Introducing the New Editors of Central European History

We are honored and eager to try to fill Monica Black’s big shoes as co-editors of Central European History, the official publication of the Central European History Society.

We hope to build on the fantastic legacy of Monica and Ken Ledford and other former editors who have made CEH the flagship journal in the field.  We want to build on CEH’s strengths in twentieth-century German history by including a wider spread of articles, not just geographically and chronologically, but also thematically.  We therefore welcome articles about the medieval and early modern periods, the nineteenth century, as well as the twentieth century.  We also envision a “big tent” Central Europe, including not only DACH but also the Low Countries, Italy, East Central Europe, and the German-speaking diaspora;  we seek articles from scholars and about topics around the world.

We especially want CEH to continue to be a venue for cutting-edge work, and therefore we welcome proposals for “special issues” (with guest editors, especially junior scholars). We envision these as an ideal genre to bring together various perspectives on difficult/complicated/controversial subjects, threading the needle between publishing one isolated article (inevitably out of context) versus pulling together an entire Sammelband

We are also honored to work with Eli Rubin (Western Michigan) and Michael Sauter (Suffolk), who will assume Mirna Zakić’s role as Associate Editors for book reviews.  All four of us are excited for CEH to carry on and expand upon Mirna’s excellent work in soliciting a wide range of book reviews, fora, and review essays. As our field continues to develop and grow, we remain committed to the idea that CEH should be the connecting point between differing methodological and theoretical approaches, areas of expertise, and modes of inquiry. CEH will remain a valuable landing-spot for researchers, teachers, and students alike. Our field is a vibrant one, and the journal will continue to reflect that dynamism.
