Q&A with Wearable Technologies Associate Editor: Professor G. K. Ananthasuresh
Professor G. K. Ananthasuresh, of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, answers our questions about his work and Cambridge University Press’s new journal Wearable Technologies.
What first attracted you to the field of wearable technologies?
Back in 2012, I had an idea of what we had called “cognitive jewellery” for the elderly. We had developed a finger-ring that could discern the intent of hand-gestures. Working on that project led me to the field of wearable technologies.
What are you currently working on that you’d like to tell us about?
I am working on self-offloading diabetic footwear using snap-through arches.
What do you think the journal Wearable Technologies will bring to the field?
brings together a growing community of researchers working on wearable devices and those analyzing data gathered from such devices.
What are some of the challenges facing the field today?
Power sources for wearable devices and charging them with ease is one problem.
In which areas of the wearable technologies field do you expect to see growth in the next five to ten years?
Human health monitoring and augmentation of human capacity not just compensating a disability.
Why should authors publish in Wearable Technologies?
It is perhaps the first journal to focus on wearable technologies and hence it will reach the right audience.
