Discussing the ban on the Burqa: Third Annual ICLQ Lecture 2013

In September 2010 the French Senate approved a ban on the wearing of face-covering headgear and in April 2011 it became illegal to wear a face-covering veil or other mask in public places. This has provoked widespread international debate and has invited attention to the fundamental questions of balancing antagonistic views endorsing State secularist principles, personal liberties and religious freedom.
This will be the topic of discussion at the Third Annual International and Comparative Law Quarterly Lecture on 15th April 2013, given by Myriam Hunter-Henin, Senior Lecturer in Law at University College London, on ‘Why the French Don’t Like the Burqa: Laïcité, National Identity and Religious Freedom’. She will analyze the issues surrounding the 2010 French ban the implications thereof, in addition to undertaking a critique of this new law and examining its compatibility with the European Convention on Human Rights in a broader European context.
The Young Scholar Prize 2012 will also be awarded at the event, to Ugljesa Grusic of Nottingham University for his article, ‘Jurisdiction in Employment Matters under Brussels 1: A Reassessment’. This Prize is given by Cambridge University Press annually for the best contribution authored by a scholar aged 35 or under at the time of publication, in keeping with the mission of the journal to recognise and encourage exceptional scholarship and talent in the understanding of international and comparative law.
The welcome address for the event, which will take place at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law in London, will be given by the General Editor of the ICLQ, Professor Malcolm Evans OBE, Professor of International Law at Bristol University.
This event promises engaging debate on the topic of freedom of religion, and will not only provide an excellent insight into the issues surrounding the subject, but also a broad platform for multidisciplinary ideas. The event will be followed by a drinks reception generously sponsored by Cambridge University Press.
The Annual Lecture series was introduced in 2011 to mark the 60th anniversary of the International and Comparative Law Quarterly as the flagship publication of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law.
