Galaxy Zoo is an online project to classify morphological features in extra-galactic imaging surveys with public voting. In this paper, we compare the classifications made for two different surveys, the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) imaging survey and a part of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS), in the equatorial fields of the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. Our aim is to cross-validate and compare the classifications based on different imaging quality and depth. We find that generally the voting agrees globally but with substantial scatter, that is, substantial differences for individual galaxies. There is a notable higher voting fraction in favour of ‘smooth’ galaxies in the DESI+zoobot classifications, most likely due to the difference between imaging depth. DESI imaging is shallower and slightly lower resolution than KiDS and the Galaxy Zoo images do not reveal details such as disc features and thus are missed in the zoobot training sample. We check against expert visual classifications and find good agreement with KiDS-based Galaxy Zoo voting. We reproduce the results from Porter-Temple+ (2022), on the dependence of stellar mass, star formation, and specific star formation on the number of spiral arms. This shows that once corrected for redshift, the DESI Galaxy Zoo and KiDS Galaxy Zoo classifications agree well on population properties. The zoobot cross-validation increases confidence in its ability to compliment Galaxy Zoo classifications and its ability for transfer learning across surveys.
Associations between childhood trauma, neurodevelopment, alcohol use disorder (AUD), and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are understudied during adolescence.
Methods
Using 1652 participants (51.75% female, baseline Mage = 14.3) from the Collaborative Study of the Genetics of Alcoholism, we employed latent growth curve models to (1) examine associations of childhood physical, sexual, and non-assaultive trauma (CPAT, CSAT, and CNAT) with repeated measures of alpha band EEG coherence (EEGc), and (2) assess whether EEGc trajectories were associated with AUD and PTSD symptoms. Sex-specific models accommodated sex differences in trauma exposure, AUD prevalence, and neural development.
Results
In females, CSAT was associated with higher mean levels of EEGc in left frontocentral (LFC, ß = 0.13, p = 0.01) and interhemispheric prefrontal (PFI, ß = 0.16, p < 0.01) regions, but diminished growth in LFC (ß = −0.07, p = 0.02) and PFI (ß = −0.07, p = 0.02). In males, CPAT was associated with lower mean levels (ß = −0.17, p = 0.01) and increased growth (ß = 0.11, p = 0.01) of LFC EEGc. Slope of LFC EEGc was inversely associated with AUD symptoms in females (ß = −1.81, p = 0.01). Intercept of right frontocentral and PFI EEGc were associated with AUD symptoms in males, but in opposite directions. Significant associations between EEGc and PTSD symptoms were also observed in trauma-exposed individuals.
Conclusions
Childhood assaultive trauma is associated with changes in frontal alpha EEGc and subsequent AUD and PTSD symptoms, though patterns differ by sex and trauma type. EEGc findings may inform emerging treatments for PTSD and AUD.
Involving participants in the design of clinical trials should improve the overall success of a study. For this to occur, streamlined mechanisms are needed to connect the populations potentially impacted by a given study or health topic with research teams in order to inform trial design in a meaningful and timely manner. To address this need, we developed an innovative mechanism called the “ResearchMatch Expert Advice Tool” that quickly obtains volunteer perspectives from populations with specific health conditions or lived experiences using the national recruitment registry, ResearchMatch. This tool does not ask volunteers to participate in the trial but allows for wider community feedback to be gathered and translated into actionable recommendations used to inform the study’s design. We describe early use cases that shaped the current Expert Advice Tool workflow, how results from this tool were incorporated and implemented by studies, and feedback from volunteers and study teams regarding the tool’s usefulness. Additionally, we present a set of lessons learned during the development of the Expert Advice Tool that can be used by other recruitment registries seeking to obtain volunteer feedback on study design and operations.
We are a/r/tographers who work in pre- and in- service teacher education in Australian universities. We write this chapter for researchers interested in encountering and conducting speculative creative inquiry. Data analysis in speculative a/r/tography is an active doing coupled with quiet reflection in the space of ‘not yet’. It is ‘less about discovering something pre- existing and more about constructing knowledge through the process itself ‘ (Reason, 2018, p 49). Doing data this way advances our understanding of small data via closeto- practice, aesthetically oriented, process- driven, human- scale analyses. This approach to data resists data imperialism and is decolonial, post- human, and activist in its politics – making way for a multiplicity of ontologies, knowledge systems, and methodologies. Our creative methods are informed by an interplay of methodology and pedagogy that contiguously respond to relational understandings of being an artist/ researcher/ theorist and the many creative (in- )betweens that being a practitioner affords. In this sense, we dance between theory and practice, whereby theory becomes data as much as the artefacts created in and through the a/ r/ tistic practice. As collaborators, we explore complex problems with similarly curious colleagues and students, bringing together multiple perspectives, sites, and spaces to assemble meaning (MacDonald et al, 2022). This is an important place to begin this chapter on creative data work because it positions where and how we do speculative a/ r/ tography and what the opportunities might be as you begin to play within creative possibilities.
A/ r/ tography has its roots in education (see LeBlanc and Irwin, 2019). However, our particular iteration of a/ r/ tography transcends the disciplinary boundaries of education, living and breathing across speculative inquiry, creative methods, and creative data analysis. A/ r/ tography renders its practices in ways that enable thinking with and doing through iterative and looping actions: contiguity, living inquiry, openings, metaphor/ metonymy, reverberation and resonance, excess and absence, and gaze (Coleman, 2017). Our rendering of a/ r/ tography as speculative emphasises inquiry as being complex, imaginative, playful, and risky. Speculative a/ r/ tography enacts possibility thinking, ‘designerly’ ways of knowing and thinking, prototyping and failure in novel ways that other forms of a/ r/ tography might not.
Sharks are scarce in much of the Caribbean due to widespread depletion. Trinidad and Tobago, in the southern Caribbean, is a shark meat consumer and international exporter of dried shark fins. Despite limited fisheries management there is a small Marine Protected Area (MPA; 7 km2) in urbanised southwest Tobago, but its effect on sharks and rays (elasmobranchs) is unknown. The rural northeast is a recently designated UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve with a significant marine component and plans for a large MPA, but no baseline data for elasmobranchs exist. Given the local importance of elasmobranchs and a newly drafted Sustainable Shark and Ray Management Plan, we used baited remote underwater video stations within a 40 m depth contour at 270 randomly generated points around Tobago to: (i) establish a baseline of species richness and relative abundance, (ii) investigate the influence of season, habitat relief, depth and water temperature on relative abundance, and (iii) investigate spatial variation in relative abundance. Caribbean reef sharks, nurse sharks, and southern stingrays were observed at all sites, the latter two more frequently in the urbanised southwest. Shark diversity was unexpectedly high in the northeast, driven by rarer species (sharpnose, smoothhound, tiger, scalloped hammerhead, great hammerhead) only observed there. Habitat relief, depth and season likely influence relative abundance of elasmobranchs around Tobago, but research is needed to elucidate species-level effects. Shark species richness in northeast Tobago is high for the Caribbean, warranting research attention, while the larger MPA presents an opportunity to strengthen elasmobranch management.
Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) allows for tracking participant responses across multiple timepoints within the context of typical daily experiences. This study used EMA delivered via smartwatches to investigate dynamic associations between older adults’ fluctuations in cognitive performance as measured by an n-back test and self-reports of current internal (i.e., mental sharpness, fatigue, stress) and external (i.e., environmental distractions, time of day) contextual states over seven days. We hypothesized that 1) cognitive test fluctuations throughout the week would be meaningful beyond average cognitive test scores and 2) cognitive test scores would fluctuate in response to internal and external contexts.
Participants and Methods:
Participants were 28 community-dwelling older adults recruited for a larger clinical trial assessing the influence of lifestyle factors and compensatory strategy use on cognitive health. During week one of the trial, participants received a smartwatch which sent prompts four times a day for seven consecutive days. The prompts included a 45-second one-back shape test, along with Likert-style questions about their current experience. Questions assessing participants’ internal contexts asked about participants’ experience “right now” of mental sharpness, physical fatigue, and stress. External context was assessed via the EMA prompt, “Right now my environment is distracting,” and time of day of the response.
Results:
Data was screened such that all data points outside the 7-day prompt window were removed, one participant who did not respond to any prompts was removed, and participants who responded to less than 60% of the shape test prompts were removed (n = 10). The sample used for this preliminary analysis included 17 participants (Age, M = 71.94 years; Education, M = 14 years; 88% Female; 88% White) with an average compliance of 75% (Range = 17 - 26 shape test responses) and an average shape test accuracy of > 92%. Hypothesis 1 was supported by the large fluctuations of the average cognitive test scores across timepoints (M = 24.35, Min = 16, Max = 27, SD = 2.54) and by repeated-measures ANOVA of average cognitive test scores by day (F(1,7) = 5.24, p < 0.01). Hypothesis 2: Cross-correlation lags 0 to 4 were assessed. For internal contexts, cross-correlation showed a medium correlation between mental sharpness and cognition for lags 0 (r = 0.46) and 1 (r = 0.4); a small to medium correlation between physical fatigue and cognition for lags 0 (r = -0.51) and 1 (r = -0.31); and no correlation between stress and cognition (r < 0.2). For external contexts, cross-correlation revealed no correlation between environmental distraction and cognition (r < 0.3), and repeated measures ANOVA revealed no effect of time of day on cognition scores (p > 0.05).
Conclusions:
Older adults’ cognitive performance on an n-back shape test varied over time with internal contextual states. Cognitive performance was positively associated with feelings of mental sharpness and negatively associated with physical fatigue. Current external environmental distractions and time of day were less influential on cognitive performance. As more data is collected, influences of individual fluctuations in cognitive performance will be investigated.
Pediatric cancer and cancer-related treatments may disrupt brain development and place survivors at risk for long term problems with cognitive functions. Processing efficiency has been operationalized as a nuanced cognitive skill that reflects both processing speed (PS) and working memory (WM) abilities and is sensitive to neurobiological disruption. Pediatric cancer survivors are at risk for processing efficiency deficits; however, a thorough characterization of processing efficiency skills across pediatric primary central nervous system (CNS) tumor and non-CNS cancer survivors has not yet been reported.
Participants and Methods:
Participants were selected from a mixed retrospective clinical database of pediatric cancer survivors (Total n=160; primary CNS tumor n=33; Non-CNS n=127). Univariate analyses were conducted to examine differences in processing efficiency mean scores (t-tests) and percent impairment (scores >1 SD below mean; chi-squared tests) between the total sample and normative sample, and across groups (CNS vs. Non-CNS). Multiple linear regressions were utilized to evaluate the relationships between additional risk factors, including biological sex, age at diagnosis, time since treatment, and socioeconomic status, and processing efficiency outcomes.
Results:
The total sample obtained lower scores on WM (M=90.83, SD=13.35) and PS (M=88.86, SD=14.38) measures than normative samples (M=100, SD=15), p < 0.001. Greater percentage of pediatric cancer survivors demonstrated impairment across all processing efficiency measures (24.8-38.1%) than normative samples (15.9%), p < 0.001. Regarding group differences, the CNS group obtained lower mean WM (M=84.85, SD =11.77) and PS (M=80, SD=14.18) scores than the Non-CNS group (WM M=92.39, SD=13.32; PS M=91.16, SD=13.56), p < 0.001. Rates of impairment between groups only differed for PS scores, with 63.6% of the CNS group and 31.5% of the non-CNS group demonstrating impairment, p < 0.001. Primary CNS tumor cancer type and male biological sex emerged as the only significant risk factors that predicted processing efficiency skills, with male sex predicting lower scores on PS (ß=8.91 p<.001) and semantic fluency (ß=7.59, p=.007).
Conclusions:
These findings indicate that both pediatric primary CNS tumor and non-CNS cancer survivors exhibit substantial weaknesses in processing efficiency skills after treatment. While both groups demonstrated deficits compared to normative samples, the CNS group was more susceptible to PS impairments than non-CNS group. A basic initial study of the relationships between risk factors and processing efficiency skills revealed that primary CNS cancer was a predictor of lower performance on working memory and processing speed measures, while male biological sex was a significant risk factor for worse performance on processing speed and semantic fluency measures. Continued focus on the construct of processing efficiency in pediatric cancer survivors is warranted. Applying a standardized approach to assessing and communicating this nuanced cognitive skill could contribute to advancing both clinical practice and outcomes research of pediatric cancer survivors.
Youth with sickle cell disease (SCD) are at increased risk of neurocognitive difficulties with and without neurological complications. Research has identified disease-related, socioeconomic, and sociodemographic risk factors as independently having significant associations with brain physiology for youth with SCD. Notably, sleep has a profound effect on youth’s neurocognitive abilities including learning, executive function, memory, attention, and processing speed. Furthermore, youth with SCD are at an increased risk for poor sleep measured by self-report questionnaires and by polysomnography (PSG). Within the SCD literature, only a few studies have examined the relationship between sleep and cognition. Of these, the majority examined individuals with SCD and comorbid sleep disorder diagnoses. The aim of this study is to identify associations between subjective sleep measures and neurocognitive outcomes in youth with SCD.
Participants and Methods:
This study investigated a cohort of 24 youth with SCD (ages 9-16, 11 males, 13 females; HbSS [63%], HbSB+ [8%], HbSC [21%], HbSB0 [8%]) who received sleep questionnaires and a neuropsychological evaluation. Exclusion criteria included a history of neurological disorder (e.g., overt stroke, seizures, or moyamoya disease) or prescribed psychotropic medication. Sleep questionnaires measuring sleep disturbance (e.g., sleep onset, sleep continuity, and sleep quality) and sleep-related impairments (e.g., daytime sleepiness, sleepiness interference with concentration, and difficulty with activities of daily living skills) were collected. Executive function, working memory, processing speed, and verbal comprehension measures were assessed. Demographics and disease-related risk factors were analyzed individually from medical records.
Results:
All analyses were controlled for age, the time between neuropsychological testing and sleep questionnaires, SCD genotype, and sex. Partial correlations were conducted to explore associations with neurocognitive outcomes. Verbal comprehension was significantly correlated with sleep disturbance (r= -.673, p=.001). Multiple linear regressions revealed that sleep disturbance significantly predicts verbal comprehension (ß= -.572, p=.003). Specifically, verbal comprehension decreased by 4.4 standard points for every one-point increase in sleep disturbance. Additionally, total sleep problems significantly predicted working memory (ß=-.414, p=.044) and processing speed (ß= -.411, p= .046). Specifically, working memory decreased by 3.5 standard points while processing speed decreased by 3.3 standard points for every one-point increase in total sleep problems reported. Sleep parameters did not significantly predict executive function.
Conclusions:
Results support the association between poor sleep and neurocognitive difficulty in youth with SCD. Three of the participants in this study received a PSG, which further demonstrates the importance of the current findings. This study serves to identify potential risk factors for neurocognitive deficits and provides potential methods for identifying youth with SCD who may need to be referred for a PSG assessment. Research should replicate these findings with increased sample sizes including utilizing PSG and investigating neurobiological effects. Findings may inform future screening tools, treatment approaches, and advanced cognitive initiatives and resources for this population.
While loss of insight into one’s cognitive impairment (anosognosia) is a feature in Alzheimer’s disease dementia, less is known about memory self-awareness in cognitively unimpaired (CU) older adults or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or factors that may impact self-awareness. Locus of control, specifically external locus of control, has been linked to worse cognitive/health outcomes, though little work has examined locus of control as it relates to self-awareness of memory functioning or across cognitive impairment status. Therefore, we examined associations between locus of control and memory self-awareness and whether MCI status impacted these associations.
Participants and Methods:
Participants from the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) study (mean age=73.51; 76% women; 26% Black/African American) were classified as CU (n=2177) or MCI (amnestic n=313; non-amnestic n=170) using Neuropsychological Criteria. A memory composite score measured objective memory performance and the Memory Functioning Questionnaire measured subjective memory. Memory self-awareness was defined as objective memory minus subjective memory, with positive values indicating overreporting of memory difficulties relative to actual performance (hypernosognosia) and negative values indicating underreporting (hyponosognosia). Internal (i.e., personal skills/attributes dictate life events) and external (i.e., environment/others dictate life events) locus of control scores came from the Personality in Intellectual Aging Contexts Inventory. General linear models, adjusting for age, education, sex/gender, depressive symptoms, general health, and vocabulary examined the effects of internal and external locus of control on memory self-awareness and whether MCI status moderated these associations.
Results:
Amnestic and non-amnestic MCI participants reported lower internal and higher external locus of control than CU participants. There was a main effect of MCI status on memory self-awareness such that amnestic MCI participants showed the greatest degree of hyponosognosia/underreporting, followed by non-amnestic MCI, and CU participants slightly overreported their memory difficulties. While, on average, participants were fairly accurate at reporting their degree of memory difficulty, internal locus of control was negatively associated with self-awareness such that higher internal locus of control was associated with greater underreporting (ß=-.127, 95% CI [-.164, -.089], p<.001). MCI status did not moderate this association. External locus of control was positively associated with self-awareness such that higher external locus of control was associated with greater hypernosonosia/overreporting (ß=.259, 95% CI [.218, .300], p<.001). Relative to CU, amnestic, but not non-amnestic, MCI showed a stronger association between external locus of control and memory self-awareness. Specifically, higher external locus of control was associated with less underreporting of cognitive difficulties in amnestic MCI (ß=.107, 95% CI [.006, .208], p=.038).
Conclusions:
In CU participants, higher external locus of control was associated with greater hypernosognosia/overreporting. In amnestic MCI, the lower external locus of control associations with greater underreporting of objective cognitive difficulties suggests that perhaps reduced insight in some people with MCI may result in not realizing the need for external supports, and therefore not asking for help from others. Alternatively, in amnestic participants with greater external locus of control, perhaps the environmental cues/feedback translate to greater accuracy in their memory self-perceptions. Longitudinal analyses are needed to determine how memory self-awareness is related to future cognitive declines.
Executive functioning (EF) and socioeconomic status (SES) are associated with functional outcomes (adaptive functioning and academic achievement) in healthy controls and pediatric populations with executive dysfunction. However, these relationships have yet to be investigated in survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a population with EF impairment resulting from disease and treatment characteristics. The objective of this study was to examine the associations of functional outcomes with EF and SES (neighborhood-specific variables and academic support) in survivors of childhood ALL.
Participants and Methods:
Forty-four participants (38.6% female, 72.7% non-Hispanic White, ages 6-17) previously diagnosed with low-risk or standard-risk pre-B cell ALL and treated with chemotherapy-only were included. Participants were evaluated on performance-based measures of EF (cognitive flexibility, verbal fluency, working memory, and processing speed) and academic achievement (word reading and math calculation), and parent-ratings of EF and adaptive functioning. All measures were expressed as T-scores with lower scores indicating better performance. Neighborhood-specific variables were based on participants’ zip codes and census block group, and included area deprivation index (ADI) and child opportunity index (COI). Lower ADI and COI indicate lesser deprivation and greater opportunity. Individualized education plan (IEP) status was used as a proxy of academic support, coded dichotomously as with or without IEP. Percentages of participants showing impairments in functional outcomes were calculated using a cutoff of > 1 SD above the normative mean. Partial correlations were conducted while controlling for age at evaluation, age at diagnosis, sex, and verbal IQ, to examine whether participants with poorer performance-based and parent-rated EF would show reduced functional outcomes. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to evaluate whether neighborhood-specific variables and IEP status would predict functional outcomes while controlling for covariates.
Results:
Compared to population norms, survivors of childhood ALL showed worse functional outcomes. Within adaptive functioning, 45.5% of participants showed impairment in activities of daily living and leadership. Adaptive functioning was significantly positively correlated with parent-rated, but not performance-based, EF (r=0.694, p<0.001). Compared to female survivors, male survivors were at increased risk for adaptive functioning difficulties (r=-0.401, p<0.05). Impairments for word reading and math calculation were 25% and 41.7%, respectively. Greater math calculation was associated with better verbal fluency (r=0.378, p<0.05) and processing speed (r=0.439, p<0.05). Older participants at evaluation (/3=-0.580, p<0.001) and those without IEP support (ß=0.465, p<0.05) showed better word reading. Lower ADI predicted better verbal fluency (ß=0.282, p=0.041), however, neighborhood-specific variables were not associated with functional outcomes.
Conclusions:
Prior findings indicate that performance-based measures and parent-ratings assess different constructs of EF. Thus, adaptive functioning may relate more to the behavioral construct of EF than its cognitive construct. Current findings also suggest that male survivors are at increased risk for reduced adaptive functioning, consistent with recent reports that male survivors of ALL are at greater risk for specific neurocognitive outcomes. Overall, functional outcomes may be more strongly related to EF than neighborhood-specific variables. Long-term goals include early screening of adaptive and academic difficulties, targeted intervention, and neuropsychological monitoring to support pediatric survivors’ neurocognitive and psychosocial development.
Interventions in environmental conservation are intended to make things better, not worse. Yet unintended and unanticipated consequences plague environmental conservation; key is how uncertainty plays out. Insights from the intellectual humility literature offer constructive strategies for coming to terms with uncertainty. Strategies such as self-distancing and self-assessment of causal complexity can be incorporated into conservation decision-making processes. Including reflection on what we know and do not know in the decision-making process potentially reduces unintended and unanticipated consequences of environmental conservation and management decisions. An important caution is not to have intellectual humility legitimate failing to act in the face of uncertainty.
Herbicide-resistant annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) has become a problem in non-arable land areas. In arable fields, P. annua is frequently of lower priority in weed control program due to the variety of control options available and the relatively modest impact on crop yield compared with other species. In Ireland, postemergence herbicides are not primarily intended for P. annua control, but some herbicides, including the acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitor mesosulfuron-methyl + iodosulfuron-methyl, exhibit P. annua activity. In this study, a suspected P. annua population (POAAN-R) that survived mesosulfuron-methyl + iodosulfuron-methyl at 0.75 of the field recommended rate was sampled from a wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) field in County Dublin, Ireland. Single-dose testing confirmed that the suspected POAAN-R had evolved resistance to mesosulfuron-methyl + iodosulfuron-methyl and, additionally, to pyroxsulam (not registered in Ireland for P. annua control), but was sensitive to clethodim, glyphosate, pendimethalin, and flufenacet. Dose–response experiments indicated that POAAN-R was more resistant (GR50 resistance index) to both mesosulfuron-methyl + iodosulfuron-methyl (47.8 times) and pyroxsulam (38.0 times) than sensitive POAAN-S, and this was associated with the mutation at Trp-574 in the ALS protein. Malathion (a cytochrome P450 [P450] inhibitor) pretreatment did not reverse POAAN-R resistance to mesosulfuron-methyl + iodosulfuron-methyl or pyroxsulam at the field rate or above. The natural inherent mutation at Ile-1781 in acetyl-CoA carboxylase protein had no effect on both POAAN-R and POAAN-S sensitivity to clethodim. The glyphosate sensitivity of POAAN-R also corresponded with no known mutation in 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase protein. Based on field histories, poor early-season weed control coupled with intensive use of mesosulfuron-methyl + iodosulfuron-methyl (often at reduced rates) has unintentionally selected for ALS inhibitor–resistant POAAN-R. This is the first report to characterize resistance in P. annua to ALS-inhibiting herbicides mesosulfuron-methyl + iodosulfuron-methyl and pyroxsulam in an arable setting. There is an opportunity to effectively control POAAN-R using herbicides, but this needs a wide-ranging and varied approach, coupled with cultural/nonchemical practices.
To assess the relationship between programme attendance in a produce prescription (PRx) programme and changes in cardiovascular risk factors.
Design:
The Georgia Food for Health (GF4H) programme provided six monthly nutrition education sessions, six weekly cooking classes and weekly produce vouchers. Participants became programme graduates attending at least 4 of the 6 of both the weekly cooking classes and monthly education sessions. We used a longitudinal, single-arm approach to estimate the association between the number of monthly programme visits attended and changes in health indicators.
Setting:
GF4H was implemented in partnership with a large safety-net health system in Atlanta, GA.
Participants:
Three hundred thirty-one participants living with or at-risk of chronic disease and food insecurity were recruited from primary care clinics. Over three years, 282 participants graduated from the programme.
Results:
After adjusting for programme site, year, participant sex, age, race and ethnicity, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program participation and household size, we estimated that each additional programme visit attended beyond four visits was associated with a 0·06 kg/m2 reduction in BMI (95 % CI –0·12, –0·01; P = 0·02), a 0·37 inch reduction in waist circumference (95 % CI –0·48, –0·27; P < 0·001), a 1·01 mmHg reduction in systolic blood pressure (95 % CI –1·45, –0·57; P < 0·001) and a 0·43 mmHg reduction in diastolic blood pressure (95 % CI –0·69, –0·17; P = 0·001).
Conclusions:
Each additional cooking and nutrition education visit attended beyond the graduation threshold was associated with modest but significant improvements in CVD risk factors, suggesting that increased engagement in educational components of a PRx programme improves health outcomes.
Clinical trials face many challenges with meeting projected enrollment and retention goals. A study’s recruitment materials and messaging convey necessary key information and therefore serve as a critical first impression with potential participants. Yet study teams often lack the resources and skills needed to develop engaging, culturally tailored, and professional-looking recruitment materials. To address this gap, the Recruitment Innovation Center recently developed a Recruitment & Retention Materials Content and Design Toolkit, which offers research teams guidance, actionable tips, resources, and customizable templates for creating trial-specific study materials. This paper seeks to describe the creation and contents of this new toolkit.

Quantitative phase analysis (QPA) of slags is complex due to the natural richness of phases and variability in sample composition. The number of phases frequently exceeds 10, with certain slag types (EAF, BOF, blends, stainless) having extreme peak overlap, making identification difficult. Another convolution arises from the variable crystallite sizes of phases found in slag, as well as the mixture of crystalline and amorphous components specific to each slag type. Additionally, polymorphs are common because of the complexity of the steelmaking and slag cooling processes, such as the cation-doped calcium aluminum silicate (Ca3Al2O6, C3A, Z = 24) supercell in LMF slag. References for these doped variants may not exist or in many cases are not known in advance, therefore it is incumbent on the analyzer to be aware of such discrepancies and choose the best available reference. All issues can compound to form a highly intricate QPA and have prevented previous methods of QPA from accurately measuring phase components in slag. QPA was performed via the internal standard method using 8 wt% ZnO as the internal standard and JADE Pro's Whole Pattern Fitting analysis. For each phase, five variables (lattice parameters, preferred orientation, scale factor, temperature factor, and crystallite size) must be accounted for during quantitation, with a specific emphasis on not refining crystallite sizes for iron oxides and trace phases as they are inclined to over-broaden and interact with the background to improve the goodness of fit (R/E value). Preliminary investigations show somewhat reliable results with the use of custom file sets created within PDF-4+ specifically targeted toward slag minerals to further regulate and normalize the analysis process. The objective of this research is to provide a standard protocol for collecting data, as well as to update methodologies and databases for QPA, to the slag community for implementation in a conventional laboratory setting. Currently, Whole Pattern Fitting “Modified” Rietveld block refinement coupled with the addition of a ZnO internal standard gives the most accurate QPA results, though further research is needed to improve upon the complex issues found in this study of the QPA of slags.
Supraglacial lakes play a central role in storing melt water, enhancing surface melt and ultimately in driving ice flow and ice shelf melt through injecting water into the subglacial environment and through facilitating fracturing. Here, we develop a model for the drainage of supraglacial lakes through the dissipation-driven incision of a surface channel. The model consists of the St Venant equations for flow in the channel, fed by an upstream lake reservoir, coupled with an equation for the evolution of channel elevation due to advection, uplift and downward melting. After reduction to a ‘stream power’-type hyperbolic model, we show that lake drainage occurs above a critical rate of water supply to the lake due to the backward migration of a shock that incises the lake seal. The critical water supply rate depends on advection velocity and uplift (or more precisely, drawdown downstream of the lake) as well as model parameters such as channel wall roughness and the parameters defining the relationship between channel cross-section and wetted perimeter. Once lake drainage does occur, it can either continue until the lake is empty, or terminate early, leading to oscillatory cycles of lake filling and draining, with the latter favoured by large lake volumes and relatively small water supply rates.
Ocean-driven melt of Antarctic ice shelves is an important control on mass loss from the ice sheet, but is complex to study due to significant variability in melt rates both spatially and temporally. Here we assess the strengths and weakness of satellite and field-based observations as tools for testing models of ice-shelf melt. We discuss how the complementary use of field, satellite and model data can be a powerful but underutilised tool for studying melt processes. Finally, we identify some community initiatives working to collate and publish coordinated melt rate datasets, which can be used in future for validating satellite-derived maps of melt and evaluating processes in numerical simulations.
Racially and ethnically minoritized populations have been historically excluded and underrepresented in research. This paper will describe best practices in multicultural and multilingual awareness-raising strategies used by the Recruitment Innovation Center to increase minoritized enrollment into clinical trials. The Passive Immunity Trial for Our Nation will be used as a primary example to highlight real-world application of these methods to raise awareness, engage community partners, and recruit diverse study participants.
