The trade war with China has cost US producers and consumers hundreds of billions of dollars since 2018. Yet relatively few US businesses took action to oppose it. This study reports the results of an elite survey experiment on business political activity toward trade policy. Researchers presented business managers with information about the input costs of the new tariffs to their bottom line—information that most subjects acknowledged that they lacked—and invited them to take political action to express support or opposition to these tariffs. The results suggest that the novel information on economic costs did not significantly increase managers’ propensity to contact members of Congress, donate to political campaigns, sign petitions, or join social media groups. We also found that the firm’s political culture (liberal or conservative) did not significantly influence the effectiveness of the treatment. However, descriptive analysis showed that firm political culture was strongly related to the company’s support for the trade war, suggesting that these preexisting political beliefs were resistant to new information provided in our experiment even if that information could affect the company’s bottom line.

Integrating the predictive processing framework into our understanding of motivation offers promising avenues for theoretical development, while shedding light on the computational processes underlying motivated behavior. Here we decompose expected free energy into intrinsic value (i.e., epistemic affordance) and extrinsic value (i.e., instrumental affordance) to provide insights into how individuals adapt to and interact with their environment.

In this article, we delve into the optimal scheduling challenge for many-to-many on-orbit services, taking into account variations in target accessibility. The scenario assumes that each servicing satellite is equipped with singular or multiple service capabilities, tasked with providing on-orbit services to multiple targets, each characterised by distinct service requirements. The mission’s primary objective is to determine the optimal service sequence, orbital transfer duration and on-orbit service time for each servicing satellite, with the ultimate goal of minimising the overall cost. We frame the optimal scheduling dilemma as a time-related colored travelling salesman problem (TRCTSP) and propose an enhanced firefly algorithm (EFA) to address it. Finally, experimental results across various scenarios validate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed algorithm. The principal contribution of this work lies in the modeling and resolution of the many-to-many on-orbit service challenge, considering accessibility variations — a domain that has, until now, remained unexplored.

Considering a dyad as a dynamic system whose current state depends on its past state has allowed researchers to investigate whether and how partners influence each other. Some researchers have also focused on how differences between dyads in their interaction patterns are related to other differences between them. A promising approach in this area is the model that was proposed by Gottman and Murray, which is based on nonlinear coupled difference equations. In this paper, it is shown that their model is a special case of the threshold autoregressive (TAR) model. As a consequence, we can make use of existing knowledge about TAR models with respect to parameter estimation, model alternatives and model selection. We propose a new estimation procedure and perform a simulation study to compare it to the estimation procedure developed by Gottman and Murray. In addition, we include an empirical example based on interaction data of three dyads.

Aiming at the problem of fast and consensus obstacle avoidance of multiple unmanned aerial systems in undirected network, a multi-quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicles UAVs (QUAVs) finite-time consensus obstacle avoidance algorithm is proposed. In this paper, multi-QUAVs establish communication through the leader-following method, and the formation is led by the leader to fly to the target position automatically and avoid obstacles autonomously through the improved artificial potential field method. The finite-time consensus protocol controls multi-QUAVs to form a desired formation quickly, considering the existence of communication and input delay, and rigorously proves the convergence of the proposed protocol. A trajectory segmentation strategy is added to the improved artificial potential field method to reduce trajectory loss and improve the task execution efficiency. The simulation results show that multi-QUAVs can be assembled to form the desired formation quickly, and the QUAV formation can avoid obstacles and maintain the formation unchanged while avoiding obstacles.

Folate metabolism is involved in the development and progression of various cancers. We investigated the association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in folate-metabolising genes and their interactions with serum folate concentrations with overall survival (OS) and liver cancer-specific survival (LCSS) of newly diagnosed hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. We detected the genotypes of six SNP in three genes related to folate metabolism: methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), 5-methyltetrahydrofolate-homocysteine methyltransferase reductase (MTRR) and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate-homocysteine methyltransferase (MTR). Cox proportional hazard models were used to calculate multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HR) and 95 % CI. This analysis included 970 HCC patients with genotypes of six SNP, and 864 of them had serum folate measurements. During a median follow-up of 722 d, 393 deaths occurred, with 360 attributed to HCC. In the fully-adjusted models, the MTRR rs1801394 polymorphism was significantly associated with OS in additive (per G allele: HR = 0·84, 95 % CI: 0·71, 0·99), co-dominant (AG v. AA: HR = 0·77; 95 % CI: 0·62, 0·96) and dominant (AG + GG v. AA: HR = 0·78; 95 % CI: 0·63, 0·96) models. Carrying increasing numbers of protective alleles was linked to better LCSS (HR10–12 v. 2–6 = 0·70; 95 % CI: 0·49, 1·00) and OS (HR10–12 v. 2–6 = 0·67; 95 % CI: 0·47, 0·95). Furthermore, we observed significant interactions on both multiplicative and additive scales between serum folate levels and MTRR rs1801394 polymorphism. Carrying the variant G allele of the MTRR rs1801394 is associated with better HCC prognosis and may enhance the favourable association between higher serum folate levels and improved survival among HCC patients.

The robots of tomorrow should be endowed with the ability to adapt to drastic and unpredicted changes in their environment and interactions with humans. Such adaptations, however, cannot be boundless: the robot must stay trustworthy. So, the adaptations should not be just a recovery into a degraded functionality. Instead, they must be true adaptations: the robot must change its behaviour while maintaining or even increasing its expected performance and staying at least as safe and robust as before. The RoboSAPIENS project will focus on autonomous robotic software adaptations and will lay the foundations for ensuring that they are carried out in an intrinsically trustworthy, safe and efficient manner, thereby reconciling open-ended self-adaptation with safety by design. RoboSAPIENS will transform these foundations into ‘first time right’-design tools and platforms and will validate and demonstrate them.

This study applies a comprehensive bioecological perspective to address a significant gap in the childhood adversity literature by employing latent profile analysis to examine the impact of diverse combinations of early childhood adversities and protective factors on adolescent psychosocial and behavioral outcomes. Drawing from the United Kingdom’s Millennium Cohort Study (N = 19,444), we identified eight unique profiles of early childhood adversity and protective factors. These profiles provide a nuanced understanding of adversity combinations and allow for differentiation between groups with similar profiles. Latent profile membership was a significant predictor of all adolescent outcome variables, indicating that profiles differed significantly from one another on psychosocial and behavioral outcomes (Wald values ranged from 10.10–623.22; p < .001). Some findings support the cumulative risk model, indicating that exposure to multiple early adversities increases the likelihood of adverse outcomes. However, we also found that specific adversities, such as parental psychopathology, parental alcohol use, and neighborhood deprivation, uniquely impact adolescent outcomes. This study highlights the necessity for tailored interventions and policies to support children with distinct early life experiences, emphasizing the importance of addressing both cumulative and specific adversities at multiple levels to prevent psychosocial and behavioral problems in adolescence.

A simplified configuration was developed to facilitate the mode transition process within an over-under Turbine-Based Combined Cycle (TBCC) inlet. Leveraging dynamic mesh technology, an unsteady numerical simulation of the mode transition was conducted, emphasising the flow characteristics of the mode transition and the impact of key similarity criteria numbers. The findings indicate that at an incoming Mach number of 2.0, the mode transition is paired with a continuous alteration in the capture mass flow of the high-speed duct. This continual change instigates the inlet unstarting, with subsequent flow characteristics being contingent on the historical effect, exhibiting a degree of hysteresis characteristics. When the scale effect is considered, it is observed that a larger model scale results in higher Reynolds (Re) and Strouhal (St) numbers. This directly contributes to a notable delay in the unstart moment, a decrease in the unstart interval, and an enlargement of the hysteresis loop. An examination of control variables reveals that the Re number marginally influences mode transition characteristics, while the St number’s effect constitutes approximately 90% of the scale effect. This conclusively demonstrates that the St number is the predominant similarity criterion number in the mode transition process.

Penicillin allergy delabeling may benefit antimicrobial stewardship (AS). Cost of initial penicillin treatments following risk-stratified inpatient delabeling were compared to two hypothetical treatment regimens if delabeling had not occurred: (1) AS-guided and (2) Common Treatment. Penicillin allergy delabeling improved antimicrobial spectrum index, was cost-neutral, and averted unnecessary penicillin desensitizations.

Cross-linguistic interactions are the hallmark of bilingual development. Theoretical perspectives highlight the key role of cross-linguistic distances and language structure in literacy development. Despite the strong theoretical assumptions, the impact of such bilingualism factors in heritage-language speakers remains elusive given high variability in children's heritage-language experiences. A longitudinal inquiry of heritage-language learners of structurally distinct languages – Spanish–English and Chinese–English bilinguals (N = 181, Mage = 7.57, measured 1.5 years apart) aimed to fill this gap. Spanish–English bilinguals showed stronger associations between morphological awareness skills across their two languages, across time, likely reflecting cross-linguistic similarities in vocabulary and lexical morphology between Spanish and English. Chinese–English bilinguals, however, showed stronger associations between morphological and word reading skills in English, likely reflecting the critical role of morphology in spoken and written Chinese word structure. The findings inform theories of literacy by uncovering the mechanisms by which bilingualism factors influence child literacy development.

The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system for composite vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) is a complex, highly coupled, and nonlinear system which is sensitive to external disturbances and model uncertainties. The composite VTOL UAV system consists of a multi-rotor section and a fixed-wing section. To improve observation accuracy, the compensation function observer (CFO) uses a new structure that includes velocity information. The CFO is utilised to estimate the uncertainty and the external disturbances of the system model, which performs superior estimation accuracy compared to the extended state observer (ESO). In the modeling process of the VTOL UAV, the aerodynamic moment is calculated by means of the cross-product operation of force and force arm, which solves the problem of over-reliance on aerodynamic parameters in the traditional modeling approach. The controlled object is refined by CFO, and model compensation control (MCC) is used to realise the velocity and attitude control of the composite VTOL. The numerical simulation of MATLAB/Simulink and hardware-in-loop simulation (HIL) of Rflysim were implemented, and which were used to compare the MCC, active disturbance rejection control (ADRC), and proportion integration differentiation (PID). The simulation results confirm the superiority of MCC in controlling composite VTOL UAVs in terms of anti-disturbance and tracking speed.

Multiple-long term conditions (MLTCs), also known as multimorbidity, are commonly defined as the presence of two or more long-term medical conditions in one individual(1). More than half of all adults over 60 years are affected by multimorbidity worldwide(2) and its increasing prevalence demands a shift in focus for research and healthcare towards multiple clusters of disease, rather than single conditions(3).

Current epidemiological evidence on diet as preventative lifestyle factor in relation to MLTCs is limited(4). Therefore we reviewed the existing evidence to summarise methods of assessment of diet and multimorbidity measure to identify further research needs in a scoping review.

Medline, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science and Scopus were searched systematically following the methodological approach for scoping reviews by PRISMA. The protocol was published on Open Science Framework under DOI10.17605/OSF.IO/9FP5D. The search yielded a total of 10,937 results. After de-duplication, title and abstract screening and a final inclusion round of in-text screening by two reviewers, 53 articles met the inclusion criteria. Observational studies were included if they examined the relationship between any dietary factor and the prevalence/or development of MLTCs in community-dwelling adults.

Publication dates of included research papers ranged from 2014 to 2023, with over half of studies published in the last three years. There was high variability between dietary assessment methods used: in the majority of studies (n=21, 39.6%) fruit and vegetable intake was the only diet-related variable reported. A priori diet quality scores were used in n=15 (28.3%) studies and n=6 (11.3%) studies used a posteriori approaches to identify dietary patterns, n=11 used other methods (20.8%). Only n=3 (5.7%) studies also focussed on micronutrients. MLTCs were generally defined as presence of ≥2 chronic conditions by most papers, however the number of qualifying conditions ranged from 2-60 conditions.

Overall, 60.4% (n=32) of studies were cross-sectional with various dietary components and patterns showing either mixed results, (n=10, 31.3%), no association (n=5, 15.6%) or inverse associations (n=12, 37.5%), i.e. higher diet score/adherence/consumption of diet components was associated with lower MLTCs, to positive relationships e.g. individuals with MLTCs consumed higher intakes of fruit and vegetables (n=5, 15.6%). Varying results were also found in longitudinal studies (n= 21, 39.6%). Some studies found inverse associations (n=8, 38.1%) i.e. higher adherence/more healthy food consumption was associated with lower MLTCs. However, other studies showed either no significant association (n=4, 19%), mixed results (n=5, 23.8%) or positive associations (n=4, 19.1%).

The evidence relating MLTCs to dietary intakes is relatively recent with most studies being reported within the last 3 years. Studies showed various outcomes and more detailed information is needed on the effect of dietary patterns and their compounds on the prevalence and development of multimorbidity. Following a standardized method of multimorbidity-quantification is highly important.

Background: Over the past decade, worldwide stroke incidence has been increasing among young adults (≤65years), which has implications during the most dynamic period of their life. There is a dearth of research exploring young adults stroke patients’ experiences, healthy lifestyle habits, preferences, and recommendations for brain care-related initiatives. The study aimed to gain knowledge and a deeper understanding of young adult stroke patients’ experiences, lifestyle habits, and support needs for brain care-related education and interventions. Methods: A descriptive qualitative study was used. Participants who took part in the quantitative phase of a larger mixed methods study (n=103 that expressed an interest in the qualitative phase, were invited to take part in semi-structured focus groups. Simultaneous data collection and analysis are being conducted. Data are being analyzed using inductive thematic analysis outlined by Braun and Clarke (2006). Results: Findings will be available by May 20, 2024. Conclusions: Study findings will be essential to 1) mobilize an understanding of young adult stroke patients’ lived experience; 2) reconceptualize the current model of stroke care and services that is traditionally geared towards older adults; and 3) inform the development of brain care-related education and interventions to meet the unique needs, priorities, and preferences of young adult stroke patients.

Background: Medically refractory pediatric epilepsy is a disorder that can cause significant financial and physical burden. Although multiple treatments exist, cost-effectiveness remains unclear. We conducted a systematic review to assess cost-effectiveness of treatments for medically refractory pediatric epilepsy and to summarize key issues and areas for further inquiry. Methods: We searched MEDLINE and 6 other databases up to July 2022. We included partial and full economic evaluations (EEs) on treatments for medically refractory pediatric epilepsy. Pairs of reviewers independently screened the literature, extracted data, and assessed quality using the 24-item Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards (CHEERS) checklist. We extracted data on study characteristics, health outcomes, model design, costs, and treatment characteristics. Results: We identified 37 eligible studies for analysis, 19 of which were partial EEs and 18 were full EEs. Study quality, outcomes reported, treatment comparators, and factors included in cost calculations were common influential factors in study results. Vagus nerve stimulation and cannabinoid oil were the most consistently cost-effective, in 6 of 7 and 1 of 2 studies, respectively. Other treatments were inconsistently cost-effective. Conclusions: The cost-effectiveness of treatments for medically refractory pediatric epilepsy was not definitive. Consistency in study design and inputs is necessary for future comparison of epilepsy treatment.

The EU has introduced a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which extends its carbon prices to imported products in some sectors. Increasingly considered by other countries, such border carbon adjustments (BCAs) are facing a global backlash against the lack of consideration of the adverse impacts on developing countries and particularly, least developed countries (LDCs). This article first argues that small overall import volumes support the conclusion that exempting or lessening BCA requirements from LDCs would not undermine developed countries' climate-related objectives in practical terms. An economic analysis of EU and UK trade in relation to a CBAM supports this assertion. However, legally, such an exemption or development-based preferential treatment is difficult under existing multilateral trade rules and jurisprudence, owing to the legal characterization and objectives of BCAs; their interaction with existing special and differential treatment (SDT) provisions; and complexity of available policy options. We thus highlight the gap between normative aims of SDT provisions to support development, and current WTO law and jurisprudence which expose WTO members providing preferential treatment to allegations of discrimination. With increasing unilateral climate action, an inability to integrate SDT more meaningfully into WTO non-discrimination frameworks risks further weakening of international cooperation on climate and trade.

Diets low in vegetables are a main contributor to the health burden experienced by Australians living in rural communities. Given the ubiquity of smartphones and access to the Internet, digital interventions may offer an accessible delivery model for a dietary intervention in rural communities. However, no digital interventions to address low vegetable intake have been co-designed with adults living in rural areas(1). This research aims to describe the co-design of a digital intervention to improve vegetable intake with rural community members and research partners. Active participants in the co-design process were adults ≥18 years living in three rural Australian communities (total n = 57) and research partners (n = 4) representing three local rural governments and one peak non-government health organisation. An iterative co-design process(2) was undertaken to understand the needs (pre-design phase) and ideas (generative phase) of the target population through eight online workshops and a 21-item online community survey between July and December 2021. Prioritisation methods were used to help workshop participants identify the ‘Must-have, Should-have, Could-have, and Won’t-have or will not have right now’ (MoSCoW) features and functions of the digital intervention. Workshops were transcribed and inductively analysed using NVivo. Convergent and divergent themes were identified between the workshops and community survey to identify how to implement the digital intervention in the community. Consensus was reached on a concept for a digital intervention that addressed individual and food environment barriers to vegetable intake, specific to rural communities. Implementation recommendations centred on i) food literacy approaches to improve skills via access to vegetable-rich recipes and healthy eating resources, ii) access to personalisation options and behaviour change support, and iii) improving the community food environment by providing information on and access to local food initiatives. Rural-dwelling adults expressed preferences for personalised intervention features that can enhance food literacy and engagement with community food environments. This co-design process will inform the development of a prototype (evaluation phase) and feasibility testing (post-design phase) of this intervention. The resulting intervention is anticipated to reduce barriers and support enablers, across individual and community levels, to facilitate higher consumption of vegetables among rural Australians. These outcomes have the potential to contribute to improved wellbeing in the short term and reduced chronic disease risk in the long term, decreasing public health inequities.

In this paper, we investigate the attitude manoeuver planning and tracking control of the flexible satellite equipped with a coilable mast. Due to its flexible beamlike structure, the coilable mast experiences bending and torsional modal vibrations in multi-direction. The complex nonlinear coupling and other external disturbances significantly impact the achievement of high-precision attitude control. To overcome these challenges, a robust attitude tracking controller is proposed for easy implementation by the Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS). The controller consists of a disturbance compensator, feedforward controller and output feedback controller. The compensator, based on a Nonlinear Disturbance Observer (NDO), effectively compensates for the cluster disturbances caused by vibrations, environmental factors and parameter perturbations. The feedforward controller tracks the desired path in the nominal satellite model. Furthermore, the output feedback controller enables large-angle manoeuver control of the satellite and evaluates the suppression effect of the controlled output on the observation error of cluster disturbances used the ${L_2}$-gain. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed controller successfully achieves high-precision attitude tracking control during large-angle manoeuvering.
