NJG – Special Issue on Geothermal Energy online and Open Access

In the last few months an interesting collection of papers related to Geothermal Energy has been published in NJG – Netherlands Journal of Geosciences. Contributions to this Special Issue came from many authors from industry, academia and government organizations that all play an important role in the Dutch geothermal industry. It provides a snapshot of the current status of geothermal energy in the Netherlands and an outlook towards the potential future of geothermal within the Dutch Energy Transition. A must-read for anyone with an interest in this subject!

Some papers detail the geothermal plays in the Netherlands, while other papers are on geothermal in European countries close to the Netherlands. The role of geothermal energy in the energy transition and optimization of geothermal developments using the play-based portfolio approach and dual hydrocarbon–geothermal exploitation are subject of some other papers. Several operational aspects and technical hazards and risks that are (possibly) associated with geothermal energy are reviewed as well. The papers show that the learning curve is steep, while the geothermal industry in the Netherlands is moving fast from the start-up phase to the scale-up phase.

All the papers in this Special Issue can be accessed here. It has been made Open Access, thanks to financial support by EBN. Our thanks also go to over 25 reviewers, the NJG Board, and Dr. Johan ten Veen (editor-in-chief of NJG) without whom this Special Issue would not have been made possible.
