New to Cambridge in 2026: Voluntas
Cambridge University Press is pleased to announce that it will publish Voluntas: International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations from January 2026, in partnership with the International Society for Third-Sector Research (ISTR).
Voluntas is an international and interdisciplinary journal focusing on nonprofit and voluntary action, including issues related to, but not limited to, nonprofit and non-governmental organisations, volunteering, philanthropy, and civil society. The journal welcomes submissions grounded in diverse theoretical frameworks and methodological approaches provided the research substantially advances knowledge in the field.
As part of the move to Cambridge, all articles accepted for publication from Volume 37 (2026) of Voluntas will be open access; published with a Creative Commons licence and freely available to read online for all. We have an open access option for every author: The costs of open access publication will be covered through agreements between the publisher and the author’s institution, payment of APCs for those with third-party funding, or else waived entirely, ensuring every author can publish and enjoy the benefits of OA.
Megan A. Haddock, Executive Director of ISTR, says: “With its strong academic reputation and alignment with ISTR’s mission, Cambridge University Press is a natural home for ISTR’s journal. CUP’s commitment to open access publishing for every author goes a long way in moving the needle towards fostering inclusive scholarship, motivating excellence and research in the field of third sector studies, connecting research to practice, and supporting research-informed teaching. We are excited about working with CUP and the opportunities this partnership provides for the field.”
Cambridge University Press HSS Publishing Director, Daniel Pearce, says: “We are delighted to welcome Voluntas to Cambridge for 2026. As a leading journal in third-sector research, it brings a new perspective to our portfolio in Political Science and Social Studies. Its transition to open access represents a significant step forward, and we look forward to implementing our unique OA model to support the journal’s continued excellence and offer the benefits of global accessibility to all Voluntas authors.”
Voluntas is essential reading for all those engaged in research on the Third Sector (voluntary and nonprofit organisations) including economists, lawyers, political scientists, psychologists, sociologists and social and public policy analysts. It presents leading-edge academic argument around civil society issues in a style that is accessible to practitioners and policymakers.
