Expanding access: Flipping backlist titles open access

Our commitment to open access (OA) is driven by the belief that equitable knowledge-sharing benefits the entire academic community. Building on the success of our Flip it Open program, our new initiative will see a portion of our Evidence-Based Acquisition (EBA) revenue dedicated to making key backlist titles available as open access titles.

Expanding our impact

Our new initiative aims to fund the flip to open access of 100 popular backlist titles. The titles are still widely used on Cambridge Core, and their conversion to open access makes them even more accessible to researchers, educators, and students around the globe.

This initiative is designed to be seamless for our library customers. There is no need to change your acquisition behaviour or contribute extra funds. By choosing to invest in a Cambridge Full EBA, you’re already helping support this program. It’s a win-win: the titles you acquire continue to deliver value while contributing to a greater mission of democratising knowledge.

A sustainable model for open access

Unlike traditional models that typically rely on Book Processing Charges (BPCs), our approach integrates OA directly into our EBA program. This ensures that libraries, even those without dedicated OA budgets, can meaningfully contribute to making scholarly content freely available. It aligns with our shared goals of expanding access and fostering equitable dissemination of knowledge.

How it works

The initiative operates on a calendar-year basis, with the number of EBA partnerships at the end of each year determining how many titles we can flip. The more libraries join the program, the more impactful this initiative becomes. This is not a pilot program; there is no end date. Our commitment is ongoing, ensuring a long-term, scalable approach to supporting open access.

As an EBA customer, what do I need to do?

There are no changes to the way our EBAs work, the only difference is that your EBA spend will be directly contributing to making books open access.

Empowering knowledge for all

We’re excited to work with our library partners to build a world where knowledge is truly accessible to everyone. We want to work together to continue to empower learners, researchers, and educators everywhere by breaking down barriers to knowledge.
