Application of the WHO nutrient profile model on food product data recorded for the Austrian project “Food in the Spotlight”

Introduction:
Children are exposed to marketing of foods with a high content of energy, fat, sugar and salt on a daily basis, which can have negative consequences via increasing children's preferences for those foods. An unhealthy diet can promote obesity and other noncommunicable diseases. The objective of this scientific work was to assess the applicability of the nutrient profile model (NPM) for food products available in the Austrian market. The model was developed by the WHO Regional Office for Europe to reduce the impact of marketing to children.
Material and Methods:The NPM was applied to food product information, which was recorded for the project “Food in the Spotlight” (www.lebensmittellupe.at). Food products were assigned to food categories made by the WHO and the NPM was applied to identify products, which should not be allowed to be marketed to children. As the WHO NPM is flexible and can be adapted to the national context possible adaptations of the model to the Austrian market were developed.
Results:Among those product groups which were included in Food in the Spotlight 0% of cocoa (n = 89), milk drinks with additional ingredients (e.g. strawberry milk, n = 111), soup pearl croutons (n = 13), ketchups (n = 79) and pestos (n = 119), 0.4% of soft drinks (Cola, lemonade etc., n = 454), 8% of pizza and pizza-like products (n = 274), 13% of yoghurt products with additional ingredients (n = 611), 18% of sugos (n = 193), 28% of fruit and vegetable purees (n = 36) and 33% of breakfast cereals (n = 678) were found to be eligible for marketing to children. Those 0.4% of soft drinks which would be allowed are two waters flavoured with aroma. Pure products such as whole milk and yoghurts with 3.5% fat would not be allowed because they exceed the thresholds for total fat. For those products with a packaging appealing to children and adolescents almost none passed the NPM.
Conclusion:Our results showed, that before the NPM can be implemented in Austria, it is important to adapt the model to national dietary guidelines. Additionally, food categories could be modified to be more suitable for the Austrian market, as some products which are common in Austria could not be easily assigned to the WHO food categories. To adapt the WHO NPM to the national context cooperation between health experts and food manufacturers is necessary.

The present study has been designed for pharmacological validation of chronic social stress paradigm as a model of depressive symptoms in rats. For this, rats were subjected to 5 weeks of daily social defeat and in parallel treated for clinically relevant period of 4 weeks with antidepressant drugs citalopram and reboxetine and neuroleptic drug haloperidol. Anxiolytic diazepam was administered acutely at the end of the stress period. The effects of social stress and the treatments were investigated in behavioural paradigms such as sucrose preference, forced swim test, open field test and elevated plus maze. Four weeks of oral treatment with applied antidepressants ameliorated the adverse effects of social stress and normalized behaviours related to motivation and reward sensitivity. The treatment with haloperidol worsened the adverse effects of chronic social stress having effects similar to stress on reward and motivation related behaviours. Treatment with diazepam caused reduction of anxiety related behaviours as measured in elevated plus maze in control animals having no effects on socially stressed individuals. Neither sucrose preference nor performance in forced swim test was affected by diazepam treatment. Effectiveness and selectivity of antidepressant treatment in ameliorating socially induced behavioural disturbances proofs validity of chronic social stress as a model of depressive symptoms in rats.

Introduction
Bipolar Disorder is a devastating disease with a genetic heritability. An orchestra of around 500 gene variants is leading to vulnerability.
One interesting candidate gene group are the socalled CLOCK GENES. The molecular 24h clock has several CLOCK GENES and the last gene ARNTL encodes for an activator of MAOA transcription and leads therefore to changes in neurotransmitter levels.
MethodsGenotyping of 150 paricipants with Bipolar Disorder and 78 healthy controls with the Illumina GWAS chip Omniexpress 1.1. Hypothesis driven extraction of ARNTL SNPs with the software PLINK. Statistical analysis with Chi square test with SPSS.
ResultsPatients with Bipolar Disorder differ significantly in ARNTL genotypes compared to healthy controls. Details are presented during the poster session.
DiscussionCircadian rhythms seem to play an important pathogenetic mechanism in Bipolar Disorder.

A number of laser facilities coming online all over the world promise the capability of high-power laser experiments with shot repetition rates between 1 and 10 Hz. Target availability and technical issues related to the interaction environment could become a bottleneck for the exploitation of such facilities. In this paper, we report on target needs for three different classes of experiments: dynamic compression physics, electron transport and isochoric heating, and laser-driven particle and radiation sources. We also review some of the most challenging issues in target fabrication and high repetition rate operation. Finally, we discuss current target supply strategies and future perspectives to establish a sustainable target provision infrastructure for advanced laser facilities.
Effect of a plant sterol-enriched spread on biomarkers of endothelial dysfunction and low-grade inflammation in hypercholesterolaemic subjects

Plant sterols (PS) lower LDL-cholesterol, an established risk factor for CHD. Endothelial dysfunction and low-grade inflammation are two important features in the development of atherosclerosis. Whether PS affect biomarkers of endothelial function and low-grade inflammation is not well studied. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of regular intake of PS on biomarkers of endothelial dysfunction and low-grade inflammation. In a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study, which was primarily designed to investigate the effect of PS intake on vascular function (clinicaltrials.gov: NCT01803178), 240 hypercholesterolaemic but otherwise healthy men and women consumed a low-fat spread with added PS (3 g/d) or a placebo spread for 12 weeks. Endothelial dysfunction biomarkers (both vascular and intracellular adhesion molecules 1 and soluble endothelial-selectin) and low-grade inflammation biomarkers (C-reactive protein, serum amyloid A, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α and soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1) were measured using a multi-array detection system based on electrochemiluminescence technology. Biomarkers were combined using z-scores. Differences in changes from baseline between the PS and the placebo groups were assessed. The intake of PS did not significantly change the individual biomarkers of endothelial dysfunction and low-grade inflammation. The z-scores for endothelial dysfunction (−0·02; 95 % CI −0·15, 0·11) and low-grade inflammation (−0·04; 95 % CI −0·16, 0·07) were also not significantly changed after PS intake compared with placebo. In conclusion, biomarkers of endothelial dysfunction and low-grade inflammation were not affected by regular intake of 3 g/d PS for 12 weeks in hypercholesterolaemic men and women.

The unsteady flow past a circular disk is studied with hot-wire and microphone probes positioned in planes normal to the axis of symmetry at 3 and 9 disk diameters down-stream. Both the fluctuating velocity and pressure signals are shown to be continuously dominated by large-scale coherent motions enveloping the wake flow as a whole. This suggests narrowband two-point space correlations as an experimental tool for describing spatial coherence and phase characteristics of the basically random signals. The specific symmetry imposed by the axisymmetric boundary conditions of the disk enables a decomposition of the large-scale flow phenomena into relatively simple elementary structures or modes. The resulting azimuthal constituents are quantified in terms of their respective magnitudes and individual power spectra.
The capability of the approach to uncover characteristic features of turbulence as far as its large-scale domain is concerned is demonstrated by a comparison of the present results with certain remarkably different features found in earlier jet flow investigations: the m = 1 and m = 2 modes are found to clearly dominate in wakes whereas the m = 0 and m = 1 modes were dominant in jets in a relevant range of Strouhal numbers. These large-scale coherent structures are more than just an interesting flow phenomenon; they must have a tremendou back-reaction on rigid flow boundaries (particularly if these allow a vibrational response) and may give rise to specific feedback mechanisms.
The analysing technique proposed for studying large-scale flow phenomena injets and wakes removes part of the randomness in the turbulent signals without artificially exciting or forcing them in one way or another. No conditional sampling of the naturally occurring fluctuations is required, either. The method may be applicable to other than strictly axisymmetric flow configurations, too.
Does preoperatively administered parecoxib prevent succinylcholine-associated myalgia? A randomized, placebo-controlled trial

Summary
Background and objective: Data from several studies implicate that pre-treatment with non-selective cyclooxygenase inhibitors such as aspirin or diclofenac may decrease the incidence of postoperative succinycholine-related myalgia. We tested the influence of a preoperatively administered selective cyclooxygenase 2 inhibitor, parecoxib, on postoperative myalgia. Methods: After Ethics Committee approval, 68 patients were randomized into two groups (n = 34 each). Group 1 received parecoxib 40 mg intravenously 3 min before induction of anaesthesia, and Group 2 received saline (in a double-blinded manner). Incidence and severity of myalgia was evaluated systematically with a standardized questionnaire 24, 48 and 72 h after anaesthesia. We also the assessed the number of patients who felt limited in their activity due to myalgia. Results: Seven patients in the parecoxib-treated group complained of myalgia compared with 11 in the control group (not significant). No significant difference in the severity of myalgia or in the limitation of patients activity was found between the groups. Conclusion: Intravenous parecoxib 40 mg, when administered before induction of anaesthesia, did not reduce incidence and severity of postoperative myalgia and did not improve activity in those who suffered from myalgia.

The detection of interstellar molecules relies on the precise knowledge of spectral line positions from laboratory measurements. Technical developments of recent years have led to an extension of the accessible spectral range towards shorter wavelengths. New telescopes like SOFIA, the HIFI instrument aboard the Herschel satellite, and ALMA will be used for astrophysical observations in the terahertz region. The Cologne group has developed precise spectrometers to study molecules of astrophysical importance under laboratory conditions and to obtain characteristic spectra for their possible detection in space. We present recent results on light hydrides, carbon-chain molecules and more complex species.

Zinc-based buffer layers like ZnSe, ZnS, or wet-chemically deposited ZnO on Cu(In, Ga)(S, Se)2 absorber materials (CIGSSe) have yielded thin film solar cell efficiencies comparable to or even higher than standard CdS/CIGSSe cells. However, little is known about surface and interface properties of these novel buffer layers. In this contribution we characterize the specific chemical environment at the absorber/buffer-interface using X-ray Emission Spectroscopy (XES) and Photoelectron Spectroscopy (PES) in a complementary way. Evidence of intermixing and chemical reactions is found for different buffer materials and deposition methods.

The optical and electrical properties of InAs/GaInSb superlattice mesa photodiodes with a cutoff wavelength around 8 pim are investigated. The influence of the surface potential at the mesa sidewalls on the device properties was studied by fabricating gate-controlled diodes. At least two mechanisms determining the dark current in the reverse bias region can be identified. At high reverse biases bulk bandto- band tunneling dominates while the current at low reverse biases is most likely governed by surface effects. Bulk interband tunneling is further investigated by applying magnetic fields B up to 7 T parallel and perpendicular to the electric field E across the p-n junction.

We report on the structural characterization of InAs/(GaIn)Sb superlattices (SL) grown by solid-source molecular-beam epitaxy. SL periodicity and overall structural quality were assessed by high-resolution X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Spectroscopic ellipsometry was found to be sensitive to the (GaIn)Sb alloy composition.
