Quasi-dual-continuous modules, which generalize the concept of dual-continuous modules, are studied Mohamed, Müller and Singh had obtained some decomposition theorems and their partial converses for dual-continuous modules. It is shown that these results can be extended to quasi-dual-continuous modules. Further, a short proof of a decomposition theorem for quasi-dual-continuous modules established recently by Oshiro is given. Some more structure theorems for such modules are established. Finally, quasi-dual-continuous covers are studied, and duals for results of Müller and Rizvi are derived.

For both differentiable and nondifferentiable functions defined in abstract spaces we characterize the generalized convex property, here called cone-invexity, in terms of Lagrange multipliers. Several classes of such functions are given. In addition an extended Kuhn-Tucker type optimality condition and a duality result are obtained for quasidifferentiable programming problems.

Four properties of congruences on a regular semigroup S are studied and compared. Let R, L and D denote Green's relations and let V = {(a, b) ∈ S × S|a and b are mutually inverse}. A congruence ρ on S is (1) rectangular provided ρ ∩ D = (ρ ∩ L) ° (ρ ∩ R), (2) V-commuting provided ρ ° V = V ° ρ, (3) (L, R)-commuting provided L ° ρ = ρ ° L, and R ° ρ = ρ ° R, and (4) idempotent-regular provided each idempotent ρ-class is a regular subsemigroup of S.

A rectangular congruence is (L, R)-commuting and a V-commuting congruence is idempotent-regular. If ρ is idempotent-regular and (L, R)-commuting then ρ is V-commuting. Examples and conditions are given to show what other implications among the four properties hold. In addition to characterizations of the properties, these are studied in the presence of other conditions on S. For example, if S is a stable regular semigroup, then each congruence under D is rectangular.

Stampfli and Embry characterized points in the numerical range which are extreme in terms of the linearity of corresponding sets of vectors. Das and Craven generalized this to include the case of unattained boundary points. We give an alternative proof of this result using a technique of Berberian. This approach appears to be more conceptual in that it enables us to deduce the result from that of Stampfli and Embry. We also illustrate how the same technique may be used to generalize other results of Embry.

A type of p–adic continued fraction first considered by A. Ruban is described, and is used to give a characterization of rational numbers.

Optimality conditions and duality results are obtained for a class of cone constrained continuous programming problems having terms with arbitrary norms in the objective and constraint functions. The proofs are based on a Fritz John theorem for constrained optimization in abstract spaces. Duality results for a fractional analogue of such continuous programming problems are indicated and a nondifferentiable mathematical programming duality result, not explicitly reported in the literature, is deduced as a special case.

In the early 70s A. Kaneko studied the problem of continuation of regular solutions of systems of linear partial differential equations with constant coefficients to compact convex sets. We show here that the conditions be obtained for real analytic solutions also hold in the quasi-analytic case. In particular we show that every quasi-analytic solution of the system p(D)u = 0 defined outside a compact convex subset K or Rn can be continued as a quasi-analytic solution to K if and only if the system is determined and the -module Ext1(Coker p′, ) has no elliptic component; here is the ring of polynomials in n variables, p is a matrix with elements from and p′ is the transposed matrix. In the scalar case, i.e. when p is a single polynomial, these conditions mean that p has no elliptic factor.

A posteriori error estimates for a class of elliptic unilateral boundary value problems are obtained for functions satisfying only part of the boundary conditions. Next, we give an alternative approach to the a posteriori error estimates for self-adjoint boundary value problems developed by Aubin and Burchard. Further, we are able to construct an alternative estimate with mild additional assumptions. An example of a linear differential operator of order 2k is given.

For enriched categories the correct notion of limit involves indexing by a module. This paper studies the question of cocompletion for a given set of indexing modules. As well as providing a simplified treatment of cocompleteness for ordinary categories, associated sheaves and associated stacks are also included as cocompletion processes for appropriate bases. In fact the saturation of a general set of indexing modules has properties which justify our use of the term “covering” for members of the saturation.

A conjecture of Fox about the coefficients of the Alexander polynomial of an alternating knot is proved for alternating algebraic (or arborescent) knots, which include two-bridge knots.

It is shown that that an ordinary linear differential equation may possess a holomorphic solution in a neighbourhood of an irregular singular point even though the usual linearly independent solutions corresponding to the two roots of the indicial equation both have zero radius of convergence.

The existence of 1-factorizations of the complete multigraph λKn which cannot be decomposed into 1-factorizations with smaller λ is studied.

Let σ be an ergodic endomorphism of the r–dimensional torus and Π a semigroup generated by two affine transformations lying above σ. We show that the flow defined by Π admits minimal sets of positive Hausdorff dimension and we give necessary and sufficient conditions for this flow to be minimal.

The existence problem for balanced Room squares is, in general, unsolved. Recently, B. A. Anderson gave a construction for a class of these designs with side 2n − 1, where n is odd and n ≥ 3. For n even, the existence has not yet been settled. In this paper, we use the affine geometry of dimension 2 k and order 2, and a hill-climbing algorithm, to construct a number of new balanced Room squares directly. Recursive techniques based on finite geometries then give new squares of side 22k − 1 for infinitely many values of k.

A regular semigroup S is said to be locally inverse if each local submonoid eSe, with e an idempotent, is an inverse semigroup. In this paper we apply known covering theorems for inverse semigroups and a covering theorem for locally inverse semigroups due to the author to obtain some covering theorems for locally inverse semigroups. The techniques developed here permit us to give an alternative proof for, and sligbt strengthening of, an important covering theorem for locally inverse semigroups due to F. Pastijn.

A Berry-Esseen type result is given for the conditional distribution of a weighted sum of i.i.d. integer-valued r.v.'s given that their unweighted sum equals its expectation. The examples include the case of sampling without replacement from a finite population.

One way of constructing a 2 – (11,5,4) design is to take together all the blocks of two 2 – (11,5,2) designs having no blocks in common. We show that 58 non-isomorphic 2 – (11,5,4) designs can be so made and that through extensions by complementation these can be packaged into just 12 non-isomorphic reducible 3 – (12,6,4) designs.
