus on the relationship of leadership quality to political presence, using data from a unique 2003 study of 226 local entities of the Sierra Club. We show that organizations with more skilled and committed leaders have higher levels of political presence. This contrasts with previous research that has focused primarily on community context and resources as explanatory factors. This study shows that political presence is related to the extent to which leaders develop their skills and demonstrate commitment to the organization.

Introduction
Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) exhibit the capacity for unlimited self-renewal and the ability to differentiate into multiple cell lineages, and are termed pluripotent (Smith, 2001; Czyz et al., 2003). The study of mammalian ESCs may facilitate understanding of early developmental events and contribute to the advance of cell-based regenerative medicine (Loebel at al., 2003). ESCs are isolated from the inner cell mass (ICM) of the pre-implantation embryo (Evans and Kaufman, 1981) and share many properties with pluripotent cells from the ICM (Figure 35.1). These include the expression of key regulators of pluripotency and self-renewal, Oct4, Sox2 and Nanog, and the capacity to differentiate to all cell types of the embryo, including mesoderm, ectoderm and endoderm (Orkin, 2005). Oct4 is activated at the four cell stage of mouse pre-implantation development and is essential for the formation of the ICM (Chew et al., 2005). Increased Oct4 levels in mouse ESCs (mESCs) result in differentiation to primitive endoderm and mesoderm, whereas a reduction leads to differentiation to trophectoderm (Niwa et al., 2000). Co-regulation of genes by Oct4 and Sox2 appears to be essential in maintaining self-renewal of ESCs (Chew et al., 2005). Nanog acts in concert with Oct4 and Sox2, where Nanog overexpression negates the requirement for leukemia-inhibitory factor (LIF)-activated signaling by mESCs for self-renewal (Mitsui et al., 2003). Nanog knockout results in differentiation of mESCs into parietal/visceral endoderm (Mitsui et al., 2003).

Thin films of sol-gel SiO2 and TiO2 were used to fabricate two types of onedimensional photonic crystals: an omnidirectional reflector and microcavity resonator. The reflector consisted of six SiO2/TiO2 bilayers, designed with a stopband in the near infrared. Reflectance measurements over an incident angle range of 0–80° showed an omnidirectional band of 70 nm, which agrees with theoretical predictions for this materials system. The microcavity resonator consisted of a TiO2 Fabry-Perot cavity sandwiched between two SiO2/TiO2 mirrors of three bilayers each. We have fabricated a microcavity with resonance at λcavity = 1500nm and achieved a quality factor of Q=35. We measured a modulation in the cavity resonance frequency with a change of defect layer thickness and incident angle of light. This work demonstrates the feasibility of fabricating photonic crystals via the sol-gel method.

It is an established fact that a majority of a product's cost is determined by its design. Hence, effort should be directed to achieve a lower cost design without sacrificing the original functionality. A computer-aided product redesign system is proposed to provide help in generating assembly-oriented redesign by taking the robotic assembly constraints into consideration. The system operates in two phases: In the first phase, an objective evaluation of the input design is performed to determine whether there is a need for redesign. During the second phase, the focus is to aid the designer in searching for feasible design alternatives. Three quantitative measures have been proposed to evaluate the conformity of an input design to a list of DFA design guidelines. If the input design received a bad evaluation results on any of the three measures, a search for feasible redesign suggestions is initiated to derive suitable redesign suggestions.

Indentation studies of polycrystalline heavily work-hardened and annealed oxygen-free copper have been made using spherical indenters of radii 7, 35, 60, 200 and 500 μm. In the case of the 200 and 500 μm radii indenters an instron mechanical testing machine was used for applying the load, whereas for the smaller indenters a UMIS 2000 machine was used. It is shown that the relationship between the mean indentation pressure, Pm and a/R (i.e. indentation stress-strain), where a and R are the radii of the circle of contact and indenter, respectively, is independent of indenter radius, provided the indentation radius, a, is correctly measured. It is also shown that in the case of the work-hardened copper, the departure from the elastic behaviour occurs at Pm ≈ 1.1 Y, where Y is the uni-axial yield stress of the copper. In the case of the annealed copper, although the Pm vs a/R curve for the smallest indenter has the same form as for the 200 and 500 7mu;m radii indenters, the values of Pm, are higher by 50% over the enitre range of a/R. It is discussed that the spherical indentation hardness measurements, using micron-sized spherical indenters, provide a suitable method for estimating the yield stress of thin coatings and surfaces.
